A household doubles your chances of facing an eviction. We speak to one of the studys coauthors about the daunting challenges facing families and the impact on children. Plus, were buying more clothes and more of it is ending up in the trash. Its about one garbage truck, a second we explore thrifting as a sustainable shopping solution. But first, from basketball to tennis to gymnastics, it has been a record breaking year for women in sports, i challenge everyone out there to put their money where womens sports is growing, so if you know that its trending upward, why not . Its Good Business. I talked to sports journalist ari chambers about the surge in interest and how to translate that interest into financial support. Now, on matter of fact. Womens sports is having a moment. Several female athletes have made history this year, and people tuned in to see them. 3. 4 Million Viewers watch coco gauff win the us open. Last month it was the most viewed major womens tennis championship ever, beating this years mens championship by 1 Million Viewers and its not just at the pro level. The Womens College Basketball Championship held nearly 10 Million Viewers from start to finish, the most in history. But progress seems to be stalling. Beyond the ratings, theres a lack of investment in womens athletic programs, which makes it difficult to Fund Scholarships or fairly compensate coaches. Ari chambers is a sports journalist. Shes also the founder of highlighther, a section of the Bleacher Report thats dedicated to womens sports. Its so nice to have you. I am so happy to be sitting across from you. Thank you so much. And likewise so you think about simone biles, 23rd gold in in a championship, breanna stewart, Womens Basketball scoring record, retirement of megan rapinoe, 50 see now one years of title nine. The list goes on and on and on. All amazing news. Whats missing . You know, i think that its the framework of womens sports being the trend and being having a moment because its the norm. Now, you mentioned 50 years on title 9 or 51 years now we are coming up on a generation that is really reaping the benefits of title nine. Has the wnba in itself. Its past 25 years. Its the longest standing womens Pro Sports League in the united states. So you have a generation that didnt have to live without it. So we see women in these high places and when you grow up with that, there is no choice but to just know that you can do it. And so whats missing is peoples perspectives. So people who have the ability to invest, who have the tenure in the game, knowing that womens sports is here to stay and its not a charity, its something that people enjoy consuming as a product. And we need to reframe that thinking. How do you improve that financial piece of it . The financial support, the pay for coaches, the scholarship money . When does that come . Womens sports have been able to thrive despite not having it. Just imagine equitable and equal investment in that. And so just what i always tell people that the cost of inaction is greater than the risk. So though year over year, the investment in womens sports is up, theres still just severely underinvested in. And so i challenge i challenge everyone out there to put their money where womens sports is growing. So if you know that its trending upward and why not . Its a Good Business model to follow because the visibility is there. Its becoming the norm. I dont see it going back. And a lot of sports right, is about the back story. Like the characters, who are they . Where do they come from . Whats their story . Coco gauff story. I dont even really watch that much tennis. My husband does, but i love that girl. Athletes are now able to not be dependent, fully dependent on bigger Media Outlets and organizations. They have social media. The power of social media is so strong i cannot stress that enough. The athlete has the agency over themselves to tell the story in the way that they want to be told and display themselves as they want to be displayed. And so where us as media have been trying to protect them, whatever that means, or silence them, they can put it online and it can go viral. And so there are so many different facets to get your personality out there. And i like to say, if you find a player that you love, latch on to them, follow their game. And thats how the game grows. Do you have a female athlete who is who is it for you . Whos the one Candace Parker what shes been able to do transcending generations is is astounding to me, transcending careers. Shes a broadcaster. Shes obviously a wnba champion. Wnba great. She is a mother. She is a great friend. And shes somebody that if you want to show that the limit doesnt exist, you look to her and what shes done to the next generation is have something to aspire to be. And so shout out to candace for being a superstar and just being able to withstand the test of time and show that your potential in this sport space cant be limited because of the lack of resources she has really pushed beyond what an athlete is. Between 2000 and 2014, the amount of clothing purchased per person increased by 60 . Thats being driven in part by fast fashion, which is mass produced at a low cost. And its taking a toll on the environment. The fashion industry is the second biggest consumer of water, and its responsible for up to 8 of Global Carbon emissions. Its also generating a lot of waste every year, more than 34 billion pounds of textiles are thrown out. In the us alone, one solution to address this growing problem is nothing new, but it is getting a fresh look. Our correspondent laura chavez traveled to washington, d. C. To talk with people about the future of fashion and consignment. There are a lot of things that i look for. This rack is like whats interesting me right now . Vo Meredith Fineman found her lifes passion for thrifting when she was 11. I enjoy the hunt of it. This is a suede jacket from the 80s from retro jackets to her vintage t shirt collection. She believes her life is best lived. If its second hand, theres nothing i havent bought resale at, and i always tell people yes, obviously i focus on the fashion portion, but theres almost nothing you cant get second hand. As the years passed, merediths closet grew and so did her awareness of the impact, the fashion industry has on the environment. Before, it used to be mostly about saving money, making money, finding fashionable and and high end items for less. When it comes to the climate portion and what i think about consignment is that its a tremendous tool. This gave meredith an idea she would create a space to elevate resale shopping, and she could help others learn to consign too. And so began secondhand society. Hi friend. Hows the closet cleanout going . It helps people like crystal patterson. Shes the president of a Public Affairs firm in washington, d. C. It must have been 10 or 15 years ago. I saw a report that talked about how goodwill and places like that often get more clothes than they know what to do with. And so they will, you know, put it in a landfill or ship it overseas. And it was shocking to me. I think oftentimes people get overwhelmed because theyre like, im just one person. What difference can it make . And i understand that. But i do feel like as one person, this is one thing i can do. Im thinking about clothing. In the bigger scheme of things changed the way crystal approached her wardrobe. But even she will tell you her closet isnt totally green. If im being honest, i do still buy plenty of stuff new. So, you know, again, its mixing in, but every little bit helps. Fashion industry is very, very resource intensive, just the way it manufactures products, how it gives, you know, disseminates and sells products. Garima sharma is an assistant professor at the kogod school of business at american university. She studies fashions impact on the environment 2017 report. Actually found that over the last 15 years, the size of the industry has doubled. But our use of the clothing per piece has decreased by 40 . I think theres just this shift from seeing clothes as something that lasts you to seeing it as perishable good, like something in your refrigerator. What are we looking at for the next two decades . I think the industry will keep growing in its size. What is really ended happening is that all these clothes are reaching landfills. Theyre reaching, or either theyre getting incinerated. In fact, 87 of our fiber input throughout the process and end of life actually reaches the landfill, which is about eight. To give you an image, its about one garbage truck. A second sharma says solutions to the Environmental Impact of the clothing industry include consigning, repairing repurposing. And one of the largest and most important regulations on Companies Making these goods. That includes parameters on the amount of toxins used during the manufacture process or a carbon tax. This is a very complex problem. It can never be a Silver Bullet solution. I think it has to be a variety of solutions that Work Together. Meredith says shell Work Together with her clients. Whether consigning is a hobby, a need for money or a need for more affordable clothing. I deeply believe theres enough stuff, theres enough clothing, theres enough textiles that end one can have access to these garments for a future where fashion function and fairness collide. Welcome back to matter of fact, when you read the headlines about the rate of evictions in the united states, theres a reality hidden in the data young children, babies and toddlers under age five are the most at risk. Thats according to new research from princetons eviction lab and the census bureau. Each year between 2007 and 2016, nearly 3 million children and their families faced eviction. Of those, about 1. 5 million were evicted. Carl gershenson with princetons eviction lab is one of the studys coauthors. We found that a family with children had about a 10 chanc of facing an eviction each year. Thats compared to a 5 chance for a household without children. So just the presence of children in a household doubles your chances of facing an eviction. Shortly after she gave birth, Melissa Smith and her infant daughter were evicted. Smith had been unable to find affordable childcare and as a result, she lost her job and then her home just trying to make sure i wasnt out on the streets with my daughter, you know, to try do whatever i could to make sure she had a roof over her head. Smith was able to find help through a shelter in texas, including childcare. She honestly does have a little aggression on, i think, because of all the different change and not having all the words that she needs. There is Research Showing that children experiencing housing insecurity, for example, are also experiencing Food Insecurity. And when you look at the impacts that housing or Food Insecurity have on a child, theyre very similar profiles, right . You have increased risk of health problems. You have worse educational outcomes, more behavioral issues at school. So these households are i mean, theyre being doubly impacted when you dig into the numbers from this new report, further findings show a major disparity based on race, about 6 of white and latino children living in rented homes and apartment. S face the threat of eviction in a typical year. But for black children, that number rises to almost 27 . Another way of thinking about this is if you look at the life course, when ahn in your life, are you most likely to be removed from your home thanks to a Court Ordered eviction . Its when you are an infant or a toddler and that risk stays very high through your 18th birthday. The study is really a first of its kind legal filings and eviction cases name only the adults and lease holders. So the researchers linked the filings to detailed census data and this provided a more comprehen picture, including family size, age and race. It also revealed that while black americans make up less than 19 of all renters, they account for more than 50 of those affected by eviction filings. I think maybe what shocked us the most, the most of all was the fact that even in black households with high incomes were not protected from eviction risk, that a black household earning 80,000 a year still significantly higher eviction risk than white households earning under 20,000 a year. And it just really makes clear that, you know, the Structural Racism that underlies our rental market is so strong that income cannot protect certain families from losing their homes. The eviction lab says it hopes this more indepth look at evictions will spur policies designed to stabilize housing for families and children ahead, on matter of fact, it. They also say Global Warming has sped up 40 over the past 15 years. And as we know, hotter temperatures are fueling more intense natural disasters. Now theres a new tool that lets you see whether your neighborhood is at risk. Its called the climate vulnerability index. The Environmental Defense fund and texas a m university created this map. The analysis spans 70,000 census tracks. A tract is a subdivision of a county. It averages about 4000 residents. When you hover over parts of the map, you can see which areas are the most vulnerable to Climate Change. There are also details about heat, wildfire, smoke and drought. But the map goes beyond the immediate Climate Impact and explains why specific communities are so vulnerable. And thats based on factors like income, access to health care and transportation in ten of the countries most vulnerable counties are in the south. Half are in louisiana. The species has been around more than 100 million years and is now endangered due to overfishing and pollution.
