Reporter do you know how many places that picture went . No. Reporter it was a lot. It was a lot. I think it really helped put clarity on something that was difficult for people to understand. Reporter if there was any doubt that covid has deepened americas hunger crisis, that picture dispelled it. Folks at the san antonio food bank, as well as its hundreds of volunteers, like paul drummond, havent seen the lines stop yet. You know, its the kind of thing that you keep thinking it is going to be over, and not only is it not over, but the need just grows. There you go. Reporter there had been thousands of other food distributions all across the country. Just this past week, this massive one in dallas ft. Worth. But many of the people have never asked for food before. What would you do without them, do you think . Well, start growing my own food in the backyard, probably laughing . We are relying, too much, on the charity food system. Reporter Diane Schanzenbach is the director for the institute of policy research at northwestern university. She found in the first few months of the pandemic, the number of americans who didnt have enough to eat surged from around eight million to nearly 30 million. This has revealed some big holes in our safety net. But theyre holes that congress can fix. Reporter since the pandemic had started, as many as seven million peel people have enrolled in the governments food program, now called snap. She says they need a 15 increase in those benefits to survive. But negotiations over the next covid relief package is stalled in a lameduck congress.
