Dianne feinstein. We look back at her career here in the bay area and on the national stage, plus how she changed american society. And paving the path of women, feinsteins role as a trailblazer. The legacy shea leaves behind is one that will be unmatched for certainly my lifetime. Recalling good morning, thanks for starting your day with us. Today is september 30th. Im max darrow. All across california and the nation, americans are remembering Dianne Feinstein, the longtime senator, former San Francisco mayor and supervisor died thursday night at the age of 90. Now everyone from politicians to journalists to her constituents are telling their stories about how she affected their lives. Im very sad, and it really makes me very grateful to have been able to cover her back to when she was mayor. I mean, she was an amazing person. She defied being put in any kind of a political box. I learned from her that you take your job seriously, you better be prepared, and you hold yourself with some dignity. Our Juliette Goodrich is on capitol hill where theres been an outpouring of emotion from those who worked alongsideher. Reporter here we are inside the nations capitol, and i can tell you today there were so many conversations about the late senator Dianne Feinstein as they all learned the news. Her career lasted a life span. And lets take a look back at what she did, starting in San Francisco. Well, i dont think the board has really done their homework when it comes to taxation. Reporter Dianne Feinsteins storied political career began in San Francisco in 1969 when she was elected to the citys board of supervisors. Feinstein would ultimately become the first woman to serve as the boards president. Hi, tom. Im dianne. Nice to know you. Reporter it would be one of many firsts for feinstein. In 1992 she made history, becoming the first woman to represent california in the u. S. Senate. In that same year, she would help Barbara Boxer win the states other senate seat in what became known as the year of the woman, setting up this iconic moment. I will never forget the night we made history. We were at the fairmont hotel, waiting to see what would happen. And dianne was a shooin, and i was certainly absolutely the underdog. Reporter retired senator Barbara Boxer would serve with feinstein until the end of boxers term in 2017. When the two of us made it, two women from the bay area, two jewish women from the bay area, it was such history. Reporter boxer says they knew because of their gender, they had to fight even harder. These guys thought women couldnt understand, you know, the gun issues, couldnt understand missile issues, couldnt understand defense issues. Reporter while feinsteins time in the senate has more recently defined her epic career what are your thoughts on what it means for our country to have women serve in meaningful numbers on the federal bench . Reporter it was before her time in washington that she was tested by violence and tragedy. In 1978 as a San Francisco supervisor, she was there when the citys mayor and a trailblazing city supervisor were murdered by another supervisor. Both mayor moscone and supervisor harvey milk have been shot and killed. Reporter a steely feinstein would guide and calm a shattered city. I became mayor as a product of assassination of the mayor being killed and the first openly gay public official being killed by a friend and colleague of mine. Shes iconic for that moment, for showing that women could lead. Shes been that way the whole time, i think just very, very calm and very measured. Reporter feinstein would take over as San Franciscos mayor, the first woman to hold the post. She would then win the job twice in two elections. While she was mayor, she earmarked more money for aids research in San Francisco than president reagan did for the entire country. Feinstein would make an unsuccessful run for governor in 1990, but even in defeat, she was resilient and went on to become californias first female u. S. Senator in 1992. Electing women senators was a big deal. And in 1992, we elected two women senators at the same time, and thats also going to be a very important part of her legacy. Reporter in her last election in 2018, she went up against then state Senate President kevin de leone. Californias Democratic Party threw their support behind him who was the more progressive candidate. Democrats made feinsteins age an issue. Progressives were dissatisfied with her practical orientation. Dianne feinstein always made a point of working with republicans to get things done. They were unhappy about that. Reporter in march of 2022, Dianne Feinstein would lose her husband, 86yearold richard blum, a crushing loss. I called her, and we talked. And she said to me, barbara, i didnt know how much my life would change and my world would change, how much i depended on him and cared about him, and she was really suffering from that loss. Reporter the loss of her husband coupled with talk of recent cognitive issues, at 89, feinstein announced her retirement in february 2023. My husband has died, and that affected the decision. Reporter senator boxer said feinstein never viewed her post in the senate as a job, she viewed it as a mission. Throughout the day and into the evening, many people bringing flowers, leaving them outside of her office. Here in washington d. C. , a memorial will be in the works. They have not announced when or where, but a lot of people plan to attend. And so many people are sharing their comments about her being a trailblazer and breaking glass ceilings, but more importantly, theyre saying that she was a friend. Thats the latest here. Im Juliette Goodrich, back to you. Thanks. Jules. Even when Dianne Feinstein was in washington, she never stopped caring about San Francisco. Mayor london breed said the senator would still contact her about issues like the upcoming apex comments and the condition of the tenderloin and says she was a huge help when covid hit. Ill always remember that during the most difficult times when things were challenging, i never had to pick up the phone and call her. She always immediately picked up the phone, she always had San Francisco top of mind. Breed is only the second woman to serve as San Francisco mayor after feinstein. Our kelsi thorud has more on how the late senator paved the way for countless other women. Reporter well, tricks continue to pour in honoring the late senator Dianne Feinstein. One word keeps being repeated, and that is trailblazer. The senators career spanned over 50 years, and during that time, she was often the first woman elected to her position. Over the decades, she has broken countless glass ceilings and inspired many of the women who are in office today. From her early days in Government Back in the 1970s, Dianne Feinstein was not shy about sharing her opinion that Women Deserve a seat in government. Women are going to play an enormous role in the destiny of the world, in the quest for peace, in the solutions to poverty and government. Reporter throughout her career, feinstein was often one of only a few women, if any, in the room but quickly became the first to rise to a position of power. In 1978, she was elected the first woman president of San Franciscos board of supervisors, and after the assassination of harvey milk and george moscone, she became the citys first woman mayor. In 1984 while still in her position as mayor, feinsteins name was floated as potentially becoming the Vice President ial candidate on walter mondales ticket. Heres a clip from an interview she did with kpix at the time where the reporter asked her if she was surprised her name was in the conversation for vp. I think if i were a man, it would be there, very much so. Ive been a good mayor, and ive done the right things for the city, and i intend to continue to do the right things for the city. Reporter feinstein was not ultimately picked as mondales running mate, but that didnt slow her down. In 1992, she was elected californias first female senator in what would become known as the year of the woman. She stayed in that position as senator for over three decades until her death, makingng heher the longestserv female senator in u. S. History. Kathleen brown, the former treasurer of california who worked with feinstein for years had this to say about her colleague and friend. Shes a legend. And her legacy is profound for the state of california. But i think greater than just the state, for women around the country and around the world. Reporter former congresswoman Jackie Speier was also a longtime friend and colleague of senator feinsteins. She simply had this to say about the senators legacy. The legacy she leaves behind is one that will be unmatched for certainly my lifetime. Reporter now, leaders across the country as well as here locally have been sharing their stories about the late senator all day. We heard from mayor breed here earlier at city hall. She shared a story where she said she actually thinks of senator feinstein still as the mayor of San Francisco, and thats because she would often call her office and give advice. Kelsi thorud reporting ahead in our next half hour, Governor Newsom pays tribute to Dianne Feinstein, but now the clock is ticking for him to appoint someone to fill the late senators seat. Well have more on that at 7 30. Switching gear, lets get a check of the weather with meteorologist paul heggan. For this last day of september, were tracking an unsettled weather pattern. Off and on showers are out there right now. Theyre going to be with us throughout the day. But this is a oneday rain chance. Storm system causing it is going to move far off to the east, warm up on sunday. Well track the showers hour by hour momentarily. The temperatures the other side of todays stories. Highs way below average, especially inland, only reaching up to the mid to upper 60s and low 70s across the entire bay area. 7 11 on this saturday morning. Still ahead on kpix and streaming on cbs news bay area, its not considered a common form of cancer, but more than 100,000 women across the United States are expected to be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer. After the break, a live interview with an east bay ob gyn about screening, prevention and mu from explosive new evidence to the deliberate ignoring of facts. What is science and archeology really revealing . Eric metaxas looks at the emerging information thats challenging the conventional narrative. get exexclusive offers on select new volvo models. Contact your volvo retailer to learn more. Welcome back. It is 7 14 on this saturday morning. September is gynecologic Cancer Awareness month. And while these cancers arent thought of as common, 106,000 women in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with one this year. We are joined this morning with a gynecologist. Lets get to the Advisory Council. Im on the Advisory Council of alliance for Womens Health and prevention. And this is a group thats really focused on getting women and girls the preventative tests they need and also does so in an equitable fashion. Okay. So lets get into gynecologic cancer. There are five different kinds. What are they . So were talking cervical, uterine, ovarian and vaginal cancers. So these are five cancers that people here in the bay area, im sure they come into your office with. Do you see patients on a routine basis who come in with these cancers . Yes. They are rarer than some other cancers that people face. But, yes, i actually had a 70yearold patient come in just last year with some itching on her vulva. Shes, like, i cant see down there, take a look. Sure enough, it was a small cancer that was biopsied, picked up. She got treat and is doing great. Im glad to hear shes doing great and you detected it early. As far as risk factor, first and foremost, who is at risk for these kinds of cancers . You know, really all women are at risk because we have these body parts. But there are some other things that put women at increased risk. So certainly women who are hispanic background, black women are slightly at increased risk as well, and then those with a family history. So i always tell women, its really important to know that family history. So this is obviously an incredibly important Womens Health issue that were talking about here this morning. We know that some of these cancers are at least somewhat preventible, correct . Yes. And Cervical Cancer is one of those. Cervical cancer can be screened. We have a great Screening Test for that which is the pap test. We do that along with hpv which is the human papilloma virus that causes Cervical Cancer. And women and young girls should be getting this Screening Test. We start at 21, actually. And its done every three years okay. I know we just put on this right here on our screen, some of just the tips in full screen here to reduce the risk. But if theres something you want people to take away, whether its young women, whether its people who are a little bit older, does that really matter . Yeah, it actually doesnt. One of the most Common Misconceptions is, oh, if im older, i dont need to see a gynecologist, and nothing could be far from the truth. We all know that our risk of cancer increases with age. So my recommendation to all women is make sure youre seeing a gynecologist every year and know that family history. So this is kind of a yearly appointment youre suggesting. Yes. Just kind of your regular preventative care. Yes, absolutely. A yearly exam for a very thorough pelvic exam and breast exam is crucial. Now, in terms of personal stories, i know we dont have more than about a minute left, but you mentioned something right before the break when we were chatting about somebody who came by when you were giving a talk about this. Talk to me about that. Yeah. So hi a booth at a festival recently, and women were walking by. I said, hi, are you interested in seeing a gynecologist. And a lot of them said, oh, that ship has sailed, or, im too old for that. Or, oh, i actually had my uterus removed, so i dont actually need to see a gynecologist. So there are a lot of women out there thinking that they dont need to see a gynecologist after a certain age, and i really urge everyone to make sure they have this appointment yearly because we can pick up things that perhaps you didnt notice. So prevention is key. And time i take it is of the essence as well . Absolutely. We can catch these cancers, cure them and patients do better. Doctor, thank you so much for joining us this morning with some really important tips and things to be on the lookout for. Thank you. Thank you so much for having me. Weve reached the end of september, and we have an unusually unsettled weather pattern in store to finish off the month. Off and on showers as we head throughout the day. Its not going to rain everywhere all the time. But where it does, you might have to adjust outdoor plans. Be flexible just in case. The showers are going to be light, but just enough to make things inconvenient for those outdoor plans. Also enough to add a little bit of moisture to the fire fields. We never complain about that. Temperatures way below normal, but clearing out, warming up tomorrow, and the warming trend is going to continue. Were talking an inland heat wave by the latter half of next week. Lets focus on the shower chances which are going to be with us off and on as we head through the rest of the day. You see that radar freckle pattern on futurecast indicating that the showers are not going to be terribly widespread, but theyre going to be out there. They could happen literally anywhere across the bay area through the rest of the day. And this evening the shower chances come to an end as the storm system moves away, and we clear out as we head through the day on sunday. How much rain are we talking about . Not much overall. A few hundredths of an inch of total rainfall, and thats not even a guarantee across the board. There are going to be plenty of spots that the showers miss individual neighborhoods across the bay area. Kind of a typical late september rain chance overall. So keep the rain gear handy if youre heading out to hardly strictly bluegrass today. Well see temperatures warming up a little bit tomorrow when the sunshine returns. By the time we get to this evening, i think the forecast will be largely dry as the giants end their series with that team from down south. Temperatures in the lower 60s if youre heading out to oracle park. Before we get to that point, though, lets take a look at todays forecast. High temperatures which are way below normal, 10 to 15 degrees below average for inland parts of the bay area, including the santa clara valley, only around 70 degrees. Mid to upper 60s for highs around the bay. Only low 60s along the coast and half moon bay. Temperatures inland in the east bay only getting up to around 70 degrees in both concord and antioch. Upper 60s for San Francisco and oakland. The warmest spots where a little more sunshine is going to peek through those clouds, the north bay, temperatures reaching up into the low 70s on a more widespread basis. Its not warm, but its the closest well see to warm temperatures as we head into the afternoon. Lets take a look at the sevenday forecast. And well start with those inland parts of the bay area that are 10 to 15 degrees below normal today. Theyre going to be close to 10 to 15 degrees above normal by the time we hit the end of the next week. Temperatures a mix of upper 80s and low 90s in the forecast. A little heat wave to usher in the end of the first week of october. Similar trend around the bay, just not quite as extreme. But even temperatures in San Francisco are likely to get up to around or above 80 degrees in San Francisco by wednesday, thursday and friday. Along the coast, you are also in for a warmup. Itll be more modest. Temperatures reaching up into the low to mid70s along the coast, and youll see plenty of sunshine, especially tuesday, wednesday and thursday before a bit of cloud cover returns for the end of the work week. Coming up the nfl is changing how it cracks down on gambling by players. How the penalties will get tougher in some cases but more lenient in others. Coming up in sports, the 49ers are big favorites against the cardinals this sunday. But will the defense be tested by a new quarterback for arizona . Plus there was a very notable absence at third and king street last night, a big change in the giants organization. Once named the National League manager of the year, the giants make the move to fire gabe cap ler, this as the team went 818 in month of september, and some players started demanding changes. Kia correa named the intlirm manager in place of kapler for the final three games of the season. The third inning giants down two. A high flyball from wilmer flores. And this one has enough distance to get over the left field wall. Wilmer drives in both of the giants runs last night. I t was still a onerun game in the sixth inning, until martinez hit a threerun shot into the left field bleachers. The dodgers go up four and put the giants away. L. A. Wins 62. And back to kapler. Heres some reaction from the players, as well as team president. As a group, as a team, we played our worst baseball when it mattered the most. I think were looking for new and different leadership in our clubhouse, different dynamic there. He wears the burden of our performance, and, you know, had a lot of fingers pointed at him when, you know, it may not necessarily have been his fault, but he was willing to wear that for us too no matter what. [ bleep ] day for giants baseball in general just because as a whole we havent done our job. To the nfl, health at the wide receiver position is a big concern right now for the 49ers. Jauan jennings is doubtful and debo samuel is listed as questionable for sundays game against the cardinals. Brandon aiyuk is good to go after missing last weeks game. The 49ers defense will be tasked with stopping cardinals qb josh dobbs. He is set to start on sunday in place of an injured kyler murray. Dobbs is a dualthreat qb. Hes rushed for more than 90 combined yards in his last two games, but the 49ers feel confident that they can slow him down. He doesnt like to slide, so you got to be ready to tackle him. Hes going to try and get extra yards like a running back, and we have to pressure him. I dont think many teams have gotten good pressure on him yet. We see how much he gonna slide, man. So well circle back sunday after the game. And as for that defense, Drake Greenlaw is also listed as questionable tomorrow. The nfl is making changes to its gambling policy, including bigger penalties for players who bet on professional football games. Under the new rules, players can be suspended for a minimum of two years if they bet on a game involving their team and at least one year for betting on other football games. They can also face a lifetime ban from the league if theyre caught attempting to fix games. And on top of that, there are changes for players caught betting on other sports as well. The nfl is reducing the suspension to two games for a first violation, six games for a second, and at least one year for a third. Three current players will be reinstated as a part of an agreement between the league and the players union. Coming up House Republicans remain divided about how to proceed on government spending. As their wrangling continues, a Government Shutdown is looming lambing. Also ahead, Governor Newsom is now under pressure to make a quick decision about the late senator Dianne Feinsteins replacement. Why he may be in a nowin situation. Its a big deal. Its a very big deal. Its important that while we are grateful and reflect on her impact in california politics in our lives, we also get that position filled. And heres a live look outside at san jose on this saturday morning. Lets get over to your cbs deals. Hi, everyone. I have just picked up something i have been so looking forward to getting. This is called the blade made. If you have ever tried to clean your ceiling fans, you know it is not always the easiest place to get to. So much dust collects on the top of the fan, and its blowing all over your house. Its really not the best thing. This is going to solve that problem. So easy to put together and retractable. So this is going to extend or retract so you can reach those high fans, you can get all the dust off and know that you are breathing in dustfree air. Also when youre done with the fan, you can unlock the top here, and then you can use the blade made for other hardtoreach places. Maybe youre bending down, and you want to get the floorboards, or if you have tall cabinets, anything you cant reach, you dont want to grab the step stool, quickly dust, and you are done. Another thing i love about it is you can take off the pads, throw them in the washing machine and reuse them as many times as you want. So really a great device to have. When youre not using it, it folds up nice and small, put it in the closet, you are good to go. The deal right now is so great, 30 off right now on cbsdeals. Com. Why didnt we do this last year . In washington lawmakers cant reach a deal, meaning federal agencies could close and critical employees may be asked to work without pay. Cbs correspondent Bradley Blackburn has the latest. The bill is not passed. Reporter even a measure that would have prevented a goin temporarily failed yesterday as a divide between republican members remains wide open. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy couldnt get farright members to back the bill. If you quit after the first time, i dont its only a failure if you quit. Or the clock runs out. Reporter the clock does run out at midnight on saturday, and a shutdown appears all but certain. Imminent, inevitable. Its gonna happen. Reporter the effects would be felt all across the country, Border Patrol agents, air Traffic Controllers and 1. 3 million military members could all go without pay. Alice silver is the wife of a coast guard petty officer. A pay check being missed is a big problem. Reporter farmers who rely on data from the u. S. Department of agricultural are concerned. Benefits for people who rely on them is going to be catastrophic, honestly. Reporter in the senate, a bipartisan plan under consideration would keep the government open until midnovember and include funding for ukraine. Speaker mccarthy has rejected it. After a shutdown government exwees would get back pay, but contractors like maintenance and cafeteria workers would not. Members of congress would continue, however, to be paid throughout. Switching gears, lets get a quick check of the weather with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggan. Hey, paul. For this last day of september, were tracking an unsettled weather pattern. Off and on showers are out there right now. Theyre going to be with us throughout the day. But this is a oneday rain chance. Senator, an early voice for gun control, a leader in times of tragedy and chaos, but to me she was a dear friend, a lifelong mentor and a role model, not only for me, but to my wife and daughters for what a powerful effective leader looks like. But now the governor has to appoint whats called a caretaker who will hold her seat through next years election. As da lin tells us, its not going to be ash easy choice for the governor. Reporter elected Officials Say its important to take the time to remember and mourn the passing of senator feinstein. But they say its also important for the governor to quickly appoint a successor. This oakland political anaylist suggests governor gavin newsom is facing a big dilemma. Its a big deal, its a very big deal because there arent that many senate seats available. Reporter newsom had previously said he would appoint a black woman, but not representative barbara lee of oakland since shes running for Feinsteins Senate seat. Polls have showed lee trailing her two opponents, representatives katie porter and adam schiff. If you give her the appointment, then she kind of leaps over everybody else. Reporter heres what newsom said on meet the press two weeks ago. That primary is just a matter of months away. I dont want to tip the balance of that. Reporter but youre going to bye bye it would be essentially a caretaker, an African American woman . We hope we never have to make this decision, but i abide by what ive said very publicly on a consistent basis, yes. Reporter east bay congressman is supporting lee for the senate run. He says its important knewsome newsom acts quickly. Its a difficult choice. Its a difficult choice for the governor because we got a lot of talented people. Reporter feinstein sat on the Judiciary Committee which approves president joe bidens judicial nominees. Without her, democrats might not be able to get any more federal judges through congress this term. We lose any votes for any period of time, and the republicans have votes, then you get you dont have the power of the majority. So its important to fill that position on judiciary. Reporter south bay congresswoman anna eshu supports adam schiff for the senate. She says newsom has the right. Approach. I think he will make a good call. I trust his values, and i think whomever he chooses as a caretaker will do everything they can to represent california well. Reporter a spokesperson for newsom said on friday no information yet on when or who the governor will appoint. That was da lin reporting. I n other news this morning, an arrest in the murder of rapper and music icon tupac shikur nearly two decades after his death. Cbss Jonathan Vigliotti reports the suspect has been long linked to the 1996 shooting. Today justice will be served in the murder of tupac shakur. Who needs some more bags . Reporter vincent started the group reuse sz f in 2021. His Grassroots Campaign spread throughout the city. Volunteer teams regularly tackle some of the filthiest street, like a stretch of masonic avenue in Laurel Heights where syringes often get swept up. There used to be trash everywhere, tents, graffiti, and now we take care of it. Its much, much less. Reporter in fact, when they first started, volunteers would collect more than 2,500 pieces of trash along a section of masonic, their weekly visits show theyve cut down debris by 80 , and thats good for the whole neighborhood. Our lauren thom says an october event she helped put in place begins in just a couple of days from now. Reporter the legacy of Dianne Feinstein can be seen across San Francisco everyday. My greatest obligation is to this city. Reporter a champion for the city, feinstein had a pattern of saving or starting cherished traditions, from cable cars on the hills to fleet week in the bay. When she would board a ship and how excited she would be, shaking hands with the marines and the sailors who would come in, just watching their faces and watching her smile as it glowed through, and she shook hand with each and every one of them. Reporter louis lovan has been on board of San Franciscos fleet week for 10 years. But this will be the first time the event will take place without its founder. But i can look out on the San Francisco bay, see the ships, see the flights taking place at the air show and also all of the community events. And so for me, i will be looking at this and thinking this is the person who started all of this. Reporter in 1981, feinstein brought fleet week to San Francisco as a celebration of our armed forces. But the fate of the militarys presence at fleet week still looms in the backdrop as a Government Shutdown could send military assets home. But just hours before her passing, she cast what would be her final vote in the senate, a vote to continue government funding and avoid a shutdown. Its an example of feinstein staying the course, a mantra she shared with mayor london breed, feinsteins only female mayoral successor. She was casting votes on the senate floor yesterday. This is what she wanted to do. She wanted to fulfill her obligation that she made to the people of the state of california. Reporter feinstein used that mantra, staying the course in her efforts to save the citys cable car system in the late 70s, securing millions in federal funding to keep the system running. Around the same time in 1978, feinstein used her bold win to secure the opening of pier 39. In golden gate park, the memories of her and her late husband, richard blum live on through the bison at the panic where park manager Phil Ginsburg says there is still a love of hers for the city. This very quirky feature of americas greatest urban park exists in part because of the love and stewardship of the senator. Dianne feinstein loved these bison. You can actually see it and think of her when youre here. Reporter this year fleet week will go on by way of the legacy of Dianne Feinstein, a testament to her nature of staying the course and her eternal love for San Francisco. And we might also have feinstein to thank for the most famous moment in 49er history.
