Now we want to get a check of the weather and that forecast there for the gulf coast with john trouble yang guys that storm made landfall last night at 01 00am in Cameron Parish southern louisiana and resulted in some pretty decent storm surge right up and down the coastline, although not as high as it could have been which is your first bit of good news out of the system that was going to be plenty of news thats not so good including these very strong winds made landfall last night as a category 4 hurricane weakening now to category 2 status as it continues to push inland across the state those southern parishes of the state are still looking at some incredible storm surge including around lake charles, the most populated impacted city and storm surge stretching as far as 30 to 40 miles inland as that c works its way up into the very low lying by is on the southern end of the state has this category 2 system works further northward it will continue to weaken, but dump plenty of water with it as well some very strong winds all the way into the midwest. So if you have travel plans out this direction youre likely to see some interruptions as that storm continues to push inland as for conditions here locally we have some smoke and some fog mixed in together that is having a big impact as youre stepping outside this morning very dense fog in portions of the north bay as well as along the coastline will have an impact in visibility at times this morning in Napa Santa Rosa nevado and in San Francisco. So as the oakland and hit other hillsides of the east bay, some of that fog is it the cleanest either especially not in the north bay where we have unhealthy conditions this morning. You do have respiratory conditions. We are seeing a slightly cooler start to the morning than yesterday so its got a brisk feel to it out there. Go ahead throw that jacket on this morning and look forward to a pretty comfortable afternoon just around the corner. James all right john thank you, lets turn our attention to the wildfires that are burning now 3 extremely large fires burning. In parts of the bay area with crews making progress. So heres the update, according to cal fire the lnu lightning complex fires, the north bay fires. Now 33 contained the scu lightning complex fires in parts of the east and south bay, 30 contained and the czu august lightning complex fires burning in san mateo and santa cruz counties. Now 21 contained so making some progress. We have Team Coverage of the czu lightning complex fire in san mateo and santa cruz counties in this map shows you the area burned by those fires covers will tran is live at the Cal Fire Base Camp in Scotts Valley with the latest this morning. Well. Talk about progress james and area. Yes were now at 21 containment up 2 per cent since yesterday but what theyre doing is theyre stopping from the fire from exploding in terms of acreage right now were sitting at a little bit more than 11,000 icy 81,000 acres and yesterday at this time we were around 80 so its still burning but a lot of the acres that are added on to now are controlled burns to the port were james darya great news to pass along that campus of u c santa cruz, the Evacuation Orders have been lifted so theyre going to systematically. Bring people back on to campus they protected it for days now the fire never touched it to the point where they felt safe enough now to allow people to return to the residential areas of you see santa cruz. Some of the other areas, including Scotts Valley, the unincorporated areas, my current location, people could be returned to their home in days, maybe a couple of days from now felton that could be a week out so we getting closer as far as evacuees, returning to their locations and were talking about 77,000 people had to be evacuated. There are neighborhoods that are so decimated that theres nothing to return to and theyre still telling people do not sneak past checkpoints because you can kick you could get hurt you could get killed and you are taking away resources from the authorities or still very much. They have their hands full battling this fire which has been burning for more than a week now we get a chance to track down some evacuees. Heres what they had to say about the progress. You get to a point where its just moves came like its gray like like all the pictures of the moon and. And this is gone. And then another 100 feet 200 feet, theres this house is perfect as a car in front of it is perfect. When you can see where the firefighters did the hard fight. Absolutely theres no rhyme or reason to a fire your house could be destroyed the house next door perfectly intact minus a couple maybe some smoke problems inside your house, the smell of smoke, other than that everything about your house is fine theres no rhyme or reason about that this morning guys were still sitting at about 24,400 homes are still threatened with the fire burning but they do expect great conditions once again to take to the sky. Do all those water drops and theyve been averaging about 250,000 gallons of water every day. I will treat out new information at 6 oclock they will have a News Conference and hopefully the containment numbers will go up. Well try to find out the very latest on when people the evacuees will return. I do know in areas like bonnie dune its still one of the worst areas as far as the fire. The agency says people without symptoms who also have not been in close contact with someone whos been affected. Dont need to take a test now and many Health Experts are shocked by this new recommendation, including santa clara countys Health Officer doctor sara cody. I first heard about this change in guidelines. I actually didnt believe it for it seemed entirely bizarre in that it under pets are very basic tenants of how we control an Infectious Disease. Testing and having individuals know their status is foundational to our ability to control an Infectious Disease and certainly our ability to control covid. Well lets get a check of the forecast here at 5. 19 find out from john what we can expect today as were still im still enjoy cooler weather and cleaner air but hes got different, i dont know what to expect in the afternoon it was great and i open all the windows and then before i knew it was smoking and its so funny because other north bay viewers of the messaging me this morning being like it was so nice yesterday and now youre waking up in the north bay and its just awful up there. The air quality a marine and sonoma counties is the worst across the bay area right now. And that shows you just one shift in wind direction relaxing of winds means that smoke can settle in different places across the bay, so by no means are we in the clear just because weve had a few hours of good air quality from time to time you just got to enjoy those good moments when we get them and prepare for the not so good moments because we still do have plenty of smoke being put up by these wildfires. You look outside at the east bay right now berkeley here showing some very foggy conditions embedded in that fog is ample smoke up in marine in Sonoma County so do be mindful of that as youre venturing outside this morning, a High Pressure ridge since to our east and we are in the midst of a nice little cool down thanks to this dip in the jet stream. Tomorrow high builds back in and that means temperatures are really going to start to soar. Were also going to have a less marine layer pushing further inland. So that means less marine influence not as much of a sea breeze temperatures do have that opportunity to warm up even further were still enjoying a sea breeze this morning thats pushing some nice cool air all the way to our inland valleys. You really going to feel that impact into the afternoon as daytime highs later on. Well be even cooler than yesterday for some areas 50s 60s for coastal spots thats a modest cool down from yesterday millbrae and burlingame in the 70s today with redwood city saying carlos in Mountain View in the upper 70s, south bay temperatures either upper 70s or low 80s, not all that bad still warm, but certainly better than has been free might union city and hayward in the 70s well 80s in the tri valley through conquered in walnut creek. Oakland at 70 today. Youre to 90s on the map today, not antioch but rather pittsburgh in vacaville at 9092 degrees. Santa rosa in sandra fell at 81 today now tomorrows temperatures warming up as i promised yet not just for inland areas either but also along the bay saturday we cool back down just a little bit before we warm right back on up into sunday and stay pretty warm into the middle of next week daria thanks a lot john at 5. 21 and still ahead on this thursday morning coming up next to men are recovering from severe burns that they got trying to save. How do you bounce back . You dont, you bounce forward, with serious and reliable internet. Powered by the largest gig Speed Network in america. But is it secure . Sure its secure. And even if the power goes down, your connection doesnt. So how do i do this . You dont do this. We do this, together. Bounce forward, with comcast business. Were back at 5. 24 the largest wildfire that were monitoring is the su lightning complex fire burning in alameda contra costa and santa clara counties. Now so far its been the least destructive when it comes to property. But this fire has burned over 367,000 acres only 30 contained 20 structures have been destroyed so far 6 have been damaged, however more than 20,000 are still threatened. 5 people in total have been injured in these fires and in the east bay, 2 of those victims are recovering from being burned they were attempting to save. Theyre 88 acre property in livermore from fire now james shultz and tom shelton have significant burns. All over their bodies. The 2 men spent days setting up sprinklers to try to protect their homes as the su fire inched closer and closer to them. But as james and tom jumped into their cars to head down the mountain last wednesday. The flames caught up to them toms window was down as he was driving in his beard actually caught fire. He couldnt get out of the car because his door was jammed shut. James who was just behind him jumped out of his car to try and save tom but he got caught in the fire as well tom was eventually able to drag jamess body to a water tank. And the sprinkler was coming out the top and they had to water down below there basically probably had on them and as the fire was passing over him. They knew what they were in store for they were never there to fight a fire they were only there to just make sure staff was going on and then when the point when they need to go they were going to go. Yeah so the 2 men obviously have a long road of recovery ahead, was burned over 35 of his body james burned 75 of his and again another reminder why firefighters are urging people if youre in an evacuation zone dont stay behind to try to protect the property. And were learning more about one of the 5 people who died in the lnu complex fire 64 yearold Solano County resident, leon james bone was found in his home on English Hills road. He used to live on the property with his parents who has since passed away. His family says that he was almost completely blind and he had no way of getting the word about the fire. He had no running water. No electricity, no telephone. And he had no way of being alerted. So were just assuming that he probably was so overcome by smoke and this guy there on the property in the bed. And he says assuming because family members have been allowed to get actually get to the property because of the extreme heat and thats also reason why it took First Responders a couple of days to go in and actually find his body in the home. James property was not the only one that was burned down in that neighborhood, several structures along that road were also destroyed. 5. 27 well take a quick break but still ahead. The latest from hurricane laura as it continues to slam. Louisiana this morning after making landfall while a lot of folks were sleeping when a details on valspar signature holds up to common stains and cleans up easy. Discover whats possible at lowes. A Police Shooting in kenosha west constant fuels of protests here in oakland at least several businesses vandalized overnight. Well have that report coming up next. People in napa county are finally able to see if their home is Still Standing from the lnu lightning complex all as firefighters continue to try and gain containment in life the details coming and overnight to a category 4 storm laura made landfall. On the Southern Coast of louisiana. Ive got your updates on those impacts in the south. All right and lets get to the breaking news here at the half hour mark we want to begin with the east bay where protests broke out over Police Brutality and the Police Shooting of jacob blake in kenosha wisconsin. Kron fours reyna harvey is live in oakland with the details rana tell us about what the demonstrators dead last night. And so a lot of that frustration and anger you saw like you mentioned came after that Police Shooting in kenosha wisconsin of jacob lane. Were going to show you what happened in here in oakland overnight look at your screen you can see here this is downtown right near the whole foods you can see windows smashed near this is not the only business that was vandalized overnight police are saying that fires were said dozens the windows are broken and multiple businesses were also vandalized. Police are saying no officers were injured during the protest and that several arrest or may for now reporting here in Oakland Reyna harvey kron 4 news. Thanks a lot of rain a all right and we also want to update you on a breaking story this morning that powerful hurricane thats hammering the gulf coast at this very moment look at this video look at the wind and the rain coming down. This is some of the imagery coming as hurricane alora continues to lash louisiana in fact were following it from various angles, not only the video coming from the scene but we also john trouble in the Weather Center taking a look at it with his tools the radar and its a its still pretty impressive looking storm john absolutely very well formed and it was gaining strength all the way to making landfall last night at 01 00am when it eventually did. In the very southern part of louisiana Cameron Parish down there not a super populated area and thats not a whole lot of seawall defenses from storm surge and that was the big concern here just how high the storm surge was going to be there very low lying areas along the coastline and anticipating storm surge all the way up to i 10 which is as much as 30 miles away from the coastline. Were still looking at those advisories right along the coast. This morning. The storm has weakened to a category 2 system are some of those areas right along the coastline are still seeing winds anywhere from 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour and thats pretty far away from the center of the system that is now working its way inland as it does so we now have the potential of some very strong winds as well as heavy rain and possibility of even tornadic activity in the northeastern part of louisiana, the storms gradually going to continue to weaken, but still packs a punch as it works its way into the midwest with some very heavy rains and strong winds through arkansas eventually up towards missouri as well over the coming days, so if you have travel plans out this direction do expect disruptions to those plants here locally weve got some haze. Weve got some fog thats the way were starting this morning Napa Santa Rosa visibility down below a mile as we are seeing smoke smoke and fog both settling into the north bay this morning that means north bay air quality is our worst especially for marine and sonoma counties as you do venture outside if you have respiratory conditions that something you want to take note of unhealthy spots in the east bay and south bay as well, cooler conditions that at the same time yesterday 50s and 60s for current temperatures. Do put a jacket on as youre getting outside a cool wind as well from the coast is pushing in that just makes it feel even more brisk 60s for your highs in San Francisco while san jose and many other spots back into the 80s james all right john thank you. Now lets continue our Team Coverage of the wildfires that are burning throughout the bay area, the lnu complex fire burning in the north bay and heres a map showing. The other big fire in the complex is the wall ridge fire in Sonoma County overnight crews took advantage of the cooler temperature but still containment on this complex remains at 33 . The Evacuation Orders are still in place when reporting where im reporting right now near Lake Berryessa in napa county off of highway one 28 which still has roadblocks and highway one 21 as well, however, people who live in this area could finally see if the fire had touched their homes yesterday. They just had to come to the road closure at can highway one 21. To exchange their id to be exported to their properties we caught up with one of the evacuees who got to come in for the first time. Heartbreaking for a lot of people. A life way to go. With american community. I talked with a woman off camera yesterday. She has a home in Lake Berryessa she moved here from San Francisco and she heard her home was ok because you told me of some of the people who live in this area they stayed back to help try and fight and defend. The defend their homes from the fire.
