Welcome back. Lets talk about our forecast now taking a live look outside at this gorgeous view. See some clouds out there and some beautiful blue skies up above. Lets check in now with kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan from or what we need to know with our weather. A kyler hey there. So the big difference is right behind me. The clouds that have come in today. You can see that. And as we get into today are going to cool it down. Were going to increase our cloud cover as we go throughout the day today. Tonight, we do have a late night shower chance in the overnight hours are super moon is tonight. Unfortunately, i think its going a little tough to see it with the cloud cover. But looking ahead, we do have some scattered showers and theyre going to clear out on sunday. So weather patterns changing temperatures certainly changing. And right now were sitting at 62 in downtown San Francisco, a little bit warmer in spots like nevado santa rosa. Napa up in the north bay. You can see inner east bay antioch already getting up. 77 degrees. San jose 75. But having said that, were going to be a little cooler today than we were yesterday. And thats why the highs today, if you are around the bay itself, looking out for more 60s today, then 70s and looking upper 70s inland instead of 80s. So that is the difference. And as we look at our temperature trends with this system rolling through, were going continue to cool down as we get into tomorrow. Once those showers pass us by, we will start to warm up again as we get into sunday. And then, of course, monday into tuesday, getting back to seasonal temperatures and then a little bit above it. But lets talk about this rain. Its not going to be a lot of rain. You can see model showing the highest number here at half. Moon bay at about 2 tenths of an inch. So i think its going to attempt or less for most of other totals a little bit farther to the south of us might a little bit higher for the central coast, but as we go through our day today is going to be all about the cloud cover. This is your friday afternoon into your evening. So i think no problems with our commute as we get home. Its the overnight hours thats about 04 30am, in the morning on saturday that we start to see some of those showers pop up and we kind of continue that throughout saturday. So again, not a deluge of rain, but we will get the clearing as we get into saturday night and sunday. So i think sunday will be the better day for outdoor plans. Now, speaking about doors, we also have this. This this is for Winter Weather. Winter weather advisory going up in and around Mammoth Lakes starting saturday morning through sunday evening. I did mention that we have the super moon tonight. So just want to point that out that that is the harvest moon. It is our 4th successive supermoon of the night. Quick look at your extended forecast. Shows you the cool down through the weekend. The warmup into next week. Back to you. All right. Cuyler, thank you for that. Back to that breaking news. Still gripping the heart of our nation. Senate during 1992 socalled year of the woman making california the first state in the nation to have 2 female u. S. Senators taking on the gun lobby would be a whole marker for 3 decades careers. I am quite familiar with firearms. I became mayor is a product of assassination. Im aware of sound. My assassinated colleague and put a fingers through a in a 1994. Her assault weapons ban was passed. Senator, i know something about what firearms condition after the ban sunset in 2004 feinstein repeatedly tried to get another assault weapons ban passed. But as congress became more polarized, she failed to win support. It exempts 2000, 271 weapons. Its enough for the people in the united states. The moderate democrat feinstein championed an offshore Oil Drilling Ban after the bp oil spill in 2010. Were here to announce this band that would permanently ban all new offshore oil drilling in federal waters all along. The west coast, she was also behind the california desert protection act, which among other things designated death valley and joshua tree as national parks, though, few by some as a late convert to support same marriage. She spoke in favor of repealing the defense of marriage act in 2011. We now have a bill that strikes doma that says if a state takes action to legalize same marriage, then that is a valid marriage. And the federal governments that the federal benefits that would a crew to any other couple would accrue to a same couple chair of the Senate Intelligence committee. She called for an investigation into the cia torture tactics in relation to 9. 11 detainees. Later in 2016 is the ranking democrat on the committee. Feinstein called for an investigation into how Russian Hackers impacted the election that brought donald trump to power. I think its necessary that we come to grips with this. I think its necessary. That there be a real investigation in 2017, feinstein became the top democrat on the senate Judiciary Committee when it held hearings, son Neil Gorsuchs nomination to the Supreme Court once a hotly contested issue. Is no longer a hotly contested issue. We move forward. Feinstein foretold the future when she said she would support gorsuch and warned he would vote to overturn the constitutional right to abortion. He wrote that he believes there are no exceptions to the principal that, quote, the intentional taking of a human life by private persons is always wrong. End quote, this language has been interpreted by both prolife and prochoice organizations to mean he would overturn roe. In 2018 at the age of 85 feinstein faced greatest challenge for office. She squared off against fellow Democrat Los Angeles state senator kevin de leon, who said it was time for a change. Many agreed with feinstein getting reelected with just 54 of the vote in our final term in office ended up being quite a challenge following the divisive twentytwenty confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett feinsteins competency was called into question for this comment. This has been one of the best set of hearings that ive participated in in february of 2022. Feinsteins husband to 40 years. Richard bluhm. Died of cancer in just 2 months later for unnamed senators called feinsteins fitness into question in the San Francisco chronicle article saying her memory was rapidly deteriorating. The 88 yearold feinstein, who is by this point, the old a sitting u. S. Senator responded with a list of recent achievements. And in a statement, she said the real question is whether im still an effective representative for 40 million californians and the record shows i am. California needs a warrior in washington in january of 2023. To California DemocraticCongressmembers Katie Porter and adam schiff. Both announced they would run for Feinsteins Senate seat, pressed about her future. Feinstein remained unsure. I think people should they want run. For me, i just need a little bit time. But a little over 2 weeks later in february, feinstein issued a statement saying she would not run for reelection but with serve out her term which ends in 2024. Dan kerman kron. 4 news. Again, that was a story by our dan kerman on senator Dianne Feinstein. A true trailblazer in american politics in the first elected woman, mayor of the city of San Francisco. She died today at the age of 90. And joining us live now with reaction is retired congresswoman jackie spear. Thank you so much for joining us today. Good to be with you, stephanie, although its a conversation for sure. Absolutely. Well, youve had quite a political careers yourself 3 decades as a state legislator and member of congress, youre born and raised francisco as well. How much did todays news affect you . You know, we all know it was coming because she was becoming more frail. You know, today is the day too. Remember extraordinary woman who created a pathway for women in public life. That followed her. She was a mentor to me. We number of experiences, one really around gun violence 8 to 10 days after i shot guyana. There was the gruesome assassination of mayor moscow, d which elevated feinstein as mayor. And then both lost husbands at early age when we were in we sort of connected on those levels 100 get together from time to time and she was also a great start, legislation. So number of bills that carry together and she never. Flinched. I mean, she never decided to somehow water down the bill. She would always stay the course and her legacy of bills is remarkable from the ban on assault weapons to protection of lake tahoe to the creation of the national deserts protection act that put 7 million acres in california into out protection. And the amber alert program, the cancer stamp legislation really significant pieces of legislation. Absolutely. And, you know, with her passing there does i mean, the question does come up with what governor gavin newsom might potentially do next, right . He now has this opportunity to appoint someone to fill feinsteins seat. And we know that there are some candidates with their hat in the ring. Do you have any ideas on who he might choose or who you might like to see in the position . Well, i think its time to grieve her passing and to celebrate her legacy that will come soon enough. And confident that the governor will make a decision that benefit the state. What we need is someone who well be able to hit the ground running. Im sure hell find someone to do that. All right. And of course, the other big headline here is we are on the brink of a potential government shutdown. How do you see todays news affecting negotiations . There . Well, its one less, that the democrats have in the senate. So it makes everything that they more critical at me probably means that there wont be any more judicial appointments that will pass out of the senate. Judiciary committee. You know, the fact that senator feinstein kind of defied her doc with borders and came to the senate to vote and was able to vote on a number of judicial goes to show you that she was going to do it her way and she was able to help out in that regard as well. So i think what were going to see as an effort to help someone appointed quickly so that they can continue to do the business in the senate. All right, retired congressman jackie spear, thank you so much for your time. This afternoon. We appreciate it. Thank you. Beand continues. Our coverage remembering the life and legacy of senator dianne f and kron 4 continues. Our coverage remembering the life and legacy of senator Dianne Feinstein joining us live now with reaction is san jose congresswoman zoe lofgren. Thank you so much for being here with us today. Happy to be here. We woke up with the sad news that our friend and colleague Diane Feinstein had passed away and so, you know, i chair the California Democratic delegation in the house of this. As many as we could win over to the senate this morning to join the other legislators in mourning her and listening to both to Chuck Schumer as well as leader speak about her not only as a legislator icon really in the country, but as a friend in we had a moment of silence in the floor of the house with the whole california delegation later today. Were thinking about all the moments that we had with diana and work that we did with their really an amazing person. You know, herd herd president s will certainly be lost here in such a tremendous way. A congresswoman, you are a bay area native born in san mateo. You went to stanford and Santa Clara UniversitysDianne Feinstein was a San Francisco supervisor. When you were getting your start in politics, if were getting right here. So what do you remember about her back then . Well, you know, i was on the board of supervisors in santa county will when she was mayor San Francisco. And you know, we had sometimes the city is spared. Cisco Santa Clara County were dogs over things sometimes usually spikes over money, but she was a very focused, very capable leader of the city and all the for get was before i was on the board. When george muskogee and were murdered. Been visiting with george muskogee just the week before the murder and tremendous dignity that she showed in announcing that travesty leading the city through such a trying time. Really the dignity that she showed at that moment was really who she was with compassion and style and dignity and the smarts and focus really. And mike maze person. And how much do you see Dianne Feinstein has a personal inspiration not just for you, but many other many, many other in the world of Public Policy. Well, she was a ground, but she was the first so many ways. She was the first woman on the Senate Judiciary the first woman senator from california. She was the first woman mayor of San Francisco. She was the first woman in the senate to chair the intelligence committee. So she was a groundbreaker. And you know, some of senators this morning, were talking about how she opened the door for them. I remember so well when she was running for senator and a reelection Barbara Boxer was running. And barbara, you know, had a challenging because it was diane did not hesitate. She just stepped forward and made sure that it was her. And barbara together was unjust. Each person for themselves. So and she has always looked out for people and especially encourage other women to fulfill their potential. And i feel grateful to her for that. Such a powerful thing and could you also speak to the legislative impacts that she left behind . Well, you know, she gets so much you cant just single out one or 2 things. What ive thinking this morning just about a couple of things, one that everyone knows the work that she did and the efforts and how much she cared about farm workers in california in the effort she made to try and get legal status workers and really was very important thing her. We all knows. Obviously the shooting of mayor moscow knee and harvey i think that was a factor in her long effort to and finally successful effort to get assault weapons ban. And of course, we know from the statistics that that ban resulted well never know how many thousands of americans were not murdered because of that a band, but it did result in a decline of these mass murders. Of course, by the time it expired, the republicans were in control. They would not allow it to be extended. But for period of time, it was a lifesaver for americans. That, of course, were it not for diane . Im not sure that the violence against womens act would have been enacted and the thousands tens of thousands of american women. Have suffered at the hands of that abuse have been helped because of her vision and her tenacity in getting that that bill into law. Congresswoman, we do want to ask you about another big headline today, which is the potential government shutdown. How do you see todays news potentially affecting negotiations here . Well, you would think that some of senators who are, you know, using all the procedural tricks to slow things down, might say, well out of common decency. Lets stop that. But that would not be those individuals. So they are continuing with their frivolous objections. That means the senate probably will not be able to do their bipartisan spending bill until sunday the republicans support temporary spending bill that they defeated. So theyre in complete you know, its not possible to solve this without bipartisan effort. And so far, you know, that democrats are prepared to vote for bipartisan bills, such as what the senate is doing really along the lines. We had an agreement that we approved by over 300 earlier this year. And the only people who walked away from where their house republicans. So we needed have them get back to work. Theyve been now says no votes for today. I i just dont understand how they can be as reckless is they are being because real people will be heard here. I mean. Some of them like representative goode and many others and no one will notice if the government is shut down. No one cares what the government does is terrible. Anyhow. I wonder when the marines are not paid, whether they will have that same to you. Are you hopeful that a deal can be reached here . Well, i mean, the senate has reached a deal and of course, biden. The house democrats, the house republicans, the Senate Democrats in the senate, republicans reached a deal. I mean, that was put in writing and was voted by big majorities in both the house and senate. So we have the deal just to stop reneging on the deal. Governor gavin newsom, of course, now. Has this. Opportunity, if you will, to appoint someone to fill this we know that there are some candidates who have their hat in the ring. You have any ideas on what do next. You know, today is a day to think about die. And, you were not. Thinking about who might be appointed. Im im i know the governor is personally devastated. He was close to her not only as elected official but personally and today were just thinking about die and there will be plenty of Time Starting tomorrow about. Whats next. All right, representative lofgren, thank you so much for your time and your insight today. Or Michael Thomas spoke with bay area residents on todays news about feinsteins passing. He brings us their reaction in this report. As trailblazing senator Dianne Feinsteins death was announced this morning. Bay area women tell me only one word comes to mind and that inspiration and her legacy. One woman said she remembers being a young girl and senator feinstein becoming acting mayor other states year 1992. When she became part of the senate that they remember feeling the most empowered like anything was possible. Devastating. She is role model, too. Bunch of young ladies. Amazing. But she had a great life pass away at 90. So spoke with one woman who says while she didnt always agree with senator feinsteins policies, she respected her work in the door. She opened for women everywhere. We actually were not on the same page. But of course, im very sad that and even younger women say shes played a major role of inspiration for them now, especially when a woman been in. Politics and in government as long as she has. And you know, and then everything that she sent. So that many here in this area say its her legacy, her story and her impact that will remain forever. In san jose, Michael Thomas kron. 4 news. Lets check in on our weather conditions taking a live look outside at the embarcadero. Looking like theres a slight breeze out there in San Francisco along the coastline and some lovely blue skies and fluffy clouds up lets check in now with kyla for more on what we can expect with the weather out there. Hey, theres this clouds are going. Bring us a little shower chances. Theyre all going to a shower. Chance to are taking a live look there right now. Incline village. Pretty nice day out there about 60 degrees. Weve got a mix of sun and clouds, wind, not bad, but the wind there, the wind here is going to pick up and that has everything to do with the system thats going to be coming our way, bringing us a little bit of rain, but also bringing to the sierra some showers, but also the chance of some snow showers out there, too. And that is what i want to focus on for second here. So rain wise looks like between a quarter of an inch and a half an inch of rain. So thats already kind of a significant thing. But then we kind of throw this into the mix, which is south of lake tahoe. We now have a Winter Weather advisory that is up and that goes into effect saturday morning through sunday evening. And theyre looking at for 3 to 6 inches of snow. Now thats not going happen in tahoe. Its going to be much less. You can see perhaps bear valley getting an inch. You can see South Lake Tahoe just showing a 10th of an inch of snow and some of those higher totals down and around mammoth but it is kind of our first season hit for any kind of snow showing meanwhile, bringing it back to the day. We do have those cloudy skies that are rolling and no doubt about it. We are going to be looking out for a few showers. And when i come back in just a little bit, were going to talk about that and a track that for you as you head into your weekend. So you can make your plans. But lets just say its going to be a little bit of a soggy run for us on saturday. Before we clear out on sunday. Thats your spoiler alert. Ill give you details on that when it come back. Back to all right. Thank you. Kyla. Coming up on kron, 4 news at noon, we hear from mayor london breed who remembers the life and legacy. Senator feinstein left behind on the city of San Francisco. We continue our breaking News Coverage today. Senator Dianne Feinstein has passed away at the age of 90. She was the first female mayor of the city of San Francisco. And today we heard from current mayor london breed who offered her remarks on the late senators passing. Watch. You cant think about San Francisco without thinking about Dianne Feinstein and how she has consistently then a champion for people for neighborhoods, for bridge building for all the things that have made our city such an incredible city over the years. And i want to just also take us back to when i was a kid. And when i was excited about playing Dianne Feinstein, the mayor of San Francisco, the first woman mayor of San Francisco. I was and the Ben Franklin Middle School band, i played french horn. And we work so hard to get ready to play for her right here city hall. We were known as Dianne Feinsteins ban. Any time there was any event activity or what have you. We basically were chosen. As the ban to perform for any occasion. And i remember begging my grandmother, begging her to get me some new pantyhose. I remember bagging my grandmother for something new to look nice for the mayor. She in fact. Bought the ban sweaters that we wore that day. The ban sweaters that we wore so proudly. And there was a level of pride to be in front of the mayor to watch the mayor witness us play and to be she was so proud of us and she said so. And she took the time to talk to us express how amazing we were. And to remind us that we were her band. Jack martins was our conductor. He was our teacher. He was our friend. He loved her. So. And in fact, when the fortyniners won the super bowl and she loved the San Francisco fortyniners, they had a big celebration at the fairmont hotel. And you know that the Ben Franklin Middle School band was right there to play for her. She stopped by to say hi to us. She made sure she brought over joe montana. And let me tell you, that was one of the best moments of my life. I still remember it today. Growing up in San Francisco. She was always someone we looked up to so much so that when she ran for senator, we helped in her campaign. I remember doing the envelope ce and doing whatever it took. She was the first woman to really step out and to do this extraordinary work both as president of the board of supervisors mayor of San Francisco as the senator for the state of california. And just last night she was on the senate floor casting votes because she truly believe and doing her duty being an extraordinary Public Servant and it is clear, does she care about making a difference in the lives of so many . And state senator scott wiener also representing San Francisco. He shared his thoughts to todays news of feinsteins passing. He spoke about how feinstein shaped his political careers. Dianne feinstein had are public persona was and very formal and they go a little bit proper. And she was a formal person, a lot of ways. But when you were with her personally, she was one of the most down to real authentic people. She was who she was. What i started running for supervisor in 2009, i was just the sky and the community that was not well known at all. She adores early on. I because mayor newsom recommended me to she was that democrats were in control in washington. She was unbelievably powerful national figure. She wanted to meet with i went in with a target for you would be a 5 minute meeting and ended up being over an hour. She declined a phone call from Chuck Schumer, for sure is otherwise occupied. Had it in my campaign flier and telling you what you need to change. And thats to be so much information about her time on the board of supervisors. And then we took the photo. She asked us put our arm around me. And i yes. And she told me i was a little, too. Stephanie did to loosen up so that that was the time signed that. I knew. Some powerful memories there.
