A new bill introduced in the state legislature is taking aim at excessive homework in california. Public schools. Our capitol correspondsnt Eytan Wallace brings us the story. Thanks so much, dave. Well, spring is in full swing and picnics may be on your mind as temperatures start to warm up as dave was just describing there. And joining us live now with some delicious picnic recipes is our favorite livermore chef Leslie Dabney also known as the vineyard. Good morning to you, leslie morning. Thank you for having me to that. Course, we love having you on the program, but tell us a little bit about what you brought. Well, youre right. The weather is fantastic. So lets get outside. Lets pick maggot, scrap friends and family. But you know something. Lets leave that big cooler thats filled with the ice. Then super happy. So i have some great recipes where you dont have to worry about that. So much and test. I love this. And so were going to start first with, of course, a lot of fresh right now. This time of year, we have so many fresh ingredients. I love to cook seasonally and a fun one for everybody, adults and kids. Our mike caprese salad cucumbers and theyre fun especially for doing a picnic, their finger food that theyre worried about the potential exists. Like an easy cleanup, right . Exactly. So im going to show you how i make in this poll. I already have the cup elements. Weve got our mozzarella tomatoes and some fresh basil. And to this, im just going to add a little bit of a bus, a mic and a little bit of extra Virgin Olive Oil just for some flavor. And what you do is id like to use for this recipe. I really like to use an english cucumber and this is an english cucumber. And the reason i like to use this one is because you can leave the skin on it. Its its edible. Its not as so i like to use that. And then they just took my spoon and i hollowed it out. So i have a nice little area that i can put. It shows yes. And so i can stuff it with this caprese and youve got all these great flavors in here. Yeah. And you know Something Like i said, the best part is you dont even need utensils. And while you may be setting up the picnic, people can go ahead and help themselves to one. Like i said, you can sit there into that. Thats great. And then, of course, always a little Parmesan Cheese out shes extra cheese. Say why so little extra parmesan here with that delicious, fresh and look at how easy that is to make. Is a wet. So yeah, thats great. But now we have also a salad and i was always good for picnics and i have mediterranean salad. Its chick pea based richards protein. So its kind of that im a start with a base spinach. You to like a rookie i do. I do. And spinach is well, ok, so you can use either one, actually, if you want to do romain whatever you like, the best part of this salad is theres a lot of ingredients, but you can pick and choose what you want to put in. Because guess what . Theres no recipe. Police. Theres no recipe jail you can make this your own. So i have the spinach in there and my chickpeas, if you want to help me, yeah, were going to put our red onion for some crunch and of great color. And then im also going to add some cherry tomatoes. And if you could ask you cumber because these are all wearing mediterranean based type of ingredients and would you like to source your ingredients for your . I love to go to the Farmers Market. I love to go to my Farmers Market that perfect and right now i go on thursdays sundays and they really have everything you need fresh and ready to go. I love to support our farmers california. And of course, our Farmers Markets are just so much fun to go. Hang around with you. So i have my column on all of to and simple. You can put everything together. And then, of course, you know, i like to make my own dressings. We talked about. Yeah, im your honor. I i love that. You do that because you know exactly what goes into them. No preservatives, you know, and thats really important. Yeah, right. We dont want to do that. And because this is a vinocur. If i have white wine vinegar and i also have extra Virgin Olive Oil and to make it kind of that mediterranean flair had reagan now and a little bit of parsley. Great. And im in a little bit of lemon juice. Keep it nice and bright and fresh and i put it in, you know, a container like this where you can just shake it. And again, this doesnt need to be refrigerated. Once you take it out to pack it. Yeah. You really dont need to like win. Its more of a, you milkbased or cream based or Something Like paste you want to keep that refrigerate. So this is great for picnics. So then im just going to put that on it. And i like to address address my solace right at the last minute. We now, but because theres so you know, really hearty ingredients and beer, theyll just really hold up nicely to that. All the look at how pretty that is and remember and we say you eat with your eyes first and we do. We have that and some and we think, wow, doesnt that look good . I definitely want to try that. Yes, so we have some really good fresh ingredients here. Lots of fun, but i think we need a Little Something sweet. Lets do it. I said, wheat is always fun. And these are my easy. And i mean, easy up. Lemon and blueberry and its easy rule say any time you dont need your mic circus or ruling youre its easy love the sound of i crest ahead of time. And this is just 4 ingredients. Its flour powdered sugar, some better and a sprinkling of salt. Thats it. And i just put it in there into my hand. And i think for about 18 minutes because we want to have a little crest on it for so it doesnt get soggy. Yeah, long at all. That was super easy. And it can just really in a mic and youre just a bowl. You mix and the mix. And yeah, and then we have the filling and this is just its a little bit of flour. A lot of juice in here from my fresh lemons. Now i have a lemon tree at i can pick my lemons whenever i but of course, you know, you can get them at the Farmers Market and then theres sugar in here because we want to make the sweet. Yeah. And right. And then we just port right over this beautiful and the x will help make this, you know, really light and it will pass out beautifully. And because were going to add some we just sprinkle it in the top like and guess what . This only cooks for about 20 minutes. And again, once you make it, you just let it cut them into bars and you have a great dessert to bring to pick the pick. Is great idea. And its fun and its delicious and look at how seasonal that absolutely ends are all fresh and this is the end product right here and right. We have that right there. How to listen to other. And if you want to nothing wrong with little extra right . A little bit of powdered sugar makes everything sweeter everything better. Yeah, so much better. And so i love this all combination. But, you know, you might be a little thirsty. Yeah, the day in the yeah. Nice weather. I have to have some wine to pair with this delicious picnic. That sounds great. And for me, i cant really think of doing like a summer picnic without a rose. Ah, ok, i love or rose with all of this. It really is. Chris fruit forward goes really well with but a second one, i want to add with this is chardonnay now a little caveat to the chardonnay. Im not going to use one thats in the french oak one. Thats in a neutral oak. Interesting. Thats a new wave right now of started nays. And there are a little bit lighter and thats kind of fun getting away from the keir, this one happens to be a really like but you can find anyone thats just has you know, that neutral flavor and this crispin ready for summer. So i think were ready for a summer picnic. Absolutely. And thank you so much for getting us ready for that horse. Always so much fun. I love to do this right. Will fantastic. Well, is an american and Pacific Islander heritage month is just around the corner a time when we celebrate and highlight the accomplishments of our vibrant api community. The Korean American Community foundation of San Francisco is marking the moment with a special gala. And joining us live now to share more is executive director drew pat. Good morning to you, drew. Good morning, stephanie. Thank you for having me. Of course. And by the way, go bairstow graduated from cal. Want get your thoughts. First you know, tell us a bit about the organization. Yeah. The Korean American Community foundation of San Francisco was founded 10 years and the idea was to build up that spirit of philanthropy in the Korean American Community and also make connections between the great organizations that are already doing the work and individuals who want to support the cause and help people on it. And so you and i were talking during the commercial break youre telling me that sometimes there theres a theres a large group of korean american to actually overlooked when we think about korean culture in the bay area. Yeah, theyre 2. 6 million koreans in america 90,000 of them are in the bay area alone. So theres theres a sizable population, but we have set large segments that are being left behind in really suffering in our Senior Community has grown 69 over the last 10 years. We have large portion that are the poverty and about a 20 to 30 are considered low income. So without the Language Skills without the access to they really suffered during difficult times like covid or the rise in asian hate the inflation that were seeing today. Well, and where these groups largely living in the bay theyre theyre spread out throughout the bay area. And and throughout Northern California, theres a senator and sacramento as so tell us a bit about how your organization is working connect these groups with the resources that they yeah. So as we reach out to individuals too, teach them and help them learn about flat flatter p and how they can apply to their lives. Were also reaching out to organizations are grantee over the last 10 years. Weve worked with 43 different organizations. They each have very special innovative programs that are. Im helping people directly so i can give a couple of examples for Korean Community center of the east bay. They operate a screen. The bay area korean information line. So thats a phone line that korean speaking. Agents who can answer basic questions to help people access the governments safety net programs that are already available. But just out of reach for these people because of language or because of economics or transportation or or so that program has helped thousands peoples over the over the years was especially important during covid and it continues today. So theyve actually increased their capacity to cover things like Domestic Violence, which is also a in our community. So programs like that for women shelter that actually provides resources and training 2 other to him help address that. Crisis of Domestic Violence on it. For folks who are watching this, theyre learning about these different organizations learn about your organization about this. A demographic of people who are really in need of support. How can the public really reach out and help . There. There are multiple we offer volunteer opportunities for people who want get involved. Theres also Educational Resources and we have special next week. We have our annual gala at the khan a gallon which is actually that means one in korean. So were trying to bring together people and organizations and businesses that all address these critical needs got and we are showing video of the gallup is from previous years. And quite a few people show to this. We expect 500 next weekend at the ritz there are still a few tickets left and people want to go to our but its a its a great opportunity to celebrate the work that weve done over the past 10 years. And this is our 10th anniversary but its for haha. But its also like im looking at the next 10 years, like what can we do in the next 10 years to to really shore this community and their make sure that we make that last mile connection between the people who need the help and the resources that are available to them absolute. What are some of your goals over the next several years now that you are the executive director of the organization . So number one is education and awareness and just teaching people what flat that he its not something that is that comes theres theres definitely a an understanding that people have to have in order to practice it on a regular and then also just raising more funds because theres theyre more organizations. Theyre more programs out there that are doing good work. We want to be able to support them and just make those connections. So bringing bringing these organizations together. So then again, if anyone watching this wants to help out, whats the is our web site with the website . Again, the website is kay acf casey f s f dot org. The morning. The fog in the morning. Well, on the as we kind of tie things off here. It we are heading into api heritage month. Is there a message that you like to share with our viewers yeah, you know, as we celebrate the successes in you know, the knowledge meant of the korean culture and the korean impact in. Business and i want to make sure that everyone can can benefit from all the success weve had as a as a as a group. So not leaving people not letting people suffer in silence anymore. Absolutely.
