Irma is blamed for at least three deaths so far in the caribbean and tonight florida, georgia and South Carolina are all bracing for potential devastation. Puerto rico took a being from irma beating from irma wednesday. It is home to more than 3 million people. Wind gusts whipped across the u. S. Territory knocking out power and toppling trees. Irma flooded and battered the French West Indies with st. Maarten taking a direct hit. The rain and high winds were so strong they almost completely obscure the camera lens. Millions of floridians are in irmas path. It will likely hit somewhere in florida saturday or sunday. The governor is sounding the alarm. This is not a storm you can sit and wait through. Reporter residents of the florida keys were ordered out. Im scared, category 5, never been through one. Reporter the major concern here is storm surge. The islands average about 6 feet above sea level. The surge from irma has the potential to be more than 9 feet high. The governor estimates 25,000 people in the state have already evacuated. Gas stations are running out of fuel as drivers scramble to get out of town. Most of the flights out of the area are now sold out, but theyre working to add more. Those will take a direct hit with catastrophic damage likely there, the latest update in minutes ago, still a category 5 storm, sustained winds of 185 Miles Per Hour with higher gusts. The storm will rumble through the bahamas. Then on saturday all the computer forecast models say it will make a very sharp turn to the right. The question is will it turn directly into florida or will it turn before making it to florida . The latest computer forecast models are suggesting a little bit more of an easterly track. That would be better news for florida, although certainly not out of the woods. The latest forecast simulations call for a 44 chance of Hurricane Force winds by sunday in miami. Thats a pretty high chance considering what Hurricane Force winds would do to a city of 2 million people. A commission airliner flew directly into Hurricane Irma today. Delta flight 431 from new york landed safely in san juan, puerto rico, just before the storm made landfall. Then the plane headed back to new york. Tonight a florida sheriff is threatening to arrest fugitives seeking shelter from the hurricane. Polk county Sheriff Grady Judd tweeted this. If you have a warrant, turn yourself into the jail. Its a secure shelter. We cannot and will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders and predators. Some critics pointed out some shelter seekers could be thrown in jail for something as minor as an outstanding parking ticket. Reporter a neighbor saw someone lurking outside her house with a flashlight and called police who found the doe dead and the fawn died about an hour later. Mark dickinson was arrested for animal cruelty. This person was frustrated with the deer eating his vegetation. Its pretty concerning that was their only crime and they died a pretty slow death which was pretty heart breaking. Reporter a statement from mr. Dickinsons attorney said, my client did not intend to harm the animals. The inflammatory claims by the Tiburon Police department havent been proven in court.
