In a right way to set the bar really high so proud of you. And more scientists kreider here in the light. James shultz and tom shelton are lucky to be alive. Both men have significant burns all over their bodies and are in the hospital after attempting to save their 88 acre property livermore last week from catching on fire the 2 men spent days setting up sprinklers to try to protect their homes as the scu fire inched closer in closer to them toms brother steven explains. They knew what they were in store for they were never there to fight a fire they were only there to just make sure stuff was going on and then when the point when they need to go they were going to go but as james and tom jumped in their cars to head down the mountain last wednesday, the flames caught up to them. Toms window was down as he was driving in his beard caught on fire. This is what his car looks like today am here to our entire world and i was driving through smoke. And all senate crashed into a lot stephen said his brother couldnt get out of the car his store was jam shot james who was just behind him jumped out of his car to try to save time but got caught on fire tom who was also on fire was able to open up his passenger side door. And drag jamess body to a water tank and the sprinkler was coming out the top and they have the water down below there. Basically probably had on them and as the fire was passing over him. Now bloodied burned in battered the 2 men jumped in the only car left on the property and got themselves to safety tom burned 35 of his body james burns, 75 of his the 2 men have a long road ahead of them as they begin to recover. In Alameda County, michelle kingston kron 4 news. And the north bay, the lnu lightning complex is burning across the noma napa solano lake and yolo counties kron fours noelle bellow joins us now from Sonoma County where cal fire said today is optimistic about efforts by the fire crews to contain the lnu noel. Thats right pam im here in Sonoma County where the walbridge fire has been burning for over a week now still smoke billowing on the ridge behind me im standing on a property on mill creek road which is one of the roads that folks still can not to return to and its because fire crews say theyre still active flames. Deep down this road want to show you some video of what it was looking like earlier today officials saying that the walbridge fire really is just a very large fire with what they call fingers of flames stretching in a lot of different directions. Its also a lot of different topography out here different types of fuel for the fire in every different direction which is kind of whats making it so difficult. They are working though to shore up the containment lines all around it. The same areas that have been an issue continue to be where crews are focusing their efforts including here where i am on mill creek. I did stop and speak with the family in this area who have been allowing fire crews use their property as a place to recharge. And got out of here pretty quickly on tuesday night when that was a morning on our side of the road but mandatory on the other side. And then we just started coming up for the day on starting saturday because and when we arrive saturday, there were 16 local engines sitting on our property resting and we realized how appreciative. They were of all of the a gator in ice and toiletries and food that we brought in and so we just started doing it every day. We bring of hot coffee in the morning and the afternoon and now weve got how fire here and engines from all over the state and other states as well. Now the National Guard has actually come to help out here with the lnu a fire theres going to be about 12 National Guard crews out this way dealing with the walbridge officials are optimistic though as you said pam, they are hoping that the weather continues to work with them over the next couple of days so that they can lift more Evacuation Orders because right now there are still more than 5,000 people in Sonoma County under an Evacuation Order for now live in Sonoma County noelle bellow kron 4 news. Thank you while we want to show you a map that just said came online within the last couple of hours and you can actually go to this map yourself. We have a link for it on our website kron 4 dot com. And you can get right down to specific streets and this specific structures. So you can see from the lnu complex fire that no i was just talking about well take you down to Lake Berryessa area and you see individual homes and where they stand in terms the houses that are marked in red have been destroyed those that are marked in black and you can see this whole neighborhood here in Spanish Flats at the south end of Lake Berryessa has then hit hard by this we see one house that survived on skates but all the other ones have been destroyed and then theres this Mobile Home Park just north. Where theres more than 3 dozen mobile homes that have been destroyed and only 3 that week out here that survived and then there are other homes that are marked green as being affected by the fire but not destroyed and then this other area we want to show you where theres a lot of damage this is off of headlines. Drive area the south into the lake. The black houses are not damage. The red houses have been destroyed by the fire you can see there are several dozen here. And you can zoom out on this map and go to other parts of the lnu complex fire because its more than one fire these are lightning fires and you see northwest of santa rosa. Many homes saved just a handful were destroyed in the north of jenner on the coast a couple of homes destroyed there so very useful again go to kron 4 dot com to find this map we try to find a map like this for the other fires but so far none of them are posted as soon as they are posted if they are we will put them on kron 4 dot com. Well lets take a live look outside now looking over at sfo. Its nice to see that cooling fall kind of in the background of the control tower there. Is good news for firefighters or us whats going on out there yeah that has really helped out the marine layer that fog. Well weve come to the north around the bay area very well it deep in a move further on shore that brought a lot more moisture in the atmosphere and slowed the fires down still the winds have been kicking up this afternoon. Weve had some gusts over 30 Miles Per Hour you get that seabreeze going get any kind of win like that in and around these fires kind of dangerous out there. And there continue to see some breezy conditions into the north bay as those wind whipping to 14 Miles Per Hour so but should begin to calm down as we head through the night tonight, those winds will be dropping off becoming fairly calm by tomorrow morning thats kind of when that smoke begins to settle in all around the valleys around the rest the bay area. As we look toward a San Mateo County also in the Santa Cruz County we continue to see the fire burning there the winds were out of a northwesterly direction theyre close to the coastline. Theyve actually have deep enough marine lair that theyve seen some drizzle in some of these areas that has some great news and it looks like tonight, the humidity once again is going to surge maybe as high as almost 96. Almost 97 some of the places that are seeing the fires guys back to you. Our sports director jason dumas says here with more jason. And ken pam, a whole lot is going on, but we have to start in the beginning 4 years ago today, Colin Kaepernick sat on the bench for the National Anthem during a preseason game against the packers. It was the very start of his peaceful protests against Police Brutality and systemic racism. And today for the first time in nba history. A team has gone on strike and refuse to play a playoff game. And this is cause a domino effect in the sports world that now includes the San Francisco giants. The giants decided after having a meeting on the field to not play tonights game versus the dodgers. The team came out the stretch that left a field shortly after kron 4 news was the first to report this the giants officially made the announcement about 30 minutes before the game. The Milwaukee Brewers were the First Major League team to decide to boycott their game tonight. The as are playing in texas against the rangers right now. And like i said the bucks started this whole domino effect they are supposed to take on the Orlando Magic in game 5 of their openinground playoff series. But the bucks refused to come out of the locker room. The bucs management and front office was not aware that the players had planned on sitting out and neither did their opponents the Orlando Magic. After this all transpired the nba stepped in and postpone the rest of the evenings playoff games which included the Oklahoma City thunder taking on the Houston Rockets and the portland trail blazers taking on the los angeles lakers. The bucks players eventually emerge from the locker room. I read a statement as a teen. S. Plus structures, burns neighborhoods unrecognizable we continue to follow the historic wildfires burning across and around the bay area, including the czu lightning complex fires which are burning in the mountains in santa cruz and san mateo counties more than 80,000 acres have burned so far almost 600 structures have been destroyed. Our Team Coverage continues now with a look at the destruction left behind. And there is one neighborhood particularly hit hard in Santa Cruz County thats boulder a creek and a fallen leaf drive area that they that street is virtually wiped out we want to show you video. This neighborhood is right off of to 36 the fire tore through many homes on that street. Nothing is really an wreck recognizable and you just see twisted metal and cars that were still parked on the driveways just devastation everywhere, and we do want us tell you this is just some of the hundreds of homes that have been destroyed in Santa Cruz County alone in the czu august lightning complex fire. We did i heres a resident who decided to stay behind and help firefighters. Chaos its you know there was fire coming in so. We started doing things to keep the fire from being here was struck that garden hose onto the roof so that could put out spot fires a garden hose up on the roof of that building over there. And the fire appears to be moving west so that neighborhood just completely devastated now when you drive down the road on to 36. The Boulder Creek golf course of pierces still be standing the grass. Still green. We also want to say sheriffs deputies in santa cruz. They also want to warn people not to come back to the evacuated areas, its still very dangerous. In fact they had to save someone. A man who was stranded in the mountains for 2 days. So he was found thankfully, but he was also cited for. Were going back to the evacuation areas. They are looking into a 3 missing persons cases and as far as when can people go home here in scott valley where i am it could be a day or week. But as you get. Well if you as you go west towards the mountain towns of felton then lowman all the way north up to Boulder Creek and that could take a week 2 weeks just because they have to clean up the debris. A lot of power lines are down on the side of the roads. So they really want to clear that up and theres also some hot spots that are still burning out. But those fires are contained life in Scotts Valley gayle ong kron 4 news gayle. Thank you for that report tonight we are also monitoring the evacuations triggered by these 3 complex fires in the bay area kron fours also the money and joins us now live in the newsroom to walk us through the maps of those areas that are affected l a. Ken and pam i want to turn your attention now to the north they were going to be looking at the lnu complex fires and where exactly the Evacuation Orders are in place at this hour. And so fortunately in the last few days it looks like there has been a lot of headway and thats why you see way more green on your screen because that means that people can return home and these areas are now open for example in geyserville and all along the coast here and so the evacuation matt that is mandatory at this time is really between a dry creek road over here and west of that and then east of the kings ridge road and then all the way down you see the Russian River here so the north part of the Russian River and the south park can return home, its really the north part that is the biggest concern including what looks to be the mountainous regions in the center here all the way up extending into lake sonoma and the warning for this evacuation at this time is in the Pritchett Peaks extending just below. Redwood mountain so it looks like a a lot of progress has been made in the surrounding areas, but many people still cannot return home and we have seen of devastation in this region, especially in austin creek state park as well moving now over to the Lake Berryessa side of lots of Evacuation Orders here thats in the blue as well as the red the red is the fire zone and the blue is a mandatory Evacuation Order just decide that so most of the damage we have seen around lake area said to the south of it as well as to the west of the lake and thats why you see all thats still in place pope valley not doing so well how mountain also under that mandatory evacuation tonight and the warning has been around the lake hennessy side the things that has been in place really for the last few days has pretty much remained the same and then it extends over into the Solano County region we have seen the back of mountains. Still under that mandatory Evacuation Order as well and at this map is also taking a look at the wind direction and the speed so thankfully that has lessened it looks to be more close to 4 Miles Per Hour in certain areas and the wind direction is headed northeast and believe and the mandatory evacuations have been north of vacaville and to the west of vacaville, mostly west of interstate 80 and just above lets see this paradise valley, golf course which is in the safe zone, but its really all around it that youre seeing to the north side that there is a mandatory evacuation in place im going to be going over the s e u and the czu lightning complex fires and those Evacuation Orders later on in this newscast. Coming up help has arrived hundreds of members of the california National Guard ready to take on wildfires burning in the bay area the help theyre offering to cal fire straight ahead, plus well talk live with a cal fire representative our top story tonight cal fires progress fighting the wildfires across the bay area here are the latest containment numbers for the 3 lightning complex fires. The lnu lightning complex fires in the north bay are now 33 contained. The scu lightning complex fires burning in the east bay and south bay are now 30 contained and the czu august lightning complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties, or 21 contained. Almost 300 members of the California ArmyNational Guard arrived in the north bay to aid in the lnu complex fire fight there. Yeah, the soldiers arrived at the Cal Fire Base Camp at the Sonoma County fairgrounds in santa rosa, this afternoon and white pick up some military vehicles, many of these soldiers have actually fought fires before our but all have spent the last few days training with cal fire. Officials say they will be working as hand crews, cutting containment lines they are due to hit the fire lines tomorrow and for the latest information on all of these wildfires we welcome and cal fires assistant Deputy Director daniel berlanti daniel thanks for joining weather is improving the containment lines are growing at more people heading to the fire lines if were not turning the corner can you at least see the corner ahead. Yeah, i know absolutely we are making great progress our firefighters continue to work tirelessly over the last several days and several nights and i think their hard work. Its finally paying off its containment numbers grow now while were making Good Progress on a number of fronts we still have active fire and not by clear to those residents living in yolo county calusa county up on the lnu lightning where we had an additional just near the town of rumney so still a lot of fire to a lot of potential but definitely making real progress. So where most homes and structures threatened tonight i see youve assigned the National Guard. Troops to the l a new fires at the one youre most concerned about. Well we have actually been used the National Guard on a number of fires throughout the week the National Guard will be spread in a number of places where we really are or use net influx of National Guard support to help our doctor these fires again in the lnu complex the Tree Lighting complex is just 3 nearly 2 dozen major wildfires and so we have to prioritize our resources our helicopters are air tankers are fire engines were constantly moving them around a based on where that threat and where theyre needed. Yeah, i want to ask you about that because the scu fire in santa clara and alameda counties has burned 367,000 acres its the biggest fire in terms of territory. His home he destroyed about 20 structures while the l a new fire fire. Fires rather plural is a little bit last of 360,000 acres but more than a 1000 structures have been destroyed so. Obviously the biggest protection effort would be protecting lives but after that its property isnt it. Yeah, absolutely Life Property and then our natural resources, our 3 priority in that order. The lnu lightning complex of fires have been burning them much closer to Residential Community at Large Population areas where fortunately, the f you like the complex has been burning in a much more rural. Portion outside of the east bay so you know that played a major factor into so even though more acres are being bernie a few lightning complex the just the sheer location of the yelling you lie the complex near so Many Community in one of the reasons why it had been so destructive already and why if you take a lot of resources to ensure that were protecting the homes that still remain friend in that area. Is more manpower heading toward california. Yeah were still working with a number of other states to try to bring resources into california. Were trying to make sure in with many of our local Fire Department partners swapping out crews bringing in Additional Support not activation of the national all of that influx helping out into your containment efforts but also to give the firefighters who had been on the front line now day in and day out a little bit of a break, you know many of these firefighters have been battling fires really for weeks several fires that we had out of Southern California prior to. This lightning siege. I you know has kept firefighters busy so many of our fiber fighters are definitely looking for a little bit of rest and recovery. I want to ask you about the evacuation area. So youre talking about the l a new Fire Evacuation areas just outside the city limits of some significant sized populations vacaville. Cloverdale healdsburg those pretty close to saying only in a and napa and then you go down to the scu fire on the south end of livermore just east of milpitas in fremont is there any concern that these fires if we get a shift in the weather, the winds, the temperatures that could enter any of those cities. And the wind conditions are something were constantly monitoring whether such an important factor in not only right now its ability to allow us to a better environment to work in and to make progress but if the winds do pick up if it temperatures to that definitely has the potential to allow these fires to grow so even though we know we are on the road towards making real Good Progress and had several days in a row now weve weve had some good we were cautiously optimistic because look we need to constantly monitor about that weather because you know some the gunfight change could definitely affect things. Some people in the fire zones have been allowed to go back to their homes. Some have not what is your advice tonight what word you want to say to residents tonight. You know there are many people who have been out of her home now for a week and a half and we know what they want to get back in and we want to get them back in and i can tell you that our men and women are working very very hard right now in the middle of the night or keen slow down this fire build those containment lines make it safe for people to get back home. Daniel berlant from cal fire. Thank you so much for your time no i think im speaking for a lot of people around the bay area in the state of california want to thank you for yes, you and your colleagues for your tremendous efforts, we know its an uphill battle given the situation. You guys have done a remarkable job. Thank you very much much gratitude. Daniel. And of course we are continuing to take a closer look at the evacuation zones near these complex fires are for solace of money and again in the newsroom shows where people can return home tonight l a. Ken and pam lets now take a look to the south and east of us at the scu lightning complex fire that is the largest one burning in the bay area right now across several counties but in the bay area and has triggered evacuation warnings in Alameda County right via Regional Park thats just below livermore city limits it was at one forcing evacuation of a lonely college but that has since turned green in the last 2 days so that is in the safe zone at this time, but just east of milpitas you do see here around Calaveras Creek and the Calaveras Reservoir that is all in the yellow so that is subject to possibly having those mandatory evacuations extended into that area but at this time it is just a warning in the Santa Clara County portion. This map and so it is all along the east side of El Camino Real and extends down toward Anderson Lake as well as coyote lake and at one point we did see a Mount Hamilton totally surrounded by this red zone which is a mandatory evacuation zone. In the Santa Clara County portion of things all in this mountainous region taking a look closer to the coast this easy lightning complex fire has triggered. So many evacuations that are the only one we have seen lifted today was down south in that you see santa cruz that campus can now return back to their regular operations. But it is really along the coast by wilder beach all the way up to san gregorio which is the most Northern Point of this mandatory evacuation zone, and it cuts across along the creek there. And over and urtula 100 creek open space and then basically bordered by the santa clara and santa cruz borderline so it extends all the way from the coast and then inland to that county line so everything you see here highlighted in red then lawman we have had our reporters checking in on some of those areas today to see what is still been standing. But unfortunately we have seen some damage there as well due to the czu lightning complex fires. All this information posted on our website kron 4 dot com back to you.
