Thats a group that monitors the water conditions in lake merritt. Thanks for joining us. Eli. I whats happening in the lake . Well, currently right the conditions are last week on thursday, the wake saw large streaks of and it did turn out to be the same red tide that we saw in previous years as well as a composition of other species were present in the water. But fortunately due to the cold weather and some of the rain, we had it subsided all on its own. So it came very quickly. My staff were there on wednesday they didnt see anything. It was widespread on thursday and over the weekend last weekend dissipated on it kind of went away. So what is for people that dont know at a red tide, this algae bloom and why would it be concerning to see it there . And lake merritt. Yeah, we use the term algae kind of kind of general term, this specific species is adeina flatulent. That is president. Its a small microscopic organism that is a considered a phytoplankton that floats address with the tides. It can move around on its own. There are tens of thousands of species, some of them can be harmful and some not there typically always present in some combination of but from time to time, different conditions, whether thats climate or weather or Water Quality can lead to them to grow rapidly, get out of control. And thats when we call that a bloom blooms. Typically classified by wanted here in abundance in the water. And the reason thats a problem is when they grow to that extent, they will eventually start to die off. And when that happens that we have rapid depletion of oxygen in the water and that often lead to fish kills so that some poses to. The wildlife there is that it can start to kill the fish. There are match in the birds. Probably dont fare that well with it either. The fish are probably the fish are the ones that are suffering. Definitely the are quite happy because theyre hit. This was a new phenomenon for the west coast, primarily especially in the bay area where we are has happened historically years back. So theres a lot of researchers trying to find out was this particular species toxic or toxin producing . But there was no evidence that ive seen any way yet definitively that talks and production was the cause of the mortality fish last year to 2 years. And what do you think is causing it . Were kind of coming out of our wet months now into our drier, warmer months. Is there something about how the weather is changing that might be causing this algae to continue to cause problems at lake merritt. It is likely that of the weather is playing some some role. We Water Quality monitoring. These kind of is the one you can see behind me that side. Its a we have those all over the state and were seeing already that water temperatures are significantly warmer than they were at this exact same time last year. So we had a pretty mild winter despite it was a nice wet winter. Were seeing warmer water temperatures and water are one of the key factors as well as nutrient availability and other things that will cause algae that grow. 2 of loom proportions. And again, everything that the lakers find, people can go there this weekend with their pets, their families and should be a problem. This blue. Yeah, this the city and im assuming will.
