Didnt really didnt have an idea of how massive him look at how those winds are really whipping in fact at one point closing down for ive the 5 and the 2. 10 freeway you see where i 5 disappears at the top of the screen. Its that ridge line those sets of mountains there that are on fire this morning in that stretch of 5 shut down which means all traffic getting off of of the the great fine are trying to head that direction cant go and thats an area that youre familiar with in the bay or if its going to disneyland and you come out of the great bright bind right when you come out, the valley, safernando valley and then theres a burbank i and thats thats the whole area. Thats on fire right now is up in the hills there, but also coming way down to Populated Areas and the embers have been blowing in starting homes on fire that are you know of miles away from the actual wildfires burning and its been those winds thats been the real culprit in pushing this fire to spread as fast as it has and the firefighters are on basically on the back foot right now trying to catch up and get some kind of contained at last check it was 0 containment so theyre windsor away stronger today than ours were yesterday when we peak in now our winds have backed off john yeah exactly the winds that we saw yesterday having worked their way further to the south thats left us with a calm forecast for the day today only one red flag warning remaining for the bay area in lake and colusa counties. You look at Southern California and its much different with winds. Having remained very much so strong all throughout the evening now into this morning and were seeing gusts a stronger across the board than what we did see in the bay area yesterday and as james and ari were talking about thats why this wildfire such a threat and has spread so rapidly red flag warnings in la down to san diego up into the kern county mountains and eventually up into the southern sierra. So this is where your fire danger is at its highest today. Well, those of us in the bay look at calm conditions overall as we work our way into the weekend. This a Good Opportunity for us to get back to normal after so many power outages, still many experiencing lack of power this morning as youre getting out there today temperatures a bit warmer. So hoping power gets restored a very quickly because it will be a warm afternoon highs back up into the 80s for in london, even bayside areas, ive got the rest your forecast for the weekend. Still ahead, robin. So quite slow heading into San Francisco this morning, youre back up at the bay bridge toll plaza is holding at the bottom of the maze so from the bottom of the base through the tolls up the incline and on to the suspension youre going to be dealing with a lot of often on slowing. This is not bad were averaging 17 minutes to make it in and i have not found any hot spots are major alerts and you have some slow spots highway for just under 30 minutes antioch to concord and the nimitz recovering from some crashes in fremont were almost up to 40 minutes from to 38 to 37, more slow downs coming up. And right now were taking a look at the power back on in various counties and of the different levels. It looks like you know p gs making progress. Except for a couple of pockets up in the north bay, especially in sonoma and napa and remember these are the areas the lost power for so theyve gone youngest now without getting power, yeah, and its tough because its lot of the terrain there so rugged that is going to take genie a little while longer to inspect all the lines and get that power restored, but look at Sonoma County only 46 restore pre of the rest of the bay area. Everybody else seems to be like 5018 95 restored, yeah and so county days are wearing on kron fours christine the teachers live in santa rosa. Where its got to be wearing with patients is where it and to say the least. To say the least each person ive spoken with so far this morning since ive been out here has really echo that same sentiment that theyve been without power. 4 days and its just cause a lot of chaos. Now im actually here in a parki g lot near a walgreens and they actually have had a generator out here, the passing day because they wanted to Still Service their customers obviously make some money as well, but you can really see how spt is irom where im standing. Theyve of course use a generator but right here this is actually a mcdonnells that is a mcdonalding entire shopping center. That is still completely blacked out from the pack i did no just on the other side of sonoma highway weve got 2 sets of apartment complexes one with power and one without so theres really no rhyme or reason in regards to where the power is and where it is. And where it is and where its not and also really keep in mind. The fact if youre driving through , ot se if you could i hear that. But there were just cars honking at each other right here office noma boulevard i him a highway in mission boulevard because a lot of the street lights are still closed off and again really depends on where you are just about every other block traffic lights and street lights and that are not functioning which means that you really got to be careful on the road and i actually just got done speaking with actually a crime for viewer, who told me that is has been mad chaos on the road to take a listen to what he had to say. Reckless crazy people running that reading through the intersections and not paying attention or do it you got to be extra cautious got to be aware was around in half after going and. Pretty much you can spot. It and you know he and a that quote a little bit on the lighter side of things but he did say that he really thinks that this whole entire power power outage has him back in santa rosa, so deeply just because with how many people could not go to work and just with all the craziness on the road. Its really added an element of chaos here in a city thats normally much more calm. Now i do want to give you guys has some information on schools with power outages, the only school now now in the Unified School District up here in santa rosa. That does not have school today is Hidden ValleyElementary School there the only one that will not being classes today every other School Mothers elementary middle charter or high school. They will all be back in session theyve been off the past 2 days. But again just you know james and ari is you would mention so many people up here they were the first to lose power and some of them are the last to get it back on so its going to be you another day of kind of spotty coverage when it comes to power a little bit more chaos up here in santa rosa for now reporting live for Christina Tetreault kron 4 news. All right, thanks a lot christine i am in the going out for a day versus couple days. And the frustrating thing is as certain towns come online, its not the entire town right its always just the spotty sections to come back on and others are still left in the dark and theyre still wondering when their powers going to get restored mess. Part of the in all of this with kron fours will tran standing by in uh prime example, lafayette where folks are dealing with that very thing well. Some folks are dealing with it others are not im in downtown lafayette you can see the intersection lights behind me it looks like normal day. This area is back to normal. But there are other parts still in the dark and have been in the dark since wednesday at 11 oclock at night. Heres new video that i shot about 20 minutes ago. And you can see pg e trucks the scene what ive notice is there driving around james and area. Theyre looking up at a high power lines to see theres any damage. Theyre crisscrossing this area happy valley which is still in the dark no word on when power will be restored because they still have to check out the lies to see if theres any damage and then they will have to re energize the lines and thats if theres no damage if there is damage then theyll have to repair it and that could take a little bit longer but the goal for pg any is to get all 34 counties back up and running. Let me show you a map of lafayette, most of it still without power and we have proof this is from p g any this is from their web site and you can see it basically comes and 2 color shades the orange though those are the areas still without power and the young the little bit lighter area. Those are the area slowly but surely getting power a lot of people. Theyre getting frustrated, i spoke to a woman who works at a school and she said during the day not a problem they usually bake fresh muffins for the kids in the morning, but now without power, the teachers are coming in with other snacks premade snacks from the stores and then giving it to the kids for the kids, it seems fun, they can play around with those electric candles and learn some safety procedures. But the adults theyre all hoping that the power will be restored and if youre wondering if its windy or not it is not windy at all so a lot of people very frustrated, james and ari as you might know, theres a wide windstorm. Nothing like worse and Southern California this morning. But those people have to look at whats happening. And so cal right now and say wow i mean the way that with the winds can whip up in spread that fire this morning. Thats dangerous as. Now you know i spoke to some people and its right down the middle there are those very upset with pg and he and there those say weve seen wildfires of the past 2 years. And im sure they know whats going on with los angeles and they are telling me. Yeah, its an inconvenience but whats more of inconvenience than your home being destroyed displaced for months if not years. In san jose and theyre saying as much and more residents come back on line pg working to restore power. They restored power about 4 oclock yesterday too the impacted neighborhoods in east san jose. And also pge acknowledge. This shutdown then go as smoothly as it could have a big part that they say were was a problem is communication we talked to somebody in san jose. They saw the communication was okay, but they had the gun other issue was basically get the power back on quicker. Do you think the communicated well we were well informed that the power will be going out. So it just be nice if they resolve these issues a loss to net, so you wouldnt be without power for so long. And the mayor sam liccardo says that the shutdown cost the city about a half half a Million Dollars. Stay with kron 4 will give you the latest on the kron 00 04am morning news and let you know whos coming back online and who still without power and a great resource is also our 24 7 commercial free news app thats called kron on you get that by gonna con dot t v. At least she wont be doing so with any bad weather the Golden Gate Bridge is Crystal Clear just like the rest of the bay area is 40s and 50s for your current temperatures as you are venturing outside this friday morning. Now a lot of us still without power this morning if youre watching kron on that may be the case for you we are off to a chilly start up in the north bay for so many of you that are up in Sonoma County without that power youre in the 30s right now, and your daytime highs today are going to be among some of our warmest so hopefully we get that power going pretty quickly here. The good news is fire weather has subsided for us in the bay. Bad news is its moved further. South now and without wildfire burning in l a you can actually see red and yellow on this map thats indicating the extreme fire danger today for those counties down south while here in the bay area. Were not looking at any of those contours still be wary of any potential wildfires as red flag warnings remain up in lake and colusa counties expired for the rest of the bay area you head down south and thats where were looking at all the red from la down to san diego and up into the southern sierra conditions here in the bay today as we work our way through the morning. Youre going to notice wind speeds a lot calmer than yesterday to 12 Miles Per Hour at times thats a light kind of day normal areas that are pretty windy like fairfield will be seeing winds at times but nothing like yesterday certainly a very much so nineday situation very calm today compared to yesterdays high winds 70s for fleet week stuff here in San Francisco today, your head now to Marina District expect mostly low 70s. 70s right along the shoreline to if you want to head out to the beach while 80s for most of the bay areas daytime highs today. Now temperatures are actually going to be a touch warmer today than what we did see for yestery was solid 80s in the south bay and most daytime highs in the 80s for the east bay too leicester in areas right along side, the shore of the bay such as Berkeley Oakland and richmond. Concord in walnut creek each up to 82. While sonoma 83 today along with pittsburgh, sharing that same number with you. And santa rosa also up to 83 and again a lot of these spots still dont have power. So they want to. Including your plans finding a place to get on the cooler side into the afternoon now saturday and sunday temperatures will remain pretty seasonable to close out the weekend. Next week on average going to be cooler than this week was with highs in the 70s. Robin. All right, thank you john back to the richmond sandra fell bridge where weve had no problems all morning long on can we keep it that way. Its actually fanning out in this is great your trip here from the east bay to the north bay looks really good at leading up to the toll plaza, just a minor weights so far 9 minutes earlier you will backed up to castro. But thats no longer the case are really good trip to the north bay. The bay bridge traffic is heavy its going to stay heavy for the remainder of this hour. Youre backed up only to the bottom of the mason has not breach. 24 its not stacking up that heavily on your connectors its holding at the bottom of your connectors are right now youre good at 15 minutes to make it into San Francisco. Were checking some more freeways, numbers and theyre not. All the shore freeway thats part of your commute 17 minutes from crockett down to oakland 24 wannacry to the caldecott 13 minutes great for friday morning, 5 80 and the nimitz a little busy but. And from to 38 to 9. 80 averaging 2021 minutes. So thats a good trip into downtown oakland will have more in just a bit darya. This morning hes a fire in Southern California is a reason pg e says they cut our power here the area was the high winds. Winds down south wicked blowing this fire expanding it to 4700 acres right yet not even 12 hours into its own already a couple dozen homes are lost will be back with more few minutes. Enough with mouthwash that burns. In fact, most mouthwashes contain more alcohol than you think. But colgate mouthwash is alcoholfree, and kills 99 of germs, without the burn. Ive got some new information here about our breaking news story in Southern California wildfire. Thats burning right now in the hills north. Of san fernando and a burbank you can see the live pictures here. Looks like we do have one deaths associated with this fire thats been reported and the number of homes damaged has gone up now to 45 as this fire continues to gosh, more than double win and a at 12,000 homes currently under mandatory evacuation orders as this fire has now grown to more than 4,000 acres in size will be back qualifying stays at choicehotels. Just one bowl of frosted mini wheats and youre good till lunch. In Southern California what that pg e was afraid of here with the high winds now our winds are gone, but their winds have picked up and theyre very strong and theyre blowing this fire. In la, the 2 neighborhoods that are highly populated so far we just found out 45 homes and then either destroyed or damaged in this fire. So far. Its grown to more than 4,000 acres in size and last check was 4700 acres in size and what youre looking at here is helicopter south of the fire right so the smoke is coming up and blowing to the south into that the Populated Areas which are below the shot you cant quite see it there m be se point that the camera shot a white now, but its zooming in now where its burning on the ridge lines. We heard from the of the actual pilot of the helicopter earlier talking about how when the fires way up here in the ridges the firefighters will often times st let that burn because its not endangering and he lives or any property. But when it starts to blow in the direction of homes. Thats when they icte protection mode, they start lining the streets throw water on the rich and its really the embers that will this just fly and stop drop just just dropped down onto a house. Its not near the fire. And in the end that cases we saw it was easier in the dark in a in this morning you could see the glow of the various spot fires. That were catching homes on fire in a for those embers drier into Populated Areas that they had still about 12,000 homes under mandatory evacuation orders right now and were getting word that some of the effects centers that theyve set up are already at capacity an theyre having to other locations, horror. Yeah, and the fire jumped a few freeways which a close there. But thats not it was to 10 5 the 5 now so big problems down there now you can see neighborhoods right its its right up against backyard fences and again it did it did consume a number of homes. You can see all the response. The crews are out there and were just hoping that all those evacuations cover the areas that were affected as a right and as weve been chatting with john about this this morning at this is this is the very same system that brought us our winds yesterday has migrated to Southern California and we can see what its doing to the much stronger for them down there than we had yesterday, yeah consistently stronger to weve seen winds just staying with us throughout the evening on into the morning for Southern California. Well weve come down here in the bay only a couple of red flag warnings left up in lake and colusa counties you head down south. And obviously its a different situation with the strong winds low humidity and that fire burning just north of l a red flag warnings remain for much of the day today were going to be seeing high fire danger as these winds continue to remain strong gusting regularly up to 60 Miles Per Hour. Here in the bay very different than that calm conditions across the day today. This is going to set us up for a really nice afternoon ahead of us 70s for your highs in San Francisco to oakland while 80s return for many other areas like san jose making for a warmer one and i know so many of us without power still so may want to find yourself a cool spot to get to or if you do have electricity, maybe offer up your home to those who are still without power today. I will have more your forecast still to come some it over to robin with an updated look at traffic why thank you john lets head over to the go gate we want to check in on one oh one, its looking good here very quiet picking up so we have more traffic now. Heading into San Francisco but trouble free and thats what we like to see during the morning drive. It is only 27 minutes novato to the toll plaza, the bay bridge traffic 80 west. Its much much busier as expected. But your backup only goes to west grand so youre slow and stretches from west grand getting on to the suspension at 14 minutes and taking a peek at traffic tracker livermore to dublin is fine a lot of folks are stuck in a nasty crash along the ultimate 5 west at grant line so thats why i look so good through livermore and dublin dublin to fremont 15 minutes to 3711 minutes, 8. 80 to one oh one james darya thanks a ok so happening now want to give you quick update again on the power restoration thats underway right now across the bay areas a lot of communities are still in the dark but the hope is maybe the lights will be back on today, joining us now on the phone is pg e spokesperson tamar sarkis and good morning. Good morning. Cell phone might get out. But lets try this. If you increased the number. Summers that have been able to get back. We had a graphic that shows kind of county by county how youre doing so far. Am to 3rd of customers affected by the Public Safety power shutoff have been restored. This reflects 492,000 783 restored out of a total of 783,000 impacted. No crop. 245,000 customers remain restored and were working very diligently day make that happened to me actually have. 1300 on the ground field personnel and 44 helicopters working throughout our service area to make the inspections threatened the to happen that safely restore power. Why it taken so long up in the north bay of people having complaining because they were the first have a general. Against noma county only 46 of the got their lights back on. We really are having to go with the weather so as the weather changes. As theyre able to safely get out there whether of action actually die down in certain areas. Yeah well we can actually go out and start both infections. The inspections are a product that we have to get into. Area where theres no vehicle act that you have to hike into area. We do our best to get as much work done during the late hours because at night time obviously if he cannot reliable inspections of the camp fire helicopters. So we appreciate our customers patience, we know what a big impact it has on our customers and the community that we serve but please know were out there in full force. It is all hands on deck. So you shut off. The power because youre worried about the winds blowing over power lines or whatever and sparking a fire found in. The in these inspections so far any cases where. Active might have started a fire and indeed they power was cut so they didnt. Well i dont want to speculate, but i can tell you of that they and the morning we have identified 23 instances of weatherrelated damage. She worked that in psta impacted areas and the company is working right now to attract each repairs. O its interesting to know. Ok so a lot of folks that weve been talking to the past day or 2 of been like is this really necessary how are going even know if this was effective. So that kind of a kind of gives us a glimpse as to maybe a disaster we could have potentially avoid it if youre finding storm related damage. Absolutely we are only doing that i would it enough to carry this is not something that likely if that decision not very difficult for us to make but at the end of the day, the safety of our customers and the community mr. Is their most important responsibility in sounds like what we heard from a. Ups their pg e is that they werent prepared. In terms of communication and your website because it kept crashing and nobody could use it so are you improve matter what have you learned from this and that case because folks couldnt get reliable information from the genie yesterday about shutdowns in the day before. Yes due to unprecedented amount of traffic that pg e thought what by experienced issues early in the weather it back and was unable to provide information parka fewer than it is an issue that has been resolved. We do apologize for the frustration, we know that this was difficulty for many of our customers were working to fortify online resources for any future psp how much of big deal is has been like you cant get power back like, but you know just a wave of a wand its takes. 3 days to get power. You know it wasnt quite as windy and many of areas as maybe that thought or whatever. Is this a more going expect next time. Its going to be this massive outage or even a scalable can try to target more next time. Really it just depends on the weather had Public Safety power shut off in the pop. They have never come close. She the size of its particular Public Safety power shutoff but we all know experience unprecedented. We thought got up 77 Miles Per Hour in some areas. That were doing whats for our customers and the communities serve. But again its not something we take lightly and what do you think about more following suit like lets say in san jose they lost i think it was a half a Million Dollars because of the power shut down. Start to pressure you and say were losing too much money will you incur some of the cost of that considering youre doing this to save yourselves. Sorry repeat lot this is obviously pgas want to start a fire in doesnt want to be sued for starting a fire you dont want to spark a fire. Measure which is good for safety. Its also good for pg its bad for cities that lose money and businesses. So example, a grain of sand they said they lost half a Million Dollars. Would you consider reimbursing cities if this becomes a regular saying might you consider incurring some of that. This is done for the safety of our customers and our communities. In terms of incurring the cost at it, hi. Incur the cop because this is a weather event. We do understand that there are hardships involved and we do apologize for our customers for that. What we do things that customers can make claim. They want and we can certainly evaluate on a by case basis. But at the time got it there. Ok, i know that the governor yesterday was saying was just like. In this day and age we shouldnt see this kind of thing and we shouldnt it may be that pg should spend more of the money on and you know again maintaining a lines of that i think is there going to be a change in sir, your priorities Going Forward to try to prevent this fight made maintaining lines. Well were already in the process of working to hard in our system supported by our system thats part of an entire program that it had in place for some time now call there community while think program but we do have the the expect to have a 100 and at 60 we have been working too. Harden line art in our poll. When appropriate we are looking at undergrounding. And and the in addition to pf yeah, not the standalone. Half our doorstep that were taking were in getting weather stations all throughout our service area that we can monitor 24 7 during wildfire season and make sure that we have the most up to date. Underground information as some of the comments. We absolutely share the the focus on reducing the threat has struck that flout fires in california. And thats why we took this action we did not take it lightly. We do think our customers for their patients during the white bread and when a bank and we are working right now patroller line for damaging get our customers lives back to ok all right, thanks a thank you so much and hopefully well have more more communities come back online today. Well be covering it for use to stay connected to kron broadcast throughout the day through our kron on app that are 20 for commercial free news app kron on dot tv to find out more about that and if we do get reports of communities coming online or pg e announcing. As 13,000 homes are under mandatory evacuation orders right now last check we had more than 40 homes damaged or destroyed by the flames so far but thats expected to grow because the fire as of 8 oclock this morning was only 0 contained thats right cal fire and a Southern CaliforniaFire Agencies have made no progress in containing this fire which is fueled by the santa ana winds will keep you there are those who will say that youre too fat. But yet its looking much much better compared to the last hour 7 oclock 6clock we have dropped down to 17 minutes. Thats considered a pretty quick trip to make it across the san mateo bridge and over to the peninsula. So no big problems right now, its looking good and very quiet heading into foster city and san mateo protecting the bay bridge traffic its busy its been busy all morning. But we see a little. In the middle for some of the fast track lanes or picking up it is still slow off and on for west grand of this is also good. Were down to 13 minutes to make it into San Francisco, were checking traffic tracker looking at some more drive times theyre not bad at all, maybe you take one on one its about 13 minutes from brisbane to 80 15 minutes, if you take 2. 80 from daly city to downtown San Francisco, even 24 looks pretty good for friday morning at a quick 15 minute trip from won a creek through the caldecott over to oakland jenks. 8. 52, heres a quick update now on the breaking news out of Southern California where wildfire burning right now its called the saddle a saddle ridge fire and were looking right now it looks like fire prsonnel vehicle fire. To pull example theyre trying to call on. Try to contain this fire right now theyre contained last check was 0 well see if this makes a difference get another the big breaking news in Southern California. Theyve got a massive wildfire. There hard from above and with ground crews we saw bulldozers theyre trying to cut some lines but this because of the winds has also been fueled into neighborhoods and we know that already 45 holmes at least have been damaged or destroyed in this fire and here it looks like oh its up into the hills but whats been had happening is the embers have been blowing in 2 populated tract with large homes there, you know really side by side. And so thats a problem as well so then that fire spreading to yeah in fact thats what prompted 13,000 homes now. To be thrown into mock mandatory evacuation orders all those residents have find someplace else to be. While firefighters are working to battle the blaze were going to be back with more on this coming up at the top of the next hour so stay tuned, well good morning, thanks for joining us. Im darya folsom and im James Fletcher this was the scene we saw when we first came on air for this morning with flames absolutely chewing through the hills north of burbank in the San Fernando Valley fueled by santa ana winds it absolutely exploded overnight. First reported at 09 00pm and by early this morning already grown to 4700 acre yeah now well over 12,000 people are out of their homes and you can see why. There have been already at least 45 homes destroyed or damaged in the fire. And there is one death linked to it because a man apparently was trying put the flames out himself trying to battle the fire that broke out in his house when he had a heart attack. You can see now in the light of day. What theyre dealing with neighborhood by neighborhood spraying you can see them in the upper left corner they are spring down shrubbery and hoses peoples back fences that the fires come right back up against them. All of these neighborhoods were hoping have been evacuated because again now we talked about the mandatory evacuations in a huge Swimming Pool on. There just trying to spray down save as many homes as they can. They dont want lose any more homes are more life in this in a lot of it it has been burning in the hills. But the problem is the santa ana winds are so strong that there throwing embers into neighborhoods like the one you see here we have a map get better idea of where this fire is burning. Its right where i 5 comes out of the grapevine at the top your screen there and into the San Fernando Valley. Youve ever take your kids to disneyland thats that moment where you breathe a sigh relief because you arrived in la after a long drive. Well, its right there where the fires are burnin
