Later today dorian is expected to move over toward or near puerto rico as a strong possible storm or possibly a hurricane. A hurricane watch is in effect for the island. Parts of puerto rico are still recovering from Hurricane Maria two years ago. Later this week dorian could pose a threat to florida. We begin with Laura Podesta in new york. Laura, how is puerto rico preparing for the stm . Well, wendy, some people are choosing to leave the island, but those choosing to stay are getting water and canned goods. Out of an abundance of caution, all Public Schools and government offices in puerto rico are closed today. Dorian is taking aim at puerto rico. Sustained Tropical Storm winds with higher gusts, gusts that could get to hurricaneforce winds. The storm hit the french caribbean island of martinique yesterday, collapsing roads and flooding homes. This will be a very quick storm. It will come through in six or seven hours, it will be over, and we can assess the damage. Two years ago Hurricane Maria ravaged homes. Ravaged puerto rico. Thousands of homes are still covered with tarps and the power grid remains unpredictable. Some residents are fleeing the island. Because im so unsecure here with the power, the food, the security. Those who are staying are preparing for the worst, boarding up their homes, pulling their boats out of the water, and stockpiling everything from bottled water to batteries. Dorian may be hit by the end of the week. Residents are filling sandbags now to avoid long lines later. I thought it would be a lot more difficult, to be honest with you. I have to say, these really save you. Meanwhile 45 firefighters from miamidade rescue are leaving florida and heading to puerto rico. We do doortodoor knocks, we do wide area searches. We go to the hospitals. Officials on the island closed Public Schools and government offices through at least tomorrow. And as Hurricane Season ramps up, this is some startling news, wendy. The department of Homeland Security is planning to divert 271 million from agencies like fema to fund border programs. Critics of this plan like House Speaker nancy pelosi say the move is reckless. Of course, we continue tracking dorian now. Yesterday it didnt get much stronger because a lot of dry air has been ramping into the storm, a lot of dry and dusty air has been covering the atlantic and caribbean. That is going to decrease with time. Theres also been a little bit of diggs ruppive wind shear mainly ahead of dorian, but thats disrupted door yn, mainly in the middle part of the storm, not in the top or bottom of the storm. Heres the future track. Were through this evening. It impacts puerto rico and the Dominican Republic there. Another limiting factor or obstacle could be the hostile rain here. Mountains are high in hispaniola. After that, theres plenty of opportunity. First off, lower wind shear. This is thursday. Friday, saturday, low wind shear throughout this track here on top of that very, very warm ocean waters. We could be looking g at a hurricane approaching florida late in the weekend. State attorneys general and lawyers representing local governments said they are in active settlement talks with purdue.
