Bottom line that was their memo but that moment i got to as relates to the issue that im grappling with weve been consistent. We have been clear we have been transparent weve been talking about this every day. The closure comes after images on saturday last saturday showing large crowds and beachgoers on newport beach. The governor would not say whether this is a warning to other counties with open beaches. He says he hopes this is just a very temporary shutdown of the beaches in orange county. The California PoliceChiefs Association they released a statement apologizing for the confusion over the closures saying quote we sent out information regarding decisions that were still evolving which was regrettably shared outside of our police chief membership and we apologize for the undue concern that it cost. One of the most vulnerable populations during the pandemic are Senior Citizens thats right and its part of the reason that the city of oakland is launching. The great oakland check in starting tomorrow. Joining us now to talk about that program and other situations in oakland regarding around coronaviruses oakland mayor libby shaft. A good morning tell us a little bit about this program we understand the goals are twofold. Thats first of all we want to check in with people we want. They know someone cares about them just to share that carry voice over the phone is. Idnr lonely during the shelter in place. A second for purpose. Ben set we depend on those funds for the next 10 years to serve. So far in tears can sign up we still need more and its a great way just on first that you care and that there are resources for that. So if you want to get involved. Im sorry, im sorry mayor schapel were having an awful lot of problems trying to get your your connection set up with us so were going take a short break and the were all doing our part by staying at home. That could mean an increase in energy bills. You can save by setting your heat to 68 or lower. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. Or just letting the sun light your home. Stay well and keep it golden. Were back and we wanted reconnect with mayor libby shaft in oakland we had a little bit of a problem with the connection and as an important new program that shes talking about thats aimed at seniors and mayor schaff are you there. Thank you for your patience, im backing this day and were technology. Good we got a working now its the great oakland check in that youre talking about and we wanted to get back to the fact theres a twofold goal with this new program. Thats right most important we want open doors to know that people care about them that there are resources theres free testing theres a new Meal Delivery program for seniors living alone. We want everyone to know that they are cared for that there are resources and that we as a community are going to get to this together but the second reason is we want to remind people to take the census that drives critical funding for the next 10 years to serve our community. So those are the 2 things are going to be talking to people about and we still could use more volunteers so if you want to make calls from the comfort of your home reach out to people tell them how much you care about them and that there is help to get them through this pandemic please contact my office 5. 10 to 3, 8, 3, 1, 4, one or go to bit lee slash great oakland check in. Mayor what are you doing i know that you kind of shutting down certain streets to lift peoples spirits and you can stay in as long as you possibly can that peoples morale seemed to be down a little bit talk about how youre trying to help close the streets to get people out while practicing touch social distance. Thats right our slow Streets Program has been really now we are taking input if you dont want to slow street will listen to that too but this weekend Lauren Bailey 5 new streets across the city go to the citys website oakland ca 0 dot to find out the nearest street by you and please give lake merritt a break lake merritt was too proud of get like a good. Heres a map that shows the orange streets on that are the new ones that are going to be open for the first time this weekend, this is not for block parties people this is for social distanced recreation so spread out law run roller skate bike. Do whatever it takes to get yourself outside for some fresh but due respect social distancing bring a mask with you just oclock covering so that you can stay safe. A mayor speaking about lake merritt over the weekend we saw huge crowds at lake merritt are you getting the sense that people in oakland. After 6 weeks of had enough of a social distancing and age and they just need to get outside. But ive got to just appeal to everyone, what we are doing is working that means we have to keep doing it. So keep that social distance, no gatherings of with people outside your immediate household and do wear a claw mask. It can just be a tshirt it can be a bandanna dont have to buy anything fancy but im going to be down at the lake this asked people to respect these rules and also giving out some free masks from a local designer leslie evers. Yeah we saw Marshawn Lynch out there oakland zone, Marshawn Lynch out there doing his part as well. We all have to do our part we got to keep this going we are saving lives, but we are not out of this yes go somewhere else go to a slow just give the lake a break its the lakes 100 50th birthday she deserves a break would think mayor last night you held a virtual town hall meeting one of the focuses that you had last night was talking about the Governors Task force on job recovery and also putting equity. Into the heart of economic reality this really hits home in oakland. It really does and just like we are focusing on the Racial Disparities in Health Outcomes we have to come back better than we were before and think about whos been hurt most by this shelter in place and pandemic and so as we bring our economy back we need to make sure that our workers are safe and that we are getting people back to work in a way that they are going to be supported if an interaction like this happens again. This is our opportunity to learn lessons and look for those silver because we know that people are really suffering right now in the bay area, the cost of living has been hard and we have so many people out of work we got to get them back but in a way that is going to be safe and healthy. You know, i may id be remiss if i didnt ask you as a person how are you holding up are you getting antsy and hows your family doing. Well thank you for you just saw my tech support of my husband who also working from home weve got 2 young shout out to the amazing educators in the oakland Public Schools that are keeping our kids even through these difficult times i got to say i still love my family in fact that its just a little bit more than i usually get well as the mayor so were in good spirits. Thank you for asking and i hope that everyone else has not given up we have got to keep this going it is working it is saving lives, one other really important thing i want people to know about oakland has expanded eligibility to use our free testing sites you think that you have covid if youre experiencing any symptoms that were you you can get a free test anyone who lives or works in alameda county. You can go to oakland ca dot gov slash testing you do need an appointment so you can get appointment there or if youre in oakland, you can call 3, 1, 1, to get an appointment to use our free testing site insurance not required. I want to ask you this this is a little bit out of your area but im sure youve heard from the Oakland Unified School district about governor fought about starting the school year earlier maybe in july or august what are you hearing now about that possibility happening in oakland. You had a early start date and it is my lane because im not just the mayor of oakland like i said im a mom of 2 Public School it affects me listen we are never going to get these days back in our childrens education, and education mean ever and so i support any efforts to make sure that our kids dont lose any valuable learning time this year because of this pandemic and i know that thats going to be hard for folks enjoy a summer vacation, but lets be honest under this pandemic im not sure how much vacation is going to happen how safely we can bring back things like camps and so i fully support the decision to start school early, i know nothing is official yet but we have to be prepared for all sorts of possibilities during this pandemic. I want to quickly revisit what you talked about lake mary will there be extra Police Officers out there just to remind people, lets give her a break. We are going to have ambassadors um you know were in oakland we we want to reinforce before we enforce so theyre going to be ambassadors in brightly colored shirts around the lake we also are going to have some large signage assigned in different some some big electronic signs so were going to be sure that were getting the message out about gives the lake a break and just to kindly remind people what the rules are and that this is for your help this is for the health of your loved ones were not trying to be punitive we care about people we want them to be healthy. And again our our officers a rather than giving out tickets theyre giving out thats fantastic. Mayor im always interested in finding out whats the big 13 is talking about those that mayors of the 13 largest cities in california, you meet regularly by phone. What is the commonality between the cities in the state. You know the mayors of california are really tightly knit group and i cant tell you how much i appreciate their especially here in the bay area london breed and sam 3 of us just have a wonderful collaborative relationship and we really would like to see more certainty and uniformity in how we bring back this economy now we are absolutely committed to doing it in a way that is driven by science by data by health. But we know that people want to get back to work and so that is a lot of our focus right now to try and put foward some unified standards that everybody can count on as we move into what the governor has called the next phase of this recovery. That must be interesting theres no playbook for covid19 is all you guys are learning on the curve is there something that has caught you off guard and make your eyes pop. You know it is true, this is not your typical kind of although as the mayor of oakland i feel like ive had many crises to navigate. I say rather than having my eyes it my heart pops and thats with real appreciation for just the generosity that people are showing the kindness and the fact that people are willing to actually up and their lives to keep each other healthy and safe. That makes my heart pop every day in a good way and thats what we have to keep doing we also have to learn lessons from what were going through right now there are some things i hope we dont bring back as far as Health Disparities by an economy that really take some of our most vulnerable citizens and an abandoned them without benefits for in emergencies like this these are things that we need to change and learn from in this moment. Well as you mentioned earlier, this is a great opportunity to try and remake cities and states and in dealing with this pandemic mayor, we know you have a very full plate, thank you for spending some time with us this morning. And thank you to your i t staffer get this back on the line please thank your husband for us be well well talk too soon. Is thank you. You had First Responders and nurses and doctors respiratory therapist walking through here being applauded i want to kind of show you whats still going on they are currently steele showing their appreciation right now you see the San FranciscoSheriffs Office here and theyre feeding. Those nurses, those respiratory therapist mills and sell the and those janitors the staff that works here at this Medical Center you now its just incredible to see the outpour of support. We were able to talk to today and they told us what this all means to them. All working together the nice to be with all these people on. The madness isnt done. Yes, San Francisco as a whole never ceases to amaze me i think that thats one thing that were known for everybody comes together and were all here for each other no matter what and i mean this is like that. Another example of how are always you know together and helping each other out and showing our support its amazing to say its the best place to work. I love that the best place to work like they just mentioned now again this took place. This morning from 6. 30 to 7. 30 because that is where they have to change the sheriffs you have a team that is leaving the hospital indian their share of their long 12 hour shifts, some work and you have another teen of starting their shift in today. So what are seen as the staff that are taking a break in getting a bite to eat, but again just like that nurse mention about San Francisco, you know myself in from the bay area. I definitely feel that people come together, especially when communities need help and support and thats exactly what we saw on display here today so marty all city back to you in the study definitely some bay area pride on display there at the hospital. Whats not included in the new initiatives is the promise of testing for residents and staff at longterm care facilities, mike dark with california advocates for nursing home reform says its difficult to get a handle on the problem without testing i think one reason we may not be saying that kind of language yet is because testing is so still so hard to get California PublicHealth Officials released the number of deaths at Nursing Homes earlier this week for the first time. Among Second Harvest partners is Sacred Heart Community services where the number of food boxes going out the door every day is out 400 sq me up from 400 to now 550 boxes and in Sonoma County demand at the Redwood Empire Food Bank is up 50 since the pandemic started and there are sometimes unfortunately not enough food to meet the growing demand. Kron 4 Sarah Stinson is live there in San Francisco with a closeup look at the new werkheiser a good morning. Marty good morning thats right im standing here live on an onramp that is now closed to show you the southbound open theyve been closed for about 8 days now created a bit of an impact on essential workers but nothing like it could have been if we were during normal times right now and so people are driving there you can see theres only 2 lanes open out of 3 the 3rd lane is closed due to safety for the workers on the other side working on the final touches of the north bound lanes of finished that the new southbound one on dec will be open today of course and from here on out on the northbound will open tomorrow remember this bridge deck is 70 years old its a priority project for caltrans to maintain one of the bay areas most heavily traveled corridors this section is right before you take off to 2. 80 or you continue on one oh one south. And usually theres about 240,000 cars driving through a daily but theres been about a 40 to decline in people out there driving because the Standing Order so the Department Took advantage of this and got to work moving their project from july until this project was supposed to be 18 days they created some incentive for the contractor myers and sons and they were able to get it done 10 days early giving them a 10 million bonus. Making sure that we can open this up as quickly as possible lets hear from caltrans Public Information officer about this project. It seems really happy to have this back in service, but we still have another day of work to get northbound open and then some 5 finishing work will happen over the next couple of weeks. The speed has been lowered on alum any right now to 40 Miles Per Hour while we have the construction crews out here. Chp is out here in force is going to be monitoring the speeds obviously traffic is a lot lighter in the bay area right now so its important for people to watch your speeds when they come through here so we can remain safe. And thats exactly right. Ive seen a lot of people speeding on through here you really want to take it slow because not only are you not use what youre seeing out you also want to make sure youre keeping the construction crews safe so they can get this project done and you can take advantage of it if youre an essential worker or running in the central area in this San Francisco area alamein the circle. For now ill send it back to you guys a just say no theyre going to be opening up north and tomorrow at 3 oclock. All right. Its great news for so many commuters, thank you sarah for giving us that a closeup look. Well. Scattered clouds going on for saturday now bay bridge today were off to a good start, although will be cooler were watching out for some winds developing later today. As far as temperatures are concerned a little chilly to get things started that we were from yesterday. Were already now in the upper 50s along the east bay shoreline 58 out to can concord 5748 santa rosa and 54 me well for san jose, getting to those winds now they actually die down until they pick up as we approach of the evening hours. The inland areas that really starts howling pretty good there looks like as we get to tonight. We also have a a. Air quality alert for the Central Valley off to the east a little bit too going on. Even though we do have this wind event there for the sacramento valley. All right take a look at these temperatures now for highs today, 81 fresno bakersfield, 7879 sacramento these reduced from what we saw yesterday Central Coast is pretty much mid 60s. And Santa Barbara that may be kind of a freakish number there 82, the computers popping there because we have the 70s and so cal. The addition to see how this develops though into next week as were looking for much of the heat spell once we get past this little will look like just a bump on the road. For saturday and even into sunday a little bit as far as this little bump delivering maybe a few little showers ok. Give saturday its little do enough to wet the roads. Dirty up your car little bit that will be about already get from it out. So in the models hair settle shot of rain most of it is a Northern California as you can see. After that High Pressure builds and boy it looks like its here to stay on the way into next weekend. It looks like. And temperatures will follow suit without a look at some of the really long range forecast models and thats what were looking for Central Valley to pop in around 100 or so calm next we get so little flavor of summer coming our way across the golden state 66 San Francisco. At the coast will do 64 daly city pacific about 61 northern end of the peninsula in the bay side, mid 60s that that san bruno 66 and heading down south were back to the 70s again, although san mateo 6872 for palo alto in 72 also redwood city more 70s in the south bay forget about the 80s for now at least 77 morgan hill tries to get there 74 milpitas on the east bay shoreline lower 70s, mid 70s for tri valley, dublin, 74 up the Contra Costa County little warmer upper 70s territory here lower 70s still on the east bay shoreline and up to the north bay. The cool spot being bull a home with those winds working but 80 for vacaville 77 napa 76 for sonoma and santa rosa at 79. The 70 forecast has to recover that we talked about i mean over the weekend going to be a bit cooler in the lower 70s at all but up to the upper 80s we go for wednesday thursday meeting and popping about 90 but expect more of that to carry on into the following weekend back to you. All right dave, thanks a lot. For more than a 100 medical teams across the world are racing to develop a Coronavirus VaccineElizabeth Cohen has the very latest on the global efforts. Scientists from around the world have begun testing their experimental covid19 vaccines in people historically its taken years to do human Clinical Trials and get vaccines approved for polio in the 1950s it took about 3 years it took about that long for the rubella vaccine in the 1960s and it took 2 years for months, but no one wants to wait years for a vaccine for the Novel Coronavirus i hope well have a vaccine and were going to. Fast track it like youve never seen before. And there are reasons to be hopeful. Researchers are moving with lightning speed with more than a billion dollars in projected investments already pouring into the effort and the u. S. Food and Drug Administration which will need to approve the vaccine has been moving faster since the pandemic began and the effort is quickly growing as of april 26th, 89 teams internationally were working on vaccines. According to the world health organization. 4 days later the w h o listed a 102 teams working on vaccines. Thats 13 more teams in just 4 days 7 are already in human trials of those 7, 3, are led by teams in the u. S. One is headed by the National Institutes of health outside washington d c. Another by inovio a Biotech Company with research and development in san diego, a 3rd by pharmaceutical giant pfizer headquartered in new york city another is in england at the university of oxford tour in china won in beijing and one in wuhan with the pandemic began human trials began a month and a half ago with the nih first on march 16th pfizer and oxford of the most recent they started human trials. April 23rd who finishes first is anybodys guess thursday at cnns coronavirus town halls doctor Anthony Fauci said getting a vaccine on the market by january that happen vaccine trials are notoriously unpredictable. What might happen is that people months from now and say well you said well have a vaccine in january. I didnt say that i said were going to shoot to be able to have one if were successful at each and every one of these places it might turn out that a promising vaccine doesnt work believe me theres nobody in the world. No matter what they say from what country is going to guarantee you that they can have a safe and effective vaccine at any given time frame. They may be cautiously optimistic about it. But nobodys going to guarantee that or worse that it causes harm. There are a number of situations there. Could go wrong like it may all of a sudden have a safety signal hopes we have a problem that she suggested that to save time the u. S. Can manufacture some vaccines even before they have full results of Clinical Trials, financially risky. But he said a risk its worth it given whats at stake.
