Speech with campus safety. Lawmakers say its time to get control on campuses. From the bay station. Youre watching kron. And news. Thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. Im justine waldman. Were going to begin with the response in the u. S. To the war between israel, hamas universities across the country getting overrun by in campus with several growing to the point of civil unrest. Law enforcement officers forcibly clearing some of the encampments. In new york city. Police arrested about 300 protesters on the campus of Columbia University and also at city college of new york officers in riot gear moved in last night to clear out encampments. The nypd also breached colombias hamilton hall, which was taken over by protesters yesterday morning for weeks. These propalestine demonstrators have demanded that universities divest from israeli links companies. The nypd will maintain its presence on campus. There. It says until midmay, also an encampment of protesters at Tulane University in new orleans was cleared out. At least 14 people. Theyre arrested. Campus police, Louisiana State police and new Orleans Police forcibly removed demonstrators. Officers from 3 Law Enforcement agencies. Theyre moved in after ordering the group to dispersed. It was not immediately clear how many protesters were present, but 2 of them who were arrested were students. The University Said in a statement adding that the encampment was an unlawful demonstration. And here in california, classes at ucla are canceled today as violence and fireworks erupted there overnight. There were dueling protests between palestine and israeli supporters. Scuffles broke out between the counterprotesters, sun. Seen throwing objects each other. The clashes happened outside of a tent encampment that was set up on campus. A group of israeli supporters tried to take down the barricades that were surrounding the encampment. And police were there at the scene in riot gear did not immediately step in ucla leaders condemned the violence and requested help from the Las Angeles Police department and here in the bay area. The protests are growing. Students at Santa Clara University are now calling for a stop to the war in gaza. They also have other demands. Kron fours. Tiffany justice is live from the school with more. How big is this encampment gotten so far . Tiffany . I just seems so. Is set to start soon. But you can see some of the students have already gathered. I was told that they plan on maybe starting around 12, 15 so students can get a chance get down here to the long that we are located, that were also being told that faculty is also participating in this protest. And theyre also going to use this time for an educational purpose, holding a teaching at the same time. So we do know students here at Santa Clara University and College Campuses across the nation are holding protests in solidarity with the palestinian demonstrations. The protests. Today, a lot of organizers came together because and faculty and staff because he wanted to put on and educational teaching on campus. We want to also call for change on campus in terms of having university divest from any investments they have supporting the iowa currently. 2 years ago we had a resolution pass through associated Student Government which requested that we divest completely and we werent able to hold them accountable again. This is like around the time covid. A lot of communication is different. And so we want to make sure were Still Holding admin accountable to that and that we can continue raising awareness on our campus today. All right. So in a statement from the university, they say, quote, as an educational institution, Santa Clara University respects and supports the rights of all members of our Campus Community together to express their viewpoint and deeply health concerns. We also are committed to ensuring the safety of all on our campus state. The bba in classrooms residence halls, attending a protest or engaging in cocula killer activities. So as i mentioned, theyre still setting up right now. The plan on really getting those protests slash teaching going around 12, 15 so very shortly. And they plan on being here and holding other additional events throughout the evening and afternoon until 08 00pm. Tonight were going to gather more information speak with the university. Some more and bring you that information at 2, 3, this afternoon. Back to you. I think what court for entire this encampment in other counties around the country across the world, that not about the university not about it is some of the rhetrric that weve seen in some extreme cases like at ucla and Columbia University . Its clearly crossed the line where jewish students are being blocked from accessing common spaces. And so were looking to take proactive steps to prevent some of these more extreme things from happening here. So making sure all students feel safe and accepted on campus that is proving to be at odds with some of the demonstrations on monday. Tense popped up at the quad at San FranciscoState University and the tent and camp and at uc berkeleys sproul hall is now in its second week today, faculty and staff are planning to join in the protest. The protesters say they want the university to stop investing in companies that work with israel, especially if they are involved in making weapons of war. And at least once im there at the callen, campbell reads glory to the martyrs, victory to the resistance. It appears to be in response to the hamas terror attack on october 7th, which started this war, 1200 civilians in israel killed 250 more were taken hostage that day. And tyler gregory, the ceo of the bay areas Jewish CommunityRelations Council posted this message on social media about that sign saying these berkeley signs arent propalestine their prohamas in support of terrorism against jews and do nothing to help the cause of palestinian statehood. And on the peninsula. Students are demonstrating at stanford university. They said theyre concerned now about disciplinary action coming from the school. Students told us the school sent them letters about participating in the protests. It start off with 19 for out of like 2 or 3 more. Cant exactly remember. Who have gone . Gotten letters from the office of Community Standards and are basically being put through their internal disciplinary process. The language is very vague. The protesters say they want a better understanding of how exactly they might be punished. We did reach out to stanford to see what these ramifications might be, but so far have not heard back when we do, well let you know. And happening now, students from across Oakland Unified School district are staging a walkout in solidarity with the university protests for palestine, Oakland Tech High School be one of the schools participating. Some students from there and teachers are expected to speak about the events that are unfolding in gaza. And coming up at 12, 30 today, well check in with kron 4 Charles Clifford. Hell have a live report on that situation and well go back now to new york where the nypd Deputy Commissioner is telling a very proud moment overnight as officers restored order at new york city college, they took down a palestinian flag that had been raised on the campus flagpole that American Flag had been taken down and it is now back up again. And has campus protests are escalating. Congress is now threatening consequences. House republicans are launching an investigation into federal funding for the sun for universities and pushing to pass a new anti semitism law. Our washington, d. C. , correspondent Hannah Brandt tells us why some lawmakers say now is the time they need to get involved. House leaders accuse University Officials of failing to keep these protests under control. Also saying theyre not doing enough to protect jewish students. Fireworks erupted at ucla and protesters clashed on campus across the country of colombia. New york police stormed University Building to arrest dozens of protesters who have been occupying it. This thing is out of control from capitol hill. Lawmakers are watching with concern and House Speaker mike johnson warns of universities dont get the chaos under control. You will see Congress Respond unkind. Youre going to see funding begin to dry up. Youre going to every level of accountability that we can muster. He says several house committees will investigate the protest and may decide to take away federal funding. And this week, congress is gearing up to vote on a bill to change the federal definition of antisemitism under antidiscrimination law. The rampant antisemitism. Requires action by the federal government. Congressman mike lawlor introduced legislation and supporters say it would allow universities to crack down on harmful speech. This is not the free marketplace of ideas. This is open threats to jewish students because of their faith and who they are. But some worry it goes too far like congresswoman teresa ledger, fernandez, were constitutionally bound to protect. Free speech, even more importantly, when it is speech with rich. We do not agree. And congressman pete aguilar prefers letting universities respond. They have guidance. They have they need to enforce those before. Congress creates new ones. The white house as well. President biden does support peaceful protests. He is concerned about antisemitism on campuses and he doesnt agree with protesters barricading themselves inside of University Buildings in washington. Im Hannah Brandt. All right. Other news now as the Golden Gate Ferry Service between San Francisco and sausalito back in service. Well talk about our forecast now on this beautiful day. Were going to check in with kyla grogan to see whats happening and why is it really 70 in San Francisco right or very were also get breezy is like in syria. This wind advisory. For sacr mento, you can see areas to the north, but also for those of you who are along the delta there. So that does include the late have that does include fairfield and were looking for offshore wind up to about 40 Miles Per Hour. Gusts through about 05 00pm. You can already see where some of that is starting to happen in fairfield now about 15 Miles Per Hour. And were picking up also out of the coast here, Half Moon Bay doubt 2022 point kind of 2 dynamics going. And as we get to the afternoon, this is San Francisco. You can see that were going to see that wind get a bit gusty again. So these are the sustained winds are looking out for about 16 Miles Per Hour or so. Taking you to future wind gusts. Gets kind of interesting here because weve got an onshore push happening out of the coast, right . And then weve got an offshore push, a more northerly flow happening as we look inland, which translates to were all going to be a little breezy, not just today, but into tonight. And frankly into tomorrow as well. Its basically a wind gradient that set up. We have High Pressure off the coast of we have low pressure to the interior and whats happening is you get that win gradient. But also the High Pressure is building up and its allowing us to warm up, at least for now. There is another low pressure system and that will ultimately knock temperatures down. But today, tomorrow, friday, look out for days like this where you can see San Francisco right now at 66 degrees. Were just a 57 out Half Moon Bay. But look at how many 70s we already have today. San Jose Livermore concord and santa rosa. All in those low 70s oakland at about 68 degrees. So where are we going today . Were going to get pretty warm. And yes, it does look like we could get up to that 70 degree mark. Even in San Francisco, you can see the only place really staying cool today is out at the coast or theyll have that onshore flow but inland, were going to go above where we were yesterday. Were looking at temperatures in the upper 70s, even low so this is well above average, obviously. So i talked about the fact that were going to knock those temperatures down once we hit the weekend. And the reason for that is simply because that High Pressure breaks down and that allows a cold front to track in atd ahead of that front will come some showers. So theyll be late friday. Well start to see the clouds roll in friday evening, but late friday into saturday, 1st half of saturday, at least thats where to get some showers. You can see a little sierra snow slated to show up as well as we start a brand new month now. How much rain are we talking about between about a quarter of an inch and a half an inch . You can see some higher totals up in spots like your rico where can get, you know, quite a bit of rain there. But for most of california, this will be beneficial rain. And that is a good thing this time of year. Well take it as we head towards our summer season. Back to you. Thank you. Owners of cannabis businesses will tell you how hard the industry is hit by high taxes. Its part of the reason why the for 20 event in Golden Gate Park was canceled this year. Threedrug will change that when that gets eliminated, it frees up capital that makes investors more interested. And investing in cannabis companies. Thats the capital comes in, which helps the industry, which is otherwise struggling from other taxes. The proposal must still be reviewed by the White House Office of management and budget before cas join the same classification as tylenol.
