Good morning and thanks for oining us, lets get first to the breaking news this morning that fatal crash 4 people were killed and only the driver survived in a crash on highway 85 in san jose that driver arrested for dui covers will tran is at the scene of the crash and we could still see some vehicles in activity there whats going on. The vehicle is still here is an suv we do know that this scene will not be cleared earlier than 9 oclock this morning we heard in the overnight hours that possibly it would be cleared at 8 but now theyre saying its a bigger scene and they thought because the sun is up they can clearly see what theyre tackling at this time it is a massive scene which is why southbound 85 just south of cala road will not be open at least for another couple of hours as theyre still investigating the latest Development James and darya you can see theres a tow truck driver on the right side of your screen so they are cleaning it up taking measurements and then they will remove the suv which is on the left side of your screen i am literally on the freeway at this time is spent shut down since the overnight hours because they want to have full access to this so cars are being taken off of southbound 85 at cala road and then you can reconnect well past the scene on the left side you can see those of cars heading northbound on 85. Let me show you video that we got at around 10 oclock last night we do know that 6 people altogether were inside the suv that driver you talked about arrested for dui we are learning this morning that driver was not seriously injured. Scene so horrific so drawn out that we do know that 2 people actually were ejected from the suv a couple of others actually were trapped inside altogether we do know that 3 men. One woman died. We do know that another person is in the hospital at this time fighting for his are her life at this particular time. We also believe according to the chp they are looking into along with a dui arrests are also looking into possible speed as a factor with coronavirus in place now that the freeways are a lot. More open and they usually are so at this particular time thats one component but we do know if we can show a little bit in the Center Screen right there are some of the white markers thats where it appears that that driver lost control zigzagged all over the place so thats why this scene is a lot bigger than they even thought because it was dark at the time they didnt see what they were dealing with. Now they know and thats why its been pushed back even later. So about 9 or 9. 30 until they can possibly reopen southbound 85. James darya all right, thanks a lot. Well. 7 03 is the time to turn our attention back to the coronavirus a good news, we have San Francisco and san mateo counties on monday starting to reopen businesses following the lead of some of the other counties around the bay always with restrictions crabber sara stinson live in San Francisco to tell us about the rules that come along with this reopening sarah. Yes, some of the easements with those restrictions are now the now monday customers will be able to walk up to shops like the one behind me and a pick up items that theyd like to buy of course that means theyre going to have to know what these stores offer. You can see marine layer still has a board on its windows and other stores have signs on them that say were still temporarily closed. Hopefully by monday. Those signs are off the boards or Garden Stores will be able to take advantage of this new curbside take a look at the some video i just shot here on Chestnut Street a lot of stores they do have web sites, including i think a lot of people will be excited that apple will be here. A gap is here so for a big name stores that you know are in a mall because malls are not included in this that people can now go and pick up items instead of having to wait for it to be delivered. This is a part of californias phase 2 of reopening the economy and we have a list of the bay area counties who are doing this as well. This is because theyre seeing no spikes in cases and seeing a flattening of hospitalizations all good news. But again this does not apply to shopping malls when the shelterinplace order went into effect many businesses had to lay off employees making our unemployment rates spike significantly its been really hard for people, especially here in San Francisco having to shut down stores it will be interesting to see how this all turns out its just hopefully this next step can help businesses make a little bit more money and help have some success in this time of need doing curbside only pick up will necessarily be easy for some local shops who dont have web sites or really any social media they depend on people going into the store looking at what they have and then buying it so thats going to be a challenge. But mayor london breed talked about the benefits of heading into phase 2. And so what this means now for our city. Is incredible because were talking about many of those Small Businesses in various neighborhoods where you see many of those shops that are closed. They will be able to open for pickup and 4. Curbside pickup and delivery which is going to be incredible. And weve seen restaurants get creative with trying to you know sell even you drink slick margarita is trying to make some money. Theyve been selling food for pick up on curbside so theyve got good been pretty creative so be it will be able to see how stores get creative trying to sell their things to people. A San Francisco officials will be releasing more details today about these new restrictions with the easement on these restrictions and theyll tell us a little bit more details what they need to do to be able to do this Curbside Pickup as we heard the other day some of the restrictions and easements offer restaurant says ms. Same thing today from the officials so stay tuned to our app kron on it will give you the very latest for now live in San FranciscoSarah Stinson back to you. Ok thank you very much sara and as we take a closer look at some of numbers here locally you can see that theyre still on the high side for the bay area we have a total of now more than 10,000 confirmed cases with 371 deaths statewide the number of cases is more than 73,000 now with almost 3,000 deaths across the country were approaching 1. 4 million cases with more than 84,000 deaths associated to covid19. If you want to take a closer look at the global numbers or the hyper local city by city numbers go to our website at kron 4 dot com. We have that information there for you. Today ousted vaccine director doctor red bright will testify before congress he was in charge of the office so that was in charge of developing a vaccine for the coronavirus until he was fired. According to his prepared testimony hes going to explain. Why hes afraid the pandemic will get worse in the winter and its something he says told you so months ago and that nobody listened to and infect demoted him instead of a spreading the word of what he had to say hes also going to share his belief that the Trump Administration is unprepared for the covid pandemic wrights testimony comes a week after he filed a whistleblower complaint saying he was removed from his post in retaliation for not promoting a drug chloroquine that the president had said was a good coronavirus treatment. President trump meantime has publicly disagreeing with one of the top members of the committees Covid Task Force doctor Anthony Fauci doctor fauci warned senators that opening states to quickly could have dire consequences. He said without a vaccine in place by the fall, starting school could put lives at risk. He advised schools to exercise caution. If and when they reopen saying that some shouldnt at all at this point. But yesterday the president declared school should reopen and he denounced doctor fauci is warning. The cops just playing both sides these are just its just to me its not an acceptable answer, especially when it comes to school. I think they should open the schools absolutely i think they should. 10 very little impact young people. Doctor fauci says that his opinions are based on evidencebased science and he also says. The president considers multiples perspectives when making decisions. Well with the majority of classes transition into Online Students d staff will have to adjust of course we have kron fours Ella Sogomonian now she spoke with the president of both san jose and San FranciscoState Universitys about what changes they see on the future. Cal State University students will have to learn to create an Online Community to substitute the Traditional College experience thats because the Coronavirus Crisis is forcing the School System to host most Classes Online to prevent people from getting badly sick. Despite that some students will still be invited on to campus for courses that require hands on learning. But not everyone can participate in that face to face experience even for the courses for example are face to face there will be students who cannot get to campus. I have because theyre in atrisk group or because they live so far away and they cant get here so well accommodate every student you cant make a face to face cost. I will also accommodate a faculty member again because you know that was great that he chased accommodating physical distancing also means downsizing on campus housing. Which means another major decision will be who can stay at the dorms and what were doing right now is putting together what the priorities might look like. We havent made any decisions about that, but certainly somebody who is in a major where they have to be here for small classes and they out of the where they cant commute were obviously going to be very interested in seeing how we can support some of those students for other students who might live in the and all are in classes where they can take them. Then they probably wouldnt be a high priority but that those are the kinds of questions well be asking looking at some of the numbers and really r r cleaning protocols. Our ability to control safety of students people may be wondering of tuition will change but the s of state president explains. Well its hard to put a price on the traditional classroom experience setting up the virtual experiences, a big Financial Investment moving instruction virtually doesnt save any money it actually cost more than it cost more because we have to invest weekly in the things people who did your well. So this past semester we spent several 100,000 on laptops and hotspots like ice for our students our faculty and staff knew that thats where molly now looking at specialized equipment that our students for example need to study her children while the san jose state president believes theres a Silver Lining setting students up for a new working environment thats been sped up by the pandemic. Good news for them about that is when they actually moved into the workforce, they will be moving into an employment market that is very different from what it was. Today twitter announced that its employees of the future will be able to decide whether they work from home in a virtual environment or come due on an actual twitter campus. Sports is a different story given that it requires contact. So thats canceled across the board this fall semester. Coaches will just have to get creative in train them from a distance to make sure that they remain in shape once game day finally comes. In the newsroom Ella Sogomonian kron 4 news. So the real rainmaker is actually still ahead of us. Tomorrow and saturday are drier and warmer days the forecast friday bringing mostly sunny skies will be a beautiful one for maybe a bit longer of a walk and then into the finish of the weekend sunday will be much cooler cloudier and with widespread showers just how much rain can we be seeing by the time we work through sunday and monday well the north bay can see nearly an inch of it thats a lot to be talking about for this time of year. But its already spent anywhere from a half inch to 3 quarters of an inch possible with lighter amounts down in the south bank. Good to be saying that after what has been a dry past winter season. 60s and 70s for todays daytime highs, it work and i 69 degrees. Can save in the mid to low 70s. Well, San Francisco at 66 degrees. Tomorrow and saturday as i mentioned youre better days for a longer walk a better chance to get outside the backyard. Well sunday and monday you might want to be hunkering down the doors or so with highs only in the 60s and sunday, especially really bringing the rate to us thats your forecast james and darya also to back away very good. Back at 7. 30 we have some new concerns this morning about the rapid coronavirus test being used by the white house after a new study found that it frequently mrs. Positive cases, word that it could be up to wrong 50 of the time. And but its also theres news that theyre rationing the only fda approved drug to treat coronavirus Elizabeth Cohen has more. This may be the most sought after drug on our pandemic written planet rand s of the year the only drug shown to work against coronavirus and be authorized by the u. S. Food and drug administration. And now the state of california and guidance to hospitals says they can consider having a lottery to decide which patients will get it thats because theres not nearly enough from des severe to go around. Take San Francisco for example. They have around 70 patients in the hospital with confirmed Coronavirus Infections. But so far theyve only been allocated enough from des severe for about 4 patients for the entire city. Doctor annie look meyer is an Infectious Disease specialist at zuckerberg San FranciscoGeneral Hospital having such limited supplies is challenging. She knows. She will have to tell some patients no its not what we all went into medicine to do we would like to be able to provide the best of your for everyone. And when we think it would benefit and were clearly just not in that place yet and that and that part is really heartbreaking how did you feel when you saw that just a handful of patients and all of San Francisco would be able to get this medicine, we understand its a really difficult decisions are going to have to be made and not just in San Francisco in texas for example they have nearly 1700 coronavirus patients in the hospital. But the state was allocated only enough remdesivir year for about a 155 patients. The u. S. Department of alth and Human Services hasnt explained how they decided how much from des severe to send to each state or why some places got up before others and thats for this letter wednesday from 2 members of Congress Asking for an explanation. Im concerned were not giving us a drug thats the first ray of hope in treating coronavirus to the right places at the right time hes asking for transparency in how rationing the limited supply of the only drug known to help patients with covid19. Do we know if this applies in any way to vaping. Well that no one has yet studied vaping and coronavirus specifically but there is a lot of evidence that vaping disables the sillier which are little microscopic hairs in your nose and upper respiratory tract which push out capture push out viruses and bacteria so just a day being a sus like smoking in terms of that we know the vaping depresses immune function in your lungs just like smoking. And the taping or triggers inflammatory processes are no lines just like smoking. So while we dont have any direct evidence on on vaping in covid19. If you want we know about the biology of vaping compared to the vials your smoke are basically the same and so i would think that vaping would do the same thing. Were hearing a lot about anybody treatments for coronavirus an antibody tests but how do they help or any bodies fight the virus like covid19 we have Mandy Gaither now with a closer look at how they work. Antibodies are proteins in the blood that attach themselves to viruses limiting infection and a learning white blood cells to comment to attack and eliminate the virus. And many cases of the body encounters the same virus again the immune system has left over antibodies that remember the previous infection. These cells can either fight off the virus directly or produce even more antibodies to help prevent the infection. Doctor sanjay gupta says researchers arent entirely sure why this process works so well for some viruses and not others there are some viruses that are immune systems seem to easily forget. Immunity may be short lived after encounters with some common seasonal coronaviruses which can cause the common cold that could explain why we repeatedly get sick with something as simple as a cold and some viruses like the flu mutate frequently which means our old anti bodies no longer work against new strains. While most experts do believe that were probably going to have some protection after being infected with the coronavirus were still not sure just how long that protection will be. Or how strong for todays health minute. Im Mandy Gaither. Our coverage of the coronavirus continues on our website, its always there for you kron 4 dot com. The latest updates. The latest interactive maps and the latest numbers too as we continue to track the curve here at the bay area and and 37 and today people will be allowed back into the waters were surfer was killed by a shark and Santa Cruz County kron fours reyna harvey has more. La just is very actually was out here talking to some of the residents. That live in this area miss mana actually walked past me and we were talking a moment for e viewers you go ahead and step in the shot with the mana what are your thoughts about you know like you mentioned, you said something very touching about being out here living out here and this is not something you see every day. No no definitely not something you see every day see surfers every day i come out every day for a walk on the beach and a you see many many surfers here. Always have in the 7 years. Ive been here theres a lot of surfing. Im so sad for the loss for his family. I read that he was he has been a lifelong surfer so he he really was into the sport into the making the board son. You know its a its a really sad thing. But i i also read that its been almost 50 years since the last california loss of life. First surfer so the risk is very very small. I think one of the issues is. Once once somebody is hurt. Im getting them up because of that the steps washed away. And so its very hard to get somebody up quickly too. You know, sometimes its not the attack, its the aftermath the shock and and not getting getting help soon enough. So. Thats just my thoughts on it. For you you live out here i saw you this morning actually just walked out youre getting ready to go for a morning walk knowing that that happened so close to where you live. For the community at large, you know how does that feel for you guys well, you know, i watched kids in the water every day they dont go out that far. Its pretty shallow and in i dont think i dont think we need to be worried about using the using the beach in using the water. You know the ways and really begun. People have been a pretty far on the thats where they are a little bit today they close down some areas. Now theyre going to be reopening the beach eating a lot of people will be out here swimming or a little hesitant after well with with the current restrictions you can only be on the beach. From a until 11. And after 5. So if youre the beach between 11 5 you need to be in the water. You cant be on the beach you cant bring anything in sit on the beach. So it kind of really limits you know the amount you said its going to get but if youre if youre just walking or if with your family and you keep you know thats fine or you could be in the water mean but you cant cant be on the beach so its hard to bring kids son. You know have them play in the surf yeah. Well this morning, thank you so much for joining me this morning to let you get back to your walk that youre getting ready to go do. But again youre like you mentioned a lot of residents just heartbroken from that attack and im asking other people theyre coming out here to be saving cautious as youre out and making sure that you are in the water if you are because again theyre doing at 6 feet of distancing practicing social distancing out here on the beach. So again daria well be talking more people as theyre out here this morning. Soon as they open up the beaches here. Some 41 is the time a memorial for the men and women killed in the line of duty went on as scheduled. Despite challenges from the coronavirus pandemic like most things these days it moved online our washington dc correspondent kelli meyer has more. Carlos j. One by one the names of 307 members of Law Enforcement were read aloud from the state of alabama, the national Law Enforcement officers memorial moved its annual candlelight vigil for officers who lost their lives in the line of duty to the internet. I didnt think it would hit me in charge. Not being there stacy allen had her flights and hotel book to be a part of this years vigil. She lost her husband lieutenant aaron allen with the Southport Indiana Police Department in july 2017 stacey says she feels for the families going through this without that in person support. Im Trevor Shirley in washington where another major showdown is shaping up in im 45 and weve got a little cool down ahead some fog on the bridge to them. So it made me feel like i wasnt as i was like ok, well i can see anybodys lights anyway. Yeah i was along. Biggs stake, the fog over the traffic for sure that golden gate have been a foggy start to the day but things still great but a lot clearer than they were it out there right now you can see well across the bridge and Orange County where gucci putting north huge you run into some thought spots up in Sonoma County and then if youre heading south on highway one on up and down the peninsula, Half Moon Bay and other spots right there at the coast of also been pretty foggy cloud cover will gradually burn off lift throughout the course the day and weve actually got some sunshine to look for 2 later on today between some of those passing clouds temperatures are mostly in the 50s but oakland you saw what theyve been in the low 60s through the morning making you are warm spot in the bay area as of right now still need the jacket on whether youre heading outside at the coast or further inland or on the same for a vote to start this thursday now there are some light showers right up there across the north bay more like misty conditions searching along 80 than into sonoma and marin counties showers will remain pretty light for the most part through the day today and pretty sparse as well that wont be the case come sunday as this system thats entered out well into the pacific will make its way our direction and not is actually result in more widespread showers that we saw in egypt this week now be coming our way on sunday as for today light showers mostly in the north bay, but a couple of those sprinkles could drift further southward. Briefly. Increased sunshine later today and then tomorrow what we see is a lot more sunshine. Friday and saturday will be here nicest days for maybe a bit longer of a walk. Also on the drier side before saturday night into sunday. Rainfall pushes back in and what that means for us is some pretty good rainfall totals, especially in the north bay or we just near an inch of rainfall by monday, a showers are likely to continue on and start of next week Mountain View and san jose on the lighter side of things the south bay. Well we could see half an inch various like the peninsula, the east bay. That means if youre going outside today enjoy it, but keep the jacket on hand it will be a nice day ahead of us with 60s and 70s. Tomorrow and saturday a little bit nicer though after that we cool down into sunday monday and tuesday with sunday bringing our best chance of any sort of widespread rainfall. Thats your forecast all send it back to you guys in the studio. Very good john. Thank you quick check of a couple of the bridges that are out there. This morning. Well see what those conditions are like this is the Richmond Center fell bridge toll plaza and as you can see were moving along just fine no major problems to report traffic moving smoothly through the toll gates and in the Murray County heading down in San Francisco as you can see here in the live shot of the Golden Gate Bridge traffic is moving without any issue this morning. Again the only major problem that were tracking continues to be that situation in the south bay where we have that accident on southbound 85 in san jose thats. Fission pretty much closed off all the roads so well get another update from will tran hes live at the scene and hopefully have another update on when they estimate theyll reopen it.
