Now this comes as the state and the bay area continue to see a rise in coronavirus cases kron 4 Sarah Stinson live in Contra Costa County this morning. She has all the details sarah good morning. And theyre good morning marty i live here in Contra Costa County one of counties in the bay area that seeing a major surge in cases terrible time they cant believe were heading into the 4th of july weekend and were seeing a spike in cases when we were doing so well and now were seeing that resurgence. So officials are asking us to stay home and be safe. Why lets take a look at the increases that were seeing across the bay area in all of our take a look at your screen there are quite a lot of numbers but just to name a few Contra Costa County is seeing a 129 increase in cases in a 111 increase in deaths from may 31st until yesterday that the county saw a 207 increase in cases and a 33 increase in deaths and some of the lowest number of cases, but theyre really seeing a spike up there. They put all this data provided by each countys Health Department on our website kron 4 dot com for you to review you can head there and really get a good look at your county in the numbers there but the total numbers Alameda County is still doing the worst in terms of most cases but as i said as you can see on your screen napa county really doesnt have that many cases but their percentage of increase was the highest the Area Health Officials put out a joint statement urging people to stay home this Holiday Weekend traditionally we go see fireworks and we have barbecues we hang with friends and family this year 4th of july actually falls on a weekend i actually have it off im sure a lot of people feel the same way but now we cannot celebrate the way we would like to its getting to the point where Health Officials are now saying you you should only hang out with people you live with and avoid gatherings altogether if you are outside, make sure you have that mass make sure youre doing distancing even in Warren County know they were telling me earlier this week school get with your social bubble, but even then the cases have gotten so bad Health Officers saying if you can stay home. Stay home please a lot of people have been talking to saying that theres going to have the kids stay at home try make it fun for them obviously no fireworks happening, you know its its just going to be a really strange 4th of july, but officials are really counting on us to be good to follow rules and hopefully we will see an additional spike we can flatten his curve and get back to where we were where we are reopening. Well Health Experts are sounding the alarm as we head into the Holiday Weekend and the span of just one month, california has gone from optimistic too alarmed in the fight against covid19 doctor art rheingold with U C Berkeley School of Public Health says that getting a handle on the virus will take a joint effort and was no vaccine expected until at least next year. Doctor angle says the spike in sections was likely with some of the relaxing of restrictions and reopening of some businesses. This is pretty much what youd expect within reason injections virus on the right like the one that causes covid19 if no huge problem to deal with and we dont we have limited means. Well the latest numbers from the state now show the infection rate has gone up from just over 4 to now 6 and with no vaccine and without many people following Health Guidelines such as wearing a face mask. Well to the north right now Sonoma County is carefully monitoring the spread of covid19 after it reported 2 more deaths just yesterday county officials think that it could be placed on the governors watch list by next week. I mean if these shutdowns are counties where theyre going to go. Theyre going to come to us this reaction coming from a Restaurant Owner in sonoma plaza where visitors have been flocking to ever since businesses were allowed to reopen all of our. Hotels getting 200 capacity. Its a little difficult to not have this hesitation. Ordering a lot of food to get ready for something which used to be our biggest weekend of the year the july 4th holiday is near but county public Health Officials are seeing a jump in covid19 cases each day as of thursday to more coronavirus deaths were reported i think our covid increases at dont necessarily surprise me but nevertheless it saddens me greatly this may land the county on the governors watch list, which means the possibility of businesses closing again board of supervisors chair susan gorin had this message for businesses who may be impacted. Well for inmates at the San Mateo County jail are being treated for covid19 the Sheriffs Office says that they are among 8 inmates who tested positive for the virus. So far the other 4 have been placed into quarantine untreated. 3 Staff Members also tested positive they were treated and quarantine at their homes. To the east right now the contra costa chp is looking for the driver of this white van that reportedly hit and seriously injured a 7 yearold investigators say that the hit and run happened thursday afternoon on vine avenue between leslie in myrtle avenue and martinez. They say the child was just riding a scooter when he was hit. He was flown to oakland Childrens Hospital and is in stable condition. If you have any information about this incident youre asked to call police. Also in these bay a deadly crash had traffic crawling for hours on highway 4 happened about 12 30 yesterday in the eastbound lane just west of Discovery Bay boulevard in Discovery Bay. Witnesses told investigators the 2006 pontiac sedan was going about a 100 miles an hour. When the driver lost control and veered across all westbound lanes then went into the eastbound lanes and crashed head on with a jeep. The driver of the pontiac died at the scene the driver of the jeep suffered minor injuries. The chp still looking into whether the driver of the pontiac was impaired by alcohol or drugs. Now to a big story that were following for you this morning, San Francisco has joined the long list of bay area cities, closing down beach parking lots during the 4th of july Holiday Weekend lets check in with kron fours reyna harvey who is live in San Francisco with more the morning robin emmott ocean beach and you know what its so windy i dont know why people want to come down, but a lot of people are going to come down and enjoy that and get out on the water but that is exactly why the city is taking steps to close down these parking lot you can see behind me theyve already closed off this intersection here to try to deter people from coming down but there will be closing those parking lot put together a list in case you are deciding to visit any of these beaches out here in the city and you wanted to know which ones are going to be close and which ones were not so again take a look at your screen you can see are starting with here also they have a 4 point crissy field lands in a marina green Golden Gate Bridge all these beaches. Theyre going to be closing down their party lots now again the reason behind this decision may have seen an uptick in cases they have also seen a surge in hospitalizations now the mayor also encouraging people to stay home and to not come out and to social distance into all of those steps to keep themselves safe, ive been talking to some people that are already out here this morning and heres what they had to say about those closures. Well, Half Moon Bay is closing its beaches through sunday, the closures come after Governor Newsom ordered parking lots at all state beaches. Too close for the Holiday WeekendHalf Moon Bays mayors actively discouraging visitors to the city. Dont do it. He announced a stretch of popular coastal trail between seymour bridge and kelly avenue thats going to be shut down as well for the next 3 days. Here in the bay area there are now over 29,000 covid19 cases and over 590 deaths. Were seeing the most cases in the east bay in Alameda County with over 5700 infections. But the virus has been deadliest in Santa Clara County which has 100 56 deaths and we have a full breakdown of the cases by county and by city online at kron 4 dot com. As more restrictions are put in place throughout most of the state Governor Newsom says that hes establishing a strike team to enforce the states covid19 rules that includes a number of workplace and business licensing agencies like cal osha, alcohol Beverage Control and the chp but there are still questions about how the rules will actually be enforced. This comes after permits were approved for 300 person protest to weddings and a 50 person demonstration all of them scheduled for the 4th of july. To how you address what some might perceive a mixed message in here. I dont have the benefit of the details of the permits chp is evaluating those permits now to see about how that can be done. Taken into account, the the governors orders and directives that we want for appropriate social distancing and limiting. To come together while still protecting rights assemble for for peaceful protest. For now the state is primarily targeting businesses that are out of compliance with the guidelines that includes the face mask mandate. Well to the south bay now more than 45 School Principals and administrators are in self quarantine because a potential coronavirus exposure. This comes following a meeting last week by the district superintendent were one School District employee tested positive for coronavirus the employee tested positive for coronavirus a few days after attending that in person Leadership Meeting and as a result, the other principals and administrators at that meeting were told to shelter in place and undergo testing and so far no one else has tested positive. The district says the complexity of developing the plan for reopening schools in the fall is why they chose to hold this meeting in person rather than online. I know there may be some there some the question. Every decision we make. But the reality is there is no road map for this pandemic. Although the School District says they followed all Health Department guidelines, the Santa Clara CountyHealth Department saying in part quote the health order currently in place allows local governments to conduct a Central Business in person and to decide for themselves. What is essential in this case, its not clear why meeting in person was necessary. It is a lesson for other Government Agencies even though they have the authority to hold an in person meeting it does not mean that they should exercise the right to do so unquote. Well to the north bay now napa county leaders are urging residents employees and visitors to report any covid19 safety violations such as failure to maintain physical separation and not wearing face coverings theyre establishing a covid19 Compliance Task force coalition to keep tabs on businesses restaurants and tasting rooms. It could take years for the u. S. Economy to recover from the coronavirus the Congressional Budget Office released a 10 year forecasts predicting the u. S. Unemployment rate will not return to pre pandemic levels for the next decade. Kron 4 s Taylor Bisacky reports on what this might mean for the bay area. The coronavirus has flipped twentytwenty upside down. But now experts say the pandemic will likely have a Lasting Impact on the countrys labor market over the next decade in its latest report, the Congressional Budget Office projects a 4. 4 Unemployment Rate at the end of 2030 which is higher than pre pandemic levels of 3. 5 in february this year as a longterm projections are. Filled with uncertainty all the time and even more right now i do think though that when you look back at previous recessions, there is something that you can learn particularly the last recession. Roughly at the same unemployment thats they were back in the Great Recession and in some parts of the country that actually never recovered country overall it to take about a decade to kind of get back to those Employment Level so its not out of the realm of possibility Jeff Belisario executive director at the Bay Area CouncilEconomic Institute says. Those projections could change in a highly dependent on public response policy response in trajectory of the virus. In june the u. S. UnEmployment Level fell to 11. 1 down from its peak of 14. 7 in april but now as cases rise in california and restrictions are put back in place. We continue to see california as lose jobs. That will certainly slow. If not completely halt the recovery. Sharing california at todays numbers, new unemployment claims numbers we have. Nearly 280,000. Jordan 80,000 new. Unemployment climbs just filed in the week ending june 27 so were continuing to lose jobs throughout the state former Economic Development director Michael Bernick also raises concerns about trends happening now at least parts of the economy and found themselves able to operate with fewer number of some jobs are now being automated others are becoming remote something that will particularly impact the bay areas recovery historically. We have grown more quickly this time the industrys but i do think this time or industries are more prone to remote there.
