A notorious inmate from San Francisco was killed in a prison riot this afternoon. 71yearold hugo pinel was killed when prisoners clashed at the California State Prison in sacramento. He was one of the 6 who launched a prison break that left 6 people dead. This is the aftermath from the prison yard. You can see the Corrections Officers going through all the evidence where the riot happened. Reporter steve large with our sister station in sacramento is outside the prison with more. Reporter this is a riot that involved 70 inmates. The one inmate killed, 11 others taken to area hospitals with stab wounds. No Correctional Officers were hurt in the riot. It started at 1 00 in the general population yard. The riot was controlled within 20 minutes. Guards used pepper spray and fired three warning shots with a rifle to bring the prisoners under control. A prison Spokesman Says the inmates used selfmanufactured knives in this riot as weapons. But so far, they dont know exactly how the riot started. It appeared to be spontaneous. Our Investigative Services unit is reviewing the video and collecting evidence within the facility. Reporter this is a maximum security prison housing the highest level of violent offenders. They are trying to determine what led to the riot. And right now, all the prisoners are held inside their cells while this investigation gets going. In folsom, steve large, kpix 5. Hugo pinel was sent to prison for rape in 1965. He later killed a correctional officer at a correctional facility in soledad back in 1971. He got life in prison for that. Tonight an Armed Robbery suspect has died after being shot by Oakland Police. Chopper 5 was over the scene in west oakland. It happened just after 2 00. The shooting was after a police pursuit. Officer say the suspect crashed the car and tried to carjack another one. Police swarmed the area at 27th and Martin Luther king, jr. Way to make the arrest. And thats when police say they saw the suspect was armed. When the suspect was attempting that carjacking, officer noticed that the suspect was in possession of a firearm. When officers approached the suspect took off running. What we do know is that there was a confrontation between the officers and the suspect. The suspect was still armed when the officers discharged their firearm. Suspect died at the hospital. Just 10 Oakland Police detectives work the streets every day. Now the fbi is stepping in to help. The Oakland Police department recently started a cold case website so people can provide tips anonymously. California drivers could soon be facing a huge challenge. Cutting their gas use in half. We need to filling out a way to undo measure b and thats a combination of technical challenges, legal issues and political issues. Police say that the suspect was targeting women at home alone late at night many of them asleep. And they say that it was as you said Security Camera video that was released after the suspect sexually assaulted an underaged girl this week and led to his arrest. Alameda police say physical evidence links the suspect, an unnamed 17yearold boy to five breakins and maybe more. Investigators say that the suspect entered those homes through an open window or unlocked door or in some cases cut through a screen. Once inside, police say that the suspect was apparently more interested in terrorizing his female victims than actually stealing anything. Very intrusive when someone comes into your home like i said most of the burglaries occur most burglars want to burglarize a home for the property in the home and they do that when no one is home so they can take their time and select the property. The occupants are home in this case and its frightening to people. Reporter now, police say its not entirely clear how the suspect was choosing his victims. An arrest tonight in the Armed Robbery of two local news crews along San Franciscos embarcadero. Police say 23yearold Michael Jones was one of three men who attacked a pair of cameramen at gunpoint last month and stole their gear. The other two are still on the loose. The photographers from kntv and ktvu were covering the murder of kate steinle on pier 14. The robbery is part of a rash of attacks on local news crews recently. The police wont say whether they think this case is connected to the others. Other bay area headlines tonight police have made an arrest in the case of robbery attempt at an east bay pharmacy. On monday police say a man went into the oak grove pharmacy in concord with a replica gun and demanded drugs. The pharmacist fought back biting the suspects finger. The man took off emptyhanded. He was caught today trying to rob another pharmacy. Police say that he was missing a finger. This massive fire in san leandro monday morning was arson. It destroyed a Grocery Store and damaged four other businesses. Police say after interviewing witnesses and reviewing the evidence and video they determined it was arson. That fire started at market near the corner of marina and doolittle drive and spread rapidly. Police want to find a woman who pulled off a daring escape by plunging off the bay bridge. This started when a car heading toward oakland crashed on the new span at about 3 a. M. Three women got out. One woman climbed over the rail and went into the water. A dump truck driver said that he picked up a woman near the toll plaza. She was soaking wet. He gave her a ride didnt know what was going on. Investigators say that car was reported stolen out of los angeles.
