Union votes announced this morning. Joycelyn moran breaks down what theyre asking for. Reporter all morning we had been waiting for results of a key vote on whether city workers would go on a three day strike. We have the results. Two unions, members with unions have voted to go on strike august 15 through 17th. Striking is a last resort. Our hope is City Council Members and the mayor will finally listen to us and address under staffing crisis impacting libraries, the airport, affordable housing, Emergency Response times, and more. If they dont, we are ready tostring for our services. Reporter city workers say theyre under staffed and are asking for better pay. The contract expired june 30 and theyve been working without one since. Workers are asking for an increase of 7 for the 202324 fiscal year. The city countered with a counter offer of a 5 raise. City workers said its hard to live in san jose with the high costs including housing. We have been on this ride to the point where we cant continue to support ourselves and our community with the resources weve got. Weve been in there sticking it out with the city and weve reached the point where we cant any more. Reporter the mayor understands high costs of living but going beyond the 5 would require trade offs like reducing library hours, hiring fewer police officers, paving fewer miles of road. I am not willing to cut Core Services to make unsustainable increases. Reporter he also says there is no doubt a large scale strike will have an impact on services for residents. He says he thinks the right answer is to go back to mediation. These bargaining units that held out didnt take mediation seriously. We had one meeting and they walked out without offering Significant Movement or creative ideas. I have suggested for example that in years two and three if revenue is higher than we project, we should automatically give a higher raise. Reporter unions represent about 45 workers. That includes code enforcement, emergency dispatch, air force staff, engineers. We will be learning more as to how other services in the city of san jose will be affected but again this three day strike was authorized august 15 through the 17th. Thanks. Its back to school week for most of the bay area and students in oakland were among first to head back to the classroom. Much different compared to this spring when teachers went on strike a few weeks before the end of the school year. They were able to negotiate a new contract before finals week and the superintendent told us shes glad everyone can focus on moving forward. You always have to look forward. You always have to have a spirit of optimism and hope even with a lot of the challenges, everyones heart is how to improve things. That will continue to be our focus. The teachers reached a deal but it wasnt just about salaries, class sizes, and staff. They agreed to four common good proposals. Those include housing and transportation help for unhoused or low income students, shared Decision Making on spending grant money, more School Support for at least 40 of the students are black and specific protocols to follow before closing a school. Switching gears, lets go to meteorologist jessica burch. You know its a good day when you can see the golden gate. Yeah, thats the reason i wore red today.
