And a special day to say thank you to mom. How the bay area is showing appreciation on this mothers day. The news at five starts right now. Thanks for joining us. Im Terry Mcsweeney and im gia vang. Today a sad goodbye, but a joyful celebration of life has glide memorial honored the late reverend Cecil Williams. More than 60 years ago, the reverend arrived at glide in San Franciscos tenderloin neighborhood. And today, the community lifted in praise and worship to honor his legacy. We shall overcome. We shall overcome, shall overcome. Today we hope over the decades, reverend williams transformed the congregation as a pioneer of civil rights activism, lgbtq inclusivity, and service to the neighborhood. Nbc bay areas Sergio Quintana takes us to glide for the special service. Today. The first thing you need to know about this special service dedicated to reverend Cecil Williams is it is not a solemn memorial. This is a celebration. Its now been nearly three weeks since reverend williams passed away. He was 94. His daughter, kimberly williams, was with him. It was a bright, sunny morning. It was a fine day to take his freedom flight and liberate himself from the mortal vessel. He was full of joy and light that day. I want everyone to know he was radiant. Cecil williams arrived at glide Memorial Church in 1963. Through the decades, he led the church in civil rights actions, openly invited the Lgbtq Community into the congregation, and was an early aids Health Care Advocate and of course, was a steady supporter of the diverse residents of the tenderloin but his efforts went beyond this neighborhood and the city. At todays memorial, a delegation from all levels of government paid their respects, including a message from Vice President kamala harris, which was delivered by reverend amos brown, leader of San Franciscos third baptist church. I am grateful for his tireless efforts to uplift some of our nations most vulnerable communities. Along with the speeches were some tearful testimonials from people who say reverend williams saved their lives. People like bayview resident rhonda york. I came from the tenderloin, you know, and its hard out here. But mr. Williams made things better. Just a little bit better. And ever since he told me that i was a child of god, i always believed that im. Im clean and sober 12 years today, and i give thanks to glide memorial as politicians, artists and other Community Leaders paid their respects inside the sanctuary, we outside the neighborhood also turned out to celebrate a man who dedicated his life to service to the community for decades in San Francisco. Im Sergio Quintana, nbc bay area news. Just into our newsroom, a sad update to a story we first brought you last night at 11. The five year old child pulled from the water in Contra Costa County has died. It happened around 430 yesterday on bethel island. Police got a call about a five year old who fell into the water near the back of a home. Rescue crews pulled the child from the water about 15 minutes later. Paramedics performed cpr, rushed the child to the hospital where that child later died. No other details being released right now. Well dueling demonstrations at stanford university, jewish and nonjewish students organized an interfaith march and rally for peace this afternoon. They marched from the oval to white plaza. That is where a propalestinian encampment is set up. Propalestinian protesters held a dueling rally at white plaza. Weve learned the jewish students and their allies were asked to leave the area by Campus Security due to socalled heightened security concerns. However, there was no confrontation between the groups. Tensions are especially high this weekend, as israel launches an invasion into rafah. Nbc bay areas emma goss is there, and well have a live report for us tonight at six. Last week, President Biden warned that the u. S. Would withhold weapons if israel launched an all out offensive on rafah. But on meet the press this morning, secretary of state Antony Blinken declined to identify the biden administrations red line with israel. Instead, blinken repeated concerns about israels invasion without detailing how civilians would be protected. What weve seen over the last few months is a deep concern on our part about the possibility of a Major Military operation in rafah, given the damage it would do to civilians. There are more than 1. 4 million gazans in rafah, most of whom have moved from other parts of gaza. Absent a credible plan to get them out of harms way and to support them. The president s been clear for some time that we couldnt and would not support a Major Military operation in rafah. Well, blinken went on to say the conflict is incredibly complex because of hamass strategy of hiding under schools, hospitals and apartment buildings. In other words, using human shields. He said while israel may have broken International Humanitarian laws, the civilians killed have been, quote, caught in a crossfire of hamass making. You can watch more exclusive interviews on meet the press with Kristen Welker every sunday morning at eight. Well, new at five. Russia will soon have a new defense minister. Russian president Vladimir Putin has proposed appointing Andrei Belousov as the countrys defense minister. Right now, hes serving as russias first deputy prime minister. The reshuffle comes as ukrainian officials said today thousands more civilians have fled russias renewed ground attack in northeastern ukraine. The intense battles have forced at least one ukrainian unit to withdraw in the kharkiv region. We will continue our coverage out of ukraine as well as the middle east on nbc nightly news. That is coming up next at 530. Firefighters made quick work of a container fire just outside the port of oakland. Started around 330 this afternoon. Citizen app video right here showing a plume of black smoke put up by that fire at grand avenue. No word yet on how it may have started, but it is out now. Were waiting for more information from firefighters in downtown berkeley. Part of its bart station is shut down. The announcement went out this morning. Bart is beginning construction on the shattuck and center entrance. Not clear when it will reopen, but riders, they can still access the station through its four other entrances along shattuck avenue. A joyous day. Mothers day is here, and people around the bay area were out celebrating, showing their appreciation for mom or the mother figures in their lives. Thats right, nbc bay areas Christie Smith has a look at the special events and ways people marked this day. San franciscos iconic cable cars were the perfect backdrop in a city that was a popular place to spend mothers day. Right now, were at the post room here in the beacon grand hotel, formerly known as the sir Francis Drake hotel. Theyre hosting a beautiful mothers day brunch. That mothers day brunch was exactly what this mom hoped for. It was wonderful. Yeah, it was a great gift. And and. Yeah, a wonderful day. And now were going to the theater. There were plenty of festive options planned around union square. Really a really fun time here in the square. A number of restaurants participating and then a number of promotions. Mothers day is a super busy holiday for us, and weve been in full action since probably tuesday in burlingame. Florists were busy with people stopping to buy flowers to honor their mothers. I would definitely say the peonies and the lilac have been our most popular this year. Nearby, we caught up with diane and carly, a mom and daughter, out on a very special mothers day. We just are celebrating the profound gift of time with each other. My mom had open heart surgery over the summer, and you wouldnt believe it if you see her, but it just really, we feel really grateful to have this day together. I have two beautiful daughters that have helped me through a lot and im very grateful. Today around the bay, people found their own ways to spend quality time and show their love and appreciation. Christie smith, nbc, bay area news reporter. And on this mothers day, a unique celebration in the south bay, the college of adaptive arts marked mothers day and its 15th anniversary with a lowrider festival. This was at the mexican Heritage Plaza in san jose. The event featured a lowrider car bike show, performances from students, and of course, a whole lot of food. The college of adaptive arts is a nonprofit dedicated to giving adults with disabilities a college education. Unique i like it. Okay, up next, what were learning about a strong earthquake in mexico today. Also, a memorial paddle out to honor a san diego surfer who was killed abroad. The special tribute on the water. And a reminder tonight for drivers in the north bay. Westbound 37 remains closed tonight while the road is repaved, and that closure began friday between vallejo and sears point. The lanes are set to reopen on time tomorrow morning at five. You can always get the latest on road closures and more on our app and on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. And outside right now were watching the low clouds surge back into San Francisco, a cooler finish to the weekend before another warm up is ahead in that 7day forecast. Yesterday, family and friends of one of the men, callum robinson, gathered in san diego. Robinson was from australia but lived in san diego. Friends say the memorial was the best way to honor robinsons life. Oh man, he would love this. This is part of the reason we wanted to be here. This would be, like, right up his alley and exactly what he would want to be doing. After the memorial, dozens of people paddled out into the ocean to pay tribute to the surfers. A strong earthquake shook the border of mexico and guatemala early today and struck just before six this morning. Epicenter about 120 miles west of guatemala city, out in the pacific ocean, just offshore. Usgs says it was a magnitude 6. 4. The shaking drove frightened residents out into the streets. So far, it appears the damage is limited to small landslides and cracks in walls and roads. No deaths or major injuries reported. All right, lets take you live outside right now. This is a look over downtown san jose. Blue skies, sunshine. Rob mayeda here and rob. Yeah pretty nice outside. I had to crank up my ac in the car. Yeah. You know, we saw some areas cool down a little bit, but still 80s inland today. Overall temperatures still a little bit above average though. That ocean air conditioning is firing up right now. Thats going to bring in the low clouds and some drizzle as we head towards tomorrow morning. Youll see some of that again around San Francisco. But speaking of san jose, saw the view there. Heres the temperature 72 degrees. Its actually nine degrees cooler right now than the same time yesterday as that sea breeze picked up in the marine layer started to deepen up low clouds a bit higher and farther inland to start the day. Today, 80 degrees in walnut creek, just a few degrees cooler than the same time yesterday. Right now, looking at the sunshine in oakland at 62 degrees average highs, by the way, should be in the upper 60s. Not there with those strong onshore winds during the day. And theres a look at the fog right across the Golden Gate Bridge at chilly 56 degrees. Looks like a summer day right around the bay area. 70 and 80s inland, and those chilly 50s closer to San Francisco. So you see the 24 hour temperature change today and tomorrow likely to be the coolest days of the week, as we did see those numbers drop from the upper 80s yesterday. Inland. Now into the lower 80s around contra costa and out towards solano county. Comfortable 70s around san jose should be a nice evening, despite the fact weve got that chilly breeze around San Francisco bringing in the low clouds there on the coast as we move forward, we will begin to see low clouds surging back across the bay, filling in through the santa clara valley, out towards the trivalley and carquinez strait. As we head towards tomorrow morning. So lots of low clouds. What does that mean for aurora viewing . Now lets talk about what happened last night and compare it to friday night. Those are the levels friday night, cape 7 to 9. Thats what you need for bay area viewing. And look what happened last night. Numbers coming down all the way into this morning as were sort of in between these peaks of energy reaching the earths upper atmosphere. Now, the official forecast still has the potential of getting up to that g4 strength. But what that means is the best viewing for the aurora tonight will likely stay north of northern california. Pacific northwest might see some of that, too, unless that number climbs to eight, perhaps we could get a viewing farther south. So stay tuned. We will update this very forecast coming up tonight at 11 to see if any of that viewing gets a little bit closer to the bay area now, temperature wise tomorrow morning. Not too bad. Low 50s outside, a lot of low clouds. Some drizzle might get those windshield wipers going for the morning commute. By the afternoon numbers in the 60s to mostly 70s inland. Monday likely to be the coolest day of the week. Then, as we move forward, tuesday, wednesday and thursday back into the mid and maybe some upper 80s inland for the inland east bay, 82 degrees in san jose and you see more 60s and 70s. Not much change from tuesday through thursday as High Pressure keeps the jet stream and that cooler air off to the north. No big changes as we go through the week and into next weekend. Just a slight cooling trend setting up as we head towards next saturday and sunday. Warmest days of the week. This has got to be about the third week in a row. We get the warmest temperatures right there wednesday and thursday, and then we start to cool down as we approach the weekend. But were in Cruise Control mode of some pretty nice weather, good sea breeze, keeping the air quality pretty good and preventing any real heat inland from setting up over the next seven days. All right, rob, thank you. Sure. Up next, a possible shortage for a spicy favorite. This will disturb a lot of people. Why, sir, matcha could be hard to come by this summer. Well tell you about it. One of the films being shown at caamfest is about the almost lost story of george lee, an audience at the roxy theater in the mission got to hear the story of lee, a child prodigy, a chinese refugee and dance pioneer who had an amazing break with George Balanchines the nutcracker. Lees story was mostly unknown until director jennifer lin found his photos in the archive of the New York Public Library for performing arts. She tracked him down in las vegas, of all places. The 88 year old had been a blackjack dealer there for decades. Lin worked with bay area based john funehiki to put this film about lee together, as they discovered his incredible back story as a son of polish and chinese parents who fled to the philippines as refugees during the chinese revolution. Before his career as a dancer, and likely the first with the new york city ballet. He got rave reviews from the critics, from his fellow dancers. They said he could do things that nobody else could do, that he could jump higher, that his technique was absolutely incredible. Ten times better than the rest, then thats actually what the film is called, because lee says thats what his mother told him before he came to the u. S. That he needed to be ten times better. Well, the flips, acrobatics and eccentric costumes are making a return to the south bay cirque du soleil. Lay back in san jose for the First Time Since 2019. This production is called kooza. Cirque du soleil says kooza is about an endearing yet naive clown searching for a place to fit in. There are hundreds of costumes in the show, and theyre not your average costume, as you can see. Designers tell us that making these costumes requires special stitches to accommodate the stunts performed while wearing them. We need to take into consideration their acrobatic performance and security first. Thats the main concern, and thats my main concern when i design.
