Firstly, sir, i just thumped the back of Louie Gohmerts head as i was coming over here. And although his rind is still hard, i do hear a sloshing sound in there. Do you believe that Louie Gohmerts head is an overripe melon and would best serve our country by rotting on a compost heap . Yes. laughter applause stephen sir, is it true that President Trump is the most corrupt and dishonest president of the last 100 years . That is generally correct, yes. laughter applause stephen in the last 200 years . Yes. Stephen is donald trump the most corrupt president in all parallel universes, alternate dimensions, and netherrealms . If it is in the report, that is accurate. Stephen yeah, yeah, its in there. Switching gears, sir, do you think if you put a top hat on that man over your Left Shoulder right there, he would resemble rich uncle penny bags . Yes. Stephen lets find out bell rings mr. Chairman, let the record show that it does. Thank you. Now, mr. Mueller, you have also investigated the president s son, don jr. Yes. Stephen how would you characterize the contents of don jr. s skull . Vacuum. laughter stephen sir, to you, what is more disturbing, donald trump welcoming interference from the russians in our election, or the trailer for cats . Donald trump. Stephen finally, sir, youve been investigating the president for over two years. Can you say anything complimentary about donald trump . Id have to pass on that. Stephen thank you, sir. Ill now yield my time to the opening credits. Its the late show with Stephen Colbert. Tonight, the mueller retort. Plus, stephen welcomes Chris Wallace and jamie bell featuring jon batiste and stay human. And now, live on tape from the ed sullivan theater in new york city, its Stephen Colbert crt you band playing cheers and applause stephen beautiful happy wednesday, my friend. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Our viewers out there, around the world. Welcome to the late show. Im your host, Stephen Colbert today, special Counsel Robert Mueller testified for six hours in front of two different Congressional Committees. It was a marathon. I know my nipples were bleeding. laughter the first bombshell of the day wasnt even from Robert Mueller. It was about Robert Mueller. Robert mueller, 74 years old, as we mentioned, former vietnam war veteran, marine. Also known as bobby three sticks. Because he is robert. Mueller iii. Stephen bobby three sticks . I had no idea. Not for nothin, but bobby three sticks is keeping an eye on big donny fish lips, head of the trumpbino crime family. Rumor has it donny fish lips is in cahoots with vladdy noshirt. laughter big, big vladdy. Judiciary Committee Chair jerry nadler got things started, asking mueller why trump refused to sit for an interview. Did the president refuse a request to be interviewed by you and your team . Yes. And is it true you tried for more than a year to secure an interview with the president . Yes. But the president still refused to sit for on interview by you and your team . True. True. R laughter stephen theres no need to yell, sir. So, trump refused to sit for an interview, but mueller didnt mention that trump had an airtight excuse. as trump i wouldve loved to sit for an interview, but i came down with a tragic case of mouth spurs. laughter applause now, one goal cheers and applause one goal for the democrats was to get mueller to make clear that trumps claim that he was exonerated was not true. The report did not conclude that he did not commit obstruction of justice. Is that correct . That is correct. And what about total exoneration . Did you actually totally exonerate the president . No. Can you explain in plain terms what that finding means so the American People can understand it . Well, the finding indicates that the president , uh, was not, uh that the president was not exculpated for the acts that he allegedly committed. Stephen come on clt on snmentd exculpated . Come on did you not hear the guy say, so the American People can understand it did your granddaughter give you a word of the day calendar . Come on cheers and applause expulexculpated exculpated. Just use america talk, by which i mean emojis orange. Handcuffs. We need simple slogans nike just do it. Wheaties breakfast of champions. Trump the worst a man can get. Then cheers and applause jon gotta let it out. Stephen then attention turned to one of the key figures of don jr. s trump tower meeting with russians kremlin connected lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya laughter but Ohio Republican steve chabot didnt seem to know that. One of the key players in the june 2016 trump tower meeting was natalia vesinetska. Vesinetskia. Stephen as congressman now, you reported that the Trump Campaign had multiple contacts with russian lawyer natasha vespa mcskynet . Natalivin la vida loca . laughter russian lawyer napa valley legolas . And she worked for vladamoid pudding pop. But mueller had his own problems at the hearing mostly, trouble hearing. Could you repeat that, please . Can you repeat the question . Can you read the last question . Im sorry. Could you, again, repeat the question . Again, can you repeat the question . That went a a little fast for me. Stephen its Like Congress is talking to its grandpa. Im afraid youll have to speak up. These old ears arent what they used to be, and neither is our system of checks and balances. Now go fetch me some peanut brittle, and theres a shiny buffalo nickel in it for you you whipper whippersnapper. Now out of character that quick. Now, according to Justice Department guidelines, you cant indict a sitting president. Not allowed to do it. But that doesnt last forever. Could you charge the president with a crime after he left office . Yes. You believe that he committed you could charge the president of the United States with obstruction of justice after he left office . Yes. Stephen i think, ihink cheers and applause theyre simple people, easy to please. cheers well, think trump has a new Campaign Slogan trump 2020 im too pretty for jail laughter republicans kept hammering mueller about how many of his team were democrats, and eventually, he had had enough. Ive been in this business for almost 25 years, and in those 25 years, i have not had occasion once to ask someone about their political affiliation. It is not done. What i care about is the capability of the individual do the job and do the job quickly and seriously and with integrity. Stephen cares about people doing their jobs. cheers and applause there you have it. There it is. Cares about people doing their jobs quickly seriously, and with integrity. He just admitted hes biased against donald trump the democrats talked a lot about trump obstructing justice by trying to fir Robert Mueller multiple times. But republican debbie lesko had a clinching question. Were you ever fired, mr. Mueller . Stephen aha what a brilliant legal strategy as lawyer your honor, theres been a lot of talk in this courtroom today about attempted murder today. But i ask the victim, have you ever been murdered . No . The defense rests. cheers and applause the special counsel was vague all morning long. In fact, just in the first half of his testimony, mueller declined or deflected questions 123 times. I know thats frustrating, but thats just how bobby three sticks rolls. laughter i mean, take a look at this old note he passed in high school after a brief break, the House Intelligence Committee got a laughter after a brief break, the House Intelligence Committee got a chance to question mueller. But before they did, mueller made it clear what he would and would not talk about. I, therefore, will not be able to answer questions about certain areas that i know are of public interest. For example, i am unable to address questions about the opening of the fbis russia investigation, which occurred months before my appointment, or matters related to the socalled steele dossier. as mueller and since i cannot talk about anything the public is interested in, i also will not be addressing the behavior of luke p. On the bachelorette, the new collaboration between jayz and meek mill. And i defer any questions about jane as thor to nick fury and my colleagues at shield. cheers and applause i gotta work on my mueller. I gotta work on my impression. Schiff asked one of the biggest questions surrounding the investigation. When donald trump called your investigation a witch hunt, that was also false, was it not . Like to think so, yes. Well, your investigation is not a witch hunt, is it . It is not a witch hunt. Stephen not a witch hunt. And im being told we have some footage of the president s response. Im melting, melting cheers and applause . Stephen thats nice cant stand the rain against my wundto stephen my beautiful wickedness. Republican representative mike turner tried to nail mueller on the fact that, as special counsel, he didnt technically have the power to exonerate the president. You have no more power to declare him exonerated than you have the power to declare him anderson cooper. Stephen please dont declare trump anderson cooper. I really dont want that image in my mind. And im being told. Theyve already made it. laughter its an improvement. Everyone knew this was a historic day, especially the woman filming it on her phone. That womans name . Cspan 2. When congressman turner tried to attack mueller with some legal mumbojumbo about who has the power to exonerate a suspect, mueller deftly stepped aside. Mr. Mueller, would you agree with me that the attorney general does not have the power to exonerate . Uh. Im going to pass on that. You would not disagree with me when i say that there is no place that the attorney general has the power to exonerate, and hes not been given that authority . You would not disagree. Im not going to i take your question. Stephen as mueller i take your question, i put it in a box marked who cares . And throw it into go to hell canyon. applause it was hard to pin mueller down on anything that wasnt specifically written in his report. But then representative quigley from illinois, presented mueller with trump quotes praising wikileaks, which released stolen documents to sway the election in trumps favor. Wikileaks. I love wikileaks. Donald trump, october 10, 2016. This wikileaks stuff is unbelievable. Boy, i love reading those wikileaks. Donald trump november 4th, 2016. Would any of those quotes disturb you, mr. Director . Im not certain i would say how do you react to that . Well, its probably problematic is an understatement in terms of what it displays in terms of giving some i dont know hope, or some boost to what is and should be illegal activity. Stephen thar she blows laughter an actual opinion applause ready the harpoons, boys hooray and up she rises hooray and up she rises hooray he actually he actually dispressed an opinion and its a big one. Remember, problematic is an understatement is a pretty scathing indictment from a man whose version of i love you is probably its safe to say there is some fondness. At that point, the hearing took a strange turn. After four hours of raw partisanship, the United States congress did something really odd. They started to worry about the United States. This concern for country was lead off by texas republican will hurd. In your investigation, did you think that this was a single attempt by the russians to get involved in our election, or did you find evidence to suggest that they will try to do this again . It wasnt a single attempt. Theyre doing it as we sit here. Stephen which explains why the next question was from representative oleg americanman. laughter good guy. Hes a good guy. Youd like him. The Mueller Report was not able to find that trump broke the law, but it made it abundantlyce help of those prowere breaking the law. And that troubled vermonts peter welch. My concern is have we established a new normal from this past campaign that is going to apply to future campaigns, so that if any one of us running for the u. S. House, any candidate for the u. S. Senate, any candidate for the presidency of the United States, aware that a hostile foreign power is trying to influence an election, has no duty to report that to the f. B. I. Or other authorities . I hope go ahead. I hope this is not the new normal, but i fear it is. Stephen oh, god. Thats bad. I hope its not the new normal. But i fear it is. Thats chilling. Its also the slogan for the new taco bell steak reaper ranch fries burrito. I hope this is the ne normal, but i fear it is. You gotta keep it light. Gotta keep it light. Jon yeah, yeah. Stephen i could go for one of those right now. Then, at the very end of the hearing, chairman schiff asked mueller whether merely not being able to prove the president colluded with a foreign power is enough. From your testimony today, i gather that knowingly accepting foreign assistance during a president ial campaign is an unethical thing to do. And a crime. And a crime. In certain circumstances a crime, given certain circumstances. Stephen yeah, its a crime in certain circumstances. For instance, in america, right now. Weve got a great show for you tonight. cheers and applause Chris Wallace is here. But when we return, what did the President Trump think of the hearings. Stick around. Ill tell you. vo parents have a way of imagining the worst. Especially when your easily distracted teenager has the car. At subaru, were taking on distracted driving [ping] with sensors that alert you when your eyes are off the road. The allnew subaru forester. The safest forester ever. Were honored to be joined by the great Valerie Simpson over there on the keyboards. Thank you so much jon Valerie Simpson stephen its a hot one. Its a vibe. Welcome back, everybody. One of those nights we have too much monologue, we gotta do it twice. Where are we now . The mueller hearing came to end after almost six hours, and after it was over, trump exploded on twitter trutis a fo laughter yes, so is global warming, and and you deny them both the. cheers and applause a few hours later, trump addressed the testimony in todays session of chopper talk. Now, trump said he was not going to watch, or maybe a little bit. Trump may not have been watching the same thing i did, because he thought it went well for him. This was a very big day for our country. I very much appreciate those incredible warriors that you watched today on television, republicans that defended something, because they were really defending our country. Stephen as trump and by our country, i mean me. For i am the state, and all who oppose me are traitors who shall be hurled into the darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Oh, im giving away my thirdterm campaign strategy. Ive said too much. Jon oh, nigh goodness stephen and he gave his official review. Mueller had no material to work with, and he did a horrible job. He had no material, which exonerated me, no collusion, witchhoax. But not only not only did he thats all right, thats all right. Not only did the president dislike what old bobby three sticks said, he disliked the way he said it. This was one of the worst performances in the history of history of our country. Stephen sir, i think this is one of the worst performances in the history of our country. We all care about amazing taste. Thats why weve been making the best mayonnaise for over 100 years. Best foods. Were on the side of food. Hey, who are you . Oh, hey jeff, im a car thief. What . im here to steal your car because, well, thats my job. What . What . . What . laughing what . . These are the memories that stay with you, long after the moments have passed. cheers and applause stephen hey, everybody, welcome back. Welcome back to the late show, everybody. Folks thank you for sticking with us. Folks, my first guest has been reporting for 50 years, continuing a Family Tradition of great journalism. He anchors fox news sunday, and is now promoting a new documentary about his father, mike wallace is here. What about this statement that you made in your own paper . You have no right to sit in judgment on me. Im not sitting in judgment. Im simply asking a question. We were doing things at the time that were revolutionary, i mean, asking serious questions, asking abrasive question. Im ready any time you want to repeat the stupid question. We got into a flock of lawsuits and it just became too controversial. This has been the last program. As tonights guest, before we can tell the world who we are and before we can act for the future, ourselves must know who we are, what we stand for, and what we mean by freedom. Mike wallace. Good night. Stephen please welcome Chris Wallace cheers and applause stephen thanks for coming back. Nice to see you again. I really enjoyed our last conversation together. Im so glad you came back. Im glad one of us did. But i can can you imagine, you just saw that clip, you can imagine having mike wallace as a father. Youre a teenager and you go out on a date and you come home, and mike wallace is sitting there waiting to ask you questions. What did you do . How long were you out . How do you explain this hidden camera video . laughter i mean stephen can you explain the lipstick on your colachris . Unfortunately, there wasnt much lipstick on my collar. How do you explain the lack of lipstick on your collar . I have to say someone once said about my father that he had an underdeveloped sense of other peoples privacy, which made hum a great journalist. Stephen sure. A great interviewer, and a pain in the ass as a father laughter . Stephen i want to get into more of that. I was lucky enough to interview your father once. You know you did gli really enjowd that. But before we get to the documentary, mike wallace is here, i want to talk about the hearing today. I know you were on the air today with fox news giving your own analysis and the president knew that also. Yes. Stephen because at at at 10 11 this morning, he tweeted this statement that you had made. This has been a disaster for the democrats and a disaster for the reputation of Robert Mueller. Now, you said that at 10 07 this morning, an hour and a half into a sixhour series of hearings. So is fox news motto, we report and decide before the things over . There was a break in the hearing. We were asked for our reaction. And let me simply say, nothing in your monologue disproved that description. Stephen in what way was it a disaster . I dont understand. Yes, you do. Stephen mow, i promise you, you dont. It seemed luke a wellorganized and choreographed recitation of the moral, ethical and criminal failings of the president of the United States. Now, interjected, interjected between those cheaper between those you had republicans undermining attempting to undermine the credibility of the man and the mission, which was the report. But of course youre going to expect that. You kind of knew the way Robert Mueller was gog answer, and yous were going to attack him. Listen stephen but it disappoint take away the impact of the factual statements from the report. But we heard the factual statements from the report back in march when the report was released. Laurence tribe, who is a distinguished harvard law professor and a fierce critic of donald trump said, also i must say, it was after i said it that the hearing was a disaster, and instead of breathing life into the report, he sucked the life out of the report. I mean, im noting you report is, and it raises some very troubling question about the president s behavior. But the whole reason that the democrats, the house majority, the democratic majority in the house, wanted to have this hearing is, they kept say the quote was, people arent going to read the book. Theyll watch the movie. The movie was a snore. And part of it was, frankly, was because Robert Mueller was seemed not in control of his brief. He didnt seem in charge. I think it raised questions as to how much he actually ran the investigation. And as you showed in some of your clips, i mean, you were making light of it, but it was actually kind of stephen im sorry i made light. Im sorry i made light. You didnt make that much light of it so youre okay. I i thought that it was sad, actually. I thought you know, because hes a very distinguished man. Stephen sure. He has hay great career in law enforcement, and at least on the basis of today, he seemed luke a fellow who wasnt didnt quite know what he was about, what was being said. He had trouble finding the various congressmen, where they were on the podium, let alone answering their questions. Stephen have you ever testified before a Congressional Committee . No. Stephen i have. I have. And thats just the mechanics of you. You dont know who is speaking to you because youre hearing a speaker, not their faces. These are all performance notes youre giving. Yit is. Stephen and they only mean something because weve been weve become desensitized to the shock of the information that they were laying out for us. That in some ways has nothing to do with the information. Thats its like the dance of it, as opposed to what the actual import of the information was. But all of that was in the report. cheers and applause look stephen theyre right. Look. Stephen ill let ill let you ill let you finish when i do. laughter that is thaad just proves my point that do you think that the thungz that were said, the enum railted moral and ethical and criminal failings of the president as described in those two reports, part one and part two, do you think theyre shocking in any way . Of course,. Stephen do you think people but i dont think theyre more shocking today than they were when the report was released in march. Stephen they hadnt been laid out so succinctly with the man right there. Look, we all talk about our politics being too tribal, right . Stephen im not sure i say, that but go ahead. You probably dont because youre part of a tribe and this is the antitrump tribe. And you represent the antitrump tribe, and so do a lot of people in this audience. Theres a protrump tribe. applause okay, and theres not wrong with being in one stephen cheers and applause ooum in the do not im in the do not welcome the help of a foreign country to win our election tribe. Those are my tribes. cheers and applause what tribe what tribe are you in . If were talking tribes, id like ton what tribe youre in when it comes to those two things . Im in the journalist tribe which isit ising there calling the shots, each pitch, that comes in is that a ball . Is it a strike. Let me finish. Stephen and it seems old. Is that a strike . And just as on sunday, if you watched my show, you saw me stephen i dont watch your show. I dont stay up and watch your show, either. Stephen i have to watch cbs. Legal me im not allowed to wap fox. You seem nice, but legally in any case, just as you know, i think that if i just felt that it was im calling balls and strikes, and just as on sunday when Stephen Miller office our show, and i talked about the fact that i thought that the president was stoking racial divisions, and i believe he is. I watched today, and i have to come out and you say, well, these are performance, theater, critic notes. Stephen yes. The fact is, thats what this is all about. If you all you cared about was the report, the report was there in black and white two months ago. The whole reason that they had the hearing was to breathe life into the report. Thats what jerry nadler, the chairman, said. They didnt breathe life into the report today. Stephen we have to talk a break right now, but well be right back to talk with Chris Wallace and more about the new documentary about husband father, mike wallace. Stick around. Thanks so much for being here and stick around. Theres a great new documentary about your father, the great mike wallace. To you, what is the most important thing about his journalistic legacy. Theres this great documentary out and i hope people will go to see it, all the folks that used to watch my father at 7 00 or 6 00, whenever you watched him on 60 minutes. You can see him in action. You can see his skill. You can see some of what drove him. You can see some of his insecurities. You know, its both personal and professional. I think the thing that people mistake, though, is they think that my father was just a performer and he just asked great questions. The fact was, he was a great journalist. He was talking about the Civil Rights Movement in the 50s before anybody else was. He did a documentary called the hate that hate produced about the black muslims in the 1950s. People talked about the fact that he walked in and did the interview with the Ayatollah Khomeini during the iranian hostage crisis in 1979 before anybody else got there. The reason he did was because he had been covering the middle east, he had interviewed all of the leaders in israel, the palestinians, yasser arafat, he did a number of interviews with the shah of iran. He was a great journalist. And, yes, he was very good on the air, and as you know, having dealt with him on the air when you interviewed him, you know, he was a great performer. But he was so much more than that. Stephen the title of the documentary is mike wallace is here. Now, when people would hear that tbraiz mike wallace is here, that would really make some sphincters snap shut. Even with his son laughter . Stephen what did it mean . Why that title, do you think, for that, because well, i have nothing to do with the documentary other than the fact they lived it. But i think what it meant was you were a businessman, you were a politician, and suddenly the secretary picks it up and says, mike wallace is here, you knew you were in a world of trouble. There was a reason he was here. And he was going to hold you to account. He was the cop on the beat way night stick, and he might come upside your head with it. Stephen last summer in a putin interview that you did. Yes. Stephen the Washington Post said you were tougher to Vladimir Putin than donald trump was. Is that a compliment to you . Or an insult to the president . Probably a bit of both. laughter what i did which actually came up today was three days before the interview, Robert Mueller, the special counsel, had indicted 12 members of Russian Military intelligence. So im talking to putin, and he had always said up to this point, you know, these are individuals. They have nothing to do with the government. But this was Russian Military intelligence. So i pointed that out, that you always say this. And then i had the indictment, and i said, and here is the indictment of these 12 members of your government. No, no, no. To he went like that and i put it on the tawbl next to him. I will tell you there were kremlin officials and Russian Security in the studio i mean in the room where we were doing it. gasping big intake offing breath. Stephen did you ever get nervous that somebody like Vladimir Putin is going to put a target on you because he doesnt like journalists . Thats true. Im stupid enough they dont. In fact, bore this interview it was in helsinki right after the summit i had already arranged for a vacation with my wife. Guess where . Russia. So the interview end. I introduce my wife to putin, and i say, and by the way, were going to russia tomorrow. And he said, well what, cities are going to . I swear. And how many days are you spending in each city . Everything turned out fine. Im here. I will say every once in a while we would be driving along and we would stop in a traffic jam and i would say to my wife, lorraine, this is when the hit happens. Stephen im glad it didnt. Thank you, chris. So nice talking to you. I hope you come again. The film mike wallace is here is in theaters this friday. Catch chris every week on fox news sunday. You bleep better b. You come back to me, okay . I promise ill be all right. Stephen please welcome jamie bell aunt no Mountain High enough aint no river wide enough to keep me from getting to you babe stephen please. Definitely. Gotta hydrate. Is that yours . No, thats yours. You have to stay hydrated for these. The movie is called skin. Yes. Stephen what is your character trying to do . What are they running away from . The story is true. I played wit play bryon widner. Covered head to toe in tattoos. Meets this woman, as you sathere, and her three children. The story with him, its a coming to consciousness, i think. You know, theres an awakening of a man. And he goes through two years of very painful surgery to remove these tattoos, and ultimately attempt to reform himself. And the film isund coo of asking questions of how far do we extend our sense of compassion . How far can we extend our sense of kindness for these kinds of people . And also the compassion and kindness of strangers, people youve never seen before. Stephen this is an american story. Youre playing an american neonazi. Yeah. Stephen theres been an alarming rise of white supremacists, sort of open White Supremacy and white supremacist culture in the United States in the last oh. Two and a half years. laughter and yee and now, is the same thing happening in england . Well, we have stephen something similar. We have a new Prime Minister who encourages that side of things, i think. Stephen boris johnson. Yeah. Stephen is a white supremacist. Hes definitely not a white supremacist. But i just think, you have a clown as a president. And now we have a clown as a prim m stephen not a white supremacist. Let moo take that back. Is he a white enthusiast . I would say so, brexit. Im just saying, anything you guys can do, we can do just as stupidly. laughter . Stephen on a lighter note true, keep it light. Stephen you also, in rocket man you played bernie topin. I did. Stephen eltons longtime lyricist. applause . Thank you, thank you. Stephen i understand you have, like, a long you have a longterm you have a longrunning relationship with elton john yourself. When did you first meet him . I was in a film called billy elliot about 150 years ago. applause . Stephen here we go. Anyway, so, the Cannes Film Festival when the film premiered, and he was the most famous person id ever met. When i met him, he was just a weeping, shaking mess. And i didnt realize it at the time, but in doing the film and in learning about him and researching him, and if you guys have seen the film, it deals a lot with his father and his father not really accepting his sexuality. And he told me that his father never came to a single one of his shows, not one, throughout his whole career. And obviously in the film billy elliot at the end the gad shows up to see the grownup billy elliot performing. That for him, it crushed him. But after, that he wrote the music for billy elliot the musical. I felt weirdly cosmically tethered to him because of that experience. And its been such a privilege to play bernie in that movie. Stephen thats lovely, thats lovely. Thank you. Stephen so nice to meet you. Thank you for being here. Thank you. Stephen skin is in select theaters this friday.
