And the czu august lightning complex fires on the peninsula and into Santa Cruz County or 8 contained. Thanks for joining us tonight, im ken wayne and i pale more fire crews and residents are anxious about the high winds, the thunderstorms and the lightning expected tonight and into the start of the workweek in fact all of us across the bay area are concerned more than 14,000 firefighters are battling more than 2 dozen major fires across the state. Tonight, another death to report the body of a 70 yearold man has been discovered in Santa Cruz County. We have Team Coverage on all 3 major complex fires tonight kron fours noelle bellow gayle ong and dan thorn our live with the latest on the fires and the damage and our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow is in our Weather Center tracking the weather conditions tonight, lets go to the biggest fire noelle bellow has the latest on the firefighting efforts in Sonoma County noel. Thats right you guys mentioned that the l and the u of fire is at 21 contained, but cal fire says they are definitely not out of the woods just yet they say fire growth is expected to continue as they battle this fire because the fire kind of keeps going and moving in Different Directions which is making it a little difficult for crews out here to fully get a handle on this fire. Im here at the Cal Fire Sonoma Air Attack based at the Sonoma County airport the aircrafts here grounded around 7 oclock this evening. They wont get back up until some time tomorrow of course they are watching closely on that potential for some dry lightning. We do not have any rain here in Sonoma County just yet. But there is a bit of wind that i know must be Even Stronger up where they are actually battling the fire line now i do want to show you some video. Weve got a little bit earlier showing one of the choppers up in healdsburg which is just north of where i found a water supply dipped the chopper into you know the about water so that it could go ahead and continue to try and fight this fire from the air i spoke with a cal fire. And felt cal fire crew member earlier today who said one of their aircraft actually got fogged in earlier and they had to kind of go all the way up to ukiah to got to get into a safer area to try and fix what was going on with the aircraft we do know that aircraft crews are stretched thin with all of these fires across the bay area and i was at the Evacuation Center in santa rosa a little bit earlier today spoke with several different people who had to flee their homes and are just hoping to to have some place to come home to. I stayed a couple extra days i go to my truck with all my tools and everything and waited a little bit and then. Its are coming over the house kind of so and to go you know, i feel really bad for the people that have lost homes and you know were going to go back in their place is going to be there so it is hard enough like this, but if you go is all your stuff in your house. The environment right now. And my you know its. And needs weve taken care of better. Crews are trying to take care of that fire line earlier the cal fire did kind of ease up on some of the Evacuation Orders in this area where the walbridge fire is burning. But a lot of folks that i spoke to who said they could potentially go back to their homes they decide theyre deciding to wait it out because again with this potential for dry lightning tonight. Theyre theyre just not sure what may happen over the next couple of days for now live in Sonoma County noelle bellow kron 4 news while thank you and speaking of evacuations of thousands of people in the north bay have been ordered to leave their homes. Heres evacuation map for Sonoma County and the surrounding area, the red area in the center. Take a look at this video thats come in from Scotts Valley in the Santa Cruz Mountains at the cal fire base camp. Firefighters there are battling the sea as is im sorry the czu fire you can see rain was falling got from earlier today in the Santa Cruz Mountains leaving the roads slick and a lot of people nervous and whether or not more lightning is on the way chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow joins us now from the Weather Center large give us a sense of the conditions right now in the Santa Cruz County area where the czu lightning fire complex is. Yeah were looking pretty good right now even for the wind that point love scene just the rain if we can only the rain. That would be fantastic and for some theres some lightning strikes in the forecast for you see the winds here a boy not much at all in fact getting called at some point almost coming out of an easterly direction so kind of swirling around weve got low pressure off the coastline. So that factor into that low start to creep up a little bit closer and that low. Well, its bringing some lightning and weve seen some of that. Parts of the easters you can hear just east of san jose a couple lightning strikes now in the scu complex area and thats what were worried about these thunderstorms not that theyre only going to possibly cause more fires but you get such strong downdraft underneath some of these storms so even though they may have containment around some of these fires you can strong down drafts of maybe 60 Miles Per Hour that can blow right through some of those containment line guys that were very live forecast back to you all right lauren thank you very much take a look at this video from Big Basin Redwoods State Park in Santa Cruz Mountains, this is a very special place to so many of us. This video was shot yesterday and it shows the damage caused by the czu lightning complex fire. The state park. The oldest state park in california. The headquarters charred mostly destroyed. Were told large have been seeing down across some of the roads and some redwoods were seen from the insides of the trees vehicles state power property and accessible roads all damaged or destroyed by this fire and we have also learned one person has died and the czu fire the 70 yearold victim was found in whats called the last a chance area in Santa Cruz County. The name has not been released pending notification of the family kron fours gayle ong has been covering developments a Santa Cruz County says last week she has the latest tonight. Gala you seen any rain or lig tning strikes where you are. And can we did see some rain around 6 oclock but it stop quickly and i can tell you it has not been windy. We want to show you video of one neighborhood where the fire came were really close said this is in Boulder Creek and this is riverdale boulevard and hillsdale avenue. These are homes that are in the middle of a forest on highway 9 off of right off right often in Boulder Creek. What theyre doing here of this fire is actually burning on the hillside and it made its way down the slope. So firefighters were able to contain the fire in that area. Allentowns in Santa Cruz County now they have a lot of windy road. So i was able to drive through and that neighborhood and you can it was a single lane road. So thats the type of to rain the fia firefighters have to get you to fight these fires. When they found that 70 yearold man and in the last road Officials Say they have to use a helicopter because the area was impossible. Mountain chief meteorologis Lawrence Karnow is here in north last thing we want to see some high winds but yeah, its in the forecast. Yeah, certainly is not widespread not across the entire bay area the same time weve got these thunderstorms coming through sir going to see these small events rolling through the bay area thats where were seen right now were starting to see a couple lightning strikes begin to pop up so red flag warnings have been posted across the entire bay area from now all the way until tomorrow afternoon expecting the lightning activity continue on and off through that period of fact. Were watching around the fire zone is this what were worried about move seen some lightning strikes even pop up in around this fire tonight but were worried about the downdraft by these thunderstorms that hits the ground all of us it has nowhere to go it spreads out and of course can a push right through some of those fire lines in her so firefighters going to be watching that challenge overnight tonight and throughout the day tomorrow kind of sitting around this fire. Weve had a fairly calm winds this evening, although it was long fairly strong to 20 Miles Per Hour in the afternoon, those winds have calmed down a bit but certainly is a thunderstorm rolls over there that could change everything and then back out along the coastline, weve got a warmer fire there was in those winds popping up to 40 Miles Per Hour right now no thunderstorms in their neighborhood. But overnight tonight certainly thats a possibility. And coming up authorities across the bay area cracking down on looters during these devastating wildfires, we had the Santa Cruz County where Officials Say they will prosecute looters to the fullest extent of the law. Kron fours gayle ong continues our Team Coverage tonight from Scotts Valley in Santa Cruz County jail youve been covering that area now for the last what since midweek last week are you noticing anything different are the conditions more under control or not. And can today was the best of firefighting weather firefighters had and i noticed that and thats what i was told it was clear. Low wind. But that of course may change through the night we do want to also say that victim was a 70 yearold man and his identity is not being released at this time they have to notify family. He was apparently a missing persons case and its also worth noting sheriffs deputies in santa cruz are also looking into 3 other missing persons cases. This fire is burning in dense forest. Actually got video of firefighters trying to save homes and this is in the neighborhood of Boulder Creek. Firefighters are actually back burning near a this is right by the Boulder Creek community church. Firefighters are creating fire lines to protect this home. Right in the middle of the forest, the concern is the trees. I a drive around the neighborhood around the fire lines then a lot of heavy timber in undergrowth and theres some places that they just white the undergrowth out and a lot of the concern is those trees that they burn on the base of the trees. They cannot tip over and of course the embers will spread and that is whats been causing house fires about a 160 buildings were destroyed. Many of them in Santa Cruz County. Back here live in Scotts Valley, the conditions tonight. It has not been windy and so were hoping it stays that way but of course the firefighters are stationed throughout the field, im ready to put out any fires caused by lightning. So what they have been keeping an eye on the weather patterns them and im keeping an eye on where the winds have been shifting. Throughout the week. And containment is at 21 our live Team Coverage continues with kron fours noelle bellow shes live at the Sonoma County airport so noel earlier you mentioned that you notice the winds had shifted in the area where you are have you yet to experience any rain or seen any lightning strikes. I havent seen any lightning strikes but just before you guys came to me i did have a few raindrops here very little but they were noticeable they landed on my phone and on my face so there is a little bit of rain coming down here again, im in Sonoma County im at the Sonoma County airport technically at the Cal Fire Sonoma Air Attack base now we learned earlier today that the air resources are pretty thin up here because of just how many fires are there trying to get a handle on and trying to attack them from the air i do have some video from earlier in healdsburg showing a chopper found a bit of a water source there to try and dip into to then go ahead and continue fighting this l and you lightning complex fire from above. Theyre in healdsburg its the walbridge fire thats burning i can actually from where im standing see a bit of an orange glow ahead of me and which tells me that this fire is still definitely burning tonight the walbridge fire about 5 contained every once in a while as the wind shifts out here you can smell a little bit more of that smoke i was at the Evacuation Center in santa rosa earlier and today there was an announcement made by cal fire that folks who had evacuated from certain areas of that while bridge fire could go back to their homes at their own risk but i spoke with one woman who says she is not prepared to do that just yet. Just city declarations have been lifted not know im not real not super confident about you know going back on it just in light of life. Win win. You know i i know what the win. And stop and and students kind of ride it out its going to gauge it. You know because originally i think they said through tuesday. Yeah that time frame is still there that woman actually lost everything in the tubbs fire a few years back so shes not really taking any chances on going back until they give a for sure all clear again its that dry lightning that crews are definitely looking out for and watching closely tonight has the potential for more fires in this area could happen if dry lightning does strike the air crews. Well likely and hopefully be able to get up again tomorrow sometime in the morning to continue to try and fight this fire from above for now in Sonoma County noelle bellow kron 4 news. Thanks noelle for that many of us are shocked by this next story and cal fire is calling is sickening its about a crime against one of their own a thief broke into a fire commanders Department Vehicle stole his wallet. And then cleaned out his bank account kron fours Justine Waldman has the details on this story for us tonight live from our newsroom justine. Well this did happen to a santa cruz fire ground commander battling the czu lightning complex fires. His car was parked at the bonny doon fire station on empire grade in Santa Cruz County. And while this firefighter was out saving lives and homes trying to protect properties. Somebodys got inside of his Department Vehicle stole his wallet and then took everything out of his bank account purchases river made on at least one of that Firefighters Credit cards and cal fire made it really clear routing of any kind, especially against a firefighter is an acceptable. Its unfortunate sickening one of our our ground commanders in that area. While out taking care of business directing a firefighting crews. Somebody entered his vehicle his apartment vehicle and stole person vehicles include his wallet. And rain as they could tell so thats the extent that these people done again this is why we have asked. For people to evacuate the Sheriffs Department has done a fantastic job in trying to derail this but again. This is what we have as a its saddening its sickening were doing everything we can to try to help the community. Saddening and sickening as right also with this cal fire warning about fake gofundme accounts that are circulating to raise money for the firefighter, so if you see one of those theyre fake the count is not associated with cal fire or anyone connected to the department. The Santa Cruz CountySheriffs Department i talked to them today about this case they have detectives working on it, theyre actively looking for Surveillance Video or any other evidence that could lead to identifying the suspect and theyre also working closely with the bank to figure out exactly who used the firefighters information to take all the money live right now in the newsroom, im Justine Waldman kron 4 news. Us teen still ahead were going to get another check of whats happening at the scu complex fires involving Santa Clara Alameda our wildfire coverage continues in the east bay and south bay you can see on your screen where the as siu lightning complex fires are burning month. This is video from the scene from alameda contra costa santa clara and parts of san joaquin counties the siu combines fires have burned 343,000 acres with 10 containment to First Responders and 2 others hurt 12 structures destroyed more than 20,000 others threatened our live Team Coverage continues now kron fours dan thorn covering those fires hes live for us in morgan hill tonight, dan. What can and pam the danger right now is east of here thats in the communities of jackson oaks Holiday Lakes estates and also for homes that are along thomas grade, thousands of people had to flee their homes tonight because of Evacuation Orders the fire burning in areas near henry coe state park. We saw people that were racing up to their homes and also back from their homes filling up their cars with anything that they could get understandably they are on edge tonight. The Evacuation Order was issued because of a change in weather including the wind which could actually help this fire spread or maybe pick up some of those embers of the current fires that are happening right now and sending them into these communities where the roads are very narrow. Its sort of one way in and one way out hilly rural terrain for people to have to get through. At 5 oclock today, there was a hard closure of east dunn avenue which is where i am right now and thats east of the hill road. People have been turned away. Staying because theyre being told to stay away from their these communities because of any potential danger. A lot of evacuees really concerned as to whether or not when they return their home will still be there. Have won a dress routes. We want to make sure its quarterly kind of hectic. We are facing try to pack up all the pictures and stuff like that. Yeah weve got to weve got to get going up there. So as you just heard there are a lot of people sort of frantically trying to get up in into their communities. Picking up whatever they can get and then getting on out of here and needed to be done in an orderly fashion because as we mentioned some of these roads are really tied it sort of the one way in one way out situation so people needed to heed those warnings that have been happening over the last couple of days and now these are mandatory orders for people to get out of these areas for those that have evacuated theyre being told to go to a local high school that is and so high school there they will get information and resources and possibly even supplies and if they need some place to stay theres also information about where they can do that as well ken pam back to you. Thank you dan as we turn to the weather now we want to share a picture of the sunset tonight, this is from lafayette. Earlier this evening and its pretty dramatic. It looks like on the surface of mars and the red sky. As of course caused by the smoke from all of the wildfire near Lawrence Karnow is tracking the conditions large talk about air quality tonight. Yeah, boy thats a pretty ugly debris, thats up a certainly making for some beautiful sunrise and sunsets the air quality has improved a little bit this afternoon a little bit of a sea breeze enough to make things in the moderate categories in the San Francisco parts can still very bad unhealthy air quality get to conquer to get several mon Fremont Livermore very bad air quality in those areas and its going return again. Not only tomorrow but it looks for the least the next few days and maybe longer all depends on these fires and just how long they burn poorer and spare the air. Issued by the bay area air Quality Management pour in the north they pour also along the coast on healthy part of the east bay and also the south bay right want to show you this lightning now just beginning to pick up the strikes beginning to show up around the bay area. Theres one just off the coastline there near santa cruz, not what we want to see but here we go things getting a little more unstable as the core low is beginning to move a little bit closer to the bay area most lightning strikes so located just east of the bay area in toward the Central Valley, some of those storms some pretty good lightning strikes in those areas near modesto up towards stockton back in the bay area couple of scattered showers popping up in a few more lightning strikes just off the coastline. But now were entering a period where weve got an unstable air moving in overhead theyre going to be scattered going to be isolated. But certainly and he strikes the cause any more fires any strikes or look thunderstorm to come over on top of some of these areas are going to cause more problems that are in the fires already going so here we go as we take you through the night tonight possibly the thunderstorms moving at about 1130 into parts of concord along the peninsula you can see there in the San Francisco, maybe a thunderstorm there and then moving in the north and thats all sweeping up to the north that will continue throughout the night tonight. I think by early tomorrow morning things will finally begin sell down at least for a little while. Thank you lawrence. President trump started his administrations Coronavirus Briefing today by first addressing californias wildfire responding to the emergency President Trump issued a major disaster declaration to provide federal assistance. Before i discuss a very historic breakthrough in a fight against the. General myers id like to provide an update on the recent wildfires in california. And these storms in the gulf of mexico approved a major disaster declaration for california spoke to governor newsom. As they battled 2 of the worst wildfires in the history of this state. That continues. The federal government is already deployed over 26,001st responders. And personnel to battle the wildfires, were working very closely with the governor and very closely with a lot of great state representatives and local representatives. And well take care of the situation. Governor newsom said in a statement that the declaration will also help people in counties affected by the fires with crisis counseling housing and other social services that big news, the president referred to was about the fight against covid19 the fda just gave emergencyuse officer at authorization to something called convalescent plasma to treat coronavirus it is a treatment President Trump has been pushing even accusing the food and Drug Administration of stalling approval for political reasons britt conway has details. Today im pleased to make a truly historic announcement. The fda just issued emergency use authorization for a new treatment for covid19 great treatment known as convalescent plasma so what is it. Well convalescent means anyone recovering from a disease fda commissioner stephen hahn explains plasma so plasma is the liquid portion of the book.
