Tracy smith sets the scene. Reporter if you think that feeding hungry people is hard work, try doing it in a war zone. Somewhere in the world every minute of the day the people at the u. N. World food program are trying to keep millions from starving to death. Out here its a brutally simple equation conflict equals hunger, and hunger equals more conflict. And thats without a worldwide pandemic. Clearly covid19 has made a bad situation worse. This virus, it hurts the poor people more than anybody else. Reporter when you u. N. World food program chief David Beasley took charge three years ago, he says he had 100 million hungry people to feed. But now were talking about 135 to 270 Million People. Im not talking about going to bed hungry. Im talking about people literally marching towards starvation. Thats why weve got to get ahead of this thing and do it right. Reporter and doing it right starts with getting peoples attention. Two years ago, actress kate hudson was appointed world food ambassador, visiting places like cambodia to raise awareness and to help hungry people feed themselves. What made you so compassionate about it . Its endless. When you start getting involved with it, it is just, like, one of those things youre just hooked. It is not, like, oh, i hope we have a find. We have a cure. There is a cure. The cure is that the food we have it. It is there and available. So its really about how we get there. You know . Reporter and you might say charity runs in her blood. Her mother, goldie hawn, founded her own nonprofit to help children, but kates fight against hunger took on new meaning when she became a mother herself and met a struggling mom in cambodia. There was a mother, that was one of the mothers of a child in the school. And she had just had a baby. And i said, how are you feeling . And she was, like, ooh and you realize as mothers, the first thing we do with our babies is we would do anything to feed them. And when that goes wrong, i mean, you cant explain it if you dont know what that feels like, if you cant give your baby milk, if youre not producing. It is a fundamental fear if we cannot feed our children. I have to go home. You are home. Reporter it is hard to say exactly when kate hudson became a household name. It might have been after her oscarnominated turn in penny lane. Im going to live in morocco for one year. Reporter she said she always knew she would do some good in the world and being famous would help. What do you hope you can do by joining forces . I try to be very real about this. I have a couple of things my personal heart and drive, thats one thing. But i have a platform, and, you know, ive got millions of people that follow me on my instagram, and i can have this opportunity to talk with you about it, you know . And so i hope that what this can do is bring a lot of so much awareness and that i can be a part of that in any way. The covid pandemic has created chaos and disrupted the supply chain all over the world. Reporter by all accounts, it has been a brutal year for the w. F. P. , but there is have been a few bright spots. They managed to lodge the largest humanitarian response in their history. I didnt win it. You won it. Reporter and last month the staff was stunned, really stunned, to find out theyve been awarded the 2020 nobel peace prize. It is the first time in my life ive been without words. Reporter tell me about that moment when you found out . I was out in the middle of niger, and somebody came busting into our meet and says, nobel peace prize. And im, like, who won it . And they were, like, we did. That was the greatest surprise in my life. And wow, wow, wow. Reporter of course, awards dont feed hungry people, and celebrities dont solve World Problems by themselves, but they can convince others to open their hearts and their pocketbooks. To kate hudson, thats the role of a lifetime. Is there any comparison between the satisfaction of playing a great role, doing a great movie, and the satisfaction that you get out of helping out with w. F. P. . No. No. It is a totally different feeling when someone feels connected our happy based on something that you played than when you realize youre helping someone just live, and when you see someone suffering of something that is as simple as a little bit of food, its just you can help that, and there is no greater kind of contribution, i think, than being able to at least try to help as many people as you can.
