Oakland International Airport has a new name and it is causing controversy. Port commissioners unanimously approved the rebrand to San Francisco bay International Airport earlier today. And the new name is big. Think a lot of pushback from the city of San Francisco and a legal battle is brewing. Harpers dan thorn joins us now live at the airport in oakland least it used to be called oakland airport. Were all confused. And can you straighten this out . Yeah, vicki, its the same airport. Just a new name. But the San FranciscoCity Attorney david chiu has already sued over and even sent a letter yesterday urging the court to reconsider and maybe have San Francisco and oakland Work Together to come up with an alternative name. But the port instead chose to move ahead with their plans and they say theyll also have a response to San Franciscos lawsuit. There are now 2 bay area airports with the name san fsancisco in their title, a unanimous vote by the oakland port board thursday approved the switch from oakland International Airport. To San Francisco bay, oakland International Airport, nobody owns the San Francisco bay and it is the most identify identifiable geographic indicator. And we happen to sit on on the San Francisco bay and we just want people to know where we are so they can come enjoy. Our beautiful city port board, president barbara lesslie, along with other commissioners says the name change will increase the airports visibility. Well, also giving potential travelers more options in the bay area. And a name kings change can certainly do that. That brings that knowledge for people past the mississippi to really understand where oakland sits in the greater bay area and also internationally, of understanding from people from around the world where oakland is in this greater bay area. But the city of San Francisco does not want this new name to happen. A lawsuit claims that iifringes on San FranciscoInternational Airports trademark in a statement to kron for the San FranciscoCity Attorneys office says it is disappointing that oakland chose to ignore our multiple offers to collaborate an alternative names and avoid litigation. We have no choice but to move forward with next steps in our trademark lawsuit, porter attorney Barry Richardson has requested for a declaratory judgment as a counterclaim to the lawsuit. She hopes the court will agree that San Francisco bay is a geographic term and not exclusive to the city nor county of San Francisco. We were not seeking money damages with that were only seeking a declaration from the court that we can continue to use the mark that the board to support. Well, there were some residents spoke before todays vote and they were concerned that if theres going to be more people showing up here that would create more air traffic in more air pollution here in the city of oakland. But there are also some Business Leaders and city leaders like councilmember noel gallo. Believe that this name change is going to be good for the area in oakland, dan thorn kron. 4 hey, dan, real quick. I dont know if you know the answer this, but any idea of when we might see some signs and official name change is taking place in oakland. Thats probably going to take some time. We did. We havent been given a definitive answer on that. But we know that the work is going to be starting. Probably soon because the name is affective immediately as of todays vote. If you go online, you try to search the airport. It may still say oakland International Airport, but a lot of information that youll see on there will say San Francisco bay oakland International Airport on it. So the signs and all thats going to cost a lot of money. Eventually it will get to that point. But of course, well see where this legal situation goes from here. All right, dan thorn live oakland International Airport. Thank you, dan, on francisco bay. New at 10 and Alaska Airlines flight hit a bird while landing at sfo this afternoon.
