Good evening, thanks for joining us. Im larry beil. Dan and alma are off tonight. Many of those russian ads attacked hillary clinton, or praised donald trump. Tonight facebook is turning them over to congressional investigators. The American People may eventually see them. Brian ross explains how the russians used the Menlo Park Company to reach american voters. Reporter after months of stonewalling congress, today facebook gave in. Its founder Mark Zuckerberg agreeing to turnover more than 3,000 russianlinked political ads that ran during last years election campaign. I dont want anyone to use our tools to undermine democracy. Thats not what we stand for. Reporter Russian Companies spent more than 100,000 on the ads. Many of them praising donald trump or attacking hillary clinton. Millions of americans saw them and just this week clinton said facebook has to own up to the problem. I dont think anybody can with a straight face say that the russians did not set out to influence our election, and they did so. This latest revelation about the way they bought ads on facebook and targeted them, were going to find out a lot more. Reporter until today facebook refused to reveal who paid for political ads. Zuckerberg says that will now change. We can do better. Reporter facebook at first had denied to congress they had posted any ads paid by the russians. When i raised these issues last winter, couldnt happen, they privately said no. Those are crazy ideas. Well, they werent crazy ideas. Reporter it was not just ads. Investigators say they have also found huge numbers of fake facebook pages linked to the russians. Like this one discovered by the New York Times supposedly an anticlinton father living in pennsylvania, but he didnt exist. The picture was actually of someone in brazil. Only facebook knows who paid for the ads and against whom they were directed. A new study shows a disproportionate amount of russianlinked fake news was aimed directly at the swing states in the last election. Brian ross, abc7 news, new york. East bay congressman Eric Swalwell believes the ads might be linked to President Trumps campaign. I also want to go and look at the ads that facebook turns over and hopefully we have the resources in congress to do this. And to see if there were duplicate ads not funded by these russian sources, but funded by other sources. That would tell us a lot if there was a coordinated kacampan by the Trump Campaign and russia.
