The new images coming into the newsroom after otis strikes as a category 5 hurricane. And heres a live look outside before we head to break. It is thursday, or friday junior as we like to say. Were looking live from the mark hopkins cam on the top of when we challenged ourselves to create the worlds most emotional and sustainable vehicle, we had tothink differently. We had to push the boundaries to not just create a car but a movement. Every fisker ocean is produced with over 50 kilograms of ethically sourced, recycled materials. Its about accomplishing something bigger than itself. A clean future for all. New video this morning of the impact of otis along the Pacific Coast of mexico. The category 5 storm slammed into acapulco tuesday night blowing out windows at beach front hotels. The main he he into there was blocked for landslides for most of yesterday complicating rescue and recovery efforts. The roadway is now open for emergency vehicles only. This video shows the moment otis ripped right through a house. You can hear a man yelling at the other people inside to hide in the back room as the rain pelts them inside of their own home and this drone footage shows the aftermath. Streets a golf course and a sports stadium completely inundated in what looks like a hotel or condo building ripped to shreds. Sorry about the water mark on your screen. This is how the video came to us but we wanted to show it to you to really give you an idea of how difficult it will be for people to get out. But thats what people will have to do and our Andrea Nakano went to Oakland International where some are flying in via mexico city. However, she met one man headed in the other direction. Reporter jim wright has seen some of the devastating pictures coming out of acapulco. As hurricane otis ripped through the area. It really feel for the people in acapulco, especially the time frame of how it developed so quickly. And it was a category 5 when it hit, which is crazy. Reporter jim is going to a coastal town just south of acapulco. Its a place where he hopes to retire. Images and information coming out of acapulco are limited as power has been completely wiped out in the area. Calvary chapel has one of its churches just three blocks from the water. Pastor angel baez hasnt been able to reach any of the Staff Members sing the early hours of the storm. He said angel, the wind here is ferocious. We have never seen theyve gone through hurricanes before. He says, pastor angel, weve never seen anything like this and the amount of water thats coming down is just unbelievable. Can i have reporter jim says he doesnt have second thoughts about retiring on the coast of mexico. But this hurricane will make him more cautious about the location of his new home. And one of the reasons that i chose that area, because of infrequency of hurricanes. And you just hope that everybody gets to where they need to be safely. Now it has been downgraded to remnants of otis. So that is a good thing, jessica burch, im sure you know lot more, we see the cycle behind you right now. You know, i just what i ended up doing it doesnt even have a name to it anymore because its the remnants leftover. What im showing you right now is just the past 24 hours on the loop. For our satellite and radar imagery. Now this system really did pack a punch and i mean we dont see a category 5 just like that as it made its way inland up near mexico and a lot of meteorologists i have been following this all yesterday and especially yesterday morning as it was making landfall. It really did come as a surprise for many and heres where its at right now. As it cold fronted to track north all throughout yesterday afternoon into the evening hours and now the leftover storm system is actually up just near texas and along that border. Continue to watch that closely heading into the afternoon hours and of course all the damage that has come from it too. But back here in the bay area, lets talk about our forecast here locally. Low pressure has been moving its way in from the north, weve had two systems this week. Basically two cold fronts. The one that came through yesterday which we all felt and i mean it was so falllike yesterday. We were dealing with cold air moving in. Windy conditions. A little bit of rain up in the north bay. Heading into friday, were going to see a very similar system. Just more dry with that one. More cold air excuse me moving its way in from the north. Lets take a look at the daytime highs today. Today were still sitting in the 60s near San Francisco and upper 60s across the bay bridge into oakland. And right behind me you can actually see the bay bridge. Visibility is great as were waking up and heading out the door. Clear conditions throughout most of the bay. Were sitting at 67 degrees for our daytime highs today this afternoon up anywhere from vallejo excuse me actually vallejo is 60 and 68. 67 up near santa rosa all the way down into oakland. And were warming up into the 60s today and anywhere from livermore all the way down into the Santa Clara Valley. Where were also seeing Clear Conditions there too. I want to drop all this and i want to show you whats going on as we head into the next seven days. Updating our numbers, were really not seeing too much of a change. Upper 60s flirting with lower 70s throughout the next seven days. We will see a lot more sunshine though which hey, by the way, halloween is right around the corner for all the trickortreaters heading out there, theyre going to be dealing with dry conditions but those overnight hours, they get pretty brisk and chilly. Think about yesterday alone and overnight lows dropped down to the 40s and it was very cool. So just keep that in mind of course the layers are going to be necessary for all those trickortreaters and maybe underneath their you know, cute little costumes, heading into the bay upper 60s turn into lower 60s by tomorrow as the next cold front moves in. But notice how we recover pretty fast in the 70s wrapping up this week and heading into next week with cloudy skies and in the longrange models. Lets talk about the freeways right now and i have mostly good news to report. Getting up early on this thursday morning, right now is a good time to be on the roadways. Live look here at the bay bridge, metering lights are off and its actually been a pretty nice ride overall. For the most part this morning. As you work your way making that way out of the east bay over into San Francisco this morning. So pretty easy and calm conditions there. Lets look at some of the maps right now. Where we are tracking a few brake lights is that ride westbound 580, no surprise there. Supercommuters, you are up early and you are making that ride through tracy getting on to 580. You kind of know what to expect overail but we have reports of a crash at grant line and its blocking the right lane. Thats making things just a little bit slower than usual. So maybe give yourself some extra time and grab that jacket and leave a few minutes early to get through the brake lights there. Headed out of the south bay this morning, so far traffic is moving along pretty nicely overall. Were seeing some nice conditions north 101, 280, really no problems right now on any of our south bay freeways. So if you are headed on 101 maybe into the peninsula towards sfo, right now is a good time to be on the freeways. Reed . Well, as parents we know with flu shots and vaccines, kids are not fans of the needles. But never fear. Doctors at lucille pack hard Childrens Hospital have their ways to ease the nerves over needles. Shawn chitnis live with mow a video game of all things helps. Hi shawn. Reporter hey reed, good morning. Yeah, halloween may be just around the corner but this is not the type of scare that kids and really adults are looking forward to. This technology could be a game changer literally with a video game to take the fear away from kids and later when they become adults. Its the visit no kid looks forward to. Getting a shot in the arm. And these days, there are many they have to receive too. So this stanford childrens Chariot Program has a new video game to distract them. And take away any anxiety they may feel during the whole experience. We frequently encounter kids and even big kids, adults, who are scared of needles and shots. Reporter dr. Sam rodriguez is a pediatric anesthesiologist and codirector of the program. Hes also a parent of three kids and knows how difficult this can be. How can we address this needle phobia . So this fear of needles. And target it at a really, really young age so that we dont have adults who are scared of needles in the future and hesitant to get vaccines. Reporter the idea is to get the patient playing the game where they build a pinata and try to collect the prize inside it well before they ever feel a poke from the needle. Young kids sometimes building the pinata is their favorite part and that will be the whole experience for them. Thats all they want to do. Reporter fun graphics, music to help draw them in, and even a rubber chicken to squeeze are all part of the game. And at the end, they get a prize to pick and take home. Anything we can do to increase the amount of patients getting their vaccines, especially on time and staying on schedule, is really valuable. Reporter its not just a win for the child and their family. But the whole community. It is a Public Health measure that not only helps the individual, but society as a whole. Reporter and so of course they are really excited to see what they can do with this video game. Its one of many types of projects that have been coming from this team. And this video game specifically, it really represents about a decade of research and just that experience of working with young patients to figure out what will help them in this situation. Because its a pilot program, you may not see it at all locations right away. But they are going to start working with staff to continue training them on this video game as well as get more feedback from kids. Reed back to you. All right. Shawn, thank you so much. Reed, were talking about a situation where roughly that many lives may have been lost in a single night in a single town here. Well, when my viewers in california hear the reports of a mass shooting in our country, we look to california laws. We know that we are some of the strictest gun laws in the country. What are the gun laws like there in maine . Reporter well, reed, advocacy groups say theyre some of the more lenient in the country. Perhaps to surprise because maine is a place that has deep ties to gun ownership and its a place with a deep connection to hunting and sports shooting. But we do know that several efforts to introduce red flag laws and waiting periods, other gun control measures, have been struck down here in the past. So you would imagine that those discussions will come up again in the wake of this awful shooting. Reed . Thats another system moving its way in from the north but whats interesting about this, its cold dense air but it doesnt pack a lot of a punch when it comes to moisture. So usually cold fronts will see some rain with it. This next one, not so much. At least for now. Now visibility is great this morning. Clear brisk conditions across the bay bridge as were waking up. But into this afternoon, well see a little bit more of a wind gust especially along our coastline. Right now its still offshore. Until around noon. And then we start seeing a shift to those winds and were seeing on shore wind anywhere up to around 20, even 25 Miles Per Hour in areas like San Francisco. But its not quite that time of the year just yet for those Winter Sports everyone. So hold on just a bit. Most of the snow is expected to melt later today. Ski resorts will not open up for about another month or so. But in the meantime, that does mean more difficult conditions along highway 80. I80 rather at one point yesterday caltrans had it first chain controls of the season in place. I was in shock. Yeah. I didnt know it was going to rain or snow. Its unbelievable. And while the snow is passed, officials are still warning drivers to slow down and be cautious because the roads are slick and wet. But yeah, jessica, we are getting into that time of year where we will be talking a lot about those chain control requirements on 80 and 50 and who doesnt love a fun weekend up in that toe . I was look tact numbers, the you know, just South Lake Tahoe got less than a quarter inch. Which is not a lot but this is kind of gearing us up getting closer to ski season. A quick look back here in the bay where we did not get any snow. But that same system that brought us all that cold air, thats whats actually brought them that cold, coldness air too and some snow to fall up in the sierra. Were taking up to the 50s all throughout the Santa Clara Valley. But heading a little bit more north, our overnight lows i mean, they dipped down into the 40s up in the north bay. From novato all the way up into petaluma and santa rosa for that matter, a chilly start this morning. But i want to show you whats to come as we wrap up this week and head into the weekend. I want to show you a couple of things. Our temperature anomaly map is going to come up next and thats going to show you kind of how below average not only us here in the bay area, are feeling when it comes to the temperatures but pretty much widespread throughout the Pacific Northwest and onward. This system of low pressure moves its way in from the north. Its cold dense air and i cant stress that enough. But it didnt have a lot of moisture to it and were going to see another system move its way in on friday thats very similar to the one that came in yesterday. This is our temperature anomaly map all this blue right here, showing below average temperatures. And notice how as we extend all throughout the rest of this week that continues to stretch its way off into the da toe cos all the way down into nebraska. And oklahoma. But back here in the bay were not spared either. Lets talk more about that. Drop the monitor and show you the daytime highs today. And then well goat if the next seven days around the corner. Today were sitting in the upper 60s up near santa rosa and petaluma. Well hit the 70s in areas like novato and as we head off into the east, yes, were going to see some more 70s too. But its pretty much the similar forecast to yesterday. I mean, upper 60s near antioch and upper 60s in livermore. All the way down into the Santa Clara Valley this afternoon. Temperatures arent going to warmouth too much more. It feels like fall if anything it almost kind of feels winterlike in some pockets of the bay area. This is below average but watch what happens the next seven days. We will warm up a little bit more. Not by much by any means and i mean if anything by friday were going to dip down a bit more and then we average out in the low 70s throughout the rest of this weekend heading into next week for our inland forecast. A lot of sunshine though. I will say that. Halloween right around the corner and parents are probably thinking oh no. Its going to be cold. Yes, layer the kiddos of course with the costumes. However, at least its going to be a dry one as we head into next week. No rain in the forecast for the next seven days as of now. 70s in the bay area and very similar to our inland forecast. This is the time of year where we start seeing handinhand temperatures. Its not like the summer where we get this triple digits off into the east bay and then cooler temperatures along the coast. Now were all starting to feel the same type of weather upper 60s and lower 70s for quite some time. Gianna . All right, jess, thank you. Lets talk about the roadways right now. And yeah, grab that jacket this morning. As you hit the roadways before you head out the door and definitely do it pretty early because you are going to need some extra time on some of thefreeways. The metering lights are officially on at the bay bridge toll plaza and traffic is slow. Backing up already for folks making that ride over into San Francisco this morning. So definitely start packing your patience just a little bit if you need some extra time you might need a few extra minutes working your way through there. Heres a look at the mapping system and you can see its not too bad overall. Were seeing some pretty nice conditions at least on 680. No delays there. But once you are getting on that 205 over to 680 connector, the right lane is blocked and traffic is backed up just a bit near grant line road. So its a little busy there. Definitely get a lot better past that point the lest of the way into the Altamont Pass towards the Livermore Valley and heres the overview of san jose. You know thumbs up headed along 280. 270. Nothing slowing you down there. But couple of brake lights over to 880. Definitely starting to slow down just a little bit. And no fog really at the Golden Gate Bridge right now. So thats a nice ride into San Francisco. Reed . Time now 5 50. Help for flams supporting the fight to live for their critically ill children.
