In place today at 1 oclock goes into effect take a look at your map now you can see the most of the bay area is in pain which means the red flag warning going into one this afternoon is for these areas, the glass fire region where that fire is burning in the north bay east bay hills Santa Cruz Mountains the last time we saw a red flag warning was when that glass fire erupted over the weekend. So this is time to have that go bag ready and take it seriously theyre going to be northwest winds of 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour with gusts of 20 to 30 Miles Per Hour. We also will have those dry conditions that are just showed you across the bay area and that was low humidity. Thats whats bad thats what causes a fire of a power alert is going in effect at 3 this afternoon theyre asking people to conserve electricity. So we can avoid a power outage. Heres some tips on your screen turn your thermostat to 78 degrees turn off unnecessary lights close blinds and drapes keep your home cool and dont use major appliances like your laundry machines or dishwashers to do all those types of tours before 3 oclock unplug any unneeded electrical devices and again to reiterate power alert going into effect at 3 goes until 10 oclock red flag warning in effect from one this afternoon until tomorrow could be extended if these conditions continues so be prepared help out how you can with electricity and stay cool because again going to be triple digits a lot of the bay areas going to experience this reporting live in concord Sarah Stinson kron 4 news okay, ready is still no one can do about it sure all the drapes and everything do writers think thank you very much sara film on the tell all the things that. Are too dangerous. Well its not safe to be outside and already so bad, i dont need these take the trash out now thats im doing my part you can see the air quality today is going to be horrible all the areas in red and orange those locations you really want to stay inside the yellows not great, but at least its a little better. Weve got john trouble taking a closer look at the weather for today in the air quality dance where im so hot. I want to open the window but then it smoky and then i what a day or a couple theres no winning. Except now you have the generator the fan at least theres definitely holding on to the tiny Little Things today because theres not a lot about todays forecast that i think most of us are going to enjoy nice view of San Francisco, at least we can enjoy that this morning. It is noticeably hazy out there albeit nice and clear take that in for just a second before we get to the unfortunate part of all this which is the heat advisories and peach and the red flag warnings in red for the north bay, the east bay mountains as well as Santa Cruz Mountains where those red flag warnings are because winds are going to pick up tonight that paired with the heat and those heat advisories which earned ph a record breaking temperatures this afternoon. Well into the triple digits. Now you saw this map just a second ago, but just to reiterate to you how poor air quality will be today pockets in san jose as well as vacaville in napa where air quality is very pap or and honestly just quite hazardous right now little closer to the coast some improved pockets, but really all across the bay area, not one you want to venture outside for too terribly long definitely dont do any activities that youre going to exert yourself too much for 60s and 70s for most of our current temperatures. It is nice and cool in the north bay in the 50s, good news for the vicinity of the glass fire as its cool and calm out there. Its not going to be that way this afternoon temperatures will really start to skyrocket well into the triple digits, not just for in the north bay around the glass fire. But all across our inland areas bayside areas solidly into the 90s and our hottest day of the remainder of this forecast which ill talk more about still to come over to you robin. All right, thank you john were checking in on the commute which continues to pick up around the bay area starting off with one of our more crowded bridges and thats 92 the san mateo bridge, heres a live look at your drive between hayward and san mateo and of course its heavier westbound which is on the right hand side thats the commute direction. Its been philly and since 04 00am and still going strong off to foster city and san mateo but youre overall drive time looks really good so no complaints here at 13 minutes off to one oh one here at the bay bridge. This is actually an improvement compared to the 6 oclock hour. It appears as though traffic is always winding down but you never know whats going to pop up. We dont have any hot spots but its improving already slow from west grand and then coming off the upper deck, im noticing some busy traffic right around mid span. On the skyway and continuing out to the one oh one split. No reports of any problems, but its quite heavy approaching downtown San Francisco and the east bay looks good 24 5. 80 the nimitz just minor crowding on 80 west through berkeley daria. A lot robin 7 05 and lets get to the wildfires burning in napa and Sonoma County strong winds could blow the flames back in to Populated Areas that have already been evacuated or areas where people have only gotten morning so far so they need be ready still to leave. 51,000 plus acres have burned the fires are only 2 contained and theyve destroyed 288 homes plus in napa and sonoma counties and more than 26,000 other structures are still threatened right now so we are keeping our eye on where the winds blow now expect a strong winds and hot temperatures all conspiring over the next few days as firefighters are concerned about. The further spread of the glass fire crews are putting their focus right now in protecting homes in areas like angwin in napa county there nestled in the hills that small town is just above the town of deer park west of calistoga and neighbors there that have evacuated or anxious of course about whats to come. The next few days. Biggest concern is the fire up north of the northern end of it, well wrap back around and compean hill on the on the east side of england has played the biggest concern. Earlier my concern was over on press month that it come down and come up the drought here at falls. But it seems like that may be little more contained at this point dont pretty good and i know theyre working hard theyre doing their best and are so appreciative of everything theyre doing to try to say the community. Firefighters have already made brake lines on the outer edges of angwin some behind private homes near walnut lane and keys avenue. The glass fire isnt just people who live in homes in app and sonoma counties but also businesses wineries which the area so well known for the glass fire has taken a number of them down in calistoga saint helene a deer park destroying millions of dollars of wine and structures in calistoga the famous castello di amorosa last about 10,000 cases of wine, their farm house burned down and that alone is a loss of 45 Million Dollars and tourism has already taken a hit because of the pandemic so now theyve got wildfires keeping people away. Weve been averaging around 50 Hotel Occupancy this summer a little higher on the weekends, a little during the weekdays but in a 50 to 55 versus a normal is pretty good considering we are in the in the midst of a pandemic. Another business damaged in the fire is the of meadow wood resort a 5 star very famous pricey resort. They lost 5 or 6 of their cottages and the main michelinstar restaurant on the property is gone. Well now lets take a look at the situation in Sonoma County, particularly in santa rosa were numerous homes are either damaged or destroyed by the fire. Lets take a look at the map this is where reyna harvey is this morning for us off the highway 12 and montana road near the sky Hawk Community that is the area weve been zeroing in on showing you the damage and in some cases, the homes that are Still Standing rana. And the sun is up now you can see all the damage and there is quite a lot let me go ahead and show you guys right now first is starting on the side of the road you can see all of these trees and burn down shrubbery along the highway here since ive been here. Hot spots are popping up one of the trees actually in the area to one of the limbs from the trees started to fall down you could see well just wiring year, but i want to show you you can see this is a long montana road and just the devastation that the fire has had here on this community. Right here this home you can see. Surprise that its even standing here especially since Everything Else in its backyard is burned down, but those hot spots like i mentioned. The firefighters are talking about. One right near one. Continues to pop up. This tree limb actually fell over. While its here because of the hot spot, but you can see. Well the back part of his home. All of the cars. Let this person owns has been burned. But here also they have some equipment in the back of the house that whole back here has been a house adjacent to that that house Still Standing over there. On the one behind the air that home down there. Still standing so the difference between this fire in Law Enforcement was talking to me about this earlier. This fire and the thomas fire is that in the tubbs fire. You had several homes that were bombed and maybe a house or 2. I was Still Standing but in this fire. You have homes. Have been singled out right back in this home is burned here. But then you have other homes that are Still Standing as a result of that so i would say the biggest thing for people in this area you that they are allowing a comeback in certain communities. Just to be careful and mindful because there are still quite a lot of hot spot. You got a lot of electricity poles. Were still down on the ground. The air quality in the area as i started to drive along the road here is really bad one very smoky. In this area and we specially when you have the hot spots you guys are talking about. The when topping up in the heat, popping up all along highway 12. And not just the homes but all along highway 12. The trees and shrubbery the roadside as you see first and different equipment crews, passing along highway 12 here. Was Law Enforcement ran along the roadway here. So you see the back of that house burn. The front of the house here only hang that was really is the sense and theyre. I hear is Still Standing up. This side. Well the home now you can see where the fire. Torch here a lot of the trees have been since as well. So in the coming days, firefighters, keeping their eyes and ears peeled we said the surge in the weather and the red flag warning thats going to be problematic. For a lot of the First Responders out here do you see this house here 67 on its Still Standing we have. Although these trees here in the front of their cars. You can see here at their address. Have been burned and so its tati. Along highway 12 you could see here. Some houses out in the distance, dont know if you can see that far the dolls houses are Still Standing they dont even look like theyve been touched by fire. Show well be out here exploring this area looking at more the damage. And well bring you some long as the morning goes on the and james, i mean its just some of them to be able to see. You know hold here. This is 1655. That home is still there. All and i think i hear some animals as well so well be out here well bring you more coverage as the morning goes on a fact about in the studio and what do you hear you saying dogs or something or what. Well i think i hear is a rooster chicken or a rooster will rescue a rooster your current. Ill let officials know maybe theres some here you can hear you hear that knew that i there been passed fires, were on where reporters were like dogs. Well sure and then they go, yeah, its but there they are. You can see them there in a little cool back good to know that they survived call so 7. 16 on this thursday morning first day of october and welcoming in the new season with some less than ideal weather as youre entering outside first of all the progress of the glass incident in the north bay we are seeing some light winds and Cool Temperatures up in the north bay right now thats good news for the firefight beyond this though it doesnt get much better were going to be looking at. Heat advisories into the afternoon and red flag warnings into the evening tonight. Fire danger heightened, especially tonight as winds pick up in the north bay, those red flag warnings of the deeper at hugh while heat advisories impeach colors as daytime highs run 15 to 25 degrees above average winds will remain calm for much of the day but really pick up late in the afternoon into evening. Thats when these red flag warnings become of concern as fire danger. Increases rapid spread of fires becomes more possible. Todays daytime highs, not the easiest to look at were in the triple digits for areas like conquered antioch livermore morgan hill and then santa rosa nap and avato in the north bay. It will be our last day with has been the triple digits as will see today. Likely a couple on the map tomorrow but after that we have some 80s to look forward to as soon as sunday. Robin all right, thank you john lets check in on the traffic which is pretty heavy entering San Francisco and i found out we have a stalled big rig. Thats whats causing the slowdown. So lets take a look at it on traffic tracker this is westbound 80 at the 9th Street Civic Center exit that big ridge stuck in the right lane they already have a tow truck on scene but its backing up traffic across the bay bridge through the tunnel and it was already pretty crowded at the toll plaza but beyond that one on one and 2. 80 look good through San Francisco. So its the skyway that stack up and here behind the toll plaza this is why your drive time is now 24 minutes here slow from west grand be 24 minutes after fremont street and states heavy to one o one because of that stalled vick rick james back to you all right, thank you very much rob and Disneyland Resort employees. Welcome back at 7. 29 continuing to follow 2 big stories that combine together really the bay areas under red flag warning as firefighters are bracing for strong winds. They do not want those to fan flames in the glass fire or spark any other fires, no yeah and then of course on the right hand side power alerts a very real possibility today. As weve got all the conditions right for power shut off this afternoon. So youre being urged to conserve as much as you can to try to prevent as much of the power being lost as possible. So lets get to our Team Coverage now of both of these stories first kron 4 Sarah Stinson in concord with the details sarah. And theres a lot of haziness here in concord im actually above conquered and walnut creek on this hillside off of highway 4 and you can see just how hazy it is theres blanket of it above highway for into the left of it and then all across above conquered you can barely see downtown concord which on a clear day it would be very easy to see from here and then on the hillside you can see those dry conditions that were seeing so temperatures of one 04 dry conditions and winds well thats what we call a time to put a red flag warning in place take a look at this map so you can see most of the bay area is in pink, which means the red flag warning is in effect at one this afternoon for the glass fire region that soon be really difficult for firefighters in the north bay east bay hills Santa Cruz Mountains the last time we saw a red flag warning the glass fire up to over the weekend so its very important to take this seriously have that go bag ready because these conditions are concerning theyre going to be northwest winds of up to 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour with gusts of 20 to 30 Miles Per Hour. We also have those dry conditions as telling you about throughout the bay area was low humidity which is a recipe for a wildfire unfortunately we also a power alert going into effect at 3 this afternoon youre being asked to conserve electricity and how might you do that well take a look at your screen. Theres tips like turning off your thermostat are putting it to 70 degrees thats a happy temperature turn off unnecessary lights closed blinds and drapes to keep your home cool and dont use major appliances during the power alert that means no laundry machine usage, no dishwasher uses as james said thats good news, no no need to do chores after 03 00pm unplug unneeded electrical devices and that power alert will be in place until 00 10pm tonight the red flag warning in effect today and to that end tomorrow it will go out of effect but as we know if these conditions stick around that red flag warning will very well be extended so for now in concord we are seeing poor air quality so much jason is not sure if you guys got my video, but its crazy to see the Current Conditions for now reporting live in concord Sarah Stinson kron 4 news all right. Thank you sir, you have your colleagues but terrible just want to say this is getting old, but what can you do complain know. Hope for things to turn around man in a few days yes, i think right john yeah thats exactly right a few days from now things do get better but it is getting old talking about days like today and then especially seeing the devastation. The days like today can cause to really breaks your heart looking outside at San Francisco right now that noticeable haze that sarah was talking about. Cant miss said over San Francisco. Air quality is suffering and then of course its hot and its windy and that is going to result in red flag highest a fire danger come the evening tonight as those winds really pick up the deep red showing you that especially a problematic in the north bay around the glass fire and then in the peach colors, those are heat advisories as daytime highs run 15 to 25 degrees above average for this time of year likely to be shattering records as far as air quality is concerned theres pockets a better conditions and then areas where its not so good but obviously vacaville napa in the vicinity of the glass fire seeing some of your worst of conditions this morning. San jose also a pocket of very very poor air there. A better round ukiah guerneville and even just west of santa rosa. Right along the coastline also some better conditions, not good to be stepping outside especially not doing rigorous activity and those conditions again today, 60s and 70s for most of our current temperatures, the exceptions fortunately are around nevado and santa rosa little cooler up their cool and calm conditions right now around the glass fire which is a good start to what will be a less than ideal rest of your forecast today into our windy evening ahead of us tonight. 90s for bayside cities today well triple digits for inland daytime highs later on today. Get to exactly what is going to be like where youre at this afternoon still to come in your forecast over to you robin all right, thank you john we have a stalled bakery causing a big jam up in San Francisco, its out on the skyway but its impacting traffic on the bay bridge because its all just merging together so the commute was already picking up. And now crews are clearing a stall big rig 80 west at 9th street thats on the skyway just before you get to the one o one central freeway split but take a look at how its backing up traffic across the the skyway on the suspension through the tunnel down the eastern span and through the toll plaza, so yes, its adding to all of that commute traffic and now youre crawling from west grand youre averaging about 22 if you get stuck in traffic. Its not because of a major problem, its a stall big break that theyre working on clearing the tow trucks already on the scene thats why its crawling all of a sudden here at the pay gates so get out there early because you dont want to be late for work if youre going to have to sit in that and the east bay highway forced picking up, but its still under 30 minutes from antioch to concord daria. Thanks a lot rotin lets get to the latest on the fires in napa Sonoma County strong winds could blow the flames back into Populated Areas. Thats why they still have those evacuation orders and people are warned that they could be next so far the glass fires burn 51,000 acres plus its still only 2 contain and has torn through 280 homes in napa and sonoma counties more than 26,000 other structures are still threatened. Thats why the firefighters are watching so closely the wind and authorities are watching those evacuation zones. We have Team Coverage now in napa county as well as the glass fire continues to burn there. We have a map showing where kron fours will tran has been collecting stories for us this morning. Hes just east of calistoga and north of saint helene off of summit lake drive. Heres a closer look now at the fire lines as he season. You see just make sure to clear out the dry vegetation and look at this is like a convoy of bulldozers and other equipment is such a small area that we could not share the road that we had actually to the allow them to get through, but what its doing to the roadway if the marks on the ground, but it is what it is because they need to get to this remote area keep the fire at bay that this is about 4 miles from downtown and the fire continues to burn at this time the fear is the embers will pick carry it went to cal still got to leno as the fires. Our continuing to burn at this time it is extremely hot. Its probably about 75 degrees at my current location. And this has been going on now for about 10 15 minutes. We dont know how long this will continue it looks like theyre coming down here possibly for a change a shift and then coming back up or taking all this equipment to another location is extremely smoky at this time embers of flying everywhere. We do see from time to time huge flames that pop up. A wood has been evacuated calistoga has also been evacuate evacuated as well is such a treacherous area that actually fell down a little hole so you can see whats going on theres that whole that i fell down in la i was just doing this report. This is all the equipment that they need probably even more just to clear out the vegetation that fire all of that trying to make sure that the fire at least stays on the hill on the mountains and not move down to the areas where people live and work back to you. All right, lets continue our Team Santa Rosa koppel says. They dont want to rebuild in the north bay because of the fires they just cant imagine a lot of people say they dont want to be able. This one couple sorry. They say they will because they cant imagine living anywhere else even with the risks of the wildfires and whats happened kron fours Ella Sogomonian has their story. This is the first time that nick and kevin condit were able to come back to see what was left of their santa rosa home. But unfortunately there wasnt much of anything that the flames didnt touch the place they called home and Everything Else inside was leveled by the glass fire after hurried out of there in the Early Morning hours on sunday, he. Hes too to. If is in 50 the couple had just minutes to get out as a wall of fire descended on their santa rosa home. Kevin comforting nikki when she realized that all her chickens had perished too. It was like a part of me is gone. Going to put the fire. Everything we. You you are. Then we made here. Is go on. Kevin sifts through the rubble for any keepsakes the easing at a pile of metal rings and the remains of his wine barrel furniture business you dont know where were going what were going i dont know it is and why going to happen you have to start all over and start all over and just. In jewels. They had no insurance but they escaped with their lives and the clothes on their backs and we got here with each other and that trend in the county finding it came help her with the their landlord will eventually haul a trailer for them to live in on the property while a new home is rebuilt will be for kron 4 news. Im Ella Sogomonian. Time now 7. 40 still ahead here on the kron 00 04am morning news just weeks after being evacuated because of the czu lightning fire in Santa Cruz County in the mountains or theyre now being told to be ready to evacuate again for a very different reason well tell you why. Work in Washington House democrats are making a lastditch effort to pass emergency covid relief money before they head home for a monthlong recess why Senate Republicans say that plan is going nowhere, ill have that full story coming up. Before election day. We washington dc correspondent Raquel Martin with a closer look. Whether the administration wants to work with us or not we are going to pass something democratic congresswoman cheri bustos says ready or not the house is pushing through another emergency covid relief package as a way to say to the american public. We are here to help we know youre hurting we know our Small Businesses are hurting though says the 2. 2 trillion dollar package is a slimmed down version of democrats heroes act passed in we actually brought this proposal down by more than a trillion dollars trillion the plan includes 600 unemployment payments direct checks for families money for Small Businesses and aid for farmers, we have severe sense of urgency because of the people that we serve but republicans say the bill has too much in it and the price tag is still way too high its full of a bright grab bag of special interest giveaways the same old stuff, Missouri Republican senator josh hawley says the bloated spending plan doesnt stand a chance in the senate. And as democrats are still blocking the gop option. Im concerned that there wont be a deal before election day because frankly i dont think the democrats want one, i mean you can look here in the United States senate. They wont even let us debate the issue but treasury secretary steven the newton is not walking away from the table. Wednesday, he met with speaker of the house nancy pelosi to work towards a compromise bill both say they intend to keep talking in washington Raquel Martin. Well heres a quick look at the high temperatures were expecting this afternoon it is going to be a day of triple digit heat inland with red flag warnings in effect and power alerts, potentially this afternoon. Well talk some 47 and it has been just a few weeks in some people in the Santa Cruz Mountains were allowed back after this easy you lightning complex fires and now theyre being told be ready to evacuate again and this time not because of a wildfire. But because the possible mudslides that could follow all in this zone, the fire zone as you can see. There are still you know theres so much just thats right from mudslides because the conditions the vegetation is gone and if theres a debris flow. You know if the rain saturates the ground that can be deadly. Its one thing after another burgers hit with multiple. Catastrophes but youre doing the best we can do. Stay here is our own its mountain leavened bread serious danger of debris flows mudslides landslides. That will come with very little warning after very little rain after a fire this intense. Were trying to get the word out that people should prepare to evacuate. You got to clean up short up as quick as you can before it starts raining. And then yeah be prepared to get out is maybe the problem is rain driven mudslides can happen in an instant they killed several people after the 2018 thomas fire in santa barbara. Remember what happened gosh was last year james okay as an essay was 2 years ago as might have been too you know time flies it was horrible in sausalito but remember that woman when theyre her house when sliding down the mountain in the rain and she actually lived to tell about it was just all right. Well, lets talk more about the weather obviously no rain on the immediate horizon, but plenty of heat john yeah with that heat potential of even further wildfire growth which of course would have an impact on us this winter. When we do eventually get those rains and we have the record acreage from this historic fire season. As far as the east bay goes look at this haze over berkeley youre seeing that all across the bay area in fact air quality less than ideal all across the region, couple of pockets of good stuff right around guerneville and up towards ukiah but most of us either have a moderate por to even very pour impact with the worst of air quality around napa in vacaville as youd expect closer to the glass incident which is burning amid calm and cool conditions. This morning. Really the best time of day for firefighting efforts is right now because later on today, the heat sets in and then into the evening tonight, the winds really start to pick up thats why we have this dual effect of heat advisories. And red flag warning showing up in your advisory map here heat advisories and peach lighting up almost all of the bay area with highs running 15 to 25 degrees above average and then those red areas weve seen those way too much the summer season, red flag warnings as winds really pick up tonight. Now we may be calm right now it may become for much of the day ahead of us but look at where winds are heading on into the evening ahead. Winds gusting as high as 25 to 35 Miles Per Hour, especially for exposed slopes such as around the glass fire. So that is where that risk of rapid growing fire comes from. Now todays daytime highs likely to be breaking some records 90s for mission in an districts in San Francisco 70s closer to the coast, but its 90s in triple digits really elsewhere seeing carlos would sites and detail all up into the triple digits today. Well santa clear up to 96 degrees, san jose at 97 east bay temperatures in the 90s to triple digits with pleasanton dublin. Each at 102 degrees while the creek and concord 104 degrees each oakland berkeley, richmond up to the lay how all the 90s. All right, thank you john im monitoring the trip into San Francisco and the drive time looks a little better so the traffic is recovering from a problem that we had on the skyway earlier i talked about that stall big rig 80 west at 9th Street Civic Center. Thats what caused the gem of coming in so it has improved on the skyway but its crowded on the bridge still back up at the toll plaza and slow from the bottom of the maze but 15 minutes is a huge improvement compared to what was there just 15 minutes ago, so it is Getting Better heres 92 no problems leaving hayward on west 92, 13 minutes thats really quick off to the peninsula. There is a crash on the nimitz in the city of hayward this is northbound at tennis and its blocking one lane. So you see how its backing up in both directions, not a major problem, but its in the way and its a visual distraction for people on the some crowding there for both sides but 5. 80 looks great through livermore and dublin, no problems for 6. 80 minor crowding on one oh one leaving san jose youre averaging 32 minutes northbound on one oh one from san jose to menlo park japes all right robin, thank you 7. 52, well take a quick break but coming up.
