Kron fours rob nesbitt is in our newsroom with reaction from people from the bay area who are stuck in hawaii tonight. And our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow standing by now in the Weather Center with the latest on hurricane dora. But well start with sarah and how are things looking there at the airport . People are coming back and theyre sharing their stories about what they experienced in maui. Well, its like a vacation that turns into a nightmare for some of these tourists, thousands of them trying to get home from maui after that vacation ended with flames everywhere in that line area. Weve got this is the board over there with him on during the flight. A not a lot of flights until tonight, but theres going to be some people flying in from different airports such louis, which is the main airport in maui. And then some of them are being diverted to take other flights from other islands are going any other island that will take them to make sure people can get home. And im sure people want to get home to the bay area. Those who are visiting maui talked to a few of them. I have a friend who was flying out when the fire erupted. His flight got canceled. All the hotels books. We actually rented a car, slept in there and then had to drive moving around because he kept having to be evacuated. Now the kahului airport, it remains open, but its been very stressful over there reported, at least 6 flights delayed. A couple Flights Canceled as well due to the ongoing emergency. I see a few flights coming in tonight. As i said, hawaiian airlines, united air canada. They seem to be on time right now. Flights heading to maui are mostly delayed or canceled, you know, want to go to maui right now, of course. And we talked to a few people who have said, of course, they heard about the news devastating news and they pivoted to fly to another airline or start another island rather. Lets hear from some people who are affected now. Were on the next flight. Not a problem. And then we started talking about and then we found out about all the west side is now what we heard was on fire. We contacted the hotel. We contacted all the reservations and they were pretty there was there were very helpful is that they understand its not something on but what were really concerned, were just glad that a lot of people going to be okay. They told us that airports closed weekold, lady, with our vrbo is great to support me. We just switched or plan to conan. We have to clinton will find a vrbo will so you hear people are pivoting. Theyre scrambling and it does not make for a fun vacation. If you know someone who is flying home from hawaii, make sure that you let them know to check their flight status. Make sure youre picking up someone at the airport tonight. Whether be here at sfo, oakland, san jose. You check that flight status as well. Its a fluid situation. I know a lot of people anxious to hear from the relatives over on maui. Lot of people dont have service. So this is something were continuing to monitor. Im Sarah Stinson reporting live at sfo. Back to all right. Yeah, theres a lot of strong connections between people here in the bay area and people have family over there back and forth, shuttling back and forth. Thank you. Sarah will stay in touch with you to get the latest from there. Meantime, the west side of maui. In in particular is where the worst devastation occurred. Kron fours rob nesbitt spoke with a bear area woman who had to evacuate. Shes still stuck on the island. Hes live in our newsroom with the latest. Just even can tourists are now getting alerts to avoid areas of maui. But this fire caught absolutely everyone off guard during the early stages forcing lifesaving decisions to evacuate like one family i spoke to visiting from the bay area. The devastation from wildfires on the island of maui is evident from the air and on land. This video shows the small town of la hina being overtaken by flames morning said rack recorded this giant plume of smoke in the distance tuesday as she was driving with her family for a week vacation and come up. Holly, just a few miles north of la hina, we saw power lines flying off the power poles. And all of a sudden we see the biggest plume of smoke coming up closer to liner, the family made the executive decision to turn around and head towards the east side of maui away from the flames. Thousands of tourists making the same move as towns like behind a were destroyed. Everyone goes there with all the shops excursions and boats restaurants. And so its really devastating see the news. Residents on the island were terrified to see fire lines move closer and closer to their homes. So its hard to say how far away the fire is. Looks like its a mile from the ranch. Doctor George Martin recorded from his phone as strong winds blew the wildfire towards his ranch. He was able to evacuate all animals by 10 00pm tuesday to get you back with your forces. Our capitol at our goats. He feels like one of the lucky ones as his home was spared, but still without power wednesday, the doctor planning on spending his day volunteering with other medical professionals to help those injured in the fire. Head out of the hospital triage. Burns is i specialize so anyway. Thats a its very situation, particularly for those trapped line of sight. Visitors have been urged to leave maui as soon as possible. But flights back are not easy to get said. Rex says the earliest flight she was able to book for her family was a saturday morning direct flight to san jose reporting live in the newsroom. Im rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. And hurricane door is playing a big role in these Deadly Wildfires. Yeah, we know all too well. The effect wind can have on fires. And yeah, same situation. Yeah. Saw some 80 mile an hour gusts across maui today. And so really just fanning the flames of those fires and hard to believe dora. Its some 860 miles away from the Hawaiian Islands. But the way its set up, youve got a very deep area of low pressure. Thats a major hurricane. Then youve got High Pressure setting itself up to the north. So really kind of funneling all those gusty winds right across the wine islands. You see the counterclockwise circulation right around or the wind gradient setting itself up and all of a sudden you get the winds also funneling around that ridge of High Pressure are clockwise fashion. Why caught right in between. And that really brought those strong gusty winds. In fact, it is still very gusty across the Hawaiian Islands right now as things will continue to improve. I think in the next 24 hours. But here are the very latest wind gusts. You can a lanai city. Theyre 26 mile an hour winds across maui gusts over 20 Miles Per Hour on an open flame. All those areas shaded in red red flag warnings up all the way down into kauai and the big island to and of course, honolulu. So heres the good news. A dora, which is a major hurricane, so sustained winds of 130 miles an hour. It is moving in the west and its moving south of the line island chain. The very latest forecast has it looking like its going to continue to track way from hawaii . So the good news is even though its going to maintain strength, its going to be pushing away from the wine highlands. That means pressure, grady that were talking about is going to lessen. And that means less winds expected in the next 24 hours. In fact, decreasing winds more turning toward breeze as we head in toward tomorrow afternoon in hawaii. Kai, expect to you. Thanks for that. Well have more of coverage from hawaii as we continue throughout the evening. Meantime, other news tonight. In oakland, police are investigating a homicide just after 9 oclock last night. Senator feinstein has said she will not seek reelection in 2024, but hes shown no interest in resigning early with 3 members of congress spying for her position. Theres also been mostll silence among democratic lawmakers about are stepping down early and letting the governor appoints someone there isnt a natural successor, a logical successor werent easy alternative for Governor Newsom and democrats to rally around as an alternative and and given that, i think theres at least a temptation to say, well. The Oakland Fire Department will be on the scene for several hours trying to put that fire out. But you can see it is still putting up quite a bit of smoke. And theres no doubt that smoke is toxic. When youre talking about a Metal Recycling facility will keep you posted throughout the night. Coming up, what weve learned about a search warrant to change earlier this year to dig into Donald Trumps twitter account when the special counsel didnt want the former president to know about learned today that the special counsels office obtained a search warrant for former president trumps twitter account early this year. Court documents reveal a monthslong battle with twitter now known as ax for information tied to the former president s account kron fours. Catherine heenan is in our newsroom. She has the latest. Hi, katherine. Tai. Well, this warrant was obtained in january. Were just hearing about it now. Part of the reason thats interesting, it is the first known example of federal prosecutors directly searching Donald Trumps communications. That was a part of the january 6 inquiry. It is adding another layer to what we know about the investigation. Prosecutors working for special counsel jack smith wanted to look at trumps long dormant twitter account. We dont know yet exactly what they were looking for. We do know that trump knew nothing about it. A judge agreed to let prosecutors keep it a secret from him. They were afraid he would destroy evidence. Thats why twitter shut down trumps account. You might remember for about 2 years, not long after the january 6 incident today trump reacted on social media. His social media saying in part, quote, just found out that crooked joe bidens department of justice secretly attacked my twitter account. He went on to call it a major hit on his civil rights last night in New Hampshire before the twitter story broke, the former president was promising supporters he would keep talking about the cases against him. Sorry. Im not allowed to talk about somehow. Thats good for votes to it right. When we say i can adjust that. I will talk about it. I will. Theyre not taking away my first amendment. They indicted your president. Your former president was very popular. 75. So now they ripped off the top. They took the gloves off and we can say whatever we want. Twitter initially delayed in complying with the subpoena to let prosecutors delve into trumps accoun. So judge also fined the company 350,000. Back to you. All right, catherine, thank you for that. For more analysis is on the search warrant. Loyola marymount law professor Jessica Levinson joins us live tonight to your reaction to all of this and the fact that it was kept secret for so long. Well, it was kept secret on purpose. The prosecution here said that twitter should not let anybody know because as you just heard from kathryns reporting that they were worried that it would threaten the investigation. Its interesting that twitter fought so hard not to turn over this information, in fact, so hard that they were found in contempt of court. And its interesting. This is the first instance where we see that the special prosecutor has directly asked for the former president S Communications and of course, what was actually posted twitter is all public. So the question is, why did they ask for this information . What was the nonpublic information that they were seeking . What would you be able to get from a warrant since tweets are public . You could just go on to his twitter account and see what he wrote. Is it drafts that he might have made that never made it out there like what does . Asking forward for something that you can see really do for the investigation. So i mean, i wish i knew that answer for sure. And i think that youre right to think it must be something that has to be something. Where its not a publish tweet because thats easy enough to get. So it could be some sort of company data or metrics. It could exactly where certain tweets were posted. It could exactly what type of account interacted with the former president hu saw and are re tweeted his messages and is there Additional Information about those accounts that interacted with the former president . Because, again, part of what were looking at here is what he said and the actions that his statements cost. It would also include any internal debate emails within the company about how to deal with president trumps information or any any other interaction between trump or his team and twitter. That was not posted, but some kind you know, messaging that could have taken place over twitter. So it could include direct messages. I mean, to your know, in terms of other communications or communications internal to twitter. Im not sure if that goes to the scope of the subpoenaed materials here. Is this considered an aggressive move by the special counsel to take this direction or is this just something any investigator would do during a course of the case . You know . This case is so unusual for so many circumstances for so many reasons that its hard to say, oh, this is a typical move, but i would say it is absolutely an indication that the former president was a target of this investigation. Well, before he ever got that target letter, i understand that doesnt directly respond to what you ask me. But were talking about a subpoena from back in january. And its very clear indication that the special counsel was we can use the words aggressively or we can use the words very conservatively or specifically. But he was looking into statements and communications that the former president made and we see in the indictments that the statements he made on twitter really do play a large role in the allegations that make up that 45 patients right does this change anything about the ongoing debate that weve been having over technology and and personal privacy . And a company that has your data or access to your data releasing that information. You know, police have been trying to get into iphones, you know, for suspect information. And the person doesnt want to give up their password, then they go to apple to try to get it. This is change any of especially with Tech Companies kind of being put on notice said were going to get a search warrant and were going to get that information one way or the other. Yeah, its a great question. I dont know if it changes it or if its a reminder of essentially what you just asked me about, which is that Law Enforcement can get information from private companies. And that includes private social media companies. And so to the extent that we dont want Law Enforcement to get information about us, then dont post i mean, i know that sounds obvious. But things that you post on facebook and twitter and instagram and tiktok. All of that information. If there is, in fact, probable can be subpoenaed. And this is another reminder thank you so much. Loyola university, Loyola Marymount law professor Jessica Levinson, thank you for joining us. Coming up here. But near the estuary, this was just a short time ago about a half hour ago or so. Oakland fire is on the scene. They say they have the fire contained to one pile of debris. But so far it is not under control. So were continue following this story and were now joined on the phone by michael hunt, this spokesman for the open fired up. Mister hart, thanks for joining us give us the latest the status of that fire. Thanks very much.
