From cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. Remembering a political pioneer. Dignitaries and the public are paying tribute to the late senator dianne feinstein. Tens of thousands of healthcare workers are on strike. What it means for kaiser patients now and in the coming days. A chance to get on board. What visitors can check out on these navy ships for fleet week. Good afternoon. Im elizabeth cook. Today, the bay area is honoring the late senator dianne feinstein. Taking a live look inside San Francisco city hall where her body is lying in state in the rotunda. People have been filing past her casket all day long to pay their respects. Anne makovec has more in todays remembrances and thoughts from some of the visitors. Pretty remarkable. It is part of a long process. The public viewing will be going on for another few hours. We have seen people lining up all morning for a chance to pay their respects. Taking a live look inside city hall, you can see her casket there as two San FranciscoPolice Officers stand at each end. There are people there on the left that are lining up to take a moment in front of that casket. It was brought to city hall in a hurst at 8 00 this morning, carried into the building, past a member of dignitaries, members of feinsteins family and an honor guard of San FranciscoPolice Officers and firefighters. Growing line of people started gathering at city hall to pass through security and pay their respects to the late senator as the casket arrived. This is where she launched her groundbreaking political career and spent a decade as the citys first female mayor. Among the family members, coworkers and staff, there was House Speaker r nancy pelosi wh approached and kissed the casket holding the hand of feinsteins daughter catherine and granddaughter eileen. Here is dr. Anthony fauci. He was escorted in by mayor london breed. He worked closely with then mayor feinstein in the heat of the aids crisis in the 80s. Our kenny choi has been inside city hall all day and brought us this perspective. We spoke to so many people expressing their gratitude for what she did for the city and the state as a former board of supervisor, former mayor of San Francisco and u. S. Senator. Sorry. She helped lead us through those crises. She helped us through the aids crisis as well. I think she has been an incredible supporter of our city and i think she really was for our state. People here at city hall, after they made their way through the rotunda, had a chance to write some letters to the late senator. One of them, one person sharing with me what he wrote, saying that feinstein brought so much light into this city. Feinstein died thursday at her home in washington, d. C. After a series of illnesses. She was a political powerhouse, breaking glass ceilings for women throughout her career, first elected to office in 1969, before women could even get a credit card by themselves. She went on to become the first woman president of the San Francisco board of supervisors and the first woman mayor. Feinstein was californias longest serving senator. She was elected in 1992. Lets take another live look inside San Francisco city hall. Mourners can pay their respects there until 7 00 tonight. Tomorrow, the Funeral Service will be held outside city hall. Speakers including Vice PresidentKamala Harris and u. S. Senate majority leader chuck schumer. President biden will deliver remarks by recorded video. That all starts tomorrow at 1 00. It was going to be closed to the public and they were going to have it at the nearby theater and livestream it but they decided it should be open to the public. Organizers invited everybody there to the steps of city hall. It is pretty heartwarming to see the emotion coming from 70 people from different walks of life. That speaks to the impact she had not only on San Francisco but throughout our country and her state and our commitment to Public Service is inspiring. This is special it is all happening in the San Francisco. She was launched here and this was her home. She is an icon here. So many firsts unfettered on senator feinsteins history. She was the first top democrat on the Senate Judiciary committee. We talked with carolyn heldman, a democratic strategist and associate professor of politics at Occidental College about feinsteins profound effect. One of the first things she asked me when i was a legislative aide in d. C. In the 90s, she said, are you planning to run for public office. That was often a question she would ask women she ran into. I think her legacy, it is not just that she achieved all of these things, it is that she extended her hand back to girls and women to make sure she was not the last. Another woman, lufthansa butler, will finish al senator feinsteins term. Butler is a former union leader and democratic strategist. She is the third black female u. S. Senator in history and the first openly lesbian senator. Butler spoke today about the honor of sitting in feinsteins seat. She has the courage to want to run. She had the courage to want to win. When she one, she did the work to change the world. To be able to sit in her seat, knowing that i will never be able to fill her shoes, is the honor of a lifetime. We continue to reflect on senator feinsteins life and legacy and we will have live coverage of her Memorial Service tomorrow starting at 12 30, streaming on cbs news bay area. The largest healthcare workers strike and u. S. History is underway. 75,000 Kaiser Permanente workers hit the picket lines today. Here is a look at the demonstrations in redwood city, oakland, and walnut creek. Employees are striking here in california and four other states. They are demanding more staffing which the union argues would help solve their high employee turnover problem and reduce patient wait times. We want to make sure that our Staffing Levels get up to par so we can service our patients. We are members as well. As members, we have a hard time getting appointments. Benefits are waiting. They will take care of themselves. It is the staffing crisis. Kaiser says that talks are ongoing and they are, quote, committed to reaching a new agreement. They also stress that hospitals and Emergency Rooms will remain open during the strike but will likely result in longer wait times for patients. It is San Francisco fleet week and starting today, the u. S. Navy is giving free tours of the uss Paul Hamilton and the uss john p bertha. People have a chance to see what an averaged a looks like on board and learn about the ship submissions. Inside, people can check out the flight deck or helicopters land, where the sailors and marines eat and sleep as well as the deck where amphibious vehicles can launch. And see officer giving the torah tells us she is excited to get people close access to the ship. Being able to show everyone what we do in our craft we have been operational for two years. We are able to pull into port and show the public what we do. This ship has been involved in missions that you could say are out of this world. The crew on board has helped nasa prepare for the upcoming artemis 2 mission around the world. The ships will be shown off at pier 30, pier 32 and pier 35 throughout the week, except for friday. That is when the parade of ships happens. Tomorrow, tours will be from 10 00 a. M. Until 4 00 p. M. Another big draw to fleet week each year is the blue angels. Her very own meteorologist Jessica Burch , a pilot herself, i got a chance to play with them. She boarded this plane at Oakland International this room. She was given a black jumpsuit embroidered with blue angels bip written on the left to wear for her flight. She gave us a thumbs up before the plane taxied on the runway and here is the moment when the plane takes off. There she goes, flying a little low and then lifts up higher into the sky. We had our 360 camera in the cockpit and we will bring you that perspective this friday during our live fleet week special. It is pretty cool. In addition to the blue angels and the massive ships, there are very practical purposes to bringing the troops to the bay area each year. Shawn chitnis rode along with the San FranciscoFire Department and the military as they carry out important exercises together. Their day started early at fire station 49 in the San Francisco. Members of the navy and marines showing up to work alongside 10 medic units. Their jobs are different and they have responded to a variety of calls but there is so much they can learn from each other. For paramedics, it is a chance to hear about what they may use to help patients in the future. The sharing of the knowledge back and forth is what i am looking forward to hearing about. These medic units showed off their set up to members of the military, explaining how they operate each ship. A hospital corpsman, part of the medical staff for the navy, was along for the ride. I am hoping i can get some experience working in a small unit like that in an emergency situation with little outside help. Paramedics as well as a member of the us navy were paired together in this ambulance going out on emergency calls this morning in the city. We get the opportunity to hang out and talk about those experiences, share in that and learn from each other which is invaluable. Riding together today so they can both be better at their jobs tomorrow. Cbs news bay area is the official media partner for fleet week. We got you covered from land, air and sea all week long, leading up to our spectacular special. We will bring you the parade of ships live at 11 00 a. M. , live with the blue angels at 3 00. They are a valuable tool as search and rescues. These especially trained dogs get ready for emergencies and where you can see them in action during fleet week. More on this special blessing ceremony for pets in the bay area today. Speaking of fleet week, we will have this specific forecast over the next couple of days. Did you notice the warmup today . Specifically, if you are anywhere in the bay, th at cretors, we handcraft every batch of our delicious popcorn. Like our cretors cheese and caramel mix. Great on their own, even better together. Try cretors, handcrafted smallbatch popcorn. As we celebrate fleet week launched by senator dianne feinstein, we are looking at a key role search and rescue dogs play in the first crucial minutes during an emergency. Or lauren toms met with the rescue k9 and her handler to find out how they get ready for anything. Search and rescue dog cassie loves her job. Nobody knows that better than handler paul san diego. She is my other half. She is with us 24 7. She is truly my partner. Normal people would have their beat partner or you have your team but she is my partner. She is part of a team of highly trained San Francisco buyer canines used for Emergency Response. Say we had a building here and a completely collapsed. She is able to go across the rubble a lot easier then we can. She is able to find a buried victim it does not matter how many floors as opposed to we could go for days searching as opposed to a dog finding within minutes. For cassie, it is a game of hide and seek. After a year of training, she learned to pick up the scents of people present and search for missing sent that maybe a person stuck below rubble. It is that giant game of hide and seek for them that they have ingrained. Dont stop until you find your toy. In a drill, cassie is given the command to find a firefighter hidden in the rubble. She is following the wind sent and that would get her to the victim. Within seconds, she locates the hidden firefighter. There you go to see her do her job and do it properly and still enjoy, that makes me so happy. This is her reward. This is where she lives for. A four legged tool that has become invaluable and Emergency Response and a partner that has become more like family. Cassie and paul are among the many teams taking part in this weekend k9 heroes event where working dogs will be showing off their skills in everything from search and rescue to explosives detection. It runs from 10 00 a. M. Until 2 00 a. M. First alert weather now, grade conditions for fleet week festivities and our warmup has already started. Meteorologist darren peck is here tracking it all. There is a reason why fleet week happens this time of year. We will be seeking rehearsals happening across the bay here so keep your ears open. Even though the official shows are coming up friday, saturday and sunday, you will likely be hearing the blue angels over the next few days. You can see what the forecast looks like. The weather will be great. Using the virtual map and making sure that we are steering clear of the blue angels as they will be making their trip primarily over the heart of the bay. No doubt you notice today got warmer. If you were in the bay, this was the day when you noticed it. If we take a look at some of the numbers, we had temperatures climb into the mid 80s. San jose, your number having gotten to 90. We are looking at current temperatures. This time of day, we made it to the high. Lets get to the northbay. Everybody had a big jump today but it was not even. Some parts of the bay felt this change today more than others and it was here in the bay. Look at San Francisco in terms of the difference. Much warmer is it in the city right now then yesterday at this time . We went up 15, 16 degrees from where we were yesterday. If we want to see that, i can bring those numbers in and you can see the measurement. 15 degrees warmer per San Francisco. As we work our way down right through the immediate bay, this is where you really felt the jump. Granted, we are warmer today in the trivalley. You are 10 to 14 degrees warmer in the bay. We lost to the onshore influence. Those places that usually live with the benefit of the onshore influence, you really feel the bigger change on a day like this when it goes away. The next two days will get warmer for everybody. If we look at the big pattern driving all of this, there is a heat advisory. Look who they put this advisory out for, the bay. The peninsula, santa clara valley, east bayshore and the city. All of those areas in orange are under the heat advisory. You are not under a heat advisory for the inland valleys even though your temperatures will be higher. You will be warmer over here than you will in the bay but the differences, it is such a big change from what you have been used to. You will feel it more and you have not acclimated as much. It is a really important nuance to the microclimates and how they impact us in different ways. A big ridge of High Pressure showing up. The storms have to go up and over that. That blocking ridge of High Pressure is what is dominating the story and what will be keeping our temperatures above average. Lets take a look at daytime highs for tomorrow. Keep in mind as we are looking ahead to thursdays numbers, thursday and friday are our two warmest days. Northbay, mid90s. When we look at the central bay, we are getting right into the heat advisory situation. Look at redwood citys number. Half moon bay, an 80 degree temperature at the coast. That is a perfect example of this. Take a look at the numbers in the santa clara valley. Not all of that different. Temperatures in the 90s. For our warmest microclimate, temperatures climb well up into the 90s. Lets go to the 7day forecast. We will spotlight the inland valleys first. The numbers are certainly warm for the next few days but there is good news. There is a cooldown coming. You will have temperatures that go down to the mid70s with a 20 chance of rain by the time we get to tuesday. Fleet week looks great. Friday and saturday are the two best days. It will be cloudy on saturday but it should not impact the show. In just a few days, the 49ers and cowboys will be under the lights at levis stadium. A rivalry matchup has the fans and the players fired up. I can say it enough, it is cowboys week get happy. All red and no blue expected inside levis stadium for sunday night football, a game fans and players have circled since it was scheduled. I have never had more fun in football them this. Lets keep it going. The offenses having plenty of fun. They started the season with 30 or more points in four straight games for the first time in franchise history. Get your popcorn ready because the 49ers will face their toughest challenge of the season sunday night when the cowboys come to town. Everybody loves that feeling of playing on prime time. It is the cowboys. It is a big game. It will be a little extra, the history of the playoffs and the franchise. It is sunday night football. The cowboys and their fans have not had as much fun recently against the 49ers. It is not fun anymore. San francisco has eliminated dallas from the playoffs in backtoback years and they dont need any reminders this week. What was the feeling leaving the locker room last january . It is obvious. We are so far past that, to be honest i think most pet owners consider their animals to be a blessing. Now, a San Francisco church is holding a special ceremony just for pets. Pet owners and their companions gathered outside of the church on golden gate avenue today. They were mainly dogs waiting to get blessed by a franciscan friar. There were also booths offering free pet vaccinations, microchipping and giveaways. Pets were given free food as well. The blessing of the animals is an annual tradition for the church. What a special day. The cbs evening news is coming up next on kpix. The local news continues streaming on r streaming norah tonight, the battle for speaker begins. The new details as the house of representatives is without a leader and closed for business. Who could be second in line for the presidency . Here are tonights headlines
