You know, we have spent a lot of time over the last 24 hours talking about the kidnapping suspect but we wanted to take a moment and recognize what Denise Huskins has been through. Over the last few months. The fact is she was knocked off her career path in physical therapy, and also has endured public humiliation. This is a great day but its also a tragic day. Reporter we saw a glimpse of denise and her boyfriend aaron yesterday. A strong young couple after everything they have been through and truth is we had no idea what it was like to be them over the last few months. Its not its the awful crime itself, a masked man invading their home and drugged him and kidnapped and sexual assaulted her. But then after she was released, the police accused her of making the whole thing up. I thought there would be more open arms when they found her. They not only were questioned by the media, but by other individuals. By their employers. By the police. But they questioned themselves at a certain point because if everyone says youre wrong, you start to believe youre wrong. Its the shadow of accusation, phone calls that arent returned when she applies for jobs, the looks that she gets in the hallway, with everybody but her attorneys and her family who had absolute faith in her credibility, who had absolute faith in that she was telling the truth. She is an amazing courageous woman. Reporter strong woman, Strong Family and im told by a Family Member that denise is reaching back out now trying to get back into the field of physical therapy. Joe vazquez, kpix 5. We now know that Denise Huskins was not the intended kidnapping target. It was a case of mistaken identity. The kidnappers didnt realize until after she was tied up. The case affidavit says that the kidnappers were after aaron quinns exfiancee, who moved out of the home last year. But they went through with the crime and kidnapped huskins anyway. Turns out the accused kidnapper had targeted a vallejo neighborhood. Federal investigators say he and accomplices were honing their techniques before going after Denise Huskins. Kpix 5s cate caugiran on how the neighbors there fought back. Reporter kidnapping Denise Huskins might have been a mistake but the scene of the crime mare island was not. The affidavit has emails from the alleged kidnappers painting the picture of mare island as a Training Ground with nearby families used for real life practice. The kidnappers write, quote, we committed a Home Invasion on a whim. We entered many homes on mare island. The affidavit also detailed how the kidnappers used drones at night with heat signatures to see if people were inside. They even tested alarm systems and response times just to see how fast police could get out there. It reads like a movie. And the work of a reallife super village and neighbors fear much of it is true. We connected it with other incident on the island. It was a breakin that involved disconnecting the Surveillance System by unplugging the modem which is sophisticated for an average robber. Reporter but the group had some exceptions. If you had kids, were elderly or had ties not military or if your home had heavy surveillance, threat of you alone. Kim baskerville and his wife helped set up a Neighborhood Watch program here after their home was broken into six years ago. Why mare island . Why here . I think the isolation of it, the cutbacks in the Vallejo Police force over the past few years with the recession. Reporter the kidnapper acknowledged the lack of Police Presence claiming they set up camp in one of these abandoned warehouses far from the eyes of Vallejo Police. Its like somebody i dont know, like an invasion of privacy and you have no idea about it. It just it makes you rethink how safe anything really is right now. The city could have done a much better job of not making this look like an abandoned trash heap. Reporter the kidnappers say there was some good that came from their overnight lurking. They reported a peeping tom and stolen mustang from a man speeding through the neighborhood. On mare island, cate caugiran, kpix 5. There is still a lot of mystery rounding the suspect at the center of the vallejo kidnapping case. Reporter derek shore looks into the background of Matthew Muller. Reporter he was a marine then a harvard law student, then a practicing attorney. Now Matthew Muller is accused of being a monster, allegedly kidnapping and hold Denise Huskins for ransom and then trying it with a couple in dublin. We are referring questions to his attorney tom johnson. Reporter okay. No comment. Reporter you dont even want to say anything about what kind of a person he is or what this has done to the family . No. Sorry. Reporter that is who we understand to be a close family friend in from texas arriving at the muller house today not wanting to defend the 38year old. We turned to his attorney, tom johnson. It is true whats in the affidavit that he has a mental disease, bipolar disorder and certainly thats going to be a significant component to his defense. Reporter johnson wouldnt talk about the case further only saying they plan to plead not guilty adding, his client has suffered from Mental Illness for a few years now. Possibly around the same time the California Bar started a process to disbar him for allegedly failing to file paperwork for a client, taking money and lying about it. He will be officially disbarred in a few days. Many neighbors feel grateful they were not victims. I have a 20 somethingyear old daughterinlaw to comes with babies, so yes i feel very fortunate that no one in this neighborhood was targeted. Reporter derek shore, kpix 5. Muller is being held at the Alameda County jail. His next court date is the end of august. We will continue to bring you new developments on this story right here on television as well as on our website, cbssf. Com. We have breaking news tonight. Kpix 5s don ford has the answers in a story youll see only on 5. Reporter construction sites use water to control dust. But then perry devore saw where the water was coming from. I saw a contractor with a water hose to their tank filling up from a fire hydrant. Reporter he took this photo thinking he caught a thief. My first reaction was, who is paying for that . Reporter we went to find out and learned contractors at new construction sites across the bay area are doing the same thing but theres nothing illegal about it. Its because contractors rent these devices from the district. They are portable meters. This is what a portable meter consists of. Reporter looking closely, you can see the meters in the pictures that terry took. The portable meter lets the district know exactly how much water the contractorrers take. They get the same rate as nonsingle Family Residential customers and subject to the drought surcharge. Reporter from time to time, you will see a tanker truck or street sweeper connect directly to a hydrant that doesnt have one of these meters. But even then, it doesnt necessarily mean they are stealing the water. Some of the street sweepers and commercial ones will be mound on the vehicle so you might see a hose going to the hydrant. Reporter the Water District sends out inspectors to make sure contractors are using those meters. So far they havent caught any contractors stealing water during the drought. For don ford, kpix 5.
