Bay bridge. People also been smelling the smoke. You can see this video here. This is sort of a good look at what weve been seeing out here throughout the its also drawn a lot of spectators, people that stopping jumping out of their cars on the a overpasses here seeing whats burning again. This is that the snitzel steel area and this is that port of oakland firefighters have several crews that have been out on scene here, of course, with all this smoke up in the air, theres some warnings tonight e from the bay area, air quality district and letting people know to expect smoke, especially as the wind has been sort of blowing in this western direction. But its also going to start moving more south. So people alameda island, southern oakland, san leandro, hayward, fremont those areas, theyre probably going to be selling smelling the smoke at at some point tonight if they havent already been. So, of course, its a advise that you close your we talked with a couple of people who actually came out here earlier that were i guess, essentially escaping the smoke at alameda, just trying to figure out what it is. And they noticed that as they got closer to the fire that actually didnt seem as bad. So they were able get a good look at what was happening here, excavators and different large machinery out here moving around some of the burning materials included. And that, again, is some some scrap here. Sort of the reaction of what some people thought as they came out here to see what was burning. Just with his 2 fick, i mean, just think. Fiery smoke. I mean, that smoke is thick. You could cut it with machete. You know, is thick smoke and is all consuming. But that funding away because you are safer it is. It seems is that like a big month, they know donald fired and we can this cub a dose those are their move but it is well, you know. And considering whats happening right now maui. This is probably a pretty uncomfortable site for people to be seeing here in the bay area. Again, with all of this smoke, thats kind of moving up through the area. A little from the scene here. But thankfully its been came to this area, as weve all learned from firefighters before theyre expecting to be out on the scene here for probably several hours. It looks like theyve been doing a pretty good job of the knocked down. But i mean, it will be hard to believe considering how much smoke is still sort moving through the air here. But the crews are still working and then were going to keep you updated as learn more about whats going on here and then hopefully eventually when its out. Justin kan. It would seem as it gets darker and, you know, much more difficult to see the smoke. So i imagine if you can if you smell it, thats a sign its too close and that you need to stay inside and close all the windows. Yeah, definitely a good idea. I know i mentioned earlier. Its definitely gotten some some looking lose out here. We have an overpass. Its behind our our shot right here. A lot of people just kind of jumping out of their cars. Taking a look at whats going on here. Some people you can see are kind of Walking Around face masks. I havent really dealt with anything too much here, but i can understand people taking the precautions. And again, if youre smelling smoke and youre seeing smoke just close the doors, close your windows, get inside, dont breathe any of this stuff in. And of course, we know that the air quality district is also going to be expecting in and taking a look at this situation. So hopefully there isnt anything too, too bad thats in the the air. Thats thats burning behind me here. Definitely take precautions. Have any particular smell . It doesnt feel like it stinging when youre breathing it in. Im not from our Vantage Point right now, mostly the smell is just sort of like a like a burning almost like plastic. Sort of industrial kind of smell. But its not really too bad right here. Like in this immediate area were not surrounded by smoke. Its literally several yards behind us there. I mean, yeah, maybe a couple of football fields behind us there. Thats private property, which is why were not there to begin with. And its just blowing in that direction. So if youre in alameda right now, if youre anywhere south of alameda it, youre probably getting a nose full of it. So im sure theyd a better description on exactly what its like experiencing it down that way. But, you know, i thankfully were not were not experiencing that right now. Well, as we go through the night and hopefully will be you know, attempting to contact the Company Officials to see what they have to say about this. If they have a new well have but later on tonight kron 4 news, dan thorn live for us in oakland. Thank you, and were also following those Deadly Wildfires that are burning across the Hawaiian Islands right now. At least 6 people are dead. Dozens of people are injured and their numbers coming in right now. But over 270 buildings have been destroyed. These windy conditions are coming in from hurricane dora. And thats just making matters worse. Tonight, wildfires are burning on a couple of islands on in the state tonight from maui to the big island thats forced a lot of people to evacuate. In fact, some residents even had to jump into the ocean to escape the flames. So heres a look at one of the towns experiencing those wildfires. This is drone video from the northeastern part of maui. And as you can see, the wildfires are spreading quickly across the landscape. There. And heres a look at la hina, which has been hardest hit sin the central part of maui. Just err on the right corner of your screen. That is the Citys Library that is on fire. You can also see all that dense smoke blowing around the area completely covering the sky in la hina wildfires burning all over from maui to the big island. Thats forced a lot of evacuations. As we mentioned. So well take a look at one of the towns now. I think were going go live now to kron 4. Sarah were going to go live now to kron 4, Sarah Stinson because there are about. 4,000 tourists in maui when this fire began. All of them now are trying to evacuate. Yeah, thats right, guys. Im live here at sfo and of flight. Just landed from honolulu are told that some of the people trying to get home from maui were diverted to honolulu and then from there they can fly home and some of which coming, of course, home here to the bay area. Now, none of the people we talked to who just landed and got their bags here or on maui. But some of them said they were supposed to be there and theyre glad that they warrant. Now the couple louis airport is main travel hub. It remains open as a foe reported 6 flights delayed and tons canceled as well. These are flights, of course, coming from hawaii coming from maui and flights heading to maui are mostly delayed or canceled. You know, actually, we were up in the international airport, portion of the airport earlier of Hawaiian Airlines was completely close. We asked why and they said we are not getting any flights that are leaving to go to maui and the government there. They are saying do not come to maui. We need all of our resources for this emergency. Now we just spoke with people who landed at sfo. Again. No one coming from maui, but some people say they were supposed to go there. They change their plans. And then we talked to a man who said he lived in la hina the area that has been completely devastated by these wildfires. And he has some friends who are being affected. You have any friends still over there that are affected. Yes. You know, we have a very close friend and the people the lives of being taken and their families have been affected by this, that we were planning to go to maui. But last minute we switch honolulu instead. Now, right now were in a domestic. This is where a flight just touched down. But an International Flight with hawaii with the Hawaiian Airlines and another airline as well as going to touch down at 8. 40. So were going to leave here, go up to international and talk to some of those people. That flight will be coming straight from maui. So we expect are going to hear from some of the people who are directly affected by these fires, make sure to join us again at 9 oclock for my live report. Im sara stinson reporting live at sfo. Back to you. Yeah, its a kind of frightening to ponder what the and might have gone through a trying to get out of maui right now seeing the situation on the ground the higher. Sarah, thank you for that report from for chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. Now as we take a live look at sfo and the fog out there. You know, whats that hurricane doing right now . Yeah, thats thats really the big problem is we had such an intense area of low pressure. In the form of dora hurricane spinning out the middle of pacific south of the Hawaiian Islands over 800 miles away. But its because its so intense. And then theres a strong ridge of High Pressure. The north creating what we call a pressure gradient. Thats the difference between high and low pressure and its very steep. So you can imagine a mountain of their High Pressure and the valley aaron low pressure. All of a sudden all the wind starts to rotate around that low to the south and then to the north, youve got moving in a clockwise rotation, really kind of funneling those strong winds right across the Hawaiian Islands. And thats the set up for what happened. So you get an active fire with winds gusting as high as 80 miles an hour today. Unfortunately, that coming at night making it even more dangerous. And heres the latest wind gust you see just in the past hour or so, some of those gusts. So over 20 miles an hour in maui. And that is a big concern with an active fire there. Now, there is some promise that this area of low pressure is going to track away from the Hawaiian Islands. It looks like the very latest going to maintain strength of it as it begins to move away from the islands. That pressure grading that we talked about should begin to loosen up. That means the winds should start to decrease overnight tonight and tomorrow. Guys, back to you. Thank you so much, lawrence. Yeah, this war they got it in january. Were just hearing about it now. Part of the reason it is considered interesting. It is the first known example of federal prosecutors directly searching Donald Trumps communications and the january 6 inquiry. It is adding another layer to what we know about the investigation. Prosecutors working for special counsel jack smith wanted to take a close look at trumps long dormant twitter account. And we dont know exactly why what they were looking for. We do know that trump knew nothing about it. A judge agreed to let prosecutors keep it a secret. They were afraid that he would destroy evidence. Twitter shut down trumps account for about 2 years. So it could be some sort of company data or metrics. It could exactly where certain tweets were posted. Part of what were looking at here is what he said and the actions that his statements cost. The professor says it is really clear of the statements trump made on twitter did play a big role in the allegations. A detailed in the most recent indictment can adjusting. Thank you for that. This is at the sheetz or steel factory. The fire is contained, but there is still a lot of smoke and that is the big concern tonight because that smoke is coming from a pile of recycled steel and metal be on steel. All kinds of different materials are gathered in. Theyre putting out that dark cloud of smoke and firefighters have indicated as long as youre inside, you should be ok, but, you know, we should point out and and justine, had firefighters tell me this over the years ive covered those kinds of things. Any smoke is toxic. Yes, any kind of smoke toxic. You dont want it in your lungs, but this in particular could be. Extremely dangerous, especially if you have a breathing condition because of the heavy metals that could be in there. And right now since it is kind of a recycling center, nobody knows exactly what kinds of metals are burning and what other material by mixed in with their that could Petroleum Products associated with it. So thats just all kinds of questions about what is in that smoke. So the best advice would be if you smell smoke, close your doors and windows and try to get out of that smoky area because this is drifting right across the port of oakland toward the nimitz freeway towards the east. So its blowing inland towards the foothills. So this is not a good situation for people who are downwind from the Oakland Fire Department has asked people to take the Necessary Health precautions and theyre working with the Alameda County Health Department right now. So they can get updates on air quality. So when we talk to the Fire Department live during kron, 4 news at 6, theyre asking you stay inside. Stay away from the area. If youre home close your windows and doors, theyre working to contain it. And dan thorn who was live there when you gave us our report at the top of the hour, seeing it kind of smelled like plastic. And he was several 100 yards away. Yiah, and he was up when so he was really a really far away from the smoke. It was traveling opposite. From where he was standing. So again, this smoke is going to out there in the air, probably for a good part of the night, if not all night long and has a good start, youre not going really be able to see it. But if you smell it, then the thing to do is to get inside and close your doors and windows because its not safe other news tonight, by the way, well have more on throughout the evening. We continue to follow the huge disaster thats taking place in hawaii right now. You see the pictures theyre raging wildfires all across maui to most popular Tourist Spots on that island. Those burns hundreds of building at last count, 270 have been destroyed. At least 6 people have been killed by the flames. Dozens more have been hurt. The 911 system is down in parts of the island, countless homes and businesses have been destroyed. Just makes you when you look at it. It just remind you of all the terrible fires that have happened in the north just brings back a lot of bad memories and their thousands of people who are now. Waiting in order to get out of those flames and theyre waiting in evacuation shelters. Kron fours rob nesbitt talked with some people who had to evacuate and has this report. The devastation from wildfires on the island of maui is evident from the air and on land. This video shows the small town of la hina being overtaken by flames morning said rack recorded this giant plume of smoke in the distance tuesday as she was driving with her family for a week vacation and come up. Holly, just a few miles north of la hina, we saw power lines flying off the power poles. And all of a sudden we see the biggest plume of smoke coming up closer to liner, the family made the executive decision to turn around and head towards the east side of maui away from the flames. Thousands of tourists making the same move as towns like behind a were destroyed. Everyone goes there with all the shops excursions and votes restaurants. And so its really devastating see the news. Residents on the island were terrified to see fire lines move closer and closer to their homes. Its hard to say how far away the fire is. Looks like its a mile from the ranch. Doctor George Martin recorded from his phone as strong winds blew the wildfire towards his ranch. He was able to evacuate all of his animals by 10 00pm tuesday to back our forces. Our capitol at our goats, he feels like one of the lucky ones as his home was spared, but still without power wednesday, the doctor planning on spending his day volunteering with other medical professionals to help those injured in the fire. Head out of the hospital just triage where i specialize in. So anyway, thats thats very situation, particularly for those trapped line of sight. Visitors have been urged to leave maui as soon as possible. But flights back are not easy to get. Cedric says the earliest flight she was able to book for her family was a saturday morning direct flight to san jose reporting in the newsroom. Im rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. And now lets talk about our forecast for taking this live. Look here at the golden bridge. But first, were going to go back to hawaii, but we have a reporter live on the scene and were going to listen to live report so you can get a quick update. There there were about 3 or 4 different spots that were. On fire at bill and a fire being the strongest for sure. But definitely seems like its coming down. And we did just see a helicopter up there. So im sure theyre helping paying those flames out. But until thats completely out, its going to be easy night for all of these residents who are down haleakala. Now earlier this morning, mayor bissen said the up country fires were not contained and 1100 acres have burned. Its safe to assume more acres have burned since then. But this wind has penned relentless and it keeps falling. And the smoke is now finally decreasing. But it is making its way down to key. Hey, making the air quality. Im sure quite bad down there. We went over to a cooler loni and i know cooler areas. Homes were completely burned to the ground, including cars. There are some homes right next door where they were totally find. I spoke to one of those girls who said that her house remained intact simply because she thinks put enough water on top of her roof and others just smart werent so lucky. Spokesman other ladies that the Community Came together to help protect your home and save her home. And then we had a or residents who evacuated right up here to a country. And heres what one of them had to say. We were just going to her feet. So we werent going to able to hear the the interview that she was getting from the tape. But just to update a description because it straight hours different. So its i35 the afternoon. Still daylight in hawaii and the winds, lawrence. Yeah, the big issue she described really see it video the whipping out there. They decreased a little bit. But those just whipping in that area. Of course, you get an active fire that some gusts over 80 miles an hour today and that fire really starting at night, which made it even more dangerous and deadly. And you can that hurricane passing to the south as dora, that very deep area of low pressure, even though its over 800 miles away from the line island, just pressure difference between High Pressure, the north and that area of low pressure door to the south. And that really caused those very strong winds. Here are the very wind gusts across the island. You can still see some of those winds. 2028 miles an hour across maui right now. Of course, the big island, a little bit different. But as that hurricane pulls away, those winds will begin to decrease. And i think by tomorrow well notice a significant calming of those winds and that will be some good news. But been a lot higher before. Its a beautiful, beautiful location. Just the devastation to be seen. There is really hard to the 2 of you were talking earlier about a big. A banyan tree thats there and there trying to save it. Its its in the town square of la hina. Its right on the on the edge of the and its a tucked between strings of shops and restaurants and so on. And its just this incredibly beautiful banyan tree. Its huge and its been there for like 200 years. Yeah. 200 years. And its something that you would see at disneyland. It doesnt look real. Its so intricate and fascinating so yeah, it on the bottom. And i think it doesnt seem like a trend. There was a lot of concern about that banyan tree survive. And right now we we havent heard yet. I think were putting it up on the on the this right behind us, big screen. Youve been there to this area, you would have you would know is the landmark of la hina. Look how big those branches are. See it, the trunks go down roots go down off of the branches into the ground. Its just such a an a work of nature. Its its the most famous tree in hawaii without a doubt. Hopefully they were able to save it or protected point do something to preserve i did see some satellite pictures of the aftermath with the fire zone. And, you know, its a grainy white satellite shot. Hard to get real specific, but look like theyre still vegetation where the tree was. So i was making the assumption that it survived. But we just dont know i still early and they long night ahead, those winds, they continue to how out there some of the fires are going to continue to rage tonight. Those winds really calm down and we have such a special attachment to hawaii here in the bay area, you know, going back to the pan am clipper days. You know . Yeah, people from the bay area who lived part time. We all have friends and family that travel there all the time. A lot of us go there. And as i mentioned earlier, its hard to go to maui without running into some money from the bay area there. I know. Im right. A friend of a friend. So to see that happen, its almost like its in our own backyard as well. It feels like it. You its very well take a break and be right back. Your next uber ride may be recorded beginning today. Riders and drivers in San Francisco can now use audio recording safety feature and ubers around the city. Uber says the inapp safety feature will allow drivers and riders to record audio for the duration of the trip, the audio files and then be encrypted and stored directly on the users device.
