Against this third indictment. Justin . And Hazardous Materials found inside hundreds of boxes in someones backyard here in san pablo. Im Justin Andrews and the details on what we know so far coming up. And its another cool and cloudy day here in the bay area. But we have a big warmup with triple digits within the next couple of days and ill tell you where thats going to happen coming up in your first alert forecast. If you are in the east bay right now, heading over to the city keep in mind we have an accident that we have want to talk about. And as you can see its creating some heavy backup there. We have the details coming right up. But first, we are taking a live look from our camera on top of Black Mountain looking at that sunrise right there. Beautiful morning for us. But it is also a chilly morning. No matter where you live. Yeah. I learned that this morning. I usually dont need a jacket and i definitely needed one with the dog this morning. Absolutely and you live off in the east bay. Im in San Francisco. With its jacket weather yearround and i still havent fully grasped that concept yet. But later this afternoon temperatures stay below average no matter the north bay or the coast or even down into the santa clara valley, all dealing with below average cool chillty temperatures for us this morning and temperatures right now actually sitting in the upper 50s anywhere from livermore into San Francisco. Pretty much hand in channel right now. 534 in the heart of santa rosa where along our coastline were seeing a little bit of drizzle in the forecast for us. The dense clouds come into livermore and pulls back in the afternoon hours and at that point hayward north into richmond a little bit of cloud coverage but really where it stays dense of course its our coastline. Weve been seeing that all week long but lets head back over into livermore where daytime highs today are only warming up to 75 degrees. I mean weve been dealing with recordbreaking heat down to the southwest, but look at this number. I mean, its cool for us here in the bay area. Even off and in some of the warmer spotlight livermore for that matter. So later today here in the bay, heres what were going to warm up to this afternoon. 60s in sight for us just along our coast. All the way off into the bay area. Once we head into the inland areas thats where were going to see some 80s and 70s in the forecast. We have one more cool day and thats today and once we head into the weekend that heat dome really starts to build its way in. Notice it mostly off in the east inland hills where for now were still in the 80s. But right around the corner we do hit the triple digits. Jocelyn . All right jess. Be sure to enjoy todays temperatures before that starts to get warmer this weekend. Now we do want to talk about this accident here on the bay bridge. This is on fail just at the bay bridge toll plaza there but you can see that red and orange there . It is creating a bit of a backup there. You are looking at about a 10, 11 minute drive from the toll plaza over into the city. But we can imagine that that backup may get a little bit worse, we will keep updating you as far as that accident and how things are looking as far as the toll plaza over into the city. Over at the this is a better look here. You can see that backup a little bit as that morning progresses. And as people head out the door, but again we will keep you updated on that drive time. At the Golden Gate Bridge, a little bit of a clearer image compared to the last couple of days as far as the fog. You are looking at about a 20 minute drive from highway 37 over to the bridge. All right, back re in the bay area, mandatory evacuation orders are stilin place this morning after a Hazardous Material incident in san pablo. So means were out of theiall night long. Everyone in the six block radius was evacuated including part of giant highway, miner avenue and 11th street and palmer avenue. Justin andrews has been live near where that area is and justin, weve seen crews there all morning long really busy scene for this neighborhood this morning. Reporter yeah, amanda, actually the scene has picked up within the last 20 minceur so. Step out of the sane to shea you that you know hazmat truck arrived here about 20 minutes ago. You can see actually extended some type of device in the air here. At this hour they are still trying to figure out exactly what those Hazardous Materials were found inside the backyard of a home right here on this block. Keep in mind, this material was something that really raised a red flag for them. They had to quickly rush most of that material out of the neighborhood on yesterday. Again, at this hour, no word on exactly what is inside those boxes. Thats something were going to try to confirm this morning with crews at least at some point. We have learned that the person at the house where the incident happened is a retired chemistry professor who had stored some chemical supplies in a shed for quite a while and the chemicals had likely become unstable. We know he is cooperating with authorities at least at this hour, hazmat crews brought in the special equipment on yesterday to examine the containers in that shed to help try to figure out exactly whats in there. And obviously that part of the investigation is still going on. Because crews have returned out here at 5 00 this morning. We do know that people in the neighborhood were directed to Contra Costa CountyCommunity College for a shelter and we know the red cross is assisting evacuees and some people told us they didnt waste any time getting out of their homes yesterday. We were coming home. And we came home the usual way. Down 11th street. And then we saw all these ambulances and fire trucks and police cars and then we had an emergency on our cell phone as we got on 11th street. All right, so no word yet on exactly what these chemicals are. Theres also no word on any charges if any that that chemist will face. Again, the investigation is still under way and crews are still out here on scene and activity picked up within the last 20 minutes. So we should maybe get some details throughout the morning and as we do well pass them along to you certainly. Thank you so much. What an inconvenience for so many people there. California is a Human Trafficking hotspot with victims forced all the kinds into situations. But over a dozen trafficking victims were rescued right here in the bay area. Over two weeks in july, local Law Enforcement agencies worked with the fbi to carry out 17 operations. They arrested nine people linked to trafficking. There are kids that are living in our communities, that are living in our streets, and they are not for sale. The bay area has led the way in developing techniques to investigate and disrupt this activity. Operation crosscountry started here in the bay area. But the end of that operation is just the beginning of a long road to recovery for the victims. Our Andrea Nakano spoke with a survivor turned advocate in Sonoma County who hopes things go better for those women than they did for her. When i was 26, i was arrested for the last time and i had a 3monthold baby boy that i needed to think about. And at that time, i realized i needed to end the cycle that was within my family. Reporter Elizabeth Quiroz says she met her trafficker when she was just 16 years old and it began with a stranger first giving her compliments then gifts. Then a hope of a better life than what she was experiencing at home. But it just led to a life of crime and trauma. At the time of my the point of contact of me being arrested, there was no services. I was treated as a criminal. And looked down upon because of course i was an addict and i was you know, selling drugs and smoked my own supply because of all the years of trauma and being trafficked. Reporter quiroz is applauding the fbis latest operation crosscountry that helped locate four children and 17 adults. She feels the key to really reaching the victims is to provide the right type of resources. Important that we continue to bring advocates and we continue to even survivors to be a part of those situations. Where the victims can relate. They can understand because theyre not going to talk to somebody thats in a uniform. Reporter thats why quiroz cofounded redemption house to give victims the support and tools they need to turn their lives around. Well, once they realize you know, like that the power is theirs. Once they get out of that life and they realize that their power is theirs and their voice is theirs, theyll start to be able to be set free from all that. Reporter quiroz says the resources she was provided behind bars truly changed her life. She is now a social worker with a masters degree and her focus is now to help others. She is rewarded with each victim she saves. A lot of times, their traffickers are not prosecuted or arrested or their abusers goes unnoticed. I tell them just keep sharing and keep speaking and it will a be a form of justice so you can get that proper healing. So it helps me too when i do this. Now in our other top stories. Its really chilly out there for everyone whos about to head out the door. Grab the coffee and grab the warm tea whatever you do, please grab the jacket while you are at it too. It is off to a cool start this morning. Clouds starting to clear up though at the Golden Gate Bridge, a beautiful drive in from marin county if you are heading out there. Within the next couple of minutes. Take a look at that American Flag, its a little breezier out there right now too. We have the onshore flow and daytime highs today are actually topping off in the 60s from the coast into the bay and only 80s in the inland areas at max. I mean, it is a mild forecast for us today. As were waking up and heading out the door and the onshore flow is going to get a lot gustier this afternoon. That stays consistent for us later into teening hours tonight. All the way into lunchtime. Here we go into the 2 00 hour about 30mileperhour winds just near bodega bay and we have low pressure offshore and thats been keeping us nice and cool for now. The later into this week i should say into to weekend at this point because were wrapping up this weekend. The area of High Pressure to the southwest the heat dome really impacting las vegas and phoenix and even southern california. Its slowly nudging its way towards us. So these below average temperatures we have today not going to be the case for too much longer. But hey, enjoy them while we have them right . I mean, ten degrees below average along pacifica and definitely jacket weather over there. But the inland east bay below average temperatures and you know what that means for us . That means dog walking weather and trail walking weather and just getting out there and maybe taking your bike out of the garage for the first time in quite some time weather. Its beautiful for us heading into this afternoon. Even down into the santa clara valley. With sunshine later today. And 70s all anywhere from morgan hill over into santa clara. In the east bay, brentwood, our usual suspect for warmer temperatures is actually below average today in the low 80s. Oh. Beautiful and mild but it is chilly and cool along our coastline. 60s expected for us today in the heart of San Francisco. We have cool weather today but we will warm up fast heading into the weekend. I mean were talking about 80s today and tomorrow. Just for concord where theres a beautiful sunrise right now if you have the opportunity, take a look out the window. Stunning. 80s for now and triple digits as we head into the weekend forecast. Notice how that is the case all throughout the inland east bay, a warm oner us this leek. Plenty of sunshine there. Partly cloudy skies still sticking around for the coastline. In San Francisco where we warm up into the 70s this weekend. Just to return right back down to average in the low 60s mid and upper 60s by next week. We have a very similar setup into wine country. Well have moreen that in a bit. For now jocelyn how are the roads . We are seeing an accident this is as you make your way to the bay bridge here over into the city. This is on 80 westbound again about in the area of the toll plaza here. Those metering lights are on. So you are seeing a little bit of a backup there. In part also because of this crash here. The center lanes are blocked so expect some delays in and around that area you are looking at about an is 11 drive there from the maze to the city there. As far as this is another accident that we want to talk about. The number three lane is blocked because of a crash on highway 4. This is eastbound right before the railroad avenue exit. You are looking at about 35 minute drive if you are going westbound on highway 4 from antioch over to hercules there. And for our supercommuters, that drive time is just getting worse and worse. You are looking at about 72 minute drive from 205 over to 680. Well, San Francisco is celebrating 150 years of cable cars rolling through the city. Mayor london breed gave senator feinstein a shoutout for securing funding to save them in the late 70s when she was mayor. The 90yearold was no show yesterday, her rep says the senator has a cold. We did dig through our archives and found this footage we shot in october of 1981. Then mayor feinstein convinced mick jagger to join her on a cable car. The rocker tried his best. This is part of San Francisco. So you know, if it wasnt here anymore. They would be gone and once theyre gone you cant put them back. Thats the trouble. Its perfect because you know you can walk down and not always walk up the hill. This is perfect for it right . So without them you know, youd have to be a bit more walking and parking and its really dull. So i think these are wonderful things and they still do work. They just need updating a bit. The standard oil a million then another check and go home right . Yes, right. The two of them got a little giggly at the end. The stones were in town to promote their album tattoo you. Where former President Trump will make his first Court Appearance in a second federal case brought by special counsel jack smith. Expected to enter a not guilty plea for four felony counts. What the president wants to do is absolutely defend himself on these baseless charges. Reporter yesterday the 2024 gop president ial candidate was spotted on the golf course at his new jersey club. Trump has repeatedly slammed the indictment as election interference and last night, he suggested on social media the trial should be moved from here in washington to the state of west virginia. Sources say trumps legal team is preparing to argue that the former president s false claims about the 2020 election were not criminal. And that he was following the advice of outside attorneys at the time. Some of whom are believed to be among the six unnamed coconspirators mentioned in the 45 page indictment. Trumps former Vice President and 2024 rival mike pence gave hours of testimony to the grand jury. Sadly, the president was surrounded by group of crack pot lawyers that kept telling him what hissishing ears wanted to hear. Reporter meanwhile security remainings tight at the courthouse and nearby capitol. Police say they are prepared for quote, whatever might happen. The former president was given the option whether to appear virtually or inperson. But even if he is here inperson its very unlikely were going the see him. No cameras are allowed and theres also an underground tunnel here where they can bring the former president in and out of the courthouse. Again he is expected to plead not guilty later today. Topnotch security there. Any word on whats happening behind the scenes with the trump camp . And any reaction weve heard from him on this. Reporter yes, he is adamant that he did nothing wrong. He denies doing anything wrong and he also went on social media overnight where he shared that hes calling this an election interference. Saying that he believes this trial should be moved from washington, d. C. To the state of west virginia. Little chilly outside grab the jacket and i definitely needed mine out in walnut creek this morning. Which i usually dont. This time of year. Yeah. And i need mine yearround in the heart of San Francisco. Its just the bay it is right . All of the microclimates though today whether you live in the east bay or even off into San Francisco. All below average. A nice cool day as low pressure parked just offshore but the next couple of days the heat dome down to the south really impact us actually. So daytime highs eight around the corner theyre going to start warming up and lets start off today across the bay though. Starting to see clear skies just over the Golden Gate Bridge. A little bit breezy out there right now. 61 today just along our coast and 60s in the heart of the bay and 80s in the east inland hills at max. I mean, today were sitting nice and cool as that system still offshore. And its also allowing for some windier conditions and im not sure if you saw that northwestern flag just at the Golden Gate Bridge. But it is breezing in the wind right now. Later into this afternoon were going to see wind gusts along the coastline i mean anywhere up to around 30 Miles Per Hour. The usual suspects bodega bay and San Francisco, staying breezy into the 2 00 hour. Here we go into dinner time tonight. Even catch it off into concord and livermore close to around 20, 25mileperhour winds there. Its clear skies over in concord right now and daytime highs over there today theyre sitting in the low 80s. Tomorrow were going to hit the upper 80s and then suddenly just into this weekend, now were going to be talking about triple digits. Why is that happening . Well, that heat dome thats really impacting the southwest right now slowly going to stretch to us and thats going to warm us up and dry us up a lot heading into this weekend. Quite a contrast compared to the below average temperatures. For now over to you jocelyn. Lets talk about a couple of accidents that we are monitoring. One is on highway 4 unfortunately we are getting reports of injuries with this one. This is westbound east of san joaquin county. That line there. This is near byron and brentwood. The right hand shoulder is blocked right before the Discovery Bay boulevard exit. You can expect delays in and around that area as well. Overall not too bad. At the altamont pass, you are seeing some heavy traffic that drive time is getting worse and worse as the morning progresses. Already a 73 minute drive from 205 over to 680. Developing right now, hazmat crews ba on the scene this morngin san pablo r hundreds of boxes of Hazardous Materials found in a backyard shed. This mandatory evacuations in a six block radius including palmer avenue and giant highway. This means the people were out of their homes all night long. Justin andrews live there now for us this morning. And justin, do we have any clue of what is actually this Hazardous Material . Reporter amanda, thats right [ no audio ] answer to. But if we can walk you through the scene here this morning, you can take a look. You can see the scene is actually picked up within the last several minutes. You can see that hazmat truck up there and you can see that pole thats sticking up . Were told those are cameras and they can look through buildings and walls. Thats what theyre trying to uncover exactly what these materials were found in that shed here. We do know the person who owns the house is a retired chemist. Let me walk you through the latest. Special equipment was brought in to examine the containers found in that backyard shed. Really help them try to figure out what the material is. How dangerous that material could potentially be. The person at the house there as i said is a retired chemist professor who stored some of the chemical supplies in a shed for a very long time. And chemicals had likely become unstable. Were told he is cooperating with authorities though. No word on charges if any that chemist could be facing. People who live in the neighborhood, they were directed to the Contra Costa CountyCommunity College gym for safety and shelter. Pretty scary and uneasy for people who live in the area, even for young people. It feels like its covid all over again. Lot of people with masks and stuff. And we have to like stay inside. I want to go home. Reporter all right. So some people told us they quickly raced from this neighborhood when they were alerted about this. Obviously pretty scary situation for neighbors who live in this area. We do know the red cross is assisting those people at that gym as they seek that shelter. Back over to you. All right. Thank you so much. It is 6 37. The job cuts keep on coming in the tech industry. What were learning this morning about layoffs at salesforce. Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger joins us from new york to discuss whats expected and how the postpandemic labor market has defied expectations. Jill, just to start off in the first half of the year the economy averaged 278,000 jobs a month. So do you think july will come in at that level . Reporter probably not. If we go back to june, we had a 209,000 gain and it was the weakest since december 2020. Most analysts believe there will be a continued deceleration. Probably around lets call it 185,000 jobs in july. And that is purposeful. Thats what the fed wants to see. Unemployment rate should come in at 3. 6 and still within a pretty tight range of 3. 4 to 3. 7 . Thats been the last year and a half. Very big focus for the Federal Reserve will be wages. Now they want to see annual earnings slow down because that contributes to inflation. So we are expecting a two year low of 4. 2 in annual wage growth. That would be fine because with inflation at 3 if you are making 4. 2 more, you are doing okay. You say some early pandemic era worries are behind us. Tell us about women actually in the work force. Reporter yeah, during the pandemic, we were worried that there was something that we were calling a shesession right. That working women would see a permanent deterioration of their financial fortunes because they were out of the work force. Well, heck, it was amazing as of june, the employment rate for women in their prime working years, this is defined by the Labor Department as 25 to 54. Dont yell at me. It was the highest on record. Prime age men, theyre back to prepandemic levels. But they have not reached a record. So women back in the work force in big, big numbers. Thats great to see. So we also heard about early retirement and amid covid. How has that all panned out . Reporter well, its kind of interesting. If you look at workers who were 55 to 64, they returned back to the job just as fast as younger workers. In fact, if you look at that age group that 55 to 64, they are now employed at a higher rate than before the pandemic. But you know what has not come back . Is the people who were over the age of 65. They have not come back to work in large numbers and thats despite the fact that there has been high inflation. So the theory on this might be that a lot of those people received Social Security benefits. And Social Security benefits are indexed to inflation. So they had a little bit of extra money and main they didnt feel like they had to go back to work. But hey the work force needs you. Go on back to work if you can. Good to see. Jill, thanks so much for that insight of what we can expect for tomorrow with the july report. Thanks so much. For more analysis you can go to jillonmoney. Com. Back here . Down on planet earth. Speaking of the skies we can see them right now. Just over the Golden Gate Bridge. Its kind of shocking. I mean weve been talking about this marine layer holding on tight to the coast and dont get me wrong it is. But next to the Golden Gate Bridge thats where were seeing the sunnier conditions. A little breezy. Look at the American Flag light there. Anywhere up to around 20, even 30mileperhour winds gusts along the coast.
