Thats close right now right next to those southbound lanes are now open and i can tell you people are speeding. Actually saw one person get pulled over by chp who is here in forcing the speed limit of 40 Miles Per Hour and thats because the northbound side is still being worked on so they want to make sure people stay safe. Take a look at this video is from earlier when they first opened it up at 7 oclock just minutes before that officers on motorcycles were the first to drive on it and it was exciting moment because this is a 70 yearold bridge deck it was it so somewhere in tears, they needed to replace it is a priority project for caltrans to maintain one of the bay areas most heavily traveled corridors it connects the peninsula to downtown San Francisco. And usually when were not in a stay at home order. More than 240,000 cars drive through it daily. The department determined they needed to fast track this project during this time it was originally scheduled for july 2020 is supposed to be an 18 day project and they moved it up to now theyve got it done in 8 days caltrans works with miers and sons frequently and theyre known for getting the job done quickly because caltrans incentivizes them by giving them a bonus this bonus will be about 10 million because they got it done 10 days earlier than projected, lets hear from caltrans about this project and what drivers can expect. It seems really happy to have this back in service, but we still have another day of work to get northbound open and then some 5 finishing work will happen over the next couple of weeks. The speed has been lowered on alum any right now to 40 Miles Per Hour of all we have the construction crews out here. Chp is out here in force is going to be monitoring the speeds obviously traffic is a lot lighter in the bay area right now so its important for people to watch your speeds when they come through here so we can remain safe. And that is definitely the goal keep yourself safe and keep these a construction worker safe as theyre working to get this done quickly just the final touches being made to the northbound lanes right now and that again will reopen tomorrow afternoon around 3 who knows maybe a little earlier because they are working so quickly but i will let you know when that happens always stay tuned to kron 4 dot com and remember slow down out there when youre coming around here to our maybe circle. Although San Francisco as the mild spotters are actually a little bit head is so its Half Moon Bay. So what goes on today is basically mostly sunny. And then tonight late tonight here comes that marine layer with the clouds thickening up a bet that will be a happening saturday morning. And then later on during the day on saturday there will was asking about gardening activities story of this rain shower just happens to it when youre doing something productive or so forth. By the time we get to next weekend marty back to you ok dave thanks a lot see a few minutes. Well earlier this morning, it was a very touching and heartfelt a display of affection as public agencies were on arena and thanking Health Care Workers at zuckerberg San Francisco general hospital, a great way to say thank you for all that theyre doing kron fours rain harvey was there. At a time marty theyre actually just wrapping it up right now a lot of those First Responders that we saw earlier go on inside the hospital to start their shifts now we want to show you how the celebration all came together today were going to show you the video of those adopters does nurses the lv and all walking inside of the hospital to start their shift. Today is a medical Team Appreciation day here at the hospital and they started their did that change is Warning System about 6. 30 to 7. 30 you can see a uniformed members there for presenting the San Francisco sheriffs office. The Fire DepartmentSan FranciscoPolice Department all out here thanking those frontline workers. Now this is the only Level One Trauma Center in San Francisco and northern san mateo we talked to some of the nurses that were working today. Heres what they had to say. Nice to be with all these people on. The madness isnt done. Yes, San Francisco as a whole never ceases to amaze me i think that thats one thing that were known for everybody comes together and were all here for each other no matter what and i mean this is just like that. Another example of how are always you know together and helping each other out and showing our support its amazing to say its the best place to work. Yeah what are looking at right now is some of the nurses that are in there. They are actually well youre looking at one of the other medical staff that just talked to the live shot. But youre looking at the nurses there and as people are walking into the hospital, theyre taking their temperature to make sure that im asking you a list of questions that are related to covid19 to the biggest thing, one of the medical professionals said to me today was that you at home can help i just staying home and practicing social distancing. One of those main key tips that they said will help. A healthy, keep them safe. All right for now reporting in San Francisco right harvey kron 4 news. And what a great show of gratitude on both sides and appreciation reyna real really had to be touching for you to be there. It was in. Thats when harvey reporting for us from San Francisco on to other news this morning governor newsoms controversial plan to start the new school year. This summer is running into some push back from educators. The governor wants the early start to offset any learning loss due to the coronavirus pandemic but School Districts, especially those that are cash strapped like the west Contra Costa School District says that they simply dont have the resources for an early start. Number one. Definitely more resources spread more funding, great deduction of kos isis materials for teachers that includes masks resources to keep teachers and students safe which we dont have right now. Well the cdc also released guidelines for physical distance seen in classrooms schools will be required to keep 6 feet between desks School Administrators and the Teachers Union both say that employee contracts might also presented another obstacle in moving to an earlier start date. Bay area, colleges and universities are also facing lower enrollment rates for the next Academic Year because of the coronavirus kron fours Taylor Bisacky explains how schools are coping. And if were not able to likes fully reopen. There will be financial impacts are we concerned about that are we looking at that absolute distance or ease president of the association of independent California Colleges and universities. Were a icc you says theyre hoping for the best but planning for the worst come fall the ai ccu represents 85 independent nonprofit colleges and universities in the state. Including santa clara university, university of San Francisco in California College of the arts to name a few all of them bracing for financial setbacks all of Higher Education and public and private nonprofit were in this together that we do have a unique said count were not state funded institution or not. Statesupported institutions most private colleges nonprofit colleges art which independent which means were enrollment dependent and so that will that financial modeling something were certainly looking at the American Council of education projects, a 15 drop in National Enrollment for the 2020 to 2021 Academic Year, something that Gap Year Programs feel as interest increase is definitely an increase in demand i think that a lot of students are very confused just on the timelines that they have they would have to pause it for University Early tv is the ceo of youre on a Gap Year Program based in San Francisco where students travel in volunteer abroad. And later attend workshops in the city. Tv says theyre seeing more interest from students and parents who dont want to pay the hefty tuitions for online learning. A lot of students our athletic screen fatigue i would say at this point where this general apathy towards online classes. However, the coronavirus also affects get here programs. Instead of traveling abroad, theyre looking at alternative experiences in the states. Either way students are forced to make life changing decisions during that time when nothing is certain until every second reporting kron 4 news. And still ahead on the kron 4 morning news, the president is putting forward new measures that the he hopes will keep the elderly safe and Nursing Homes were going to take a look at that plan after the break. Before we get to that though lets take a live look outside at the situation on the san mateo bridge were traffi as the coronavirus continues to put seniors in Nursing Homes at risk the president is putting forward some new measures. Hes hoping will keep them safe. The new initiatives include more ppe shipments to medicaid and medicare Nursing Homes also 81 million in funding to increase inspections. And a requirement for Nursing Homes to report information about covid19 cases to the cdc. Also requiring Nursing Homes to inform residents and family members about any new cases. Given that it should be obvious that it happened in fact it is not happening consistently off to the families find out for the first time from the media that virus is spreading in a facility where a loved one is living really surprising. Actually how little we know how that many of those numbers actually are. And this new plan does not include testing for residents and staff at longterm care facilities. California Public Health officials released the number of deaths and Nursing Homes earlier this week for the first time and they show about one 3rd of confirmed covid19 deaths in california have come from these nursing facilities. In the east bay, the state has donated trailers to house the homeless in alameda. This is in hopes of continuing to flatten the curve of coronavirus infections. Now only those who are 60 years or older with Underlying Health issues without covid19 symptoms will be allowed to live in those mobile homes. Staff members from the citys homeless programs Operation Dignity and Building Futures have identified the first group of people to move in. It will be to residents per trailer until there eventually transitioned into permanent housing, then others will move in to take their place. The folks are hopes that. You know we could have known then what the way is going to people are unemployed, this could be right so having that mindset in dealing with a friend i think you get a different perspective that taken care of each community. Well the city will be providing meals every day as long as and also weekly a laundry services, Homeless Outreach team members will be checking in with them every day a paramedic will also the doing wellness checks on each person 4 days a week. The city says theres enough funding to keep those trailers at alameda 0. 4 9 months. Coming up this morning were going to hear from oakland mayor libby shaft on the latest efforts to protect seniors with a brand new program. Plus well find out what else is being done to try and stop the spread of good morning welcome back to the kron 00 04am morning news, one of the most vulnerable populations during this pandemic our Senior Citizens and thats part of the reason the city of oakland is launching what theyre calling the great oakland check in begins tomorrow. And earlier this morning we talked with oakland mayor libby schaff about the program and some other ways that the city of oakland is protecting people during this pandemic its the great oakland check in that youre talking about and we wanted to get back to the fact theres a twofold goal with this new program. Thats right most important we want open doors to know that people care about them that there are resources theres free testing theres a new Meal Delivery program for seniors living alone. We want everyone to know that they are cared for that there are resources and that we as a community are going to get to this together but the second reason is we want to remind people to take the census that drives critical funding for the next 10 years to serve our community. So those are the 2 things are going to be talking to people about and we still could use more volunteers so if you want to make calls from the comfort of your home reach out to people tell them how much you care about them and that there is help to get them through this pandemic please contact my office 5. 10 to 3, 8, 3, 1, 4, one or go to bit lee slash great oakland check in. Mayor what are you doing i know that you kind of shutting down certain streets to lift peoples spirits and you can stay in as long as you possibly can that peoples morale seemed to be down a little bit talk about how youre trying to help close the streets to get people out while practicing touch social distance. Thats right our slows Streets Program has been really popular and now we are taking input if you dont want to slow street will listen to that too but this weekend Lauren Bailey 5 new streets across the city go to the citys website oakland ca 0 dot to find out the nearest street by you and please give lake merritt a break lake merritt was too proud of get like a good. Heres a map that shows the orange streets on that are the new ones that are going to be open for the first time this weekend, this is not for block parties people this is for social distanced recreation so spread out law runner roller skate bike. Do whatever it takes to get yourself outside for some fresh but due respect social distancing bring a mask with you just oclock covering so that you can stay safe. Mayor speaking about lake merritt over the weekend we saw huge crowds at lake merritt are you getting the sense that people in oakland. After 6 weeks of had enough of a social distancing image and they just need to get outside. But ive got to just appeal to everyone, what we are doing is working that means we have to keep doing it. So keep that social distance, no gatherings of with people outside your immediate household and do wear a clock mask it can just be a tshirt it can be a bandanna dont have to buy anything fancy but im going to be down at the lake this asking people to respect these rules and also giving out some free masks from a local designer leslie evers. Now we saw Marshawn Lynch out there oakland zone Marshawn Lynch out there doing his part as well. And we all have to do our part we got to keep this going we are saving lives, but we are not out of this yes goes somewhere else go to a slow just give the lake a break its the lakes 100 50th birthday she deserves a break would think mayor last night who held a virtual town hall meeting one of the focuses that you had last night was talking about the Governors Task force on job recovery and also putting equity. Into the heart of economic reality this really hits home in oakland. It really does and just like we are focusing on the Racial Disparities in Health Outcomes we have to come back better than we were before and think about whos been hurt most by this shelter in place and pandemic and so as we bring our economy back we need to make sure that our workers are safe and that we are getting people back to work in a way that they are going to be supported if an interaction like this happens again. This is our opportunity to learn lessons and look for those silver because we know that people are really suffering right now in the bay area, the cost of living has been hard and we have so many people out of work we got to get them back but in a way that is going to be safe and healthy. You know, i may id be remiss if i didnt ask you as a person how are you holding up are you getting antsy and hows your family doing. Well thank you for you just saw my tech support of my husband who also working from home weve got 2 young shout out to the amazing educators in the oakland Public Schools that are keeping our kids even through these difficult times i got to say i still love my family impacted, and its just a little bit more than i usually get well as the mayor so were in good spirits. Thank you for asking and i hope that everyone else has not given up we have got to keep this going it is working it is saving lives, one other really important thing i want people to know and has expanded eligibility to use our free testing sites if you think that you have covid if youre experiencing any symptoms that were you you can get a free test anyone who lives or works in Alameda County. You can go to oakland ca dot gov slash testing you do need an appointment so you can get appointment there or if youre in oakland, you can call 3, 1, 1, to get an appointment to use our free testing site insurance not required. I want to ask you this this is a little bit out of your area but im sure youve heard from the oakland unified School District about governor fought about starting the school year earlier maybe in july or august what are you hearing now about that possibility happening in oakland. You had a early start date and it is my lane because im not just the mayor of oakland like i said im a mom of 2 Public School kids thats how it affects me listen we are never going to get these days back in our childrens education and education mean ever and so i support any efforts to make sure that our kids dont lose any valuable learning time this year because of this pandemic and i know that thats going to be hard for folks enjoy a summer vacation, but lets be honest under this pandemic im not sure how much vacation is going to happen how safely we can bring back things like camps and so i fully support the decision to start school early, i know nothing is official yet but we have to be prepared for all sorts of possibilities during this pandemic. I want to quickly revisit what you talked about lake mary will there be extra Police Officers out there just to remind people, lets give her a break. We are going to have ambassadors um you know were in oakland we we want to reinforce before we enforce so theyre going to be ambassadors in brightly colored shirts around the lake we also are going to have some large signage assigned in different some some big electronics. Im so were going to be sure that were getting the message out about gives a lake a break and just to kindly remind people what the rules are and that this is for your help this is for the health of your loved ones were not trying to be punitive we care about people we want them to be healthy and again our our officers a rather than giving out tickets theyre giving out thats fantastic. Mayor im always interested in finding out whats the big 13 is talking about those that mayors of the 13 largest cities in california, you meet regularly by phone. What is the commonality between the cities in the state. You know the mayors of california are really tightly knit group and i cant tell you how much i appreciate their especially here in the bay area london breed and sam 3 of us just have a wonderful collaborative relationship and we really would like to see more certainty and uniformity in how we bring back this economy now we are absolutely committed to doing it in a way that is driven by science by data by health. But we know that people want to get back to work and so that is a lot of our focus right now to try and put foward some unified standards that everybody can count on as we move into what the governor has called the next phase of this recovery. That must be interesting theres no playbook for covid19 is all you guys are learning on the curve is or something that has caught you off guard and make your eyes pop. You know it is true, this is not your typical kind of although as the mayor of oakland, i feel like ive had many crises to navigate. I say rather than having my eyes it my heart pops and thats with real appreciation for just the generosity that people are showing the kindness and the fact that people are willing to actually up and their lives to keep each other healthy and safe. That makes my heart pop every day in a good way and thats what we have to keep doing we also have to learn lessons from what were going through right now there are some things i hope we dont bring back as far as Health Disparities by an economy that really take some of our most vulnerable citizens and an abandoned them without benefits for in emergencies like this these are things that we need to change and learn from in this moment. Well as you mentioned earlier, this is a great opportunity to try and remake cities and states and country and the government in dealing with this pandemic mayor, we know you have a very full plate, thank you for spending some time with us this morning. Let me show spend some time with us this morning and were taking a live look outside at the san mateo bridge under a hazy skies things are looking pretty good there. We have the forecast coming up well team sports may be on hold for now, but the bay area Sports Community is doing its part. Stay engaged. Csu east bay high i head basketball coach bryan ruiz said that he knew he wanted to get involved somehow in the fight against covid19 his wife is a nurse. So we decided to create miles for meals. Its an initiative thats open to anyone but the idea is that you run a mile every hour for 24 hours to help raise money for covid19 relief. Or can lee in my my kids were just talking how when she went to her. One day and you know how can we help kind of stars friend deal through social media through our website word of mouth and and the response it has been great. Well so far yeah, 58 riders runners rather are taking part in this with nearly 3,000 thats been raised for the food bank all donations will be going to the Alameda CountyCommunity Food bank. Pretty much into the 50s for right now a little bit of a chilly start that we had enough will be cool into the weekend as we expect a little about some rain showers on saturday. Bay Area Temperatures kind of a hodgepodge of 50s and 60s now at this hour lot of 50s a control a peninsula down south. Meanwhile look at these future cast wind gusts boom by this evening. They tip the tick up a little bit as you can see up to the north bay off to the far east bay, a bit and then subside into the overnight in for saturday morning here. Now we dont talk about this opportunity for rain as we mentioned well show you the projections and that just a bit right now. We take a look at the high temperatures today across the pstate and boy what a difference in the central valley, we dallas 78 bakersfield, 79 sacramento, 81 for fresno they were some 8 degrees or so warmer yesterday 63 monterey and 66 going on for San Francisco swirl but cooler that we were yesterday all over the state. Heres what the projections are for tomorrow and dont wait up for here we go. Yeah theres the green coverage you can see everywhere near water in the east bay shoreline make it a little bit of a wet roads going on too. This so will probably happen by the afternoon hours or so or maybe in the north a little bit in the Morning Hours so that we get past that first wave. Upstream there really isnt much more as High Pressure starts to build into the following weekend. But thats also bringing is very warm temperatures coming our way as well little flavor of summer is come come coming our way. 4 zone forecast today 66 San Francisco with sunset district about 64 also do the city pacifica at 61 Half Moon Bay at 64 2. And the northern end of the peninsula mid 60s at work burlingame about 68 to the south will get some 70s at work your lower 70s about palo alto in redwood city at 72, san jose 75 milpitas at 74 east bay shoreline lower 70s tri valley into the mid 70s double a 74 77 water creek with concord at 79 the lower 70s cover in the east bay shoreline and up to the north a 77 for napa sonoma at 76 and santa rosa at 79 with 60 ish for much of the coast. So it road to drop off temperature wise for the weekend. But then warm back up again next week very quickly. This only gets us up to about wednesday or thursday, and its possible way thursday, some locations may cop at about 90 or so. By the time we get the following weekend. However theres going to be a lot more of that and probably a lot more real estate covered in the post not pop know above 90 degree territory. So get ready for some summer weather coming our way as we get past this Weekend Party backed for sure sounds like it ok, thanks a lot.
