It was a typical wednesday at union city pd until a woman and man rolled into the parking lot at 1 30 with this in the backseat of a pt cruiser. The sergeant that walked out to the car and noticed that it appeared to be some sort of large munitions possibly from a tank backed away from the area. Reporter not long after, the home of union city crime fighters became a temporary crime scene. Ever been evacuated from a Police Department . This was the first time. Reporter that is when the bomb squad stepped . It was eight to ten inches in diameter about 100 pounds. Reporter the couple who picked it up found it near some Railroad Tracks in an industrial neighborhood. Right now, officers are trying to acertain, because it was transported here exactly kind of the area. Reporter the lieutenant says for future reference, dont pick up a take round yourself and dump it in the wrappers littering your floorboards. Leave that to the pros. Reporter they had tough words as they have opposing interpretations of what this ordnance means. Mayor ed lee insists that the sanctuary city ordnance does allow the sheriff to coordinate the release of a prisoner with federal authorities or ice. But the sheriff is demanding that they bring a court order or a warrant for such prisoners before the jail will hand them over to the feds. There is nothing that prevented them from picking up the phone and letting them know you gave us, you brought back to our jurisdiction a multifelony serious offender and we are about to release. For the mayor to come out swinging like this is the fact that the mayor is backing away from the law he supported and he is looking for a scapegoat. That is typical for this mayor. He is saying it is one thing to follow the ordnance. But another thing to pick up the phone and let him know this guy is there. He is speaking out of both sides of his mouth. What is the point of the ordnance when it stipulates how Law Enforcement are to interface with ice. Cant have it both ways. He supported and signed the law. In late april, he faced his biggest test after riots exploded in the city in the wake of the death of freddie gray in police custody. Six officers have since been charged in the case. Despite the apology, some questioned whether police were easing up on arrests in protests. Homicides spiked in the weeks after the riots. There were 42 murders in may after 22 in april. And 15 in march. On wednesday, the Police Officers union issued its report on the riots and strongly condemned his leadership.
