House of representatives has just passed a bill that could ban tiktok in the u. S. If it doesnt cut ties with its chinese parent company, a group of bipartisan lawmakers were behind the bill. They say its a matter of national security. The bill requires a Chinese Company bytedance to sell their app within 6 months or face a ban here in the u. S. Now, opponents of the bill say that banning the app would violate the First Amendment right of more than 150 million americans who enjoy tiktok supporters of the bill say its not an outright ban and passing. It is critical to protecting americans and their data. The bill will now head over to the senate for a vote to its future. There unknown. But well keep tracking the story. Investigators are looking into a rash of copper theft. Then it happened at vta train tracks a dozen or actually 2 dozen now have been reported this year 2 people have been arrested sc far. Kron 4 Sarah Stinson tells us more. The 2 people arrested are accused of stealing 10,000 worth of copper from the tracks of eta. On monday, a train operator actually witnessed the theft. Thieves are targeting the Valley Transportation Authority in the south bay, stealing copper from the tracks. The Santa Clara CountySheriffs Office says it is investigating 2 dozen copper theft cases causing a total of half a Million Dollars in damage to Railway Property that some people risking their lives and they during the public for about 10, a pound, the latest copper theft happening in broad daylight monday, a train operator witness this happening near the tracks on the vta cropley light rail station in san jose. A person was seen with a white pickup truck less than an hour later, deputies were told the same truck was spotted at vta station in sunnyvale. You were able to detain the suspects. And which resulted in fighting actually got copper wire was stolen from that vta station. 60 yearold daniel mail. And 55 yearold frank pacheco. Bulls got arrested for suspicion of having stolen property, conspiracy and possession of meth. The ongoing copper thefts not only disrupt vta operations, but also put trains in danger when copper being absent. Were no longer able to track train movement. We spoke with someone who works at a metal scrapyard business to learn about how they ensure the copper they are buying is not stolen. He told us they dont take copper from just anyone. They take many precautions, including taking a picture of the person, their car and their id. And suffered lifethreatening injuries during a standoff with police while they were trying to serve a warrant at a motel in petaluma. Police say the incident started saturday when they responded to a home on harvest lane for a Domestic Violence call. They say officers werent able to take him into custody that night. Police say they tried to serve 2 warrants but said the man threatened them and shot his gun several times later that day they heard another shot come from the mans room and then a swat team went inside and saw the man was significantly injured. A tanker started leaking some sort of fluid. So they were concerned that was one of 3 tankers that were found abandoned last friday and 2 of them had already been towed away. Authorities tested samples from the leaking tanker and they ruled that the fluid was not hazardous. They want to introduce new evidence because it could potentially prove his innocence. That dna testing is among the things are asking for. Peterson, as you may remember, was convicted 20 years ago of murdering his pregnant wife and unborn son. Jennifer mcgraw takes a look at what happened in the hearing. Good morning, mister peterson. The now 51 yearold had been having an affair with his mistress with his wife, laci peterson, who was 8 months pregnant with their unborn son, disappeared back in 2002, the family lived in modesto at the time. Attorneys with Innocence Project, an organization that aims to exonerate the wrongly convicted agree to re examine the case. They asked the San Mateo County superior court judge to approve new dna testing. We spent a lot of time trying to. Sets out what frankly are very alarming deficiencies in the discovery that was provided to the defense of the time trial. They also asked us tennis last District Attorneys Office to provide them with evidence that they say should have been turned over during petersons trial years ago. That then investigators argue that peterson dumped laceys body during a fishing trip in the San Francisco bay, a burn ban with a bloodied mattress in the back could contain dna evidence. Petersons family has maintained his innocence for years and believes the bad may have been used in a burglary. Theres a theory that she may have been killed in the van because she witnessed that burglary. Theyre asking the judge to allow them to reopen the investigation. Show them the documents from burntout van. That was located less than a mile from the peterson home that contained mattress that they say had blood stains in it. They want that mattress retested. The defense was entitled to those at the time of trial. Mister peterson has been waiting 20 years to find some of Police Reports and audio recordings and video recordings that should have been provided. 33 is the time the San Francisco department of Public Health has released an update regarding Overdose Deaths in the city. 64 people died of drug overdoses last month, which is down slightly from the 67 deaths reported in january. Fentanyl, though, continues to be the leading cause of Overdose Deaths. Although doctor hilary could a ms from Francisco Department of Public Health is hoping to change that. The bahrain ching, people who use stimulants and helping them to stabilize their lives. We expect that we will see some positive health outcomes, even though addiction is a chronic illness. Recovery is possible. There is a way out of addiction and into a healthier life. The department of health says its focusing most of its resources towards communities with higher rates of overdoses, communities like the unhoused and those who have had a prior overdose. State senator scott wiener is pushing a bill to limit the use of inaccurate drug test by Law Enforcement. Yeah, if passed, he says this could prevent people from being wrongfully convicted. Senator scott wiener says the passing of this bill will make Law Enforcement across california used more accurate drug testing. Adding that right now every year color, metra, drug testing causes about 4100 people statewide to be wrongfully arrested and charged. No, its senate bill 9, 1, 2, in the state Senate PublicSafety Committee just passed with a vote from 4 to one requiring Law Enforcement to use more accurate and objective drug testing, essentially stopping agencies from making arrests or filing charges on the basis of these color based drug test, which are also known as colorimetric drug testing right now, some areas still use these tests to assess whether a substance contains illegal drugs. But Officials Say many agencies across the state have already abandoned these tests due to them being inaccurate. The bill does not ban the use of these tests completely, but it does prevent officers and prosecutors from using them as the basis of arresting or charging decisions, at least without verifying the results with a more accurate tests. Now, the senator says a recent study done by the university of pennsylvania showed that nationwide colorimetric drug testing leads to about 30,000 wrongful convictions every single year.
