Governor gavin newsom ordered a temporary closure of beaches only in orange countys and there was a mixup between he and a Police Agencies across the state and he was almost immediately criticized for it, republican senator john moore lock released a statement saying quote in part governor newson just doesnt seem to get it. Residents have been responsible the county has not seen the search in its hospitals and the 6 weeks into the shelter in place order. The beach may be the best medicine and this announcement comes after a California Police chiefs memo circulated overnight claiming newsoms administration was set to close all beaches and state parks. The governor would not say whether this is a warning to other counties with open beaches. He says he hopes this is just a very temporary shutdown of the beaches in orange county. The California Police Chiefs Association they released a statement apologizing for the confusion over the closures saying quote we sent out information regarding decisions that were still evolving which was regrettably shared outside of our police chief membership and we apologize for the undue concern that it cost. You had a early start date and it is my lane because im not just the mayor of oakland like i said im a mom of 2 Public School it affects me listen we are never going to get these days back in our childrens education, and education mean ever and so i support any efforts to make sure that our kids dont lose any valuable learning time this year because of this pandemic and i know that thats going to be hard for folks enjoy a summer vacation, but lets be honest under this pandemic im not sure how much vacation is going to happen how safely we can bring back things like camps and so i fully support the decision to start school early, i know nothing is official yet but we have to be prepared for all sorts of possibilities during this pandemic. I want to quickly revisit what you talked about lake mary will there be extra Police Officers out there just to remind people, lets give her a break. We are going to have ambassadors um you know were in oakland we we want to reinforce before we enforce so theyre going to be ambassadors in brightly colored shirts around the lake we also are going to have some large signage assigned in different some some big electronic signs so were going to be sure that were getting the message out about gives the lake a break and just to kindly remind people what the rules are and that this is for your help this is for the health of your loved ones were not trying to be punitive we care about people we want them to be healthy. And again our our officers a rather than giving out tickets theyre giving out thats fantastic. Mayor im always interested in finding out whats the big 13 is talking about those that mayors of the 13 largest cities in california, you meet regularly by phone. What is the commonality between the cities in the state. You know the mayors of california are really tightly knit group and i cant tell you how much i appreciate their especially here in the bay area london breed and sam 3 of us just have a wonderful collaborative relationship and we really would like to see more certainty and uniformity in how we bring back this economy now we are absolutely committed to doing it in a way that is driven by science by data by health. But we know that people want to get back to work and so that is a lot of our focus right now to try and put foward some unified standards that everybody can count on as we move into what the governor has called the next phase of this recovery. That must be interesting theres no playbook for covid19 is all you guys are learning on the curve is there something that has caught you off guard and make your eyes pop. You know it is true, this is not your typical kind of although as the mayor of oakland i feel like ive had many crises to navigate. I say rather than having my eyes it my heart pops and thats with real appreciation for just the generosity that people are showing the kindness and the fact that people are willing to actually up and their lives to keep each other healthy and safe. That makes my heart pop every day in a good way and thats what we have to keep doing we also have to learn lessons from what were going through right now there are some things i hope we dont bring back as far as Health Disparities by an economy that really take some of our most vulnerable citizens and an abandoned them without benefits for in emergencies like this these are things that we need to change and learn from in this moment. You had First Responders and nurses and doctors respiratory therapist walking through here being applauded i want to kind of show you whats still going on they are currently steele showing their appreciation right now you see the San Francisco Sheriffs Office here and theyre feeding. Those nurses, those respiratory therapist mills and sell the and those janitors the staff that works here at this Medical Center you now its just incredible to see the outpour of support. Dallas here today for these First Responders that are out here on the front lines of this covid19 5 you can see then to give some bag and some food there we had a few nurses. We were able to talk to today and they told us what this all means to them. All working together the nice to be with all these people on. The madness isnt done. Yes, San Francisco as a whole never ceases to amaze me i think that thats one thing that were known for everybody comes together and were all here for each other no matter what and i mean this is like that. Another example of how are always you know together and helping each other out and showing our support its amazing to say its the best place to work. I love that the best place to work like they just mentioned now again this took place. This morning from 6. 30 to 7. 30 because that is where they have to change the sheriffs you have a team that is leaving the hospital indian their share of their long 12 hour shifts, some work and you have another teen of starting their shift in today. So what are seen as the staff that are taking a break in getting a bite to eat, but again just like that nurse mention about San Francisco, you know myself in from the bay area. How experts hope these new homes will protect them from covid19 plus the president is putting forward new measures that will help keep the elderly safe and Nursing Homes, well break down his plan. President trump is launching new measures as coronavirus continues to wreak havoc at Nursing Homes in the country marty according to a California Public health data on nearly 40 of the deaths in the state have happened at Skilled Nursing and assisted living facilities kron fours dan thorn now takes a look at some of these new initiatives and whether they go far enough. As Nursing Homes continue to be deadly covid19 hotspots the president announces plans to protect the facilities and their residents among the new initiatives more ppe shipments to medicaid medicare Nursing Homes 81 million in congressional funding to increase inspections. A requirement for Nursing Homes to report information about covid19 cases to the cdc and also requiring Nursing Homes to inform residents and family members about new cases, nursing home worker and Patient Advocates say the last part is crucial get think and that this is a given that it should be obvious that it happened in fact. It is not happening consistently off to the families find out for the first time from the media that virus is spreading in a facility where a loved one is living. Whats not included in the new initiatives is the promise of testing for residents and staff at longterm care facilities, mike dark with california advocates for nursing home reform says its difficult to get a handle on the problem without testing i think one reason we may not be saying that kind of language yet is because testing is so still so hard to get California Public Health Officials released the number of deaths at Nursing Homes earlier this week for the first time. The numbebs show one 3rd of confirmed covid19 deaths have come from these facilities. The numbers, however, could actually be much higher really surprising. Actually how little we know how that many of those numbers actually are. Thursdays Nursing Homes announcement came as President Trump declared may Older Americans month. Only those 60 years or older with Underlying Health issues without covid19 symptoms will be allowed to stay at the mobile homes. Staff members from the citys Homeless Program Operation Dignity and building futures. Theyve identified the first group of people to move in it will be 2 people per trailer until there. Eventually transition to permanent housing and then though wrote a 2 other people to take their place. The folks are hopes that. You know we could have known then what the way is going to people are unemployed, this could be right so having that mindset in dealing with on scene i think you get a different perspective that taken care of each community. The city will provide daily meals and weekly Laundry Services Homeless Outreach team members will check in every day and a paramedic will conduct a Wellness Check on each person 4 times a week. The city says theres enough funding to keep the trailers at Alameda Point for the next 9 months. More more people are out of work and struggling to feed their families and now theres a growing demand for help. From local food banks, the California National guard is helping Second Harvest food bank pack and distribute thousands of boxes of food for people across san mateo and santa clara counties, Holy Trinity Church in san jose is one of more than a 1000 distribution sites. What theyre trying to add here to physical distancing rules and thats adding to the challenge. See for the month of april we think were going to distribute 9 Million Pounds of food before this it was about 5 and a half million per month. That kind of need is only going to continue. Among Second Harvest partners is Sacred Heart Community services where the number of food boxes going out the door every day is out 400 sq me up from 400 to now 550 boxes and in Sonoma County demand at the Redwood Empire Food Bank is up 50 since the pandemic started and there are sometimes unfortunately not enough food to meet the growing demand. And in daly city congresswoman jackie spear helped hand out food at a food bank event that attracted thousands of people Second Harvest food Bank Sponsored the event it was at Jefferson High School in daly city and the cars were backed up for more than a mile with folks waiting to get in. One year ago organizers saw about 800 families every month will now take a look at the traffic there now its about 9,000 families every month, representative spears asking that if anyone can help out they should do what they can to help those in need. Marty good morning thats right im standing here live on an onramp that is now closed to show you the southbound open theyve been closed for about 8 days now created a bit of an impact on essential workers but nothing like it could have been if we were during normal times right now and so people are driving there you can see theres only 2 lanes open out of 3 the 3rd lane is closed due to safety for the workers on the other side working on the final touches of the north bound lanes of finished that the new southbound one on dec will be open today of course and from here on out on the northbound will open tomorrow remember this bridge deck is 70 years old its a priority project for caltrans to maintain one of the bay areas most heavily traveled corridors this section is right before you take off to 2. 80 or you continue on one oh one south. And usually theres about 240,000 cars driving through a daily but theres been about a 40 to decline in people out there driving because the Standing Order so the Department Took advantage of this and got to work moving their project from july until this project was supposed to be 18 days they created some incentive for the contractor myers and sons and they were able to get it done 10 days early giving them a 10 million bonus.
