Things. But we want to make sure people know about this. Yes. Lets look over here at some video we have from the weekend. This is along 680. You can tell because of the color of the tape. No, you cant. This is 680 because im telling you thats whats going on. When they had their work going on between al costa and 580, actually both directions were impacted by the southbound resurfacing work going on. So that is a continued project. And well keep telling you when there are lane closures. The freeway was open, but it was congested throughout the entire area because of those lane restrictions. Now, another section was highway 37 that was fully closed eastbound. The second weekend. Weve had this. You can see the water there between mare island and sears point is where that was going on. Theyve resurfaced it. They still have to restripe it. So even though eastbound highway 37 opened just minutes before 5 a. M, when it was scheduled, lets look at the map. Well talk about overnight work going on. Both directions are susceptible, but its likely mostly going to be on the eastbound direction. They have to do striping work after they repaved it, and thats overnight. So youll have some alternating lane closures. Thats scheduled again to clear by the morning commute. But there will be restrictions overnight. Right now this morning we do have the bill typical out of the area of vallejo and in towards sears point, as were talking about westbound with the typical slowing same bill for highway for the bay bridge toll plaza. Carry thats not a surprise. In fact, we have a pretty predictable pattern. The only thing thats surprising is theres no major drama. Okay theres no drama in the Weather Department either. Were starting out clear temperatures in the low 50s, and its also a light wind out there. Looking at martinez, we have a wind coming in at about eight miles per hour. Its 52 degrees. And also mostly sunny. And were going to continue to see sunshine throughout the day. Really nice trend there. Upper 60s at 11 00 and at noon. Were at 72 degrees and mid 70s as we go into the early afternoon, eventually reaching a high of 78 degrees. Well see a high of 75 in Mountain View and 69 in san mateo. In napa today, 78 degrees. Now it does get slightly warmer for tomorrow, so well take a look at those temperatures and a look ahead to your memorial day weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. Marcus. This morning, moving you forward on a vision to extend caltrans footprint in San Francisco, providing much easier access for peninsula commuters. Today in the bay Ginger Conejero saab live for us in San Francisco and ginger. This project is set to get some big funding. Thats right. Marcus, good morning to you. Lets revisit this project. Its called the portal and it will extend caltrain rail line, which currently ends on fourth and king street here in the city into salesforce Transit Center, which is more in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Now, the Transit Center has been up and running for years now, but below the street level bus concourse is another massive structure that was built to accommodate trains. Trains that cannot yet get there. Thats where this project, led by the transbay joint powers authority, steps in. It recently got an over 3 billion boost from the federal government, the head of the agency recently shared. The portal is now in the engineering phase of the Capital Investment grant, meaning nearly half of the 8 billion price tag would be funded. Now lets take a look at some video here. This is animation from the transbay joint powers authority. You can see how the trains will go underground. Then it will turn under Second Street and eventually arrive at the Transit Center under natoma and minnie streets. It is not a long stretch that would be connected, but the price tag has ballooned over the years. Unfortunately, that number will continue to climb the longer it takes to get this project started. The agency is still short about 2 to 3 billion today. However, federal, state and regional leaders are celebrating the progress moving forward with the portal. They will have a press conference and a bit of a celebration later at 11 this morning at the Transit Center. Also when this project is completed or is expected to be completed, which is not until years from now, it is also expected to connect northern and Southern California with that high speed rail project. Not until 2032, possibly, but that is a bigger vision for the state. So exciting things that were moving one step closer to marcus, one step closer to getting places easier and faster will be a little bit older to. All right. Thanks, ginger. They take walkers on that high speed train all right, well see. Hey, lets take a live look outside right now. We can move all around taking a look in san jose. A little cooler this weekend. Although it was very pleasant. Carrie it was nice. And once that wind kicked up, it got really windy during the evening. So were going to see that same pattern continue. But were also going to be just a touch warmer over the next couple of days. Our valleys will see High Temperatures in the mid to upper 80s for tomorrow, and then it cools down in time for the memorial day weekend. And those temperatures feeling much nicer in santa rosa at 9 00. Were in the upper 50s. Were headed to the upper 70s for today. Well reach that High Temperature right at about 3 to 4 00 today, and then start to see those temperatures coming back down. Its going to be a nice one. Well talk about that gradual warm up in a few minutes. Mike has a look at hopefully some cooling numbers at the gas pump. You know were no longer on the best of list for the state carry, but thats because folks, the rest of the states actually dropping quicker. And maybe more dramatically than we are here. But the best from hayward is still 455 at our stores on hesperian boulevard. Ive seen a number of places with their price point dropping even over the weekend. Sunnyvale has 469 at National Petroleum on old San Francisco road and in the north bay. The bottom number here, mill valley, has the best of 475 at arco on redwood highway. Of course, you can report these in your neighborhood, or you can retrieve them on gasbuddy. Com on the roadways. Right now, were looking at a pretty smooth flow of traffic. A typical pattern as far as the building goes, but i have to correct this. Highway 37 did reopen eastbound from the weekend closure, but tonight westbound, the entire westbound direction is scheduled to close for striping work. It looks like theyre doing alternating lane roadway closures for the full freeway. So tonight westbound. Westbound for the next couple of nights. Eastbound will be in the future. And were looking at the bay bridge. The current is the backup back to you. Wow. That says monday morning right there it is. Were speaking of that commute, mike, for the first time in months, highway one is open again ahead for you this morning on today in the bay. Were going to tell you the difference its already making for businesses forced to wait out a long closure, a local tech company says a computerized voice doesnt sound like a certain someone. Its not her, they say. Sure sounds like it, though. Lets take you out to the futures. The dow will open above 40,000 for the first time in all of history today. Wow. Plus, you can make a positive difference in the life of a rescue dog. Keep it here. Were going to tell you all about it. Look at we know you care. [music plays] but if this is all too real for you and your loved ones. Make the call. Because we care too. Home instead. To us, its personal. Out in santa rosa, much of the north bay. Its a nice clear view. We have a lot of sunshine and not too many issues with fog. Were in the upper 50s at 9 00 and at 1 00 at 74 degrees, and were headed toward a beautiful afternoon with comfortable temperatures. A little bit warmer tomorrow. So well talk about that. And the rest of the weeks forecast coming up in a few minutes. And right now were looking at oakland where actually coming toward us. I just saw a bump up in the volume. Nothing dramatic, but its more cars than weve seen. Or more vehicles, i should say, in the southbound direction. Overall, oakland looks great. There is a backup, a weird pattern at the bay bridge toll plaza, and i see some more slowing. There may be a crash on the east shore freeway. Well good morning, very happy monday to you. The dow industrials this morning will open above 40,000 for the first time in history because on friday they closed above 40,000 for the first time in history. People are just satisfied with the phones they have and its hit apples bottom line. Over the weekend, blue origin launched six passengers into a short hop into space, notable because blue origin had been grounded for quite some time after an unmanned launch went awry. This one went fine. Former air force captain ed dwight became the oldest person ever to go into space. It was absolutely terrific and the views, i mean, just even i couldnt see it. I could see. Absolutely fantastic. Now, actor William Shatner had been the oldest person in space. Theyre both 90, but dwight is a few months older than shatner. Now. Dwight in the middle in this picture was the first black astronaut candidate back in the days of the space race. President kennedy insisted on diversifying the team, but nasa never picked him. He went on to become a very talented sculptor. His name is ed dwight. Give him a google. He is a super interesting guy. San franciscos open i announced this morning it was suspending the use of one of its ai voices, introduced last week. You can choose from various voices like breeze and ember and juniper and sky turns out sky sounds a lot like the actress scarlett johansson. The company says it didnt mean to make it sound like scarlett johansson, though. Scarlett johansson did play in a movie called her, where she plays an ai. And sam altman, the ceo of openai, says its his favorite movie. But the voice is absolutely not to sound like scarlett johansson. Listen for yourself. Heres a movie, then a live demo from chatgpt. Hows your day going . Im doing great. Pure coincidence. I am quite sure its close, but close. Yeah like the ending. There are a lot of car commercials where you think youre hearing morgan freeman. Its not. They never say it is. Morgan freeman. But youre like, in your brain. Youre like. But it isnt. Yeah. Its like that on the Kelly Clarkson show. You always hear its like his name. Im like, morgans not sitting at home just waiting. I wonder, do they use ai . Ive always wondered that. Or just i think there are some voice actors who are very talented at coming very close. Yeah. Anyway, you cant have whoever that was on your chatgpt anymore, right . Exactly. Interesting all right. Thanks. You bet. Well, just in time for the return of warmer weather. The scenic highway one. Once again open in both directions between the bay area and big sur road. Crews spent nearly two months on repairs after heavy storm damage back in march. For now, the reopening includes a 24 hour rotating one way traffic section. But for nearby businesses impacted by the full closure, the reopening means everything. Weve had an Immediate Response from our guests wanting to come and see big sur and visit the various properties and just enjoy the coast, such a pretty area. Caltrans crews are still working on slide damage further south on the other side of big sur, with the hopes that that section can reopen by at least this fall. Well, new at six the king of late night reportedly soaking in some sun. And monterey, a restaurant confirming to our affiliate jimmy fallon grabbed a bite to eat there at the old Fishermans Wharf on friday. An employee says that fallon actually ordered clam chowder, took some photos, shook some hands with fans. Theres no word what brought him there to monterey in the first place, but you can watch fallon on the tonight show right here on nbc bay area. Its going to air for you monday through friday, and you dont want to miss it. Poor guy. Cant even order a cup of clam chowder with everyone saying, and he had a bread bowl in it. Thats a good problem to have, i guess, right . All right. Well, this morning for you, you might want to give your best friend an extra treat today because we are celebrating National Rescue dog day. We love rescues around here. These, in fact, are photos of some of our family members who have been rescued. These are members of the today in the bay team are website is using the national day to draw attention to ways everyone can give back to the rescue dog community. Theyre asking rescue dog owners to share a photo of their pup on social media, using the hashtag National Rescue dog day. You can also help give back by volunteering or donating pet supplies to local animal shelters and if youre thinking about maybe bringing a dog into your family, consider adopting a rescue. Fostering pets who need a home is also a great option, marcus says. Im always looking on on the rescue sites because i rescued a little dog, and honestly, hes one of the best ive ever had. Yeah, yeah. All right, lovey dovey. Yeah. You do love him too. I do immensely. I want to bring him into work today, but you know, and if you did once you did during the pandemic, im telling you once. No, i did once after the pandemic because he was so used to me being there. And remember, he didnt move. He just sat here, didnt make noise at all. Not a peep like you never even knew that he was here. So yeah, it was fun. Yeah. All right, all right. Time to take the dog out for a walk. Good weather for that. Its great weather this morning, and theres just a little bit of dampness on the grass. Or the dog is like, oh, im going to stay over here on the sidewalk. Were going to have some clear skies throughout the day, things drying out, but also a lot of pollen floating through the air. Olive trees are high. Grass is moderate. Everything else is fairly, has a sneezing. As were trying to enjoy this beautiful weather and were looking at temperatures today just a little bit above whats average for this date. Now in santa rosa for this day, were usually up to about 76 degrees, but were expecting a high of 79. You can see what were going to forecast for today. San francisco slightly above average. And in oakland 73 is above the average high of 68. So were also going to see some warmer than normal temperatures for today. But then again tomorrow its going to be even warmer. Not expected to set any records. But were up to 84 in santa rosa. While San Francisco will see a high of 71. And were in the low 80s from fremont to san jose to san martin, and then upper 80s for fairfield tomorrow, and then a slight cool down for wednesday. And that will be the trend through the rest of the week as we get a couple of storm systems moving into the Pacific Northwest. Were not going to see any of that rain, but we will definitely have a cool down as High Pressure builds to the south and those storm systems move to our north, thats going to give us a very strong wind flow coming off of the ocean, and thats going to bring down those temperatures for the weekend. So take a look at walnut creek out ten days, going from low 80s tomorrow to only mid 60 on saturday. That is a big cool down that we dont often see for the memorial day weekend, so make some plans to get outside. Its going to be great with mostly sunny sky throughout the week and temperatures going once again from the peak on tomorrow in the low 80s inland to upper 60s for the weekend, and San Francisco will reach a high of 70 tomorrow, but only 59 on saturday. Mike, youre looking closely at that bay bridge backup. And, carrie, were looking over here toward the bay bridge where we had some unusual patterning for the lanes there. Everything cleared up, so no need to show the backup. Now. We just want to show you the approach and some more slowing because theres another issue on the approach. Its farther back, i know, but its the slowing through. Richmond now the build here is right near a crash. Wanted to let you know the crash is actually going that way toward the Richmond Bridge, eastbound 580 off the central and off of the east shore freeway. So that is an issue just on the side of the roadway. And its not your main commute through the area. Rest of your commute is nice. Back to you guys. Thanks, mike. It is 622 right now. Plus up in flames, the overnight fire ripping through a building in the south bay. What may have been the cause . This is today in the bay good monday morning, 630 right now. Thanks for starting your day with us. Im laura garcia and im marcus washington. Lets get a look at that forecast for you this morning. Meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect across the bay area this morning. Not looking bad at all. Not bad at all. We had some beautiful weather over the weekend and that continues today. It will be slightly warmer over the next few days, but only a few of us will really notice the difference as we take a look at our highs. Our morning start in the low 50s and then our High Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70s for the east bay and the south bay, up to 79. In santa rosa, San Francisco, 68 degrees. And well bring it up a few degrees for the interior valleys for tomorrow. Fairfield up to 87 degrees, while san jose will be in the lower 80s. Ill have more on the forecast coming up in a few minutes. Well, new overnight a building fire in san jose is under investigation. It all started a little after midnight at north fifth street. This is near jackson and japantown. This is a building that was under renovation. Firefighters had to actually cut a hole in the roof of that building in order for those flames to come out in them, to fight the flames. Now, while the cause is under investigation, a captain with san jose fire says that the owners of that building tell them that theyve actually experienced issues with unhoused people entering that building. In the past, theyve had some issues with Homeless People staying in the building or in camping in the area of the building. The possibility exists, i dont know, but the possibility exists that they might be parted from track one. They might be part of that issue. As far as the source of the of the of the fire, i cant tell you that thats a Legal Certainty by any stretch of the imagination. So thats one of the theories that were examining at this time. Now, firefighters do tell us, tell us that that building was unoccupied at the time of the fire developing right now. A suspected gunman, police say, terrorized a south bay neighborhood is in the hospital this morning with life threatening injuries. Today in the bays kris sanchez joins us live at San Jose Police headquarters. And, chris, the Quick Response from San Jose Police, i understand, may have made all the difference here. You know, that suspect was still firing shots when officers arrived here at the scene where we moved since the last hour, but it is a very densely populated area. So had officers not arrived, who knows what could have happened . There are still people waiting to get back into their homes and this all started at 4 00 this afternoon. I want to show you the scene here. Theres still crime tape up around several parking lots. Thats because these parking lots back up to an apartment complex. And police tell us thats where the shooting happened. It was in the area closer to those apartment s. Now, in the video from yesterday, you can see investigators honing in on a gray minivan with flat tires and a broken window that was after suspects was shot by police. This is in the area of colmar drive and story road. Now, this was about 4 00 in the afternoon yesterday when people called 911 to report hearing shots and according to the sdpd spokesman, the suspect was still firing those shots when officers arrived. Its a little concerning because theyre both little girls and were constantly taking walks and, its a little alarming to know that that happened here. We did talk with neighbors who say they didnt know that man. Some people who lived nearby were forced to stay away from their homes late into the night. And as i mentioned just a few moments ago, there are still people who are waiting to go back home. Some people stayed elsewhere for the night. So today the investigation will continue, not only by the San Jose Police departments internal affairs unit, but also the Santa Clara County district attorneys office, which is protocol when an officer is involved in a shooting. No officers were injured in this shooting. The suspect, though, does have life threatening injuries. In san jose, kris sanchez today in the bay had to be frightening for those neighbors around there. Thanks chris for the very latest. Well, breaking overnight, the country of iran appoints a new president. This is after its former president died in a Helicopter Crash over the weekend. Today in the bays bob redell joining us from the newsroom this morning. And, bob, how are local iranians actually reacting to this news . Good morning, jim marcus. Theres not much love lost for iranian president ibrahim raisi, who had been sanctioned by the United States over his involvement in the mass execution of thousands of Political Prisoners back in 1988. At the end of the iraniraq war. Within the past 24 hours, iran confirmed that raisi, along with the Iranian Foreign minister and two other dignitaries, were killed in a Helicopter Crash in foggy weather while traveling back from a visit to the Iranian Border with azerbaijan. We spoke with a man with a group called the iranianamerican community of northern california. He tells us that iranians he spoken with are hopeful this crash could weaken the current regime and make way for change driven by the people. This is all because the Iranian Regime is afraid of the next nation wide uprising, which in no doubt is going to happen sooner or later. This guy was a murderer. He was a he was one of those people that was responsible for killing Political Prisoners. I dont think that many people are that sad. And maybe some people are a little happy inside. In iran, the president is actually second in command, the countrys supreme leader, the ayatollah khamenei, remains in control. President raisi was considered to be a possible successor successor to the supreme leader. Irans first Vice President , mohammad mokhber. Hes been named interim president. Iranian law requires a president ial election be called within 50 days. Khamenei says there will be no disruption to state affairs. Marcus all right. Thanks, bob. Now, our team has been sending out updates about this story from the moment it broke. If you havent already, make sure you download our free nbc bay area news app. Well, new at six. Its not bad at all. You know, i like getting up in the morning, walking outside and not having to wear a jacket. You mean at 2 00 . 3 a. M . Yeah. I dont wear a jacket. You know, look, my time outside is minimal, but, i mean, its not too bad. Yeah were up early, so, you know, our temperatures are nice and cool to start as youre stepping out. Its in the low 50s in dublin and fremont. And were in the upper 40s in San Francisco. And were going to see temperatures going from low 50s to we know its going to warm up here in castro valley, going from 51 now to seeing those High Temperatures in the mid 70s for today. And were going to be slightly above average with our highs this afternoon headed up to 80 in concord today, but mostly 70s elsewhere across the rest of the bay area. And mike, now you have a crash jamming up highway four. I do carry this is already expected to have a build here into pittsburgh, but its worse because there are as many as three lanes blocked right now by a crash. There are injuries reported. I dont know how significant two vehicles have the traffic jammed up all the way back. Now look, buchanan. Major surface street seeing more traffic flow as well. Once you get over to railroad then kirker pass road of course down to yvr ignacio valley road things are moving much more smoothly. It does keep concord and the walnut creek area moving smoother and lighter through Pleasant Hill as well, though now overnight we will have a closure of westbound 37. He spoke at the graduation at morehouse college. Now weve talked before about the president s push to attract more black voters. And he faced the expected protests over israel and palestine. Today, the president will celebrate jewish heritage month at the white house. Former President Trump was in dallas getting an endorsement from the nra. You may not recall when trump was first president. He was actually not that supportive of the nra, saying lawmakers were too scared of the gun lobby. Before he was president , he supported the assault weapons ban. Many president s changed their outlook based on evolving thought and politics. President obama was for quite some time against gay marriage. Donald trump now very much supportive of the nra. Trump will be back in court today. There will be more crossexamination of his former lawyer, michael cohen, then the defense takes over if they dont call trump to the stand. And i dont think they will, then the case could be in a jurys hand by the end of the week. Its possible by the end of the week, well know if a former president is also a felon or if trump beat the first of four criminal cases against him. Speaking of courts, an Extraordinary Development as the prosecutor for the International Criminal court, which we often refer to as the hague, accused Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Defense secretary, as well, and three members of hamas with war crimes. Heres the lead prosecutor that israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu and minister of defense yoav galant bear criminal responsibility for the following International Crimes committed on the territory of the state of palestine from at least the 8th of october, 2023. The crimes include starvation of civilians as a method of warfare, willfully causing great suffering, serious injury to body or health, or cruel treatment, willful killing or murder, and intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population, as well as crimes against humanity of extermination and or murder. Again, what youre seeing here is the lead prosecutor for the icc. The entire court has not yet agreed on these charges, but the prosecutor wants arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and one other israeli leader and three hamas. And again, three hamas leaders also stand accused. But this sort of equivalency is an anathema to israel, which sees itself as fighting terror and the accusation of conducting an extermination has got to wound deeply. The icc will issue arrest warrants the same way it issued an arrest warrant for vladimir putin. A lot more coverage about this issue throughout the day, though. Note neither israel nor the usa is a member of the icc, and netanyahus office has not yet offered public reaction to that accusation. Laura. All right. One will continue to follow. Thank you. Scott it is 647 right now, and may is Womens Health month. And advocates are highlighting the need for genetic testing as part of treatment plans. Linsey livingston found out she had Breast Cancer back in 2019 after a lumpectomy and six weeks of radiation. She was made aware of the history of disease in her family. She took a genetic test testing positive for the brca one gene mutation. She underwent a bilateral double mastectomy as a way to prevent Breast Cancer from reoccurring. Surgeons also removed her ovaries and fallopian tubes to reduce her risk of ovarian cancer. Livingston now advocates for genetic testing for women as a preventative measure. But what i appreciate about genetic tests is that it helps you to understand your predispositions and your hereditary risk, and its just really important, especially in the black community, that we are discussing our family history. We are discussing our risk. We are having these conversations. Livingston is the founder of the nonprofit survive her.
