Good morning, im darya folsom and im James Fletcher lots to cover first off Officials Say the californias early action. Against the coronavirus may have saved thousands of lives and that includes everything from when we shut down schools to when we order people to work from home and if you are not a Central Business to stay at home, so they say dont stop now. Dan simon has the details. As states across the country scramble to increase their supply of n 95 masks, california, the worlds 5th largest economy made a striking move. Governor newsome announcing the state put together a deal to acquire 200 Million Masks a month for health care and frontline workers were dealing at a time where we need to go bold late and we need to meet this moment without playing small ball any longer in Los Angeles County authorities are lifting the restrictions on coronavirus testing. And beginning friday. The city will require residents to wear a mask or covering in supermarkets and other essential businesses and if youre not covering your face. By friday morning the Central Business can refuse you service it follows a series of aggressive moves throughout the state beginning in midmarch that Health Experts say appear to show. The california is bending the curve these measures will be disruptive to day to day life. But there is no need to panic on march 16th, San Francisco became the first city in the country to issue a stay at home order. Bustling neighborhoods quickly became ghost towns 3 days later on march 19th newsome issued a stay at home order for the entire state, california got it right medical experts say as the result of these actions appear to be coming into focus the state has not seen the sharp escalation and cases nor deaths that experts had predicted. Hospitals from both northern to Southern California appear to have had little problem keeping up with the volume of patients is it fair to say that california right now seeing a flattening of the curve. Theres no question about the shoe. Weve weve been reluctant to say it because we didnt want to jinx ourselves and we worried that people would hear that change their behaviors but at some point you have to look at reality and the curve is remarkably doctor Robert Wachter chair of the department of medicine at ucsf credits the states early call. But police other factors, including Many Companies early decision to have employees work from home apple and google and facebook and microsoft as present heres a look at what other people to work from home a 10 days to 2 weeks before even the politicians did going to happen it would be said is that an overreaction but it turned out it was a there was pressure and its one thing to call for drastic socialdistancing its another to actually see people comply. Headed to california in early march, the return of the grand princess cruise ship was an unknown number of sick passengers and crew. Experts speculate it made the crisis see more imminent and real because of the quick action Santa Clara County says the doubling time of cases has gone from 3 days to 2 weeks and perhaps even longer. But Officials Say now is no time to let up that doesnt mean that were not still seeing new cases and new hospitalizations this incident a marathon or maybe even an ultra marathon. While california peers have been quite successful on the mitigation side officials acknowledge they have not been a successful on the testing side. Which means there could potentially be thousands of people out there who have not been diagnosed that said one of the key points here is when you talk to doctors in the state. They will tell you without too much trouble hospitals have been able to manage the patient in love and governor newsome has plans to substantially boost testing in the state by the end of the month. While we may be doing a good job of bending the curve the numbers are still going up and heres a the latest breakdown, we have more than 4,000 confirmed cases here in the bay area along with 46 people having died. In Santa Clara County because of coronavirus San Mateo County reporting 21 deaths, 10 people have died from covid19 in San Francisco, 7 deaths have been reported in Contra Costa County was 16 in Alameda County, 10 deaths. Our in marin county with 2 in both napa and solano counties and one death has been reported in Sonoma County because of the coronavirus now statewide the numbers much larger of course were almost 19,000 cases confirmed right now with more than 500 deaths reported in the globally. The number is getting closer and closer to one 0. 5 million right now. One 0. 4 with the global death count. Beyond 88,000 now. Even as we are seeing result of all of our efforts here in the bay area there is a new outbreak at 2 Nursing Homes in Alameda County 85 people are infected 6 have died so far kron 4 Sarah Stinson has more on that story for us. Now live sarah. James darya outbreaks at 2 separate Nursing Homes and as you just reported their 16 deaths in Alameda County 6 of which happened at just one nursing home. So that puts it in perspective this happened gave way and Care Rehab Center in hayward each and its a scary time for people who have relatives there but a Health Department officials are working hard to make sure its contained and that everyone is taken care of and take a look at your screen we rode out some of the best and most the important details for you 24 Staff Members and 35 residents at the gateway care and rehab center in hayward have tested positive for the coronavirus 6 residents have died each then we go to east bay post acute Health Care Center in Castro Valley theres 17 employees and 9 residents there that have tested positive for the virus known deaths so that facility details very limited right now due to patient privacy, but the Health Department says that providing support and guidance to control the spread within this facility, the Health Department and staff are working together to contain this virus as much as possible yesterday you could see crews from the mortgage going in and out wearing full head to toe protective gear as they work to you know remove those bodies just such a traumatic stage for the entire community, not only are people creating a for their relatives but also theres major concern that there could be a spread locally from these cases will continue to fall this i have reached out to each gateway to see if they have any statement about it or anything they said to call after 9 oclock so be hoping to hear from soon. Reporting live in San Francisco will send it back to you guys in the studio okay well see thank you very much sara meantime were still preparing for an onslaught of patience officials i sonoma state university. As a possible place county Health Officials are considering using the gymnasium to house coronavirus patients with mild to moderate symptoms and the dorms for vulnerable patients with symptoms but who have not been tested yet. And the former home of the Sacramento Kings is turning into a temporary hospital just in case the nut homeless arena can fit up to 400 beds is set to open in 2 weeks to provide overflow in case its needed. Well happening today, the first wave of those stimulus checks will be going out and people receiving the first round will be those that have already given the Bank Account Information to the irs and also Social Security beneficiaries who filed federal tax returns with their direct deposit information. The next wave of checks will go out no later than the week of april 20th and then the 3rd and final round will be physical checks that go out to people who dont have their banking information filed with the irs and again. The irs recommending the best way to make sure you get your money as quick as possible is to have that Bank Account Information filed with them. And heres a breakdown of the kind of money people are going to get it. Individuals can get up to 1200 with couples getting up to 2400 and then an additional 500 per child in the household now the amount of the money you receive will be reduced if you make over 75,000 to 75,000 under youll get the full amount but between 75 99,000 a year. Your stimulus check will be smaller and smaller smaller and that anything above if you make above 99,000. You wont get anything. The threshold by the way will double for couples who file taxes together. A fast food workers considering a dangerous job and people want to be paid and protected accordingly so theyre striking today, yeah kron fours will tran live in hayward now to talk more about that and their concerns well. They will be on strike in less than one hour from now a month mcdonalds on mission boulevard and its open for now bo what we saw on monday could be an indicator of whats going to happen at 9 oclock the workers are either going to show up to work but instead of walking in theyll be on the picket line or theyll just walk off the job because they are still demanding that mcdonalds provides them with gloves and masks and disinfectants and we saw that on monday. Yes if you look at the video you might see them with masks and gloves on, but they say were the ones who provided those items not are boss is and thats why they were very upset especially for a low paying job with high risks these days. Im like what we saw on monday 2 days so this mornings strike. They will be joined by employees from other restaurants, including pie buys yolo co burger king, im sure many other restaurants will join in as this is seems to be a National Trend because weve seen strikes just like the one that we plan to see at 9 oclock in cities like miami. States like tennessee. Tampa orlando. We saw that in san jose, los angeles on sunday actually where at a mcdonalds employee came down with coronavirus and then the workers just walked off the job. Mcdonnell said that they are monitoring the situation that they are sending gloves and masks to locations that they deem or high risk or employees they need it. They clearly the employees are not happy because thats why they plan to walk off the job. We will talk to them when it happens and we will show that show that to you when it does the employees, theyre upset because they said it should not be their jobs if they are not going to get paid more james and area they say at the very least give them some protection while they deal with thousands of workers every day. Yeah, i know will a lot of people who i mean i try to go to the stores few times as possible people who will not go out of their house. And yet these people are going out every day to work all day long and seeing everybody. You know its so funny because i kind of forget about social distancing you walk closer to somebody and you see somebody back if you work here in your the drivethru thats the only thing they cant really back pedal they still have to give you your food and that you have to get their money so there backpedaling involved in that case is well. I also said thousands of workers i meant to say customers but. Thought that showing up to a job and i had huge jobs, a nice cool right your life could be on the line these days yeah, it is and its true all right, thanks a lot less well. Now coming up next if the coronavirus doesnt discriminate and nobody is immune. Why is it hitting africanamericans harder than everybody else were going to ta everybody is affected by the coronavirus whether physically emotionally or financially. But. In many cases africanamericans are suffering the most experts say data on race is still too limited to draw sweeping conclusions. But in some places the virus is infecting and killing African Americans and disproportionately high rates. Us Surgeon General jerome adams says he himself is an example of the problem, hes just 45 years old and has high Blood PressureHeart Disease asthma and is pre diabetic. He says he represents that legacy of growing up poor and black in america, lets talk with our Mental Health expert doctor ruth white about the shes a professor at usc and lives in oakland, a doctor white. We have not seen this disparity in california but elsewhere. The virus has been infecting and killing African Americans them are much higher rate than anybody else so what do you see as the wrote. So im one of the things and theres a phrase that says when america catches a cold black america catches pneumonia and what that really means is that there is a disproportionate 13 on people who are marginalized and experienced discrimination for a really long time days Surgeon General disk hes an example of how their structural kings, click African Americans at high risk your previous segment was talking about workers at mcdonalds, so people are in jobs do not allow them the opportunity to stay at home and as well socially isolated and under and they underlying in sudans out and there could exist in conditions such as what he talked about things like high rates of diabetes high rates of things hyper hypertension as well as people who live in food deserts and are not able to get the kinds helping nutritious food that they need poverty is huge because poverty impacts your ability to social distance you might not have a car you have to take the bus the kinds of jobs, you have put you in harms way youre also less acts this able to Health Services because of lower rates of health African Americans who live in states where there hasnt been Medicaid Expansion means that there are people that dont have many kids so theyre less likely to get insured also the stress of racism, theres a term called weathering because people are and what i talk about stress all the time they be being discriminated systematically your whole life puts your body under a certain level of stress that others dont normally have each and lastly and there i mean other factors but the last one that i want to talk about is distressed of a Health System in terms of a historical relationships and that africanamericans of high with the Health System in terms of trusting the way that people diagnose or treat and so a lot of African Americans might be going to the doctor knew later than others because of all the systematic factors as well as being at risk because of these factors so whole saying you could see it you could add the stuff youre talking about. Is longstanding. Ingrained been happening forever been affecting the community forever. So were just waking up oh my gosh like you know Congress Acting like well weve got a weve got a look into this. And maybe maybe its taking this horrible thing with so many people dying at this horribly alarming rate. For some of this to start to change because everything you said there is not news. It is there is actually a office of Minority Health so at the department of health and Human Services because these to Health Disparities have been noted for decades, i worked and some of this research when i was a grad student at berkeley sure 5 years ago now so you know we we know that people who are discriminated against and are living at the margins of society are always going to harder theyre going to feel the impact of any negative more than other people the same thing happened in katrina or any other kind disaster whether natural that we actually consider pandemics to under the cover of a national to a Natural Disaster so nearly as you say highlight the the fact that African Americans have already a lower Health Status and so this kind of. Illness is going impact and higher rate than whites. Okay, so if all of this doesnt move you to help right the want to help you want to help everybody. Theres another reason to help and that is that studies have shown that helping other people no matter how you do it right actually helps the person giving and the person doing be happier have been aligned better Mental Health, how does that work with the connection there. Well, theres a term called helpers high and it really has to do with how helping others impacts our brain so it turns out that the places in the brain that light up for food and thanks actually light up when you help oxytocin has also been shown to be released when you help people also its a way to distract from whats going on with you and you feel as if youre able to do something for someone just makes you feel good. Now while were supposed to socially distance though its hard to be out there and socially connected help in that way. So what are other ways that you could help people without getting near them. Money by the way and without a ton of money by the say another because its easy just to throw money at a problem if you have money and its not easy if you dont so lets talk about other things. Yes, so you can do things like dont a black soul and theres been a i have a friend les sickle cell and he was saying that he was at risk of not getting like transfusion with what he needed because there has been a shortage of some kinds of blood products so thats a great way be able to help others delivering meals so there are a lot of people who were shot in meals on wheels is is bringing food you can also volunteer at a food bank. So you know helping to whatever it is at in the back end of the west you can also do checks on your neighbors or a Nonprofit Organization you can also make hygiene kits for the homeless so if youre somebody and when i used to travel a lot ice to keep the little lotions and soaps or whatever and you can dont know donate those nonprofits will serve homeless and so theres and you can someone running errands you can volunteer and a crisis line. So theres lots of things that you can do if you have time more have concerns that will get you out of you know how bad you feel because youre able to out somebody else and then and then theres that really simple thing. Just the kind you even this a kind actually helps you to write, yes and you know when you i i would say when you kill people with kindness you i save yourself because theyre makes you feel good. It makes us all feel better because if youre kind to someone else to more likely to be kind to you and right now the world needs all the kindness we can get as i say were in this together were going to get out of this together and its really important that we show each other im the love that humans can have for each thank you so much. Doctor ruth white appreciate joining us this morning as always makes me feel a little thank you. All right and we do want to tell you doctor white has a book its called distress in 10 minutes or less the stress man and a workbook that is a great place to start if youre wondering its a little overwhelming and how can i. Just chill out and feel better. I just pick up her book well be right back. Mrs. Walker. Michael vasquez come over here. Ive heard such good things about you, your company. Well, i wouldnt have done any of it without you. Without this place. This is for you. Michael, you didnt have to. And, were going to need some help with the rest. Youve worked so hard to achieve so much. Perhaps its time to partner with someone who knows you and your business well enough to understand what your wealth is really for. Loweto supportitted frontline workers, and our more than 300,000 dedicated associates. Thank you for everything youre doing. And were back at 8. 30 new this morning passengers who were on board that grand princess cruise ship during the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak of now filed a lawsuit against the cruise line cover Sarah Stinson is live with the details on what they want sarah. Thats a group of 9 people who were aboard the grand princess cruise ships are all from Northern California and they filed this a class action injury lawsuit and a federal court in San Francisco yesterday theyre claiming that they should get some caught compensation for not only what they went through but also for being exposed and theyre claiming that the cruise did in fact they were in fact negligent and the they are alleging that they were exposed to the coronavirus as a result of this gross negligence on behalf of the company that operates this cruise line of the complaint notes that before the trip from San Francisco to hawaii at least one passenger on the princess cruise was reporting symptoms of the coronavirus but despite that cash went on with their voyage. The company thats what the lawsuit states. The company did later on march 5th, it was discovered that 19 crew members and 2 men and 2 passengers tested positive for the coronavirus on the grand princess cruise ship since then its been reported that over a 100 people have tested positive and 2 passengers and one crew member has died from the coronavirus in a statement from the attorney representing the passengers, it said carnival and Princess Cruise Lines negligently put thousands of passengers at risk of serious harm which risk will continue for some time the lawsuit seeks compensation for the plaintiffs and other passengers harmed in this ordeal. This isnt the only lawsuit is being filed theres over a dozen other ones, most of them being filed in los angeles this being the first filed in San Francisco that we know still no statement from the cruise line it no reaction from them about this lawsuit filed will have to continue to fall this see how it develops when reporting live in San Francisco send it back to those a cruise. Passengers not the only ones who want money Small Business owners are trying to get their money and really for coronavirus losses that theyve had in the form of loans emergency loans so they can stay afloat congress has approved this but its a nightmare to try to get it theres been computer glitches all kinds of confusion and big time delays too peninsula, congresswoman jackie spear says that what happened is the demand has been way above what congress and the treasury thought it would be and now theyre figuring how to fix the current problem and inject billions more to improve. It to double or triple the amount of money we put in to that fund the folks in the administration are working around the top with the lenders of all sizes to make sure that those issues are resolved. I dont hold your breath, but help is on the way treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin has already requested 250 billion additional dollars and congress is supposed to consider that and take a vote on it today. Kron fours lot rob fladeboe talked with some bay area Business Owners who in the meantime though are having a lot of trouble with these loans. Like hundreds of other Small Businesses across the region, san joses plateau builders has shut down. Its 15 employees are out of work and running out of money fast says owner jacob round so he its really hard worse used to produce a and working in. Now we all the stress of making mortgages and rance brown tells me he approached his Longtime Bank wells fargo for a loan under the new federal Paycheck Protection Program. But wasnt even allowed to submit an application was no go wells fargo basically said. Were not sure when its going to get opened up, you know maybe later, but right now were not taking applications is participation in the ppe program has been limited because of sanctions imposed due to past rule breaking. But today the Federal Reserve temporarily lifted those restrictions in a statement wells fargo said it is looking forward to expanding relief to many more Small Businesses and nonprofits again jacob brown im a client will start a former 33 years had this business for many years. And im im just worried about the families that now employ them not able to play right now. And also for myself the Paycheck Protection Program is supposed to be a lifeline for plateau builders and other Small Businesses but the red tape has people like jacob round feeling like theyre being pushed to the back of the line just feel in secure. I just feel horrible. And you know these big institutions. I would assume would be there for us on the right now were going to try with different lenders just because of the process not because of being eligible not be being turned down is just not even getting chance to process a lot so san jose rob fladeboe kron 4 news. Released documents show the National Stockpile is nearly out of those and 95 masks along with surgical masks face shields all those other supplies that are desperately needed right now to protect our front line medical workers as they treat coronavirus patients. According to the documents that were released by the House Oversight committee about 90 of all personal protective equipment in the stockpile have already been distributed to state and local governments. The remaining 10 is being withheld and placed in reserve for federal workers should they need them. House democrats say the Trump Administration has now left states to fend for themselves competing with each other. Santa clara county is the hardest hit part of the bay area from covid19 and officials there have issued a new order requiring entities and individuals to disclose and report if they have large in the tories of ppe that includes Hand Sanitizers close. Those n 95 mask things that hospital workers with need the county the only wants to hear from people who have a large quantity that they could potentially. Contribute were talking if you have hundreds or thousands of certain things all the reporting will be done via an online survey, its one time one time disclosure in to help the countys public Health Department just sort of get a better idea of what kind of supplies exist within the community as they plan for a potential hospital search. Our Health Care Workers and First Responders have been battling this crisis for more than 2 months now. We owe them a debt of gratitude. We owe them the equipment needed. To work safely to protect us. This order is another opportunity for the business community. The public and the county to come together. Well the new order comes as the county reports shelterinplace orders apparently working in terms of slowing at least the spread of covid19 which is providing a little additional time for the Health Care System to prepare for any surge that may still come. The National Stockpile of equipment is nearly empty as you said james so private businesses are trying to fill the gap kron fours morning kelly takes a look at a Maritime Company in the north bay thats pitching in. There are completely overwhelmed after hearing from a doctor in new orleans about the dire conditions, theyre facing reason bradley stop making underwater mapping equipment and sausalito shop and switched over to making face shields instead laser cut concern because scientists like 4 counties that you can form thing put together it doesnt use any rubber bands or latex trucks so we started counting the years as just a you know the person that we can do to make a big difference. So far theyve cut a few 100 samples and given them away free to local medical workers like these nurses at Sutter Health of otto and sent others to hospitals across the country now theyre trying to soar supplies to make more we got contacts all over the by 5, 6, from for all just like to call him a like there were out a and b is going to be weeks or months Football Game or you probably has also been working on a prototype for disposable cardboard positive air pressure respirator we started making this with the idea knocking around now and im so were were designing with the concerns of using things that are just readily available. A Facebook Group has been launched by several maritime businesses in the marine ship area of sausalito to help find the funding and materials needed to keep production moving jonelle kalman who has been organizing the effort says this echoes back to what happened at this waterfront during world war 2 all the big battle ships here is also for the civic center. So theres a history of innovation and creativity but also of and you know rising up in time the more to really be able to Serve Community but also the country this network of maritime businesses says there are more solutions in the works. And theyre committed to doing anything they can to help with this shortage of personal protective equipment morning kelly kron 4 news. The 38 is the time you set by the way also jumping in on the effort to protect Health Care Workers. In these say their cases of coronavirus of the santa rita jail in Alameda County 11 inmates have tested positive in the last 4 days and right now theyre trying to figure out. And an example that derrick bell may 9 is going to be released from jail hes the defendant ago ship warehouse fire trial. The 45 right now i want to check out the forecast skin to be a little later in the morning so things might be a little bit warmer. And waited and waited for my like yesterday we didnt know a job what are we looking at. That cloud cover keeps it cool today we are going to be looking at another cool one kind of like yesterday. So if you do have plans on a walk this afternoon just keep the jacket on hand were pretty much repeating yesterday actually you look outside from timber on right here shows a black cloud cover that doesnt want to budge spent hanging out all morning at best temperatures have been hanging out in the same old range they have been since the start of the morning oakland 57 degrees currently been there all morning so far napa delay, ho and cnn egypt 53 San Francisco at 54 degrees now this highpressure ridge to our west. Its trying to build in but this is a stubborn low sitting to our south right now its continuing to result in rain and thunderstorms for central and Southern California. Well in the meantime we may not be tapping into that here in the bay area we are seeing the same cloud cover associated with the system. So thats why weve had these cloudy skies and a kind of the muggy feel the past couple of days is because this has been a moist system has a little lot of sunshine through we will see a few more sprinkles up in the upper elevations of the bay area today like the mountains above san jose, the bulk of the bay area remain stride.
