He was hit by a vehicle this morning in san jose. It happened at about 3. 30, this morning. And there is still an active scene there. Kron fours will tran, in fact live for us with the latest on what happened. Will. Police officers are still on the scene. This is the second pedestrian accident as far as fatality in san jose in the past. 24 hours, you can see it right behind me. I have confirmed the vehicle. It is fact, a garbage truck. You can see right there. This happened in the overnight hours. Not sure how well lit this area is. But we do know that the body is still on the scene as officers continue trying to look at Surveillance Video trying to talk to witnesses and looking at you can clearly see the garbage truck to see if theres any mechanical problems that might have led to this fatal accident. The driver did stay on the scene and is cooperating with Police Officers. This is not on the roadway. You can see the cars clearly going by right in front of your screen. Let me show you a map. So you know my location, this is jackson. Thats the street where all the going from the left to the right of your screen. And then the major intersection is alum rock avenue. It looks like its going to be here for quite some time as parents are dropping off kids at a nearby school. Not to mention this scene is still so active that a lot of people are looking over seeing whats going on and that is causing traffic to go by this area quite slowly. As to why this accident took place. Thats still under investigation, whether it was a simple accident where that person did not see. Garbage truck or the garbage truck had some mechanical problems. And happening today, more than 200 businesses in oakland are going to close due to be on strike because of Public Safety. Ultimately really just want to get the attention from the city of oakland and its Officials Saying that this would ultimately be what it felt like if businesses keep getting pushed out by the citys high crime rate and the lack of help that theyre feeling from local government. Others will be closed from 10 until noon emergence in the city. Tell us here that the breakins robberies in general crime have just gotten significant over past few years. The oakland police, citywide crime rate report shows that yeartodate robberies have been increased by 33 with strong armed robberies up by 35 . We spoke one of the officials from the Chinatown Association business at take a listen. What they had to say. Small we have generating so many jobs employ so many folks. And we pay so much texas. So we do stuff to be protected. Calling fall a Public Safety measures protect teen employees. All people on the says and for the customers. He goes on to say that earlier this month they were hoping to get money from the state that would ultimately help them fight organized retail crime. But the city of oakland miss that deadline to apply in response to todays strike for better Public Safety. Oakland mayor sheng thao said in a statement that her office is working on the problem. Workers at marin water are set to picket outside the marin municipal Water District because of contract negotiations. Chemists, electricians, rangers, maintenance workers and emergency workers are expected to pick it over their negotiations, they say, are threatening the recruitment and maintaining of the quality of staff. The crews serve nearly 200,000 customers and perform about 150,000. A yearly tests for them or an area that pickett as 11, 30 this morning in corte madera. His teen daughter hudson is a videographer and he was filming outside of his car with a tripod. But the Alameda CountySheriffs Office said they received a 911 call with the caller mistakenly identifying that tripod and phone as a firearm. So they had to investigate. People get killed like this. A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car in san jose at 3. 30 this morning. It happened in the 40 block of South Jackson avenue near the 6. 80, interchange. It was a man he died at the scene and the driver is collaborating with the police. This is the 3rd pedestrian deaths in san jose in 4 days. San Francisco Police want your help to find a hit run driver. Take a look at the vehicle that struck someone. This happened september 8th around 10 night. So it is pretty dark grainy shot here. Police responded to richardson avenue in lyon street and there was a man and woman. They were riding a motorcycle when they were hit and they were injured in this crash taken the hospital. Their injuries are life threatening. Police are asking anyone who might recognize this vehicle to contact them. Wow. And east bay mother now trying to come to terms with the death of her daughter alone. A gallon was shot and killed at the toyota dealership in albany last week. Police say was a targeted killing that the victim and the suspected shooter had a child together. The shooting happened last thursday morning while down was working at that dealership. You can see the bullet holes here in the windows. Authorities are calling this a case of Domestic Violence with the family says it is a senseless shooting. But 8. 18, is the time in a judge has made a clarification about a current injunction involving the sweeps of homeless encampments in San Francisco. Judge with the 9th Circuit Court of appeals said the city can sweep encampments, but only if the an house person refuses shelter. Yeah. This is part of an ongoing lawsuit between the city and the coalition of homelessness. Kron fours. Sara stinson takes a closer look. The San Francisco city Attorney Says officials can sweep encampments only if an an house person refuses offered housing, but the coalition doubts the city is offering real housing opportunities to those on the streets. San francisco is in the middle of an ongoing legal battle over homelessness enforcement. The coalition on homelessness sued the city last year accusing it of cleaning encampments without offering people a place to live. A federal court issued an injunction that has restricted the city from relocating. Some People Living on the streets. The City Attorney david chiu says a judge is clarification on monday eases some of the obstacles. 9th circuit recently clarified. That if the city were to make a specific offers available shelter to unhoused individuals. They would not count as involuntarily Homeless Individuals and dos the city can enforce our laws against those individuals. Chew says this injunction has made it difficult for the city to clean up sidewalks and streets for the last 9 months. But one of the lead attorneys for the coalition all shroff says the city has been sweeping encampments this entire time and the injunction has always allowed them to do so. So they can clear intent 3 times a day, 5 days a week for the 9 months that the injunction ha week for the 9 months that the injunction hbeen enter. And its important to note that even injunction the city is allowed to clear an address, homeless encampments that are posing their health and safety violation worsens, violating from alexis ability laws. Trough says Council Still has doubt that the city is offering housing at all to people on the streets dc after 3 years of data is that time and again on a daily basis, there is not nearly enough shelter for the people that i have. That chance is going cease to forcibly displace chu says they do have available housing, but some people refuse the offer. We know or have heard that individuals have shelter somewhere within our system, but they choose to maintain a tent on the streets. In other instances when they turned us down. There are different reasons. But we also hear that their attorneys have advised to turn it down during this litigation. So thats frustrating. Trough denied advising anyone of declining shelter. He says people refusing housing is a narrative the city has been pushing from the start. The lawsuit is ongoing and this injunction will remain in place. Im Sarah Stinson reporting in the newsroom. Happening today, the San Francisco board of supervisors is set to vote to agree on a final plan for reparations for black residents, the citys African AmericanReparations Advisory Committee recommended helping black families own homes boosting household incomes, creating black universities and creating a single payment, a 5 Million Dollars to every eligible adult. Now many have shown support. But critics say that these reparation plans are unconstitutional and would ruin the city financially. Unfortunately, a man has died after being struck by a vehicle this morning in san jose have around 03 30am in the morning. And its still an active scene. So lets get a kron fours will tran. Hes live in san jose with the details. Well. The Coroners Office is now on scene and they are removing the body. You can see it right there across the street. Those officers hovering around that area. That is where the man was hit. As you mention at around 3 oclock in the morning that persons name too early to be released to the public. This is not a city street as far as where it happened. You can see the cars going by. This is actually a parking lot. And it involves a garbage truck. You can see it right there. The driver pulled over, stopped immediately and is cooperating with officers. They are taking measurements of whats going on. Not sure if theres any skid marks a knee problems. Mechanically with the truck. So thats all on the table. As far as where this scene is. Let me quickly pull up a map for you. This is a very busy area, but this person was not clearly jaywalking. This was on jackson and alum rock avenue, san jose dealing with a rash of pedestrian accidents. As far as fatalities, this being the second one in just the span of 24 hours. But in this particular case, if can head out live now, this one involves a parking lot. Not sure if it was well lit at the time. They have plenty of cameras in this area which they will look at and obviously talk to witnesses. If there are any witnesses to be talked to, just to find out exactly what happened. It looks like this scene once the bodies removed, they probably will be wrapping up pretty soon. But there are plenty of officers and were talking 5 and a half hours into this investigation and they are still here. Obviously, theyre still looking to see exactly what happened. Could also i went over there. I talked to the Police Officer could be also speeding. Yes, its a garbage truck. But a garbage truck could be speeding through the area. The city is lowering the speed limit from 25 to just 20 Miles Per Hour in these areas that they call business activity, districts, the changes are going affect more than 26 miles of city streets, including portions of fruitvale avenue foothill boulevard, broadway and grand avenue. Using the speed limit itself is not alone in a change driver behavior, but it is a very important first that we need to rebuild the public trust that we are taking Traffic Safety seriously yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. In to bicyclists. When you see them on our streets. They are our brothers, our sisters, our neighbors, and we must share the road. Yeah, reduced speed limits call the safe oakland streets project. Its a longterm effort that it includes improving everything from safety around schools to establishing more bike lanes, deterring sideshows and also fixing bridges and stairs. City leaders say they hope to finish the speed limit changes over the next couple of years. Its 8. 34 and developing story that were following. We now know the name of the man accused of killing his mother and stabbing to other people in her berkeley neighborhood over the weekend. Jonah roper is in jail on suspicion of murder, elder abuse and other crimes. It is the most unspeakable thing. To a parent. Councilmember sophie hahn says that the mother who was killed was a wellknown artist and jewelry maker and the neighborhood and neighbors say son stabbed her and then went on and stabbed her partner and another neighbor and those 2 other victims are expected to be okay. Councilmember hom says that roper should have never been near the victims in the first place. There have been restraining orders previously for stepfather. And im not sure the mother also have restraining orders, but this is a violent individual, a troubled individual that the record show. After the stabbings, roper took off and Police Arrested him about 3 miles away in a stolen car that had been crashed. A daycare worker in San Francisco is sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for child jace wong pleaded guilty to producing and distributing child involving toddlers. And investigators discovered that some of those videos he made were taken at the Day Care Center where he was employed. Wong was taken into custody in april of 2021. He had previously worked at other day care facilities, including one in livermore. Alameda county officials now are working to prevent Domestic Violence tragedies. The District Attorneys Office is spearheading an initiative to support victims of Domestic Violence and enhance Domestic Violence. Prosecution. Last week, 19 officers across the county began training to become what theyre calling Domestic Violence. Law enforcement experts this training will give them the knowledge to not only testify on those cases in court, but ultimately prosecute them more effectively. Its a 36 in the east bay Contra Costa County health wants to hear from the community about a Hazardous Material released that happened at the martinez refinery in november of last year. Right around thanksgiving. They held a Public Meeting last night to explain what it was that was. Included in this recently completed toxicology report. Proffers amanda hari walks us through it. Contra costa health says the release did not increase Public Health risk. They say that is based on an analysis by independent toxicologist concern. Martinez, Community Members listened and asked questions as Health Officials detailed what was released into their Community Thanksgiving evening. It was on the trash cans and the Catherine Mars dune saw the dust around her home. She says, well, she didnt know exactly what it was at the time she had an idea. Is sort of assume its the refinery around their health. Officials releases in recent history. Another concern is the Martinez Refining Company didnt contact the county point blank. The Health Department is not happy that we were not notified of this county. Health Officials Say the primary health risk happened in the initial hours and days after the incident where people may have inhaled the dust particles. The data presented monday was regarding the metals found in the soil which were assessed months later. It showed the metals detected within the expected range typically found in the state and bay area and not a cause for concern. Martinez mayor brands orn called in to express her concerns about just how long it took is a very big deal for that. I mean, most pass occurred, the county says it shouldnt affect the day to talk to college that were working with this, told us that the levels would not change over time. But the chp says 2 people were driving recklessly and that led to one of them crashing into a boat trailer caksing it to flip over. This was on 5. 80, right near seminary avenue. Nobody hurt. Thats the one good bit that came out of this. Officers say everybody involved stayed at the scene. Traffic was temporarily disrupted, as you can imagine until they got that boat safely off the freeway. Its 8. 39 and Law Enforcement anti drug groups from all across california are calling on Governor Newsom to veto a bill that would decriminalize some psychedelic drugs and it would also order for their study on the potential therapeutic uses. The bill authored by San Francisco state senator scott wiener currently sits on the governors desk and it would take away the criminal penalties for possession and use of these drugs, including mushrooms because theres a psychedelic drugs that are used in therapy or recreationally. And theyre saying that that this those against this sets a des a dangerous precedent and they think it would open the door to more substances being decriminalized. If its legal its very acceptable. Its just like marijuana. And the kids will say, as mister silva said, well, they legalize it if it wasnt safe. If sb 58 is signed into law.
