All right the big story yesterday today for the past few weeks looking forward the air quality as we take a live look outside talk about the weather. This is San Franciscos embarcadero. Lawrence karnow here with look at the weather yeah, nice to wake up this morning and see the sky was an orange that was an improvement that meant less smoke in the atmosphere but then that smoke mix down to the surface making the air quality very bad, all that smoke now settling in you can see weve got a long night ahead a very bad air quality near walnut creek right now as we take you back into the bay you can see sfo and you see that smoke down below lights now just kind of hovering there. But weve also had a couple things going on, weve got some fog that is moving in along the coastline. Look at that you see that as its beginning to push on shore. Weve got some dense fog now moving in that means if you live near the coastline. You see the combination that dense fog and that ash coming from the fires make for nice ash cement on your car tomorrow morning. As youre going to see more of that in place so they are calling a very bad right now in around the bay you can see the area shaded in purple in a San Francisco all the way inside the peninsula down through sand, the tail for the south near mountain view. Coming across the bay in Fremont Hayward oakland all those areas looking at some very bad air quality also the north bay seeing a pocket of some very had bad air quality into the napa valley and on on poor air quality all around you see in red here this is poor quality as well that will be the case throughout the night tonight as the smoke just going to kind of settle in up tomorrow. We may see some improvement by the afternoon but again this is going to be a little bit improvement each day were not seeing a very strong wind enough to mix out all of that smoke so well get that seabreeze kicked in still a look at that poor air quality spare the air day again for tomorrow all around the bay area and theyre going to be times where that smoke settles into some of these neighborhoods and its going to be extremely unhealthy all right. We have that offshore wind that north northeast wind that brought all smoke from the bear fire also in the august complex fire that swept the back in the bay area even all the way out the pacific now the good news is the wind has switched direction. So the source of all that smoke has been cut off so weve got some local fires burning that is that in your smoke concerns here but most of that smoke now pushed off the coastline is starting to sweep back on shore so even though weve cut off all the smoke, you still got some smoke out of the pacific left over from those fire so that being said you can see theres a change now in the pattern starting to see more of a westerly component of when those means the winds coming up on the west and that offshore wind that is some good news that will help to improve their quality winds outside though not very strong just a light breeze out there right now in fact it is calm in parts of the north bay inside the bay and that is not good news. If you want to try to get rid of that smoke is just going to kind of sit around. I think tomorrow morning we start out with some very thick smoke early on by the afternoon, hopefully. It starts to clear up just a little bit anyway, skies. All right, thank you lawrence, our wildfire coverage continues now with the tragic development we learned about a few hours ago at least 10 people. Are now dead and several others are injured up in butte county near paradise from a fire that they had been calling the bear fire cal fire changed its name this morning to the north complex west zone fire. Crews say they found 7 bodies today after finding 3 yesterday and more than a dozen people are still missing tonight. These flames have destroyed about 2000 buildings as well, the creek fire burning in Fresno County that is 6 contained tonight. This is the first containment progress reported since that fire started on friday. The fire has grown to nearly a 176,000 acres and destroyed 360 structures so far more than 1300 personnel are out there helping to battle this fire. Experts say the californias historic drought and the resulting insect attacks thats whats contributing to the intensity of the creek fire in Fresno County with the same conditions exist in parts of Northern California here as well, none is lonnie wong explains now the fire danger due to an overload of dry fuels. Has been known for years. The creek fire in Fresno County is being fueled in part by millions of trees that died during the historic 5 year drought that ended in 2017 killed by bark beetles which attacked water stress trees, theres a lot of needles and branches and wood. That is really fueling this fire but there are millions of dead trees in Northern California too along with areas of overgrown force that natural fires once kept in check the underlying conditions forest conditions. Are really similar and that we have a lot of forests that are simply way over ground with the u. S. Forest service has been inclined to let remote fires burn to reduce feels. The massive north complex fire above oroville as part of a berm the smoldering for weeks and the Plumas National forest but federal fire Officials Say that was an intentional instead they say federal firefighting capability was spread too thinly to get it under control. Cutting down dead trees and prescribed burns are used to reduce the spread of wildfires. But in the end wildfires react to weather conditions. Winds are high. Its really dry. Theres you know a lot of fuel on the ground there burning so catastrophic we because these are the conditions where we cant control that we must also have the Fire Prevention program called living with fire. Limited resources being targeting prevention kerry put enough youll break or prescribed fire around communities. Californias Sierra Nevada conservancy fun such targeted work, but with 25 million acres to oversee the work is moving slowly. Trees killed by bark beetles can stay standing for years, but they are ticking time bombs you have the very real potential for those trees to come down on the ground to make them even larger fires, the conservancy has the fun fuel. Clearing projects carefully with limited moneys its expensive. But i think what were seeing with the fires that are occurring right now. Were paying for it anyway. In sacramento lonnie wong. Indeed we are studies in california and nationwide show that fuel clearing strategies enable communities too better survive big wildfire. Yeah but given limited resources. Fire Officials Say its wise for Property Owners to implement their own prevention measures when they can fire crews continue to make major progress on fires burning here in the bay area the lnu lightning complex in the north bay is currently 95 contained. Nearly 1500 structures have been destroyed there. Containment of the scu complex fires in the east and the south bays thats up to 98 nearly 140 structures there have been destroyed. The c z you lightning complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties. Thats up to 85 containment more than 900 homes though have been destroyed and the woodward fire at the point raze National Seashore in marine county thats now 95 contained. So here in the bay area. Good news much of the fire danger is now gone from the fires, including that lnu complex that scorch. A lot of the north bay crossing our fingers and but that complex the fires that you know has been burning now for 23 days or forcefully chagall shows us people who lost their homes are now working toward getting back on their feet. It looks bad but John Phillips does not feel like hes lost everything sure his home on can low road in vacaville is gone burned down in the hennessy fire 3 weeks ago one of the major wildfires making up the lnu lightning complex but his wife and grown son who also lived here are alive and well were hoping for. The to do a rebuild and fortunately the home was insured this is a new process for john though he and his wife a retired music teachers and hes not sure how its all going to work out. Right now hes focused on marking the water gas and electrical lines so before contractors stopped by his 10 acre property to clear debris then hell regroup from there we not everything covered. So were hoping that the state and the county can have some disaster relief. On this. But thats unknown at this time what is known is that his community in Solano County will have a different look for quite some time. The fire torched more than 305,000 acres of land still he says he and his family are committed to staying here you know its just things. All right so it this kind of horrible out there and said fits with the year hearts karnow is here get us out of this mess. My man oh my goodness we may just see some bigger changes as we get into next week right now were kind of locked into this pattern you see the smoke out there right now this looking from the Berkeley Hills that smoke filling the bay now in all around the bay area. Were seeing sites just like it, but temperature wise weve got some 50s and some 60s outside right now with some fog beginning to move in along the coastline, a little drizzle beginning to show up some dense fog along the coast as well so watch out for that traveling late tonight and early tomorrow morning right what we need is a major pattern change weve had whats called a rex block ridge. It forms kind of those wrecks pattern here and thats whats blocked us from seeing any big changes and usually they take a long time to move out. This no exception so yeah were going to see more of that haze for tomorrow again i think slowly improving were waiting till this low its been spinning off the coastline for almost a week now finally get some reinforcements and then begin to move toward the bay area by sunday see that influx of the clouds begin to move in would be nice to get some rain in your doesnt look like thats going to happen. But certainly a chance theyre going to see some rain up 7 northwest in oregon where theyve had all the fires that would be great news for them were going to catch the trailing edge of the system as it gets a little bit closer and pretty typical this time of year it will fall apart by the time we get your but the good news is that its going to help to start to mix out cloud deck of that were seeing all that smoke, well get more of a sea breeze kicking in the winds are going to pick up we should get a nice breath of fresh air is that system comes by the no one right behind it so certainly a little more active now as we get in toward. Fall and looks like its going to stay that way so temperatures are going to come down as well see a cooler weather again for tomorrow then warming back up on saturday and sunday temperatures staying below the average partly cloudy day theres even a hint we could see some showers in Northern California by next wednesday.
