We have gotten through the overnight hours and the period with the potential for the most lightning there we have had a few Lightning Strikes across the bay area but not a lot. Most of it was in the Central Valley and the pacific. There is still rain. Look at the showers. Actually, there is more good news because it has been light rain. But when you start to get into the bands of yellow and orange, and into mendocino, that is an example of this lightning. That potential will stay with us until 10 00 this morning. Not to mention, the red flag warning is in effect until 5 00 this evening because of the wind that can still be an issue and there is the issue with that. We are not out of the woods yet but we have gotten through the worst part of the evening in terms of where we would have seen the potential for the most widespread issues with lightning. So here is the forecast. Once the shower was clear out of the north bay, it is just going to be us and the smoke. There will be a lot of smoke, just like yesterday. The air quality will be unhealthy. Daytime highs will be in the mid90s if you are in mind. We are in the mid to upper 70s in the bay. I will show more on the seven day forecast in a bit. For now, lets go back over to you. Now to the czu complex fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. 77,000 evacuees have been warned to stay out of evacuation zone and over the weekend, the fire claimed its first to death, an elderly man found in the burn zone. At last check, the flames had grown to 74,000 acres in santa cruz and san mateo counties. There is 8 containment and 163 structures that have burned. Are about to get an update from fire officials that are speaking any moment now. Lets take a listen in. Theyre not speaking just yet. Will get to that as soon as they begin. Michelle . We are going to check in with emily in just a bit and she is in morgan hill talking about those evacuations right now. Okay, here is emily turner. Yeah, there has been quite a bit of activity overnight. This was a regular neighborhood and now it is an evacuation zone. You can see the checkpoint right here behind me. This has been very active. It is not as much in the last 10 minutes. There were half a dozen Police Officers coming in and out, talking to people and making sure that they were getting out of their homes. There are evacuations in effect east of morgan hill, which is o overnight trying to get out. Police set up this area around thomas grade and done the road and they are entering the neighborhoods and leaving as well. They want to make sure they are getting out. We have had plenty of time to think about the evacuation process as the fires have burned closer and closer over the last week. We talked to several people who say they have been thinking about what they are going to take with them on the last possible day so they can go and get out quickly when they need to. We are somewhat apprehensive about what to do but we have been planning the last few days. Our vehicles parked elsewhere and our neighborhood right next to us, they have all left about three or four days ago. If you are in this area east of morgan hill, here is what you need to know as far as the expanded evacuation zones. The evacuation warning will include east of pete road to coyote creek and south of eagleview drive and north of half road for those of you leaving do not have summer to go. There are Evacuation Centers that have been set up in one of them is in milpitas at the library which is on main street and another is in this high school have several options if you want to make sure you get out and also they want to make sure that everyone who goes to those evacuation zones is safe and is socially distance. You will not leave an evacuation zone in into a situation where you have to worry about the coronavirus. Fire officials are speaking about the czu fire lets listen to that right now. From the 231 structures, they have been destroyed throughout santa cruz and san mateo counties. More specific breakdowns of that. We are continuing to see the increase of firefighters arriving every day and were up to 1500 firefighters from the federal, state, and local government, including ones from outofstate. Thing to notice there was an evacuation warning at one santa clara county. That warning went out with an abundance of caution based on the potential lightning and storms that were forecasted for yesterday. We do not believe there is any amendment threat. I just wanted to help clarify that because they are in paulding county. With that, i think it is time t 24 hours, we have had a red flag when we had the opportunity where the weather has been better and it has given us an opportunity for crews to make a lot of progress throughout this fire. We are in the north zone. A lot of it is some good work. You can see this on the line. This has been verified. There is a good set of control on the north end of the fire and through the entire north end and on the coast. Some of the fires are in effect right here. There is an increase in humidity and they are seeing results. That is very good. From davenport, we have not seen any movement and the fire is still hung up the top. We need to get more resources and we will go directly up there but we have good control in and around that community. On the south end of the fire, we have continued to improve the control lines along the south end. It is from highway 9 and there is a secondary line that we put in. We did a burn operation in this area and that improved our airline tremendously. So it created a very good control line to the south and a secondary. That really put an excellent protection in for santa cruz and d. C. Campus. We will see. We are very confident that these lines are going to hold moving up into this area, they are well up on the ridge and looking pretty good and we foresee more precaution. There is a red flag warning and the thing about that, we have been able to establish certain lines and we are still establishing lines as robust. They are not as robust as we want them to be. We are trying to keep the fire in check. We are doing we are trying to push over the fire like we said before. It is not the kind of line we would traditionally put in. It is not so robust and solid. Therefore, due to the extremely rugged terrain and lots of ravines and canyons, and drainages, it is difficult for us to work. It is not how would traditionally establish our lines. They give us the best advantage but we deal with what we are dealt. Will give it our best shot based on that and we will work with what we put in and the best weekend. As a result of that acks. Isinre threatth the community. People might see a little more flames and so forth. Youre going to see that because there is rugged terrain and we are trying to put those lines and and it will take time. There has to be a bit of patience. But any flareups we do that, we move our resources back there and fall back when we can and take care of these things on the steep terrain and we go back up into the area. We are going to see that. It is something we can easily start mitigating and keep it from getting further down onto the highway 9 corridor. There were a few points what has touched the highway 9 corridor. That is fine. I would 9 is a good place stop that. Now that brings a nice, solid control line if you well on highway 9. We will continue that process. It will be painstakingly long and it will take a lot of effort. We are working to do that. Again, it is very difficult because of the number of structures that are dispersed throughout the area and a lot of it is station is there and a lot of steep and rugged terrain. It is a painstaking process and a slow process but we are continuing to work on that and our crews are making advancements every day to make it more safe. Speaking next from the Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Office is chief deputy park. Good morning, so in terms of sarahs office activity, last night we again had suppression with officer checks and checking for different folks as those calls came in. In terms of total calls for service, calls that we got, there were 10 people that were called in along with we sent deputies out on both of those. Hour missing person stands at four. We have four missing people that we are trying to determine where they are and in terms of activity when it comes to suspicious people, we made three arrests as i said before. We will continue to say we have a lot of personnel. Last night we had a lot of personnel and moving forward we will have 79 total personnel and 33 from our office and again i cannot speak more highly of our local agencies and agencies over the hill that contributed 46 today, so 79 total personnel will be looking for people that should not be in the evacuation area and in that vein, there were three people, four people rather, three in which we arrested and two arrested, they had warrants and they were taken to jail and arrested for those warrants and also charged with being in a closed evacuation or your. Another was from san francisco. She was not from the area and was arrested for being in an enclosed evacuation area. We also cited a person who is from the area but was not supposed to be here and he was escorted out. And i wanted to touch real quickly. We got a number of calls with regards to they did a pre warning and i believe they went door to door. It is a great thing to be prepared but i want to reiterate there is no fire danger right now to the city of santa cruz, and so cal fires done a great job of soutrn border, as long as the weather stays the way it should and conditions to stay the way they should, there should not be an enema danger to the city of santa cruz and then there is interest on the wall that was stolen from a firefighter i think were all blown away that someone would actually steal from someone that is out there, trying to help but we have a detective and are dedicated to that case and we are looking into it and we are running down leads and i guarantee if we can find out who did this, that person is going to jail. That is the update on our activity, thank you. Speaking next from the San Mateo County Sheriffs Office is solved. Good morning, right now, there are no significant changes for San Mateo County. We did have an incident yesterday where six people did enter a restricted area to check on the property and the end result is they had to be rescued. They snuck into an area that was restricted and they were surprised by the fire and we had to redirect resources to get those people out. We understand that when people are evacuated there very anxious and become concerned about the properties and that is why we have Law Enforcement protecting those areas and keeping them secured a 24 whns redirect resources. They put First Responders in additional risk and you put yourself at risk for injury. We are working very hard around the clock to make sure you guys are getting information up to date and that you know about it. We are putting them on our social media channels. If you want more information you can download our app for android or iphone. Speaking next, we have the cal Fire Management team. Good morning, ove last d lot winds and larger winds on this incident. We continue to increase our personal numbers outside of this incident along with engines and there are crews and we will continue to do that until we have sufficient resources at the incident to mitigate the entire perimeter. Obviously, Mother Nature has helped us quite a bit. We have moisture from yesterday evening and we have had increasing humidity with reduced winds. The operational folks on the ground have taken advantage of those opportunitiethnatuhas pre have worked extremely hard to develop what they have currently and we will continue to progress as long as the conditions remain the same or improve. We are still vigilant for what occurred over the last seven days what type of weather pattern we are in and what kind of winds we have and what kind of drop of humidity we have. We will watch that closely and we will be prepared to be proactive if those conditions reservice in the next week to two weeks. We can be aggressive with maintaining are perimeter and reduce the risk to all the communities that are endangered and all the infrastructure that is out there. And our fire little speaker, we have the unit chief. Good morning, it is nice to see we have some weather being, t people into the rentage of oph and toally on positive. You can see the increase with the containment is there. I wanted to focus a little bit on what the sergeant said we have people that are still trying to get in there properties are there. San mateo and Santa Cruz County are working diligently and establishing websites that can provide the Public Information on the status of the residence. We currently have numerous teams of inspectors out there, looking at the properties in gathering information so we can get that out to the public as soon as possible for the counties so you can have the idea of what you have left or if your property ge please be patient with us as we get this information out to you. We need to make sure it is safe for our inspectors to get into the areas so they can assess the damage. Thank you. That concludes all this unless there are questions you have. After been any Lightning Strikes . There were some strikes across the northern part of the state. It was not widespread and we do not have any confirmed in our local area in the san Mateo Santa Cruz area. I do not know the specifics of this. I do not have much specifics other than they entered a restricted area. They were not injured, nor were the First Responders that got them out to do not have details if they were cited for anything but this is a reminder to everyone to work with us on this. [ reporter is inaudible ] once it is safe to do so and investigators have had a chance to clear the area, until then, do not go in because there will be a lot of other things going on that people are not aware of and we understand, that is why you mentioned, anything that is important, information wise, we are working to get it out. Please work with us and be patient. We understand how you guys feel and that is why we have Law Enforcement working together 24 seven. You been listening to the News Conference, getting an update on the czu lightning fire. More than 200 structures have been destroyed and two areas and they have increased resources to fight the fires. Good news, therwas no such an impact. Theyre making some progress. Darren shows us the latest the get the blaze is under control but the evacuations in place overnight. Track officials are optimistic in the Santa Cruz County firefighters the new information about that fire just into the newsroom. Good morning, it is monday, august 24th. I am michelle griego. I am len keise. Another round of lightning and storms fizzling out, providing some relief for the bay area. That is good news. Still a combined 766,000 are burning in three different fires. Some are the size of new york city. We have live team covers all morning long from evacuations to the dangerous smoke. It is still filling the air. We have you covered we begin with darren peck and the storm threat is not over yet. We have gotten through the worst of it. We have seen the best dynamics. That i am still watching light showers in the north bay. It could actually be more good news than anything else because that is light rain falling on the complex of burning up in Sonoma County which has been such a concern. There are ones one windsor and up 101. However, they have the potential to drop lightning. We are not done completely. We have to watch this closely. The red flag warning is in effect until 5 00 in the evening but the wind that was the primary focus of concern, the overnight, we are on the tail end of that and i think we can breathe a little bit of a sigh of relief even though we are not completely finished. As far as the forecast, once the showers clear out by9 or 10 00, the head line turns back to smoke and the quality of the air is waiting to greet you when you open your front door. When i check into the complete forecast palma i will cover that. I will give you the specifics on what the air quality is like in each part of the day area. Plus we will look at the forecast what to expect this afternoon. In morgan hill, we are going to be here but nobody is in and nobody is out in this neighborhood. You can see the police presence. You only see two officers but let me tell you there have been at least six people in and out or six officers in and out, making sure no one is into this evacuation zone. I spoke to them half an hour ago , not even and they told me they have a strong presence here because they have seen what has happened in other areas, specifically the Santa Cruz Mountains with regards to looting in they are making sure that is not going to happen here. They want everyone to feel comfortable leaving their homes, which they told the most people a. Ave heated those vacu and warnings. Those are in effect east of morgan hill. They are going in and out. They have set up the checkpoint at thomas grade and dunn road and nobody is allowed inside the neighborhood. Have had plenty of time to take about the process because the fires happen burning closer and closer over the last week. They have been watching it happen. We spoke to several people who say they have been tearing, in their mind, deciding what they want to take with them. We are somewhat apprehensive about what to do though we have been planning for the last few days and we had a vehicles parked elsewhere and we packed up our valuables and something that we had plenty of time to decide. And what to leave behind. We took as much as we could. To give you an idea of exactly how big of an area we are talking about, here is a map. Cal fire has issued an expanded evacuation warning for the area that includes east of pete road all the way over to coyote creek south of eagleview drive and north of this road. For those of you going out or anyone else who has evacuated, if you do not have a place to go, they have made sure that they have one for you. It is around Milpitas Library as well as sobrato high school, which is in morgan hill on burnet avenue. They are making sure that everyone who shows up is going to be safe and keeping people socially distant. U wi not e he youre keeping everyone safe and distance as well as out of the zone. Thank you, this morning, we have just learned six people had to be rescued after going to a mandatory evacuation zone. That happened yesterday in San Mateo County. Officials say they were checking on their property and then got stuck there was go live to someone in Santa Cruz County and there is a News Conference that just wrapped up, so what is the latest . If you want some good news, there was plenty of it here. Containment on this fire is now up to 13 and it has grown a little bit to 78,000 acres but, again, containment is up and humidity is up, not a lot of lightning last night to speak of, and there is more moisture and i do not know how to describe it other than more confidence out of that briefing. If you saw some of it, they are up about their position in and around the fire and the way the weather is working and they said there are certain things they would like mon vor but ove all, i think that was a pretty up the description of the situation here. They talked about the highway 9 corridor and the fire burning west of that and they wished they had better lines drawn up and down but they said it looks pretty good and they talked about in confident about the situation down and around uc santa cruz. They rattled off a bunch of what i would describe as pretty encouraging items on the fire and mainly seeing containment starting to climb and seeing more confidence about the weather. I think those are the real highlights from it. They did speak about a number of people who were arrested overnight for being in the evacuation zone for various reasons. They also talked about some people who were rescued when they went back into homes and found them creeping up and they needed help getting out. They also talked about the wallet issue. Everyone has heard about the firefighter who had his account drained by someone who grabbed a wallet. They say they have had an investigator assigned specifically to that case, and they are running down leads and have every intention of finding that individual. I am sure they will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. It is unbelievable that would even happen. It is good to know that they are having some small winds out there. Now to Sonoma County. Complex fire in severaon e y creathe eastern edge has levels reduced or removed. Right now, the lnu fire is the second largest fire in state history and the fire zone is outside healdsburg. It has already claimed at least five lives. New staggering video shows a terrifying perspective of what it is like to escape the flames in a wildfire. This is video from last week from a driver escaping from roseville. You can see embers flying in every direction. Somehow, with all of that, the driver managed to escape. We are keeping our eyes on the road ways. Traffic is stacking up. It sure is that we have a number of accidents to deal with. There is one near the bay bridge eastbound towards the lowered . Things are getting a little better though. Wildfit to get to some of thesef come you will see closures in and around that area. That is an ongoing area problem. I have tweeted all the specific ones on my twitter. As far as the larger ones go, highway 17 will see closures and near herman road and Scotts Valley drive and along 35 and 84 and highway 1. That is a look at your morning drive. Back to you. We are proud to be partnering with the red cross in a virtual telethon for fire relief. We are running it all day today. Just call or text the numbers on your screen or go to kpix. Com. Another live look from the staging area of the czu complex fire. The fire is burning more than 77,000 acres and over 200 structures but the weather is helping out the situation will bring another update from the scene and just about 10 minutes. Stocks are opening in the green. 20 was on the phone, jason brooks. They are going higher once again which means new records are coming for the nasdaq and the s p. Both closed at record highs on friday. It was trading about 3400 for the first half and now it is not too far away from its own record. It is about 5 away and it is looking at apple and tesla once again, as major catalysts for the stock market rally. They have soared higher in 2020 despite the pandemic and last week, big milestones for both companies. Apple is the first to become a 2 trillion company and tesla stock traded over 2000 for the first time. That is another bakers cyst for the overall market. The dow is higher by 134 points and about 138 for the nasdaq and the s p is up 5 to 6 point the nasdaq and s p has more record highs. Taking a look at new orleans right now, it is the calm before the storm, voluntary evacuations have been ordered in some of the neighborhoods. The governor is already pumping drainage canals and issuing wegentcktormin the first comes marker which ispect and then laura, which recasters ict wi be even more intense. It is 6 45 with to check on the weather and with all of these fires burning, they are looking closely at weather conditions. We talked about the possibility i want to check back closer for where you live. What is the air quality like waiting to greet you outside your door. I can get specific. In the south bay, you know the drill. The deeper the color, the worst the air. Hopefully, it is not the purples. The worst the quality and the more unhealthy the areas if it is in the purple. The south bay is looking at to that is not good to go easy on yourself but it gets worse around the trivalley and the castro valley. You have purple dots for dublin and livermore. Ere are a few for pleasanton. That is where their quality gets to the very unhealthy. The story is the same. You want to limit your exposure to the stuff. The 680 corridor is just as bad. It is rough in concord but not as bad as those little narrow valleys along 680. Better news for the east bay. It is moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups although the city has a red bullseye in the middle of the peninsula and if you look at south marin, you have bad air quality and that extends into sonoma. Go easy on yourself and that is what it looks like over dublin. That is all smoke. It has not improved and there is the forecast looking ahead. Here are the light showers we were talking about. Some of those could drop a stray lightning bolt or two between now and 10 00 and that is why the red flag warning is still in effect until 5 00 this evening, so youre not out of it completely although we have gotten through the worst of it and if you look at the forecast for the rest of the bay area, it will still be hot inland. It is 95 degrees and 8 degrees above average, so this is hot in addition to smoke. The smoke is making the headline. That is the scene from the top of the Salesforce Tower camera the whole east bay is out there. You cannot see a thing. You can barely make out Treasure Island from that view. There is san jose with a look at they are quality and this is a mix of marine layer and smoke from the golden gate bridge. Daytime highs are in the mid 90s today inland. It is 96 in concord, 89 in santa rosa and 74 for san francisco. The fact that these temperatures are 70 degrees above average would be the headline but that is kind of getting lost. It is getting lost in the smoke and it should because it is trumping Everything Else when it comes to the weather that you should be preparing for today and considering the way you need to limit your exposure as much as you can. How is the drive looking . It is a busy one . Quite a few accidents to contend with plus all these closures due to the ongoing wildfires. There are delays at the bay bridge. The meter lights were turn on around 5 30 it is already backed up beyond the 880 overpass. We have a crash on the lower deck of the bay bridge and it has cleared out. Things are okay out of the city into the east bay if that is where you were going. An accident on south 880 and 237 has one lane blocked. Once youre on 237 westbound, trying to get onto 101, it is a little tough out of alice. There is a broken down vehicle causing metal areas backup in and around there. Theres a trouble spot on 37 in the north bay and 121 arnold drive. The crash, one lane is blocked and there is some speed down to two miles an hour. Traffic is crawling. Westbound 37 near Merritt Island is not doing so well. Hen we ha both dons near 80 are are in still completely shut down and as you work your way from 128 and 121, there are parts of Solano County low and 121 and silverado trail that are impacted. Help is starting to pour in for Bay Area Fire Department affected by the wildfires. Visible to carry a firearm and has raised more than 50,000 to help firefighters that have lost their own homes. There also helps to help one firefighter that suffered a big loss. The fire destroyed his familys home in polk valley. Mitchell rooms is the newest and youngest member of the volunteer fire station and lost everything. Go fund me has been set up to help him out despite the loss, he is still out there on the fire lines. And we are proud to be partnering with the red cross in a virtual telethon for fire relief. We are running it all day today, starting now, so call or text the nu re or goto kp they have the latest evacuation zones moving out of neighborhoods. I will tell you how that is going what you can expect moving forward. Good morning, the Republican National Convention Begins today and only on cbs this morning, we spoke with president Donald Trumps chief of staff, mark meadows, and in our series, teachers nationwide are preparing for a challenging year. A reminder, we have a new app that gives you easy 24 7 access to cbsn bay area and our newscast. You need to delete the old app an we are live in Santa Cruz County, with the latest update on the czu fire and it is primarily good news. Containment jumped from 8 to 13 and the fire grill a bit ey talkeabout being generally confident about their position and the developing situation with the weather, which is considerably more favorable. Last nights conditions actually turned out to be favorable despite the talk about possible lightning, so largely confident and good news for folks down. They talked about some Security Issues overnight with some folks who were arrested for being in the area when they should not have been and also we spoke with some folks who were rescued from their home, from the fire, having gone back in to try to get their belongings and needed help getting out. They talked about that incident involving a firefighter whose wallet was taken and the account was drained. They have an officer, an investigative officer, on that case and they are following up on leads and they hope to make an arrest soon. Pretty good news here from Scotts Valley from everything i was largely describing as slightly up beat. We have the latest evacuations that went into effect overnight. It has been busy here not only overnight but this morning. The officers that were here just left for shift changes if anything is an indicator, be back and also in full force after what they saw with regards to looting. They are not going to take any chances. Theyre making sure they have this entire area on lockdown. Those evacuations are in effect east organ ll and dozens of people could be seen driving in and out of them pretty much overnighted into the morning hours. This checkpoint is at thomas grade and dunn road. They have had a lot of time to think about this evacuation as the fire gets closer and closer to them. That expanded evacuation warning now includes the areas east of pete road all the way to coyote creek and south of eagleview drive, north of half wrote that they want to make sure everyone has a place to go. If you are evacuating, and you have someone you can visit, you can go to the milpitas my brewery on main street as well as the high school here in morgan hill. We have a major Traffic Alert that is just issued on westbound 37 at 121. Arnold drive has a crash all westbound and lanes are shut mere. Rapping alth b it is frtowa10 use the richmond to ine anme anwe237 ngtonorthb 101 ita littles luggage. Bay bridge and meter lights are on and 580 is very busy. There is a trouble spot at greenville road. There is a Traffic Alert due to road closures big stick with 580 instead. I will start off with a unique view on the smoke forecast. Youre looking at six hours worth of how the smoke is going to behave from 11 00 through 5 00. Youre going to watch it ght there. There e deer ththe worst the smoke.
