We want to continue our coverage now of this breaking news story. Go to washington, d. C. , where we found out Dianne Feinstein had passed at her home there within the beltway. We have our capital correspondent, trevor shirley, standing by now from washington. With more on this breaking news this morning, trevor, which im is beginning to generate some reaction there within the halls of congress and beyond. Hey there. Good morning to both of you. Youre right. We are starting to see some of the reaction to senator feinsteins death. Starting to come in, we saw a moment of silence on the house floor just a few minutes ago and also a few moments ago, Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer also gave some remarks where he was very emotional, talking about not only his friend senator Dianne Feinstein, but also the legacy that is she is leaving behind. We all know that shes had these very publicized to Health Issues over the past year or so. So her death was not entirely unexpected, although given the fact that she did just vote on the floor yesterday and did come as a bit of a surprise to a lot of people here in washington. Once word of that broke just a little while ago earlier this morning, trevor, can you can you hear us, ok . Can just tell us a little bit her vote yesterday on the senate floor . What what what she looked like was a reaction. Yeah, it was a pretty standard wasnt more than we do more out of the ordinary than you would expect. She came in. She cast her vote. She walked off the floor. Very unassuming. We have seen her in a wheelchair a lot recently, especially around the capitol grounds. But as far as i can tell from the footage yesterday, she walked on her own. She did have an aide with her, walked in castor vote. I i cant remember specifically what the issue was that she was voting on. She cast an she turned around and she walked back off the senate floor and that that was her final vote. So to see that from yesterday is she didnt appear to in were shape or a worse off than weve seen her recently in effect that she did walk in and i would say makes todays news even more surprising. Wow. I mean, i have to say having yeah, experience with my own mother at the age of, you know, 87, when you see someone go through Health Problems like she has trevor and youve seen her up here or, for example, take 2 months off, right . It is. It is incredible that she had the strength yesterday to walk onto the senate floor and that she died this morning. Im im telling. Its just its its the remarkable thing. You know, i dont know how many times you had seen her in your travels there in dc if you can expound on know if you an opportunity ever talk to her and any personal experience. Unfortunately, i really didnt. You know ear from time to time. Its been quite some time that i saw her on the on the grounds of the capitol. As you mentioned, she did. Shed r taken that leave of absence no, i dont recall any oneonone interactions that i ever had with okay. Thank you so much ever a live report this morning on his trevor said there were comments made this morning Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer going to try to turn that around. Get some of that. We know that House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy is going to be holding his press conference in a little bit. We dont know if hes going make any comment. We expect he will. So well keep an eye out for that. But we are this morning joined by congressman Jared Huffman who represents californias second the north coast from the Golden Gate Bridge all the way up to the oregon border and im sure, congressman, i assume you cross past with senator Dianne Feinstein in the past. Your reaction this morning. I want to celebrate the life of Dianne Feinstein, this incredible enduring and i hope that well talk at least as much about as these past couple years, which frankly, you know, were just very, very difficult and a bit of a cautionary tale. I hope that the takeaway from this incredible woman, this incredible leader is that she just gets so many Amazing Things for the state of california and the nation in her remarkable careers. Oh, absolutely. I mean, lets lets talk about what catapulted her into office. Which is the assassination francisco, the mayor and n a supervisor harvey milk in giant George Moscone e. And just the uphill battle that she faced from the moment that she took office. Yeah, certainly breaking barriers as part of that story with Dianne Feinstein. But i think the reason that she stepped into the breach and that dramatic moment that that launched her careered is that she always had an incredible poise about her. She just had amazing leadership skills. You know, one of the things that have tried to learn from her working with her over the years is that there are parts of this that arent really in the Job Description so many times. I saw her just call a bunch of parties in her office and hammer out agreements using that platform of of her office and her authority. And thats something that a lot of elected officials dont even think to do. You know, its its funny. You say that because we just talked with our capitol correspondent eytan wallace, whos down in Orange County right now where republicans are gathering for an event there. And he reflected on his time reporting in the Central Valley where your colleagues on the other side of the aisle there, the Republican Congress members remembered fondly about her reaching across the aisle to work with them on various issues that were important to them and their constituents in the Central Valley. And that sort of echoes what you were just talking about, her ability to bring in people from both sides of any sort of political divide, any topic and find common ground. Its its a pretty remarkable thing to have in your legacy. Yeah, it certainly included reaching across the aisle and those situations. But it was a lot more than that. She had the ability to bring people really complex, intractable problems into her office in to essentially force them to work things out and find solutions and she would go pretty in the weeds when she was in her she was very much on top of details. That would surprise you. Yeah, i mean, how do you how do you do that . How do you negotiate vs . You know it the especially now in this day and age of im going to strike or im going to, you know, here they are. They cant reach an agreement. By the way, were going to have a government shutdown. So lets just stay at you know how whats the difference in what you saw and how she operated . The difference was that she had the stature and the authority and the credibility to keep everyone in that room and to sort of will them forward. Yeah. Lets talk about hes your man in politics. Id like your opinion on seeing, you know, her and politics as the first female and a leader in that and a trailblazer. How you saw times change from when she first took office to now as far as women in politics goes. Well, i think it goes back to that incredible year of the woman, 1992. We saw both Dianne Feinstein and barbara become our to california senators. And the rest is history. That was just a remarkable inflection point. And, you know, we have continued to struggle with various certainly no one should say its mission accomplished. But what she and senator boxer accomplish that here and continue to accomplish changed politics and changed america . Well, i think i remember it sick and i forget are the senator from idaho was confronting her about gun control. As if she, you know, i think it had that woman attitude. He you know, what do you know . You dont know and she thats when she made the ultimate comment about i know a thing or 2. I put my fingers a little, you know. Know one of her greatest moments that was just an indelible Dianne Feinstein moment. Just just lastly, do you still see . Women being treated differently in the halls of and do you see or not the how . How do you feel about it now . Goodness, but you know, im im grateful that. I am part of an institution and especially the Democratic Caucus where that is simply not tolerated. Do we see in parts of our politics . Continued of a badly all the time. The patriarchy is alive and but weve come a long way and, you know, will. We draw inspiration and purpose from Dianne Feinstein and others help break these barriers. She broke glass ceilings for women in local state and National Politics has died at the age of 90 and weve been getting reaction coming in from congress and also from here in california. Fact, want to share with you a post that governor gavin newsom just recently sent out. Reads, quote, Dianne Feinstein. Was many things, a powerful trailblazing u. S. Senator and early voice for gun control, a leader in times of tragedy and chaos. But to me, she was a dear friend, a lifelong mentor and a role model. Not only for me but to my wife and daughters for what a wonderful effectively. What a wonderful, effective leader looks like. We will continue to get reaction on the passing of senator feinstein in just a few minutes. Well be right 7. 30 and senator Dianne Feinstein, the longestserving california senator, has died at the age of 90 getting that word this morning that she passed away at her home in dc she was the first female mayor of San Francisco elected to the senate. In 1992, her. History with the city. Her legacy in washington is farreaching news nations. Joe khaleel has more on our life and legacy. I well, thank you. A lifetime defined by a series of historic first. Dianne feinstein was a driving force in american politics for more than 5 decades. Senator, i know something about what firearms can but before she was a political powerhouse, she was diane goldman. One of 3 children. And in 1969, she launched a long shot bid for San Franciscos board of supervisors and one big can you say how many votes expect to get . I would expect to have a majority, if not all. Fast forward to 11 27 1978. A dark day that would reshape feinsteins life. Forever. Disgruntled fellow board member dan white marched into city hall shot and killed both San Francisco mayor George Moscone e and board member harvey milk. Feinstein heard the shots discovered milk, spotty and tried to save him. Both mayor most goni and supervisor harvey milk. Have been feinstein now the highestranking surviving official in San Francisco took over as mayor. Again, the first woman in that role. Eventually she earned praise for improvements to City Services and furthering rights. I think the community is a viable Political Force in francisco after 10 years as mayor feinstein want to race for u. S. , senate a seat she would occupy for the next 3 decades. Plus, windows were broken. Now shattering more glass ceilings, becoming the first woman to chair the intelligence committee. The Judiciary Committee voted on that then leading the powerful Judiciary Committee where she spearheaded major legislation like the 1995 assault weapons ban. Sparking fierce debate and memorable exchanges like this one. Gentle lady from california. Needs to become a little more familiar with firearms and their deadly characteristics. And i say that because it is. A personal privilege for a moment, please. Yes, certainly i am quite familiar with firearms. I became mayor is a product of assassination. Im aware sound my assassinated colleague and put a fingers through a later she lied. Democrats opposed to president trumps Supreme Court nominee brett kavanaugh, but her storied careers didnt have the storybook ending. One might hope for Failing Health during her final senate years prompted calls from her own party to resign and sparked debate about how old is too old to serve. I89 about shingles kept her in california and away from washington. Only returning to the senate after a 2 month recovery. But the full picture of Diane Feinsteins life and careers is one of a trailblazer, a fighter, a Political Force unto herself. Lets continue getting and now reaction from our political analysts reporters who want to go to a ton wallace first, here is a u. S. Live from the down in Orange County where were curious a tonn if anybodys been reacting this morning or if youve heard anything from the halls in sacramento as well. Well, let me tell you, first and foremost, james and darren, everybody in the bay area. And i know you read this earlier on screen. We are now hearing from governor gavin newsom. Of course, the state constitution. He is the person who would appoint a successor to senator feinstein. But in the meantime, hes not talking about that today. Instead, hes just meantime calling her a trailblazing icon. He she worked matters like gun control. You just heard in that story there. Gun control. Also, though, Dianne Feinsteins life. I personally spoke with congressmember do dell dale, republican of hand hua said fights. I worked across the aisle to get water to the Central Valley on on matters like the when act to get water to farmers in the Central Valley, of course, very significant as california grapples, at least at that point with a major severe drought. Now, as for this convention here, as we await former president Donald J Trump and the leading gop president ial candidate to speak here in just about to 5 hours from now or so. I should tell you that i did already with a few folks here, a few republican delegates who are going to be hearing from the former president a little later tell me that, yes, they did not agree with on everything, but kind of just like i just said about congressman valadao said about by side during her lifetime. Well, also, some here say theyre very saddened to hear about her passing and that they did feel that she did do a lot, at least a lot of efforts to reach across the aisle, even though they did not agree with her on everything. So from from here, at least at the republican convention. Yes, even though hes a republican where you would think they dont, they dont agree with fines on everything im hearing here, though. Still a lot of sadness, a so regardless of political party, she this. Accordi g to many republicans spoken to here ready to devoted her life to the service, to the people of california, of course, dating back before her Election Night 1992 to the senate. Yes, he was, course, very involved. A pioneer in San Francisco. Ah, politics. First woman, mayor of the city beginning in 1978 and from there going as you can imagine to the halls of the senate. So a lot of reaction there now, as for newsom again, yes, he called her a trailblazing pioneer. Were hearing a lot of that this morning, but also important to note he is the one by the state constitution to feinstein and replace to find her and you need to do that. He has long said long promised he would and appoint a black woman to that job in recent weeks. Remember, did keep with that commitment. However, hes now saying that is going to appoint what he calls a caretaker and a limited role for that job because, of course, the election twentytwenty for us coming up in which we have congress members, adam schiff, barbara lee of oakland and katie porter of irvine, all running for that seat. He said he would pick none of those up for limited caretaker role because, well, because he says he does not want to give an advantage to any of th se. Of course, congresswoman barbara was not happy when she heard that she released her own statement saying she was disappointed when newsom said that very recently. So that is kind of where we stand right now. As for what happens next, james and darya. But for now, newsom, senator even again, republicans here at the california Gop Convention in anaheim, everybody expressing sadness over the loss of Dianne Feinstein. She passed away overnight in our washington, d. C. , home at 90 yearsold reporting live from tom wallace. Kron 4 news james and darya. Back to you in San Francisco. Tom, we appreciate it. Thank you so much. Thanks a ton. Now we want to move on to our political analyst michael yaki. To talk more about this. And michael, i i just want to ask you first for your personal reflections on the times that youve encountered senator feinstein, because thats something that not everybody can talk about. So just. Give us a little bit about how you felt and how will how she operated as as a person behind the scenes. I i was really fortunate. And at in my career to him become someone who recall a friend. She was a role model inspiration i during the time she was in. In office and the in the mayors office. And and in San Francisco i worked on some of some of the campaigns are around her allies are working for nancy pelosi she was out of office at that time. But shes getting ready to run for that vacancy. U. S. Senate that was bacon loss wilson and worked on that campaign and really gotten over and and but especially when she became a senator, it was something where our officers communicated a lot. We saw with a lot of political fundraisers, etcetera, and you know from it for you should when i became a supervisor, should always say 10 people changes to 2 people in washington when we go out there and behalf of the city go this mike lee r could remember hes a member. The board of supervisors. I was a member of the board of supervisors to 2 very important job. And whether thats true or not, she make you feel warm and very welcome and it was it was great to talk with her. But, you know, and theres a lot of trust there remember that theres one time when were working on the restoration of city hall after the loma prieta earthquake and our going to talk to diane, who was also in the Appropriations Committee and i got a call from a friend of mine and also who said theyre going to go to her and theyre going to lowball city hall and theyre going to go around your boss and trying die. So i really got on the we called diana. We got her in her car. We told it was going to happen. And she said nobody, low are turning the and so, you know, she later few a few months later on june 20 Million Dollars came to restore city alverson the couple million that was a reason. Operate. But under forget they come and the best woman. You also have to like she would have had to compensate. I would think, you know, just really of like an iron fist. At times, otherwise you could be seen if youre friendly has been weak yet. She talk to the other side how did that work behind the scenes . Well, i mean, anyone who knew, diane, you that there was no sort of youre going to get one over on she was someone who who is very gary. I mean, steely is a good word to apply. And doesnt mean she stealing percent right. But are negotiating style was very much look, this is what we want to try and this is where you are. We can go here. Or i can train run you over. So you know what you want to do. So youre going end on that. When you think about how she got the gun control i mean, something that we cant even think about now, when we cant, we cant even get, you know, barely background checks she got. Hundreds of automatic style weapons off the grid for 10 years. And if you look at that time period, every credible study shows the number of mass gun violence deaths dropped precipitously. They didnt have access to an ar 15 with the 50 magazine round to go creek, carnage and stalk people them and and and terrorize kill people. I didnt have it. And you saw some of the clips in the debate where their same old gentleman, you have any experience well, she know very well. She thats something that people forget. She was actually recall as mayor because she wanted to ban and guns in San Francisco in the week. Us going milk, assassinations and she they thought, well, you know, shes i mean, and was mainly young, white male, righth gun owners went after and they said were going to take this woman down and she just crushed them and and really strengthened and she got reelected. She is someone who who its trying to enter her political position even more but also steeled her resolve to know i can take groups because the nra did help fund a campaign that was behind the scenes. But we know what they did. So when she took on the nra on a on the guns that on the assault weapons. That was i mean, i i just remember the excitement. All of us feel that we saw that vote happened because the memories of want to win california families want to california. It were with has was fresh in everyones mind and she managed to accomplish what people thought was being possum and she did it a lot to we forget were up here in the bay area. Theres a great swath of Southern California Mojave Desert and hes protected for because of dying find and people people thought she was nuts. Its like when you want to preserve desert, its just its just desert. She goes no its part. Ecosystem. You have you have word. Is that order to help all of the hits . Its its its a beautiful area. Its its my, you know, like this in the movie and desolation. And she people thought she was crazy for doing that. But she kind of got it done with with republicans who she measured convinced that, you know, there is some word to preserving open space for the sake of beauty conservation. And the environment is a great memories. And are you going to be able to join us in the next hour . Michael, i know youve got a busy morning. Im available as always. You need me. Okay. She was available for all that is my well said that, you know, thats the least i can do well, so all right, anderson, i want to pick your brain about the next hour. So well see. Then well talk to you more think humans are day. This is our day to reflect on on Dianne Feinstein and what right now and get back to the breaking news to get another perspective on the passing of senator Dianne Feinstein. She was a trailblazer for women. And i think that i would love to hear more about that from a political analyst. And weve got one on the line here. Yeah, from cal state east bay where analysts nolan higdon joining us this morning. Thank you so much for sharing your time with us. On this day. Were all reflecting on the life and legacy of senator feinstein but also honor impact and you know what we can draw from what she did. Good morning. Good morning. Thank you so much for having solutely. So can you talk about how she changed the game in politics for women . What she face, what she went through and how things are different because of her. You know, i i was reflecting a lot of morning on her time is the female mayor of San Francisco and the way that she rose to that position and mysteries of often credit her credit her with, you know, stabilizing the city during that time. There are just been the murder of mice, kony and harvey milk the way she handled with so much death and great leadership really woodward define her, i think through the rest of careers. But she she worked on the issue of gun control. First, like you said, because because that violence spring boarded her to the National Scene as well. And so i just wonder what it took for her to get the passage of that assault weapons ban. First of all, and and then to see it expire after 10 years. Can you talk a little bit about that trajectory of the movement to ban assault weapons in her role in it . Yeah, she was a very a very leader and a great a deal maker within congress doing that you know, for younger audience out there. It was clearly a different country in terms of how the parties Work Together they the way they dealt guns lets you know, not forget even reagan. It was that the standard bearer of the Republican Party also had pass, a partial ban on assault weapons. You know, she really was able to work with with the other side develop a coalition to to succeed the legislation. You know, shes just been congress such a long time. Shes seen these historical changes you know, the parties were able to Work Together for Something Like that. And then when they were so divided, they were unable and see expiration of the van. You said you just referred to some of them made me think of old school might have been different than current like the oldschool politician is the way that they would try to negotiate. And were looking now at not a negotiation because were facing a government shutdown. So things are done differently. It seems like now. You know that the country is is very different. You know, the assumption was you know, people from one party or the other would would break with their party from time to time on this legislation or that over the last, you know, 10, 20 years thats become anathema that rarely happens. The find scientists from generation where the parties did try to reach out the other side and build coalitions and, you know, succeed ultimately with legislation. Its been fascinating as were watching, you know, some of the footage of her over the years. Through modern hd cameras, media has certainly changed over the years. You talk about how early on, you know, lawmakers willing to reach across the aisle because a lot of these deals were brokered, you know, behind closed doors when they could speak openly and honestly with each other. But in todays landscape with social media and everybody sort of, you know, claiming a brand and pushing that philosophy out. Its really hard, i guess in Todays Congress to, you know, strike a deal with each other without being labeled as a a traitor to your party is just its a different. Its a different time than when feinstein was really pioneering a lot of these issues. You know what . I would concur that the country you know, changing a great you know, someone like feinstein, you know, could side with her party are against her from optime to time. But you know, you know, voters often dont support. You know, straight away from the party once tantamount to leaving the party completely. So, you know, in that sense, i think theres a lot in important institutional memory thats lost when you lose someone like feinstein. Certainly theres been a lot discourse is about the potential negative aspects of age, but theres positive aspects as well. Things like wisdom and institutional memory that will be lost the senate was it. Someone like Dianne Feinstein is a great loss and we thank you for your perspective this morning.
