You can see the big crowd still out there, three hours after they were ordered to go home by police. Kpix 5s Andrea Nakano is with the crowd and live in oakland for us tonight. Reporter yeah. This protest started at 8 05 p. M. It was after the curfew kicked in. If you take a look down the road, protesters gathered at 14th and broadway, listening to speakers all night and chanting. And this remained very peaceful here tonight. Protests every night. It started thursday with a peaceful freese protests to honor george floyd. Many we spoke to say they are here to bring light to just one thing. There is too much injustice and we need to open our hearts and feel a oneness with each other. Reporter now, the protesters are down here. Down south to broadway, you can see a heavy Police Presence down there. The Oakland Police department has its headquarters surrounded. Officers from a number of outside agencies are also here tonight. The curfew is in place but at this point it is not being enforced. The protest is organized by oaklands antipolice terror project. It says the curfews are racist police measures but the chief says it is one way to maintain public safety. This curfew is a tool to use on violent disrupters and that is what we are going to do, if needed. Another last resort. We would like not to use it. Reporter here are shots of the protests. It is a large gathering here tonight. And also right in the intersection of 14th and broadway. Officers kept their distance, away from the crowd and concentrated at the police headquarters. Very peaceful. Very different from last friday. Andrea nakano, kpix 5. A sea of protesters participated in a peaceful march today in San Francisco. The youth organized march started at mission high school. Chopper 5 was overhead as thousands of demonstrators walked downtown. Some ending up at the hall of justice. Others going to city hall. Kpix 5s joe vazquez followed the protesters and he is live to where the protest started and ended tonight. Reporter this one is over. You can see there is still dozen of Police Officers manning mission. Half hour ago, the last of the demonstrators departed. They looked tired after a long day. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at city hall until past the 8 00 p. M. Curfew. Police never told them they were in violation, never told them anything. At one point they projected slogans on the walls. The crowd was in a festive move. Even line dancing. The electric side. Several demonstrators told me the arrests today of the other officers in the george floyd case made quite a difference. Took some of the frustration out of the air. The fact they arrested the three officers is amazing. It is a step in the right direction. We want to see prosecution. It gave me so much hope that maybe something can change and i hope it will. Reporter earlier today at the Mission Police station, a Police Officer knelt down and joined in with the protesters. This happened more than once tonight. This crowd numbered more than 10,000. It remained largely peaceful. In fact, the police chief said there were a couple incidents, police threw objection and Water Bottles at police and graffiti but otherwise a large, loud protest ends with peace and calm. An officer mistaking a hammer for a gun during the unrest Tuesday Morning as police were responding to reports of looting. The chief says officers confronted a group outside of a walgreens. One officer spotted a man running toward a car, stop and drop to his knees and that is when the chief says the officer saw what they thought was a gun. Due to this perceived threat, one officer fired his weapon five times from within the police vehicle, through the windshield, striking the suspect. Once. Investigations revealed the weapon was a long 15inch hammer tucked into the pocket. The 22yearold of San Francisco was killed. His family has hired civil rights attorney. Not just businesses and cities getting hit by looters. Small shop owners across the bay area are stepping up security amid the unrest. Kpix 5s maria medina with more. Reporter many Small Business owners hurting because of the pandemic, now bracing for another threat that could hurt their bottom lines. Looters going from town to town. Right now what is going on here is so sad. Reporter Business Owners are hoping a protest friday remains peaceful. But also preparing for the worst. In palo alto the same story. A ghost town except the sounds of boards going up over windows and doors. They are concerned, you know, they might be a target over the weekend. Reporter she says the last several days, nonstop for her and her crew. Retail stores, target, as you heard, there is Office Spaces down the streets, all covered up. And banks. All this destroying businesses, things that people work hard for, i mean condone that. Reporter a frequent site across the bay area, after looters hit Shopping Centers and then moved to smaller cities and malls. We are here tee protect ourselves. These are extra dollars we have to spend knowing with covid19, we are not even getting paid. Reporter meanwhile many who are supporting struggling businesses are hoping they are not dealt another financial blow. It is very scary. Reporter another deterrent to rioting and looting are curfews. Tonight minnesotas attorney general is increasing the charges against former minneapolis Police OfficerDerek Chauvin and charging the three other officers at the scene of George Floyds death. Derek chauvin is now charged with seconddegree murder. The three other charges are charged with aiding and abetting seconddegree murder and aiding and abetting Second Degree manslaughter. Tonight governor gavin newsom is pushing back against president trumps threat to end the civil unrest. The president called up 1600 soldiers who are now staging at four bases outside of washington. The u. S. Official tells cbs news a decision to send them home today was called off because of the potential for more violence. The option to use active duty forces in a Law Enforcement role should only be a matter of last resort and the most urgent and dire situations. We are not in one of those situations now. You have to have a dominant force. We need law and order. Also tonight the james mattis is blasting the president , calling him a threat to the constitution and trying to turn americans against one another. And tonight thousands of people gathered at the nations3 capital for a sixth day of demonstrations. Protesters saying and chanting and Law Enforcement officers stood watching over the crowd which stretched down 16th street near the white house. Police in new york continue to make arrests as demonstrators ignore curfew orders to make their voices heard. An hour after the deadline, officers moved in on crowds of demonstrators using pepper spray or batons. This is the second night since the curfew took effect. Tonight is the last night of curfews for two of the bay areas biggest cities. San joses expire at 5 00 a. M. Tomorrow. San Francisco Mayor announcing the same. Starting tomorrow morning at 5 00 a. M. We will be lifting the curfew in San Francisco. The protests we have seen in the city and across the country are for an important cause and our city will continue to facilitate any and all peaceful demonstrations. The curfew cancellations just in time for the aclu which sent letters to four bay area counties and two cities warning they are violating the first amendment. The letter said if anything, the imposition of a curfew, a measure of a police state, in direct response to protests regarding Police Accountability demonstrates the importance of these protests. It is a City Council Policy that we do not take action on issues that are not of immediate local importance. Sport Team Practices and summer camps can resume with modifications and parks along the coast opened to the public today. By the weekend, state parks and beaches could also open up. So hopefully she gets the walk out of the way early in the day or waits until the sun goes down because temperatures will be toasty inland. Not hot enough for a heat advisory but it will be very toasty. Temperatures 10 degrees above average near the bay but 15 or more than that above average inland. Temperatures along the coast 60s. South bay and inland, the Santa Clara County valley, low to middle 90s. The hot spots are inland and the east bay. A heat advisory tomorrow, Solano County, fairfield upper 90s. Similar temperatures in antioch. Temperatures in the low to middle 90s up and down the valley. Around the bay, not as warm as today. Low 70s for the city and 80 on the east side of the bay. The north bay upper 80s and low to middle 90s. Neighbors to the north, 90s in lake and mendocino counties as well. Showers into the weekend. Late friday night into early saturday, maybe saturday night, 20 does not warrant putting rain drops in the extended forecast. Most of them will evaporate on. F parts of yosemite could open to the public. The issues still up in the air tonight. Yosemite could start reopening for visiters in the next week or so.
