Eventually pull into downtown San Francisco. The tour was timed with the federal government officially pledging a big chunk of money to dig a tunnel under San Francisco. Heres nbcs Sergio Quintana right now. The train mezzanine level under the Transit Center looks like an empty and massive room that stretches for a couple of blocks underground under the mezzanine level is where trains will eventually pull in. Our initial operator will be caltrain, followed by high speed rail when they get to that alignment, and we are designed for a future of 12 trains per peak hour per direction. Among the first to tour the train level, which is called the box, is speaker emerita nancy pelosi. The room is even more massive than the mezzanine level in this animation provided by the transbay joint powers authority, the Group Responsible for building out the Transit Center. You can see what this level should eventually look like. This is where passengers will arrive in downtown San Francisco aboard caltrain and eventually high speed rail. If its ever completed. But the approximately two mile tunnel to get those trains here still needs to be built. Representative pelosi is here to tout the 3. 4 billion in federal money thats just been pledged to do that, she says. This will be like the Grand Central station of the west, except better because of high speed rail. I take the new york, boston, new york, washington all the time for civic events and the rest. This is in a class all by itself. Its something so very different. The federal money is about half of the cost to build out the rest of the box, complete with the six tracks and corresponding platforms and the tunnel from the current caltrain station, which will turn to go under Second Street before turning again and arriving at the Transit Center. This is where the trains will come in from under Second Street and will continue into the Transbay Center onto the platforms that are currently under the center. According to the chairman of the board of the transbay joint powers authority, they already have other money pledged for the project, but theres still a funding gap they need to fill. About 2 billion is what is needed to get to the target number, to make sure we have all the moneys in place before we start construction. Theyre looking for local, regional and state sources to fill that gap. In the meantime, the project is pushing ahead construction on the train tunnel, called the portal, is scheduled to begin sometime next year, but its not a quick job. Chairman g figures caltrain will be able to Begin Service here in about ten years in San Francisco, Sergio Quintana nbc bay area news. Another notable day in court for former President Trump today a confession from his former lawyer, michael cohen. Cohen returned to the witness stand in trumps hush money trial during his crossexamination, cohen admitted he conned the Trump Organization out of thousands of dollars he would pocket cash intended to be paid to someone else, cohen said. Arrest warrants out for the leaders of israel and hamas. It was issued by the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal court, karim khan is the chief prosecutor, and he says he believes israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister and three hamas leaders are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the gaza strip and in israel. Khan must now request the warrants from a pretrial panel of three judges. The panel typically takes two months to decide if the proceedings can move forward. Netanyahu today said the decision will cast an everlasting mark of shame on the international court. The state Department Also strongly condemned the case. What a travesty of justice. What a disgrace the prosecutors absurd charges against me and israels defense minister are merely an attempt to deny israel the basic right of self defense. There should be no equivalence between israel and hamas. None hamas is a Brutal Terrorist Organization that carried out the worst massacre of jews since the holocaust. Israel is not a member of that court, and even if the arrest warrants are issued, israeli leaders do not face any immediate risk of prosecution. But khans announcement does deepen israels isolation as it presses ahead with its war against hamas and the threat of arrest could make it difficult for israeli leaders to travel abroad. Tensions are high in the middle east, with the israelhamas war entering its seven month, seven month and the untimely death of irans president only adding to the uncertainty. As we mentioned at the top of the hour, iranian president Ebrahim Raisi was killed along with the countrys foreign minister and six others when their helicopter crashed in irans mountainous northwest region. A Senior Biden Administration official says there are no signs of foul play. Irans Vice President now stepping in until new elections within 50 days. Our political analyst Larry Gerston is here now. And, larry, how important was president raisi in iran . I know theres a Supreme Leader and theres the president , number two, behind the Supreme Leader. As a matter of fact, who, by the way, khamenei is 85 years of age, raisi was 63. So a lot of people thought that he would be the person to go ahead and replace him. And while in that office, he did a lot of things. He put down that 2022 revolt led by women about head coverings and did a pretty good job of that before that, hed served a Judicial Committee where he oversaw the beheadings of 5000 people. He is, or was, i should say, quite the character. And the Vice President is supposed to be just as conservative as he is. Yes, he will take over. Most likely voted in most likely. Yeah. Theyve got 50 days, as you said. So well go from there. But he seems to be the anointed favorite. And that goes a long way if youre in that position. Iran, a big supporter of some global terrorism efforts around the world. And including they launched an attack against israel last month, launching dozens of drones and missiles. Fortunately, israel fended those off. But how much did raisi play a part in that . Or was that the Supreme Leader . Well, hes the Supreme Leader, calls the shots, basically, but he doesnt say, i want you to go here. I want you to go there. He says, look, we are here to disrupt countries we dont like. Its that simple. So you go, you guys figure this out. And iran, of course, has probably been the most disruptive of all the nations in that region. Think about all the countries where they involved with terrorist groups lebanon, syria, yemen, the list goes on. You can see all these countries bahrain, it goes on forever. And of course gaza, they are the suppliers of material and money in all of these areas for various terrorist groups. And so they are by far the most disruptive nation in the middle east. Okay, speaking of gaza and hamas, its one of those groups. What impact is riyazs death likely to have on the israelhamas war . Well, as we said, iran supports hamas. Thats where they get most all the material material from military material. Beyond that, its hard to know if theres going to be much of a change, given the conservative nature of the leadership that, that, that thats what carries the whole thing. We do know this much. The United States had more pull with iran when we were in that Nuclear Treaty where we oversaw, along with six other nations, just how much Nuclear Material they could produce. But but when president , former President Trump pulled this out, that ended any semblance of a relationship which was weak at that. So we dont have much to say about them. They have nothing to say about us. And the question is whether theyll make any changes. Probably not likely. Yeah. All this still unfolding, all these new developments still coming in. Okay Larry Gerston, thank you so much, raj. Janell. Thank you larry. Thank you. The Supreme Court backed away from a legal battle between parents and a School District when it comes to transgender students. This stems from a policy in a maryland School District put in place four years ago. It allows teachers to work with gender nonconforming and transgender students to make them feel included. It also bars those teachers from sharing what theyre doing without a students consent. Some Parents School the district sued the district. They claim the policy violates their constitutional right to direct the care of their children. A district judge dismissed the case, but the parents brought it to the Supreme Court. Today, the Supreme Court said it would not hear the case because the parents have no legal standing. Well, bay area mayor is now in china. Take a look. It broke out late last night in a vacant building in japantown. The owners of that building told firefighters that Homeless People were living inside. Investigators are now looking into whether those Homeless People started the fire. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Up next, a miraculous rescue in the north bay. Were going to show you a chopper rescue after a car went over a cliff in sonoma county. Also, a glitch on google maps that could be steering customers away from some businesses in the east bay. Well explain. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Lots of 70s today. Right now holding on to 78 in concord. Well talk about hotter weather tomorrow and then the big weather change on the way for the upcoming we yesterday that man was found 300ft down from the wreck. The sonoma Sheriffs Department says the car crashed on highway one north of jenner. A helicopter crew had to fly in for the rescue. First responders found the victim laying at the bottom of a tree. There, he was flown to a local hospital and is critically injured, but is expected to survive. A cluster of bay area businesses Say Technology is hurting their bottom line, and theyre blaming google maps for making their area invisible. Lets bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman with the explanation. So the businesses are there, but not really according to google, right . According to google. But they are really there. And, you know, we lose a lot of these maps to find things. And even if a single intersection doesnt show up for long stretches of time, you might get lost. And if you get lost, businesses can lose money. Like a mysterious bermuda rectangle, this entire intersection went missing. I mean, its here in the real world, but on google maps, the road where newark boulevard and jarvis avenue meet recently disappeared. Its kind of weird. Not an ideal situation. If your business is right there. They look around a lot, you know, and they still keep calling. We couldnt find you. Mary fazio says fantastic cuts, gets calls regularly from customers who know theyre nearby but cant quite find the spot using google maps. Actually, we have this complaint for a long time. We tried it and the intersection showed up on the map and took us to the shop. But just down the road, newark buffet has been having similar issues coming and going even over here. Yeah, you know, i have to go here. Thats how i know ive been here and i got ten, 15 years already, right . I was like, it, i wont go this way. I dont want to go that way. You know what im saying . Right . The good news. Not Everyone Needs a phone to find a business. But they get here. Oh, yeah . Oh, yeah. Before there is no google. Nothing. Everybody find the address. Right so here. What happened . How did the intersection just briefly disappear . I reached out to google to ask about the map glitch, but have not heard back. I guess the lesson might be this happens occasionally, so maybe lets not be quite so dependent on our phones. So i need to drag out the thomas guide, or go back to triple a and get a. Remember the thomas guide. Absolutely. All those maps. Yeah. Okay thanks so much scott. Lets go outside right now and take a live look at San Francisco. Such a Beautiful Day in the city and around the bay area. And it looks like its going to be like this all week. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Happy monday. Yeah you guys to you know a lot of this week is going to be comfortable in sunshine. But how do we feel about some february weather coming back. Do we have an option in your question i dont think so. At this point. I take it you guys are maybe lukewarm on it. Okay. All right, i know its kind of going to be a hard turn for us once we get to that upcoming weekend. Temperatures going to be much, much colder in that forecast. Lets go ahead and move it into that microclimate weather. And well show you whats controlling that weather. Right now. Its this area of High Pressure thats just offshore. Its going to keep the rain line for now to washington and oregon. And also allow more of that warm weather as you roll through tomorrow. But eventually well start to get in on some of this colder air thats tucked out here across the gulf of alaska. And its going to change our temperatures and big time. So were going to show you more details on that coming up in about a minute and a half. But lets roll it right into your Tuesday Morning forecast. Already got most of monday out of the way. So as we look into that morning i really see a nice start here for us. Mostly sunny skies, temperatures here in the low 50s. Just kind of some good weather to get out and get going. Whatever you got to do tomorrow, well be down here to 51, in San Francisco, in the east bay at 53. So maybe a light jacket here to start, but temperatures are going to warm up pretty quickly. Look at these numbers down here across the south bay. By the afternoon were going to be back up to 80 in cupertino 83 for morgan hill. Be a little bit breezy at times, but only ten to about 15mph here through the east bay 80 in vallejo 83 pleasanton 77 in hayward, right up against the coastal areas. Were in the 60s from Half Moon Bay to daly city, then right on down to redwood city. And palo alto will be in the upper 70s to low 80s up to San Francisco. Even some 70s here in the mission. So thats going to be a nice day for you. Then up towards the marina 63 and for the north bay 84, in santa rosa and then coastal areas from bodega bay to point reyes will be in the 60s. So were coming in with nice weather tomorrow, but ahead weve got not one but two different cold fronts going to be dropping down here, wednesday into saturday. So with two reinforcing shots here, some cooler air, its going to drop our temperatures in big time. I wanted to show you this ten day forecast. So you get kind of this overview of how things are trending. Well be at 81 on wednesday. And look at this by saturday 67 degrees. So a chilly start to the first part of the weekend. By sunday a little bit better there 73. And then were going to hang on to some 70s as we roll into next week. Now, as temperatures drop on saturday, we will be tracking some rainfall to the north. Right now it doesnt look like wed be getting any rainfall, but certainly some unusual rain here from seattle to portland, southern oregon, anywhere from a half to about one inch for them. Were going to keep a close watch on that rain line. A little bit of a change in that could bring some unusual rain our way, but right now doesnt look like anything in the mix for us right here on the 7day forecast in San Francisco, were going to hang on to 60s through friday. Then we drop it down to those chilly 50s on saturday. But i think the biggest headline will be for the inland valleys from 85 tomorrow to 67 on saturday. So some nice brisk weather to wake you up on saturday, get out to the Farmers Market or whatever. And you know, you got that like invigorating rush to get out the door. And this is memorial day weekend. This is supposed to be like the what . The kickoff of summer. This is supposed to be nice and hot. I know the unofficial start. You know, by monday well be in the upper 70s. So still some grilling weather. Getting there, some good barbecuing. Okay. Thanks, jeff. Thanks, jeff. Sometimes theres no ambulance available to respond to an emergency. But as nbc bay areas Jodi Hernandez tells us, just buying more ambulances may not actually help. Ever since covid, the ems system has been in a state of crisis. Thats how Contra Costa County fire chief louis burchard describes what emergency workers are faced with too many calls for ambulance service, not enough resources to get patients into the e. R. In a timely fashion. I suppose you could say that more ambulances would help. However it doesnt really solve the problem. The department added 18 ambulances in september, but burchard says the real issue isnt just an increased demand. He says theres a severe shortage of paramedics and hospital ers are so swamped they often cant offload patients right away, forcing ambulances
