Leading the team, white House Counsel and mr. Trumps private attorney jay sekulow. Were ready to get this behind us. Reporter the roster includes half a dozen attorneys including Alan Dershowitz. Ive been asked to prepare and deliver the case, the constitutional case against president. Reporter and former special prosecutor ken starr, best known for the investigation that led to president bill clintons impeachment. The former intern at the center of the case Monica Lewinsky tweeting are you blank kidding me . I think ken starr is a disaster. Dershowitz was also on o. J. Simpsons defense the team and was accused of Sexual Assault which he denies. But a white house adviser tells cbs ingenuous the president believes the pair will make for great tv ratings. A lot of president s, some good, some not so good. You got a good one now. Reporter the president lashed out at democrats who released new evidence from former giuliani associate lev parnas including photos with parnas and trump. Selfimpeaching almost every single day. Reporter House Speaker nancy pelosi say the president s actions will abstain on his record. No matter what the senate does it can never be erased. I want him to know he is impeached forever. Reporter the president s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani is not expected to join his defense team although he said he will still continue to advise the president. As lawmakers sort through all of this new evidence they will also have to decide whether or not to hear from additional witnesses. Jeff . Okay, thank you very much. New York MagazineNational Correspondent joins us now. Good morning. Senate trial begins in three days. Big question is witnesses. For that to happen several republicans at least would have to vote with democrats. Does that happen . Its unclear right now. A lot of democrats are getting more confident they will have this as a public debate. There are some republican senators, democrats need four on their side who said we should hear from witnesses. Some say if we hear from witnesses democrats want maybe well call witnesses of our own. This will be the big debate. Who are the likely candidates . For senators . Yeah. Mitt romney. Susan collins. Lisa murkowski and some senators either older republicans like Lamar Alexander from tennessee and retiring or people who are up for reelection like Corey Gardner or martha mcsally, people who some democrats think maybe we can put pressure on these guys to at least go out and say lets hear all the information. We think of witnesses and we heard in the report the mention of lev parnas. He heard bits and pieces of things leaking out. Has anything moved the needle at all . It moves the needle. Might indeed move the needle on this question of witnesses because there are a lot of republican senators who are saying behindthescenes this is interesting information why didnt we hear about this before. On the other hand, a lot of them are saying if were just hearing about this now their argument is why didnt House Democrats bring this information up before. The answer is they couldnt. It has moved the needle in that theres a conversation happening on capitol hill saying theres a lot more information out here. Despite questions about his credibility, parnas credibility. How do Alan Dershowitz and ken starr contribute to this team . Making big headlines is what the president wants. One thing well see is a lot of talk about the clinton impeachment. Thats something when the president was choosing his legal team here he clearly wanted. He wanted a conversation about someone elses impeachment. Well hear about this precedent over the next few weeks. These are two people who the people sees a lot on television, hears a lot from. They are not people that republican senators would have wanted leading this team. President trump has been impeached. Hes the first president to be impeached who is also running for reelection. How will that play out . Because its never happened before. We have no idea. This is, obviously, weighing on the president. He doesnt like hes been impeached. However people on his Reelection Campaign have raised a lot of money and can shore up his base talking about this. Hes historically unpopular and there are Democratic Candidates out there saying ebeen impeached but we still have to beat this guy. Now you have people who judge and joe biden who can barn storm in iowa as much as they want while warren, sanders and Amy Klobuchar have to set in trial. They are booking nighttime rallies. Amy klobuchar is considering skyping into iowa. A big problem for these three senators because they are literally physically stuck in washington in the final 15 days. You mention the final 15 days. How are things shaping up . Thats right. I just come back from iowa. An unprecedented toss up. Four candidates can easily win this thing. Well learn a lot more about the shape of this race on caucus night. Isnt that what we want at this point . It will be the nice. Thank you. We appreciate it. On friday the attorneys for 15 parents accused in the College Admission scandal were back in court. Reporter a missing masterpiece, decades old mystery in the art world and while many questions still remain a big one, of it real has now been answered. There she was against her greenback ground looking as if nothing had happened, yet i would like to say with no lack of emotion that i can announce the painting is authentic, the prosecutor told press friday. Then in december Italian Police were called to the scene after a gardner at the same gallery had, get this, cleared away ivy revealing a small door and a hole in a wall. Inside was a plastic bag with the masterpiece. The best known work may be the kiss. Reporter robert simon is a new york art historian and dealer who suggests one problem for thieves is how easily identifiable this was. Famous painting. Well documented. So to sell it is kind of an impractical idea. Reporter adding to the value of this work and helping to authenticate it is that clint painted this lady on top of another one. Theres a second portrait underneath. Art investigators will hold on to that portrait for a while longer to carry out additional tests to see if it holds more clues including who might have stolen it. Here to give us a preview is jesse weber, attorney and host on the law and order Crime Network who have been following the proceedings from inside the courtroom. You were seated directly behind Harvey Weinstein. I could poke him. As the jury selection took place. You described that jury selection as a surreal process. The whole courtroom experience is pretty surreal. We started with 2,000 summons. 600 jurors were called in. As of thursday morning 146 jurors were ultimately questioned by both sides and the judge. We came to this magic number of 12 jurors, three alternates. Seven men, five women. Thats right. When you look at that on the face you wonder does that benefit the defense, being predominantly white males . I would like to be more optimistic. Well see what happens. Opening statements. How much do jurors put into those . I cant stress this enough. So important. Theres an argument to be made you could win over a jury based upon an opening statement. The prosecution has to set the stage and tell the story. The defense has to make him relatable and sympathic. If they make a promise and dont deliver in the trial the jury will remember. Two accusers but hear from more witnesses in this case. Why is that so important . You have these two witnesses. These four others can show a pattern. This wasnt a mistake. This was a common scheme hes done over the years. Because two counts are predatory Sexual Assault which is so important, which means if the jury believes he did this to more than one woman, that top charge is life in prison. They want that. The state really wants that. What happened in the cosby trial they showed a pattern. So important. One thing to have two women, having multiple women makes the case strong. Could this have an impact on the case in l. A. Whatever he says. One of the accusers in l. A. Is one of these witnesses who will testify in new york. Whatever she says could be used in that trial. Very important. How much is the walker going to play into the jurors minds . They were asked that question. Is there anything about his appearance today to make you think he couldnt have done this. Most said no. He appears not to be in well shape. I see him every day. Whether its real or not cosby wasnt in great shape. This is the way he is now. This is something that happened years ago. How long should it last . Until march. Well be there for a while. Jesse thank you. Thomas jefferson not only helped to build a nation but some of its Early Buildings as well. Thomas jefferson is revered as americas third president and its first secretary of state. Hes also the main author of the declaration of independence and one of four president s on mt. Rushmore. Whats less known is his role as an architect who helped shape the look of early america. An exhibition at the Chrysler Museum of art in norfolk, virginia is exploring that old and little known legacy in a very modern way. Good morning. Thomas jefrp was many things, a politician and diplomat. Naturalist. A scientist. But its his work as an architect thats getting special attention at the moment because it illustrates both the brilliance of his vision and what to many is an unforgivable blind spot. Just the title of the show will surprise some of us. Thunderstorms jefferson architect. Im not sure i even knew that or i forgot it. He was an architect. Not a professional. But one of the most advanced architectural thinkers of his time. The curator and Museum Director says jeffersons influence. This is the virginia capitol. Is how familiar his designs now look. This was almost like a cliche of a government building now. It wasnt then. Jefferson was saying we want to do like what the ancient romans and ancient greek did because they the highest form of government and legislators acted with wisdom and architect should display. Monticello carried those principles. This was the drawing that jefferson submitted. So did his anonymous submission to a Design Competition for the white house. This dome was to have glass windows. Even today this looks almost futuristic. Yes. Im not sure could it have been built. That may be why. These models first appeared at an italian retrospective on jeffersons architect. Neil saw that show and wanted to bring it home to virginia but realized it was a complicated idea. You thought that exhibition wouldnt be well received. If i presented that kpibs i would have been criticized. Jeffersons designs were made into buildings by slaves. As a politician he helped to end the atlantic slave trade but at monticello and elsewhere jefferson owned more than 600 human beings. Do we know who made these . In some cases we do, some we dont. He enlisted a group of advisors to make a new exhibit. Highlighting the otherwise anonymous people who built things like this store. Theyve been able to analyze the grain and grooves and details of the door and connect that to a set of tools that are known to have been john hemmings. John hemmings was Sally Hemmings brother. We dont know who the fingerprint in this brick is but here it is under glass next to a handful of handmade nails and a tribute to isaac granger. His shirt, hes showing you his hands which are signs of his creativity. Love it or hate it the exhibit is a profoundly different way to present jefferson. I could see people saying this is an American Hero why are your trying to bring him down. I can see people saying this is a slave holder why are you building him up. I got a couple of letters how could you do this to Thomas Jefferson. I had other people say really we want to give praise to this man who really had a concubine, who had a slave mistress. The reassessment of jefferson the architect will continue at the university of virginia a campus he designed when uva dedicates this memorial to enslaved laborers. The slave worked below in kitchens poorly lit and poorly ventilated. Mabel wilson worked on this. She studies race. Jeffersons hallmarks is to hide places where slaves lived and worked. This is what makes him an architect. He understands that the buildings make relationships between people. So he is very shrewd at using architect to make invisible something he understood was morally reprehensible and against the value of freedom and equality. This is part of a larger reckoning in virginia. For so long we only told one side of the story. Janice underwood is director of diversity and inclusion hired by the governor after a racist photo was found on the governors yearbook page. Virginias second governor was Thomas Jefferson who designed the Capitol Building where underwood works. He said all men are created equal. While i know that to be true he would not have included me in that. He wouldnt have included Sally Hemmings or any of his children. Underwood said she isnt sure if the statue of jefferson just behind the whole should even stay up. I dont know. Were reckoning with those questions now. In its way the Chrysler Museum is attempting to answer questions of jeerch by teaching new names and attaching new meaning to old ones. Do you want them to come awhich with the idea that Thomas Jefferson was a Great American or maybe just an important american. I would say hes a Great American. I would say the idea that we have a president who has ideals, that we still aspire to, is really something i want people to take away with them. To recognize he fell short of his aspirations i hope they come away with that as well. A handful of other museums across the country are making a similar shift. In some cases changing the labels next to paintings to explain the person in the portrait was involved in the slave trade. Important point to make. A Great American he may have been but a flawed one if you hold regard to the writings of the man himself. All men are created equal. Its the contrast or even hypocrisy at the center of this exhibition and reexamination of jefferson. So important to understand the past, the full story. Thank you. Really great story. If youre heading out the door dont forget to set your dvr to cross border cbs this Morning Saturday. Coming up your chin emergency. Really . I grew up in a very musical household, les paul was my godfather. There were musicians coming over for lunch all the time. Because you can sing doesnt mean you can write it. Many great singers cant write. Thats true. So what happened to me was i started my band when i was 12 and i was growing up in texas so i was playing rhythm and blues, blues, Country Music and rock and roll. And doo wop. I learned everything by ear just like you. I knew the words and choruses and i didnt read or write music i learned everything by ear. I didnt start writing tunes until after i left check. Then i was like maybe 22 years old when i finally got a recording contract and kind of went oh, now i really have to write something. And i started. And it took a long time. You know. Its interesting because you made a remarkable transition. You started as a blues, r b, rock band playing sort of jam band kind of stuff. Yep. Then in the 70s you sat down and started writing basically pop songs. Im always writing songs was like a puzzle. And to write a hit single was always the goal. As soon as we got a record contract, one bright single this was in the 60s p. M. How do you know its a hit. Do you feel it in the studio . You dont know. We begin this half hour with the continuing fallout from Major League Baseball sign stealing scandal. The controversy has already cost three Major League Baseball managers and a general manager their jobs. Its called into question the legitimacy of the Houston Astros 2017 world series title. While scandal has rocked baseball to the core it turns out cheating is as old as sport itself. Major League Baseball says the Houston Astros went hitech to gain an unfair advantage on their way to the world series title in 2017. The team used a centerfield camera to decode opposing catcher signals to pitchers and transmit them live into the doudug out. From there players banked on a trash can to tell players what kind of signal to expect. As far as baseball is concerned, i happen to think this is the biggest scandal weve seen. Reporter the author of crooked a history of cheating in sports. Peds were huge. That were examples of individual players doing things themselves. This is basically a team working together to cheat. Reporter baseball has a long history of bad behavior. From rampant ped use, pete rose betting on games, the 1919 black sox scandal, all the way down to players tossing spitballs and using corked bats. Even one of the sports signature moments was later marred by scandal. When it was revealed Bobby Thompson of the new york giants hit the shot heard around the world after coach Herman Franks allegedly relayed an illegally stolen sign. Roots of the astros game can even be found as far back as 1900, carried out by a Philadelphia Phillies back up catcher named Morgan Murphy. They put a box underneath the third base coaching box and it was charged so that there was a line that went from that box all the way underground in back of the outfield fence where Morgan Murphy had a hole in the fence with a telescope and stealing signs. He would basically shock the third base coach. Not just baseball. Examples of unfair play have been uncovered in the ancient olympics. Pro football, cycling, college basketball, even the boston marathon. When rossi won the race after sneaking on to the course about a mile from the finish line. People get a cheaters high when they outsmart a system. Maurice researchers deception in cheating for Whartons School of business. He blames the astros scandal and other episodes of cheating with an obsession on winning. When winning becomes the key objective other things become secondary and the accolades people get used to it, they value winning and they are going to cut corners in other ways. But while cheaters have been found out from biblical times all the way up to the super bowl era, he believes they havent learned their lesson. Seems to me that instead of saying that cheaters never prosper, we should be saying cheaters often prosper. Thats the big question for a lot of people with this world series title and wanting major league to do something about it. But they still won the world series. They are saying well later youll get punished. You still won. You had threeman gears dismissed. A general manager fired. An owner fined 5 million. But if its a player driven scandal which this was. It gave them immunity to tell us what happened and none of you will be punished is what Major League Baseball did because they wanted to get to the bottom of it. Cheers. 13 cookbooks. A memoir. I want to go back to the beginnings. You after true immigrant from, you know, distressed situation. Absolutely. You know, i kind of i came here when i was 12. Let me start from the beginning. Italy has 20 regions. I was born in eastern italy. Its no longer italy. It was given to communist slovakia. Life was tough. We couldnt speak italian. We couldnt go church and all of that and ultimately i spent my formative years with grandma and this is where my passion for food started. Because food was scarce. So grandma rosa was responsible for providing food for the whole family, extending family. We had chickens, duck, goat. I would eat the goat every morning. Goat milk and bread. We had pigs. Every november the slaughter, make sausages. Make prosciutto. I would hold the potatoes. I grew up in a food situation just because of the need, because of the situation. Not because thats where i developed my passion. Is this correct you were then in a refugee camp for a couple of years before you came to the u. S. And getting in the kitchen there even was something that has stayed with you. Absolutely. So, when i was 10 my parents decided that my mother was a teacher, my father was a mechanics living under communism was not the right way to bring up their kids. How would they get away. My mother, brother and i went across the border because we had family on the other side and my father escaped and escaped at night. They shot at him. He made it. Met up with us and we were reunited and then i realized because as kids they dont tell you whats happening. I realized we werent going back to grandma. Grandma remained, goats remain and everything, i think thats when i said where is my passion for food. At that moment that nostalgic desire to be back with grandma i started cooking. Cooking the flavors that i remember from grandma. Were so glad you did because once you were here it eventually led to all of that we have. Im so sorry were out of time. Well have you sign our dish and ask you if you could have this meal with anyone past or present who would it be . I introduce you to my grandmother rosa. I want her to join us. Wouldnt you love that.
