Senator scott wiener says the passing of this bill will make Law Enforcement across california used more accurate drug testing, adding that right now every year colorimetric drug testing causes about 4100 people statewide to be wrongfully arrested and charged. Now if senate bill 9, 1, 2, in the state Senate Public Safety Committee just passed with a vote from 4 to one requiring Law Enforcement to use more accurate and objective drug testing, essentially stopping agencies from making arrests or filing charges on the basis of these color based drug tests, which are also known as colorimetric drug testing. And right now some areas still use these tests to assess whether a substance contains illegal drugs. But Officials Say many agencies across the state have already abandoned these tests due to them being inaccurate. The bill does not ban the use of these tests completely, but it does prevent officers and prosecutors from using them as the basis of arresting or charging decisions, at least without verifying the results with a more accurate tests. Now, the senator says a recent study done by the university of pennsylvania showed that nationwide colorimetric drug testing leads to about 30,000 wrongful convictions every single year.
