The state youre on this weekend if youre heading down south watch out for that rain temperatures in the 50s for most of the bay right now look at oakland nearing 60 degrees already and just take a look at these daytime highs later today, San Francisco up to 70 oakland 73 while san jose a warm 74. Rebecca all right, thank you john and that its definitely friday light. Around the bay area were really seeing its across all the bridges and including the bay bridge look at the toll plaza approach, nice and thin here for you if youre going to be heading into San Francisco shortly enjoy all the sunshine and the light traffic only 10 minutes across the upper deck to get to the fremont street exit. The san mateo bridge looking at the right hand side, your screen. We still have a stall on the right hand shoulder there, but its not causing any problems. No delays traffic is at the limits and under 15 minutes to get over to the peninsula and out of the east bay. Checking a drive times are throughout the bay area 17 minutes on westbound for from antioch to concord and it looks good from and not 60 minutes and this is really good the nimitz freeway only 31 minutes as you travel from san leandro on south atv into milpitas and 32 minutes from downtown san jose into palo alto james all right. Thank you. Rebecca. To our breaking news story from overnight a Good Samaritan was hit and killed on south by want a southbound 1, 1, in san mateo they were trying to help another driver kron 4 Sarah Stinson live there now to let us know what happened sarah. James this is now being investigated as a hit and run i just confirmed with chp the 31 yearold man the Good Samaritan youre talking about he was hit by a driver and that person took off this man, hes got his car to help a woman who crashed in the Center Divide for his flashers on and then he was hit by a driver and that person just took off so theyre still looking for that person as we speak take a look at this video from the scene and we know they know that the person took off because of the witnesses that remained on scene chp says they got the first call about this is so low car crash involving a sigh on just before 2 in the morning this morning and near the 3rd avenue exit before they arrived on scene the Good Samaritan saw the woman in her mangled syon and you know hes trying to help out so he got out of his car and when to help her right in the middle of those southbound lanes thats when he was hit and killed by another driver who took off. The people witnesses and they stayed on scene they told chp described the car that hit and run driver was a driving as a green or blue box shaped suv possibly a subaru the driver of the scion has been taken to this to stanford with injuries. So that person still recovering 4 cars were involved in this crash in total chp in redwood city are now looking for the hit and run driver and while they do that their message to everybody at home. Chp advises you to keep going on for chilean know you want to help out, but they said its just not safe to do so its best to just call 911 immediately chp can get out there and help that person. Theyre going to be continuing to search for this the standby to kron 4 dot com as we continue to follow this for now live in san mateo Sarah Stinson kron 4 news okay. Thank you very much sara the other big story were following this morning. The fact that in just a few hours from now are hoping that oakland city leaders will speak to the public and shed a little more light on to their decision to fire police chief anne kirkpatrick. That decision to fire her was unanimous between the mayor and the members of the Police Commission kron fours will tran live in oakland right now with the very latest will this came as a surprise to a lot of people. It was a bombshell came out of nowhere because there wasnt something that you can point to this said ok this. Leads to this instead it was just years in the making but even then nobody knew coming into last nights meeting. That the Police Commission would pull the mayors side have a closed door meeting and then come to the decision to fire and kirkpatrick shed been on the job for 3 years she made history as opens First Female Police chief she came 3 years ago after a scandal that rocked not just the Oakland Police department but many other Bay Area Police departments involving a teenage girl having with a lot of Police Officers that she was actually brought in to clean up the mess instead during her time there was a lot of animosity between the Police Commission and her. 2 years ago there was a man who was armed at the time, but he was sleeping between 2 homes 5 Police Officers showed up theres been a lot of dispute whether or not they were right. Rightfully so to open fire on this man. Police Commission Many in the community thought that the very least these officers should have been fired, but instead kirkpatrick according to them protected. These Police Officers so that kind of muddy the waters and all of a sudden out of nowhere nobody saw it coming. They made the swift sudden decision to fire her we got a chance actually last night to track down the Police Commission and oakland mayor libby shaft heres theres heres why they decided to move on it. There wasnt enough. Leadership and so that we needed new leadership for oakland, its my duty as the mayor to recognize the role and authority of this commission. And also to recognize when the trust between the Police Commission and the police chief has become irrevocably broken. Will prevent this city from moving forward. It stars moving forward we do know now that open mayor libby schaaf has appointed the interim police chief excuse me the assistant police chief to be the interim police chief a technically kirkpatrick is still on the job because either today or the next couple of days. She has a decision to make whether or not to sign her termination letter and by doing that basically agrees to the decision but she agrees to it not in her heart but that opens up the vault so to speak that shes entitled to about 270,000 a severance as well as what she was getting paid for her job so right now taxpayers in oakland could be on the hook for that as they continue to search for another police chief, the 5th one in the last 3 years back to you. All right, thank you very much well. Well the local Police Officers association has released a statement regarding kirkpatrick firing and you can see a portion of it here on your screen. It reads in part quote the Oakland PoliceOfficers Association stands ready to work with whomever our next chief of police is despite the changes at the top of the department Oakland Police officers continue to come to work every day and serve our residents in californias most crime challenged city. Another big story that were following this morning a coronavirus patient is now being treated in San Francisco. That person was among those infected on the diamond princess cruise ship in japan they were quarantined for a bit at Travis Air Force base but now theyre at a San Francisco hospital being treated the hospital staff by the way taking all precautions necessary to protect both the patient and its staff. Theyre not releasing the name of the hospital they want to protect the patients privacy. The 2 patients that were previously hospitalized in San Francisco have been discharged now there are no longer in the city can no longer and any threat of being infected. And the first confirmed patient in santa clara to has also made a full recovery. That man was isolated at home and monitored by Public Health staff he tested positive for coronavirus after returning from wuhan china last month. Health Officials Say he never got sick enough though to be hospitalized. More than a 115 people ended their 2 week quarantine at Travis Air Force base in fairfield as well they were all part of the evacuation from wuhan china. They were split between travis and also the Marine Corps Air station miramar in san diego. This is video of one of the buses, leaving Travis Air Force base. The evacuees have been living there at the military base since flying out of wuhan china all 53 at travis complete their quarantine and they are now medically cleared to leave and go back home to family and friends. Much different story though in mainland china. So far 889 new cases have been counted and a 118 deaths have been attributed to coronavirus on wednesday. Those numbers bring the total now to over 75,400 infections worldwide and 2200 deaths. To the south bay an of wuhan natives who now live in san jose are banding together to send medical supplies to wuhan china and some nearby cities. The nonprofit wuhan united formed about a month ago, this is actually a pictures of their first shipment to on Union Hospital well now theyre on to their 8th shipment to china equipped with over a Million Masks and isolation gowns and gloves. We talk to the founder of the nonprofit who was close to tears when talking about hunch i know place where he was born and raised. Is locked know what it can go out and go you. The citys a sacrificing for the whole country from the war. Nobody has ever seen consideration in World History and history of mankind, you know. Studio of prof Million People call la wuhan united sent over 2 million supply so far theyve even got their hands on half a million of those and 95 masks which are in. They demand right now. To the north bay now where the search for a missing palo alto couple is now in. In the south bay and aggressive Mountain Lion that attacked a little girl last sunday has been found it happened at the Rancho San Antonio county park in Santa Clara County wildlife officials caught the female mount line took it in. Took some dna sampling it confirmed that it was the very same outline that attack that little girl. The Mountain Lion has since been humanely euthanized to protect the public. The 6 yearold girl is recovering from minor injuries. He suffered in that attack. Morning news a high school in the east bay is shut down after a cancer causing chemical is found on campus were going to have emotional reaction. From some of the concerned parents at a board meeting. Im Trevor Shirley in washington unemployment numbers are and some of the lowest levels in a decade. But some people say just because more americans are working doesnt mean theyre making enough to live on. Ive got that story coming up. And outside today we are looking at sunshine here in the bay while areas further to the south are starting to see a little bit of rainfall. Something that well see a lot more of on into tomorrow your forecast is to come. All right speaking of all that sunshine john look at this shot the bay bridge toll plaza approach light traffic and a lot of sun to enjoy getting in the San Francisco well were back here 9. 15 john trouble keeping an eye on the forecast for today and the weekend and beyond. Looking pretty good, yeah looks feels like spring break. Thats next month it if it was this next upcoming we could be great weather for it. Were start and friday with some 70s for your daytime highs across the bay area east bay conditions, nice and sunny berkeley looking out to San Francisco sitting under of sunshine this morning there was definitely some cloud cover overhead earlier on that has since cleared out at times today you will see clouds rolling back and so do expect that now this is or what to our south right here with areas of Central California having seen just a couple of sprinkles. Youre also looking at just a little bit of snowfall skirting the very southern Sierra Nevada just an introduction to what will be some rainfall this weekend for central and southern parts of the state its going to be light stuff, but an a for to get roadways wet. If you are heading further south bay area and lake tahoe remaining dry while the southern sierra does see some needed snowfall as well the southern part of the state looking at some rainfall. We are going to see those showers clearing out by sunday bay area remains dry during this time and advancing to the last week of february which is this upcoming week looks like were going to have a pretty dry finish to the month now that could make for hes a historically dry february. But one bit of good news that we are seeing in longrange forecasts is the potential this is still a ways off for a here of some rainfall the start off march just around the corner the following sunday, not this upcoming one, but the one of the following weekend. So keep your fingers crossed for that upper 60s to low 70s in San Francisco and or other coastal areas of the bay today while most of the rest of us in the bay a little further away from the pacific will be seeing daytime highs well into the 70s this warmer than we should be even warmer than our warm day yesterday was milpitas in san jose 74 for your highs well, dublin at 73 degrees today. Temperatures in richmond in oakland at 73 for your highs well, the north bay, some of our warmest of numbers. Sonoma napa on over to santa rosa in petaluma 75. Youre look ahead at the next 7 days looking dry tomorrow and sunday a little cooler then todays abnormally warm temperatures. Rebecca all right. Thank you jon i am tracking in accident in the east bay. It is a blocking the right lane. This is northbound 6. 80 right at stone valley road coming out of the danville area and heading into alamo. It is going to be a little bit slow in fact traffic slows all the way as far south as san ramon trying to get to the scene of the crash. So that right lane is going to be a blocked by fire crews involving injuries census chp is telling us so expect a little bit of a delay there and so crews can clear it. But good news here if youre getting into San Francisco. Anytime soon its looking really great lightly traveled were backed up just past the over crossing look at that drive time only 10 minutes across the upper deck into San Francisco. Your west, a 92 ryan looking a pretty good theyre finally trying to get that stall out of the waves on the right hand shoulder there you can see behind that a large truck, it wasnt causing any problems traffic still at the limit and your drive time 14 minutes over to san mateo james all right, thank you very much rebecca, a new report suggests almost half of working americans are struggling to support themselves. And their families washington dc correspondent Trevor Shirley takes a closer look. The Trump Administration often points to economic strength through strong unemployment numbers, currently around 3. 5 . A Record Number of Young Americans are now employed, but according to a new study by the brookings institution, 44 of workers between 1864 years old. Only make about 18,000 a year. Thats about 10 bucks an hour. So the unemployment numbers really important but its not the whole story. Just have to look at wages, martha ross one of the studys authors says those wages often arent enough to live on especially for millions of Service Sector workers. We have a lot of retail clerks we have a lot of janitors a lot of house keepers we have a lot of jobs that dont pay very much. The study says part of the solution includes more education and skill building along with employers paying more i think a higher minimum wage is part of it but some Like Heritage Foundation economist Romina Bhatia says that could actually hurt workers but its going to hurt minorities less educated workers younger workers who are already seeing this today. She says a broader approach is needed. But we also need to look at where are the barriers that are keeping people from moving into higher earning positions ross as any solution should include the government and private sector i think it has to be a partnership. Reporting in washington, im Trevor Shirley. To one of our big stories this morning out of the east bay where a high school in oakland is shut down until further notice after a cancer causing chemical was found on site. So baby way or you can hear the frustration in the voices of those parents, theres they were talking to School Leaders during a special meeting to discuss the chemical that was found on the grounds of climate high school. Crews found that chemical while they were removing a fuel tank which is next to the schools tennis courts. The school will have to be closed now till at least through early next week as they continue to monitor the air quality. Our concern is that there realized tc that that seeped through the ground and through our floors into the building in the air. And so if there are elevated levels of that then we can have school here. School officials confirm the chemical did not originate on School Grounds in fact it was the state cleaning up a handful of contaminated sites less than a mile away that turned up a lot of this in fact all those sites turns out are contaminated with that same chemical. Well concerned parents tell us that they want a proper response to this toxic chemical being found on School Grounds and in the ground water proper stance or has their reaction. Parents and neighbors voiced their concerns about the toxic chemical found in the ground water and muck linemans high school. The Taylor MemorialMethodist Church getting heated as people felt they were not getting answers our whole community, our whole School Environment has been traumatized by cancer by toxins in a year Anthony Mcneil is a former employee at the high school. He says school and county officials are simply relying on words instead of showing concrete measurements i need to see something more tangible to say this is where the level were at and now because of what weve done. In this press is this is where theyre at now officials maintain that adequate testing is being done and thats why theyve closed the school for now their concern is making sure tce vapors have not gotten into the buildings. Others argue students and People Living in the area should be tested as well though theres no indication right now that theres any up residence of this chemical in the air we just dont know we have to test for we know that ground water, not the drinking water. And we dont know about about the air. One woman who lives near the school says shes worried this has been happening for some time and many students and residents could be at risk as all that. You know, im just concerned about the kids get into it and then if they can School Company in age. We may look land that we want ask old reporting in oakland, dan thorn kron 4 news. The School District also dollars is the campus does have a history of highprofile cases of cancer including 2 graduates of a climate high school daryl atkins died from leukemia back in 2017 just a month or after graduating and then this past fall a 2018 graduate, Raymond Sanders died of bone cancer. That didnt turn up until he was playing football at Laney College he broke his leg and thats what doctors discovered the cancer at this point theres no definitive link between these deaths and the discovery of the chemical on the climb as high School Grounds, but thats certainly something that people will be looking into. The chemical found in the ground water is called try claure ethylene its also known as tce for short, its colorless its a liquid and its used to produce large volumes of commercial use things like chemicals that are used in refrigerants and also as a solvent to remove grease from metal parts studies show that long time exposure to tce can cause an increased risk of cancer. Layoffs are looming for San Francisco schools because of a major budget shortfall district Staff Members and teachers of one of us to horace mann received an email from their superintendent warning them about these drastic cuts to the budget superintendent doctor Vincent Matthews goes on to say in the email that they have depleted their reserves and that employee cuts will have to be made now because of a million budget shortfall. Im horrified. We need more teachers, more resources more money not less not less of everything in this city where we pay so much in property tax how in the world are they cutting the budgets for school really the message thats being sent. Is that the district is not prioritizing the people who are on the front line so were doing the best we can here. Why is the money why where did the money go. Welcome back 9. 45 on this friday morning feeling good out there already 60 degrees in San Francisco for your current temperature and look at all that sunshine overhead really nice way to kick off the day a few clouds sitting over san jose but conditions are rather bright despite those clouds that you can see out in the distance from berkeley which is also sitting under some bright skies right now temperatures are rising quickly under the sunshine that has reappeared for most of the bay you can see some of those clouds sitting over san jose here in stormtracker 4. But if you zoom out thats just the start of a cloudy and the rainy forecast for the weekend. Not for us in the bay but for central and southern parts of the state. These areas will look at some light showers right along the coastline tonight and the most widespread of rainfall activity on through the day tomorrow to expect snow in the southern sierra the wet roadways if youre heading south in the state, but if youre staying here in the bay some pretty dry conditions and some really nice conditions on through the weekend. Today certainly starting the weekend off on a nice no upper 60s to low 70s in San Francisco and a rather coastal areas 70s elsewhere in the bay with millbrae and burlingame each in the low 70s. Weve got some mid 70s, popping up for areas like the south bay. Few spots in the east bay as well like hayward at 74 very comfortable weather. Berkeley on over to concord walnut creek solid 70s north bay bringing some of our warmest of temperatures mid 70s and sonoma Napa Santa Rosa and petaluma tomorrow and sunday definitely not as warm as today, but still just as dry and even on the clear side of things next week looks to be dry to close out february with some dry conditions through the last week of the month. Rebecca all right, thank you john what were seeing a whole lot of sunshine around the bay area like john was just talking about making those temperatures start to climb. Its going to be a beautiful drive into San Francisco and traffic not too bad either thats up 2 of the over crossing, thats if youre paying with cash and say youre going to be a 12 minute trip across of the upper deck into San Francisco. As we wrap up this 9 oclock hour. Things look really good here the san mateo bridge moving well lightly traveled 15 minutes from a the macarthur or from rather the hayward area and the nimitz freeway trying to get across the flat section looks good. No issues on the high rise and connecting with 1, 1, in foster city. Its going to be problem free. So far very light here at the richmond sandra fell bridge 8 minutes getting up to the north bay and connecting with one to one and speaking of one oh one is look too great all morning long coming out of the north bay, this is your commute south one of them looks good to moran and its problem free in the San Francisco for a total drive time. 21 minutes james all right rebecca, thank you very much ny 48 is the time and as we celebrate black History Month were looking at African American arts here in the bay area from a well known fine arts gallery in oakland to the museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco kron fours pam moore reports.
