And the mutual aid that weve gotten from departments from santa cruz just sonoma has been invaluable as well as the state of california we have called in for reinforcements and they have come in the form of the chp a couple 100 officers that have been deployed here in the bay area that have been integral to our plans. Certainly we are constantly assessing the conditions and our intelligence to determine whether a curfew is the appropriate Law Enforcement tool. Lets be clear last night we chose to focus our Law Enforcement resources on the actual vandals. Looters people that are engaged in even in violent acts last night and it was a very different situation then say friday friday we had a very large scale demonstrations, almost 8,000 people where vandals and looters hid inside of that people otherwise peaceful demonstration. Last night we saw much more indiscriminate different shops all over the city getting targeted and i and im really pleased that our Police Department arrested 60 individuals who are engaged in that kind of criminal activity. So just to be clear curfew is a very indiscriminate tool and its important that we recognize the Historical Context of curfews. They have been used in the past by government as a form of oppression and racial discrimination. So we will be thoughtful before we employ that tool, but it is on the table were constantly assessing and we will continue to assess the use of it today just to further explore the curfew issue just a little bit mayor whos involved in the decisionmaking. Besides your office. O it is primarily driven by our chief of even we really are looking at the Law Enforcement utility yen is a pretty indiscriminate tool and we you know last night, San Francisco arrested 80 people that were simply violating the curfew. When we a lot a lot of a tax on our Law Enforcement resources we want to be strategic about how we use them and last night we were very focused on stopping illegal activity. We were able to stop a lot of illegal activity and also hold those vandals thieves and people that were intent on doing destruction and harm to our city they have been held accountable and we are continuing to investigate. Any charges so please if you have video footage that might be helpful to we are not going to stop investigating we plan to have more arrests going into the future because we are not going to tolerate this kind of destruction in our city we recognize that people are in tremendous pain we are in tremendous pain over the killing of george floyd but this is not a way to express that we do want to compliment people that participated in Peaceful Demonstrations, particularly yesterday there was a car caravan that was very respectful of the Health Pandemic that were experiencing right now we will continue to lift hate those types of safe and appropriate demonstrations, but we have no tolerance for the lawlessness that has been happening in oakland and frankly throughout the bay area and the country. Mayor you talked earlier about the chp coming in to help opd and the Alameda CountySheriffs Office in this situation that happened over the weekend he talked about mutual aid. What is that what is the plan involving a more aid may be from the National Guard, i know the city of San Francisco has them on standby is that similar to whats going on in oakland. You know we are in constant communication with state oh yes, they are the ones that can deploy those resources. Last i did check last night to see if National Guard is getting deployed into San Francisco because it would create more resources overall but the decision was made last night to not do that and that is not my call that that call happens at the state level but we do realize that we need resources weve got to protect our city through this moment of civil unrest. There we understand that there are demonstrations planned for walnut creek part of downtown along the creek was hit hard last night. We understand theres a planned demonstration for this afternoon there as well what are you hearing about more demonstrations in oakland. You know we know it to Peaceful Demonstrations are planned for today and again we will facilitate Peaceful Demonstrations particularly during the daytime hours but were urging everyone to stay home after dark. Know where your children are your grandchildren know where your friends and neighbors are we are in the middle of a deadly pandemic it is not safe for people to be out and we need as few people as possible out at night to be able to really focus our Law Enforcement efforts on those who are intent on doing destructive talmage to our city. Weve seen a lot of damage to Larger Stores chain sun national change such Walgreens Walmart targets but theyre also the mom and pop businesses in oakland that have been hit hard as well is there anything the city can do to help them because theyve been hit doubly hard first covid19 and now looting and vandalism. It has been so painful to see these beautiful Small Business owners that are such a critical part of our beloved community that have just gotten that 1, 2 the economic shutdown due to the coronavirus and now the indiscriminate vandalism that has happened not just in downtown that was the focus friday night but last night we sought stores throughout the fruitvale in east oakland. I dance and so we are here at the city of oakland to assist if you do need help with boarding up and were certainly working also on a beautification project to try and reclaim our downtown and help us all heal and recover. There have been a lot news reports talking about the fact that in a lot of cities there have been outside agitators coming in aimed strictly at looting and vandalism in destroying property are you finding the same thing in oakland. You know at this time i dont have all the arrest data so i cannot come to that conclusion. But i want to caution everyone. That it is unlikely that acetate ers showed up in cities across the country all at one time this pain is real its in our communities and we should not be in denial about that. Its a great point to. Understand of the 60 people arrested that you mentioned earlier there were also shots fired at the oakland Police Department building is that correct. That is correct and again i i want it really recognize that our officers are sacrificing a lot right now it has been very dangerous for that. Friday night we had nearly 30 officers injured and one way or anther and and of course our hearts go out to Patrick Underwood to is the federal security agent killed on friday night now law federal officials have not necessarily late his death with the protests. They are investigating it and they are declaring this an act of domestic terrorism, our hearts go out to him and of course our hearts go out to the family of george floyd yes, definitely and. And i also saw a report there are members of the oakland Police Department who are also kneeling with demonstrators in solidarity. You know that a beautiful protesters demonstrators asked officers to take a knee. The entire line went down on money in solidarity with the demonstrators there were applause is there there of a little brief moment of joy because let me be clear and the oakland Police Department has been unequivocal about this. They have no tolerance for racist cops it does not serve their profession. They have also been offended and shocked by what has happened in minneapolis. They share the communitys pain and they are incredibly dedicated to moving towards a more just and fair and legitimate form of police seen here in oakland and across the nation. One last question for you mayor in the time that we have left. Is oakland open today, downtown the food bail area is it shut down are you telling people to stay away whats your message to 2 folks who are thinking of going to oakland. Well first of all we are under a pandemic were under a shelterinplace order that is still in place in Alameda County and so people should not leave their home unless they have essential errands to run that is the case that im really urging people to not go out after dark please choose to stay home she was to keep everyone that you know home that is what is necessary for everyone safety right now and also allow us to put a stop to the lawless behavior which is not acceptable. Oakland mayor libby shaft thank you so much for spending some time with us great th welcome back everyone the time is 8. 13 good morning and thanks for staying with us lets check in with meteorologist dave spahr good look at the monday morning forecast and see how its shaping up outside your door dave good morning. Robin marty good morning. Good morning, everybody and were looking for improving sky conditions right now at this hour already seen the clouds kind of scoot out of here as we go to a mostly sunny mode into the afternoon. Theres a looks like the satellite picture still some stray showers lingering up there. The mountains of Northern California just a little bit there. A last shot coming in from u c berkeley, lots of blue skies already in appearance as we see the fog start to mix out temperatures for us now where the 60s off to the delta 59 meanwhile for livermore 60 a work 58 for fremont and we have some upper 50s up there in the north bay with the bottle already checking in at 61 along the san jose to but with how well tow 73 by high new it looks like by 3 were at 79. We will see some 80s for today but to actually its tomorrow its already be jumping into the 90s that will take a look at your 4 zone forecast coming up in a bit as well as that extended robin fact alright thank you, dave traffic looks better to at the toll plaza. Well to the east way now wanted creek was just one of several bay area cities to issue a curfew last night. Lets check in with kron 4 Sarah Stinson who is live in walnut creek this morning with a look at the damage there sarah. Well robin as the Morning Hours have continued on more and more people from the community are coming out to see the damage some of them bringing rooms in cleaning up doing anything they can to help is also city crews out here and they boards that theyre going to be boarding up all of the stores that were either broken into or the stories werent and need to be because we dont know what tonight hold even though that curfew does continue tonight at 8 oclock until 5 oclock here long that creek take a look at the video you can see just a hole in this glass window of one of the shops here at Broadway Plaza. It looks as though people used rocks from the fountain and then threw them out the windows to try and break in stores like as where im at right now nordstrom old navy victorias secret as we know macys ray ban just to name a few lulu lemon all broken into and then looted its this entire outdoor Shopping Mall in downtown area of walnut creek has been ravaged by almost a 100 people who came out here a lawsuit in la yesterday afternoon into last night breaking into the stores and stealing as much as they could i her heard from one man who was here at the time he said he saw a couple women with their hands full of clothes just running and earlier i saw hangers just scattered across the street across the sidewalks here at Broadway Plaza even saw what those pretzels broken into with the entire Cash Register gone. I talked with one man i saw him cleaning up and i asked him you know thats really great for your help in cleaning up what what brought you out re and this is what he had to say. Being up any debris i see it i see a bunch of glass know the walkway sort of kick it to the side i did bring a broom sell my brain that i was little bit. Them and why cleanup why come down here to do that. Its just the right thing to do its a beautiful city and cant believe Something Like this would happen just trying to get us back to normal as fast as possible that again, i know that a protest planned in. I encourage beneath the protests and it needs to be people advocate for change. But looting is no i had to get out again for change at all 7. Police say they made a number of arrests and more are likely to occur in the coming days also we know a woman was shot near a store that was being burglarized she was treated on scene taking the hospital which is already recovering at home an okay, as you heard from that man helping out this morning there is another protest a gathering of sorts thats planned for 3 oclock today at civic park in walnut creek and it looks a lot of people are saying they want to keep that peaceful protest. One woman even came up to me and said she was at the protest yesterday will the creek and that they had nothing to do with the looting that happened here at Broadway Plaza shes a whole nother group came into this city and just you know as i said ravage this shopping but of course you know police still looking into all the people who are responsible for looting here at broadway in the meantime theyre going to be boarding up stores cleaning up and hoping that people stay at home tonight. For that curfew im live in walnut creek Sarah Stinson kron 4 news okay. Thank you for that update sarah. Well check back with you throughout the morning. And in San Francisco the demonstrations continued on sunday as well as stores were vandalized and looted. Kron fours will tran live on Market Street this morning with a look at all the extensive damage done there. Well. Look right behind me marty this is one of the bank of america offices and the windows all boarded up not sure if its broken windows. I tried to peak around there and i can see through to the other side. But a lot of businesses in downtown either they had the windows broken or they did this to prevent those windows from breaking it was a night of unrest, this started out peacefully. Well in the on the on over the weekend. I should say at city hall. Let me show you ousands of people turned out outraised by what happened. The george floyd and Police Brutality theyre out the years it was peaceful they actually states 9 minutes of silence. And 9 minutes 9 minutes was important because thats the amount of time that that officer kept his knee on George Floyds neck. During that time there was a speaker that read off some of the last words of George Floyds life and then as the day moved on mayor london breed she felt fearful that things could get out of hand and then thats when she declared a state of emergency that said after 8 oclock the curfew would be in place until 5 oclock in the morning a lot of people they dispersed not a problem, but there were those who. Did not listen they went through San Francisco trying to get on to the bay bridge. They fanned through parts of San Francisco, including civic center and that force the Police Officers stepped follow them in their gear. I can tell you they said trash bins on fire they made about 80 arrests some of them were felony arrests and then they found many weapons including a molotov cocktail. Heres San Francisco police chief a bill scott talking about that. Because of a Public Health emergency that we are are still in by the way. To enhance the charges for those who are breaking into businesses doing during a state of emergency to add. Looting. To the charges for those of you who are thinking about coming to San Francisco too. Cause havoc. Were going to be ready and were going to do what we need to do in order to protect the city. You heard her say we will do what we need to do so it wasnt just the San FranciscoPolice Officers who moved in they actually called in about 200 and 200 other officers as part of mutual aid to help them keep the calm in the overnight hours. I personally saw about 3 police cars driving up and down Market Street but their lights on before the curfew expired at 5 oclock in the morning, they had their lights on no sirens but they were clearly visible also just in case things get out of hand, San Francisco mayor london breed actually has the california National Guard on standby. All right well, thanks love that live report from Market Street. This is about him in all those who are people of color who supported every single day from the trauma that we have to endure every single day please give one moment just towards in. Mayor london breed and other San Francisco city leaders neil for george floyd in the Mission District this happened at 24th and mission over the weekend breed took a knee alongside Roberto Hernandez who many refer to as the mayor of the mission in a tweet breed said quote, San Francisco must remember that what we are protesting for end quote. Now to the north bay theyre also peaceful protests in downtown napa on sunday afternoon. Demonstrators walking on 3rd and main street said this is video that was tweeted out by the napa Police Department napa police chief Robert Plummer also met with demonstrators to make sure their voices were heard and he was seen kneeling alongside demonstrators as they held signs that read black lives matter. Still ahead this morning as the unrest for justice over George Floyds death continues one bay area native is speaking out about how we can all contribute to change. And after the break the family of a man has filed a federal lawsuit against Princess Cruises following his death from the coronavirus. Longs wife also contracted covid19 but recovered the lawsuit is one of roughly a dozen filed by grand princess passengers or their families. Princess cruises spokeswoman says that the company does not comment on pending litigation. Yes, so the fog in the clouds in which to deal with this morning. But theyre departing as we see blue skies off towards left or so forecast to come back to what good morning, welcome back first and june and its going to feel a lot hotter than the first head june 2nd to june come tomorrow as far as to tell us more about that high day. A good morning. Marty good morning, everybody and the opening up those skies quite a bit it looks like at this hour now were finally getting into and some areas kind of mostly sunny skies, but still some lingering cloud cover off to the distance just a touch as we can see from the shot new c berkeley still a blue skies up at the top as you will notice an sfo no delays this morning even though we did help over the fog kind of meandering around little bit this morning. What does it look like from space well we have some of those scattered clouds we talked about a lot more down to socal with the leftover cutoff low, its kind of Unfinished Business if you will but after today, everybody is clearing out the big way and warming up as it looks like today, nothing compared to whats coming middle to upper 80s for the Central Valley looks like today. Sacramento coming in at 85 Central Coast lower to middle 60s at that got 70s down to a southern california. Now the longrange forecast models we do see as we get into next weekend another shot of rain that looks like now the first hit not so noticeable but the second hit looks like it might come with some colder air and that means some mountain snow is going on getting awfully late in the season after another heat spike again talking about maybe some mountain snows and even as late as the middle of next week looks like the possibility of still some rain for the bay area. All right, heres a look at your 4 zone forecast 66 coming in for San Francisco, 64 daly city pacific at 6165 for half moon bay. Northern end of the peninsula upper 60s 69 for burley gain heading down south to the southern end of the peninsula middle to upper 70s 78 for palo alto Mountain View 75 in the south the upper 70s, 82 for morgan hill and the east bay shoreline to the south middle 70s, south the tri valley about 80 going on for livermore something not pleasanton so at 77 84 walnut creek 82 for concord somebody 8 san ramon was 69 for berkeley and up to the north bay 67 for delay of the cool spot 85 for fairfield 79 for napa and sonoma at 80 to 82 also for santa rosa and 70s heading down south along one oh one 66 for point break. So again tomorrow and into wednesday thats going to be honest todays in the bunch here were going to be looking at temperatures approaching near 100 for wednesday cooling off a little bit as we head on to the weekend and again watching up for chance of seeing some rain and even maybe in the sierra some mountain snow sunday into monday robin whats going out of the area roadways. Its improving it looks a lot better day the drive into San Francisco has thinned out nicely so if youve been waiting are holding off. When a fellow commissioner Roger Goodell says the nfl is saddened by floyds death and the violent demonstrations all across the country and says theres an urgent need for action. But some players and fans think hes a hypocrite goodell said in part the protesters reaction to these incidents reflects the pain anger and frustration that so many of us feel and that the nfl is committed to continuing the important work to address the systematic issues together with our players clubs and partners as human beings. We need to identify and challenge prejudice rather than deny of silence in the face of injustice only works to protect and perpetuate that injustice. But critics point to how the nfl handled former 49 ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick when he tried to peacefully bring attention to Racial Injustice by taking a knee during the National Anthem and he ended up being shown the door and no team has hired him since then. The fortyniners are pledging 1 million to help fight social injustice. Owner jed york says the money will be given to organizations dedicated to creating change. The team is also standing behind an Advocacy Group of current and former pro athletes and activists Whose Mission is to make an impact on social justice and racial inequality. And on kron 4 last night we spoke with social commentator host of cnns united shades of america author comedian and bay area native w kamau bell, we asked him about the social unrest over George Floyds killing. A number black men have been killed on armed over the last few years weve seen protests but nothing like this what are you a trip attribute this activity to why this death with mister floyd is different. Thank you have a deep and i cant separate this from the moment, were still in the middle of a Global Pandemic and its easy to forget that because everything is going on in the news right now. But people are jobless. They are so many people are sick. Many people are seeing that people are pretty die and especially the black and brown communities they hit harder by this Global Pandemic and so in the midst of this theres this feeling of like we cant even get a break from racism in the middle of a Global Pandemic i think it you can separate this from the from the pandemic. Come out, im curious about your thoughts about the white interaction in all of this said and it goes both ways as you know. There are a lot of white people participating in this protest. Lot of white people being blamed for some of the violence and the looting. A lot of white people supporting the cause a lot of white people may be some skeptics and certainly there are still races out there as we all know, im just wondering from your perspective. What can a white person do for you in this cause that you think is positive that can make a difference. I first thing they need to start thinking about theyre doing it for themselves structural and institutional racism hurts all of us is hurt black people the hardest hits us. The hardest. So i think they need to stop thinking about doing something for the black community and actually only a more equitable and just society a more a society where everyone has access to education and health care and the criminal Justice System is is it is as equity and it is better for all of us anyway but to stop getting caught up in what can i do for black people or to help them it at the i would say is that we also have to in the bay area theres a long history of protesting, we know not every white person so to the protests in the same way we can all recognize those people when they show up we had protests in Downtown Berkeley a few years ago and there are white people stopping the black bloc anarchists from breaking into the trader joes so i think if you really want if you can get out there if you thought youd be safe out there which i think thats key again when the move a Global Pandemic then get out there and use your whiteness to stop these other white peoples user white is between those white people and the damage that do. Well we have posted the full interview with w kamau bell online i just head over to our website at kron 4 dot com. Were checking in on conditions outside your door we see more sunshine here at sfo is partly cloudy 62 degrees good morning, welcome back ron force happy to be saluting the class of 2020.
