Quickly ramp up across the bay area. We are talking about the impacts and where well be the hottest. And the great california shakeout happening just within the last hour or so. The preparations we should all be taking to get ready for the next big earthquake. Good morning, and thanks for joining us. Im laura garcia. And im marcus washington. You know, usually we say did you feel it . This was after an earthquake, but today we are asking did you get the earthquake alert both of them . Only if you have the my shake app, waking up people in the middle of the night. 45 minutes ago the right practice alert went off. Ginger Conejero Saab is live for us at the bart station to get a better sense of what happened this morning. Marcus and laura, those two alerts that potentially millions of people in the bay area and people throughout california got this morning. The drills that have been happening or that happened on bart trains are all part of the great california shakeout. That happens every third thursday of october and its somewhat a california tradition and something we californians do to make sure that we are earthquake ready and that we are on a bart train when the drill happened. It was a little difficult to tell whether or not the train slowed down because of the drill or if it was going at a slow are pace because it was approaching the station and preparing to make a turn. Some people did not notice that the drill was happening, but the idea of it, they say could be beneficial when the next big one hits. You know, were in an enclosed, confined space on a train. I think it is because you just never know what can happen. I was in the loma prieta earthquake and that was quite a different beast altogether, but im glad theyre doing it here. The part of earthquake preparedness are alerts and if you are one of 10 million californians who have downloaded the my shake app, you may have gotten an unexpected alert at 3 19 this morning and that included a voice saying this is a test. That alert was supposed to be at 10 19 and it seems that time zones were mixed up and the alert was sent out seven hours earlier than expected. Heres the acknowledgement on the shake on the social media platform x. It reads you might have gotten a test from the my alert app today and we acknowledge no one wants to get a test alert this early and we are shaking with the tech alert partner to determine what happened. Before they tried to go back to sleep. The great california shakeout today happening just a day after a 4. 2 magnitude quake hit near the city in Sacramento County about 25 miles northeast of brentwood. It caused some shaking on the docks and rio vista, but overall no significant damage. The earthquake yesterday measured 4. 2 magnitude. People got alerts on their phones that said the magnitude was 5. 7 and concerning because thats quite a big difference and no real shake and possibly people were woken up recallier than expecteded and maybe they need a little bit of coffee now that its almost lunch. Ginger Conejero Saab, nbc bay area news. Welcome to our world, right, ginger getting up in the middle of the night. Welcome. Welcome. You can see the quake tracker every few minutes and also get tips on how to keep your family safe. Lets take a peek outside on this thursday morning and a little hazy from the shot in fremont and you know what else it will be, pretty warm across the bay area and summer is heading up in october, and we are also seeing those temperatures in much of the bay area in the 80s and 90s and the heat advisory continues until 11 00 p. M. When we see the temperatures headed into the low 90s in the coastline and it is hazy out there and impacts our air quality as it is a spare the air alert day. Now take a look at our temperatures and where we are currently. Wow, los gatos you are at 88 degrees and we have not made it to lunch yet. You need to slow down a little bit. Were in the low 80s in hayward and in the upper 70s for much of the north bay. When we compared the temperatures yesterday at this time we are running five to nine degrees above where we were yesterday and thats about what we will see going into the afternoon with numbers in the mid90s in the trivalley and San Francisco headed to 90 degrees and 95 degrees in santa rosa. Significant cooling coming our way for the weekend. So well talk more about that and also where we may see a little bit of rain before early next week. Ill have more on that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. Thank you. As kari was just saying those temps will be at their highest this afternoon and the cooldown right around the corner, but thats downright today could be dangerous. Nbc bay areas kris sanchez is joining us live from campbell and this is where people will be ready for the heat whether theyll enjoy it or not, kris. Theyre trying to make sure that they dont have to do their exercise later on today. We saw a lot of people out and about this morning. A lot of us told us that they had been minding the forecast and knew that it was going to be dangerously hot. We found quite a few little ones on the playground early and their parents knowing if they dont burn off that energy theyll be bouncing off the walls when they go outside and we found a few fourlegged friends out before the pavement is hot enough to burn their paws and we talked to quite a few grownups trying to get their exercise before its too hot later on and while most everyone doesnt enjoy the high heat its not a big surprise. I remember growing up it was always hot in october. I can remember it was always a hot month. I wanted to be here closer to 8 00 and im doing the best i can to get it in before the heat. It will be really hot today with the heat advisory and we got out here early. Its beautiful with the shade right now. It was hot last night, too. I was in shorts last night. Couldnt sleep . Yeah. Yeah. For the next few days youll want to use the air conditioner if you have it, if you dont, avoid direct sun light and take a cool shower or bath to get relief and dont count alcohol or caffeine as part of your hydration. If you have to go out make sure you wear breathable, lightcolored clothing and we will remind you of heat stroke and that is the lack of sweating and dry, hot, wet skin and dizziness and headache and vomiting and painting and if you see the symptoms for you and someone else and heat stroke is very, very serious. As part of your plan and beating the heat is to get yourself near the coastline and be aware that the ocean conditions are expected to be rough. We do expect dangerous surf and also rip tides. So if you head to the coast, make sure you keep the kid and the pets away from the water because those rip tides kind of come out of nowhere. In campbell, kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. You better find airconditioning. Keep cool out there, kris. Turning now to our crisis going on in israel. President biden going to speak to the nation this evening in the televised address at 5 00 p. M. And well bring you that live right here on air as well as online. In the meantime, 40 tons of supplies are headed to egypt now as the border to gaza opens. President biden helped crack that deal with egypt to get clean water, power and medical supplies to the war zone. You can see here part of the aid from the united states, armored trucks are being unloaded from a plane to help israeli troops. Biden has offered steadfast support to Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu, but president s visit was overshadowed by a dadly explosion at a gaza hospital on tuesday that has fueled protests across the middle east. Nbcs jay gray reports from tel aviv. It has been an intense day in gaza. The Israeli Defense forces saying that they have been involved in continuous attacks and hundreds of strikes over the last 24 hours. They say that theyve hit Missile Launch sites and operational structures and that ten leaders of hamas using their words, have been eliminated. We know that they are continuing to mount for a push on the ground. Theyre moving troops in and theyre training and theyve got equipment staged and today according to the reuters wire service, the Israeli Defense minister told troops on the ground there, quote, you see gaza now from a distance, you will soon see it from inside. Perhaps that ground assault that so many have been talking about over the last week or so is a bit closer to actually moving in. On the other end of the spectrum here and at the other end of gaza we are going to see perhaps some aid rolling in, something thats been desperately needed over the last few weeks. The president making the trip here and pushing for humanitarian aid to get to 2 million in gaza right now with no respect, and if it all works the way its been planned, trucks could begin to roll in tomorrow. 20 trucks filled with water, food and medicine to those who are in the middle of this fight right now. U. N. Officials say they are pleased with this change, but in reality they would need 100 trucks a day to fulfill the need on the ground in gaza. Thats the very latest this evening from tel aviv. Im jay gray. Back to you now. Jay, thank you very much. This just in. Governor gavin newsom is expected to travel to israel today. According to politico, he will meet victims of the war tomorrow. The governor originally was going to china next week, but he adjusted his travel plans to go to israel first. His office says california will also send aid. We are not sure what form that will come in or when it will arrive. Andta with us for continuing coverage. That includes president bidens address tt will be from the white house at 5 00 p. M. Pacific time. Dont forget, we will carry that live in a special report. Until then our website, nbc bay area. Com is being updated around the clock. One of the lawyers who loudly proclaimed donald trump had won the 2020 president ial election has pleaded guilty to conspiracy. Scott mcgrew, sydney powell was famous for saying that the trump team would release the crack en. It was widespread evidence of fraud and they never did release that, right . Powell was one of the lawyers who rocketed to notoriety after the election, making unfounded claims alongside jenaelis and Rudy Giuliani and alongside other defendants including donald trump of racketeering and conspiracy to commit election interference among other charges. This morning powell entered a guilty plea in an atlanta courtroom. How do you plead to the six counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with election duties . Guilty. Do you understand that you may have a limited right to appeal . Yes. Powells hard to see in this fixed camera. Shes center left of the defendants table. The prosecution dropped her racketeering charge and reduced other charges in exchange for the plea. Shell serve six years probation and agrees to testify against her fellow defendants and that would, of course, include donald trump. Trump here seen yesterday attending the civil trial against him accusing him of financial and real estate fraud in new york. Trump faces that civil case, four other criminal cases, the case in georgia involving sydney powell, a different criminal fraud case in new york, the documents case in florida and the election interference case in washington, d. C. More than 90 felony cases in all. The other case were watching, jim jordan of ohio appears to have given up on his run for speaker of the house at least for now. He was voted down by members of his own party twice and we were expecting a third vote today, instead jordan will endorse to make patrick mchenry, a full speaker with a limited term and that would allow the aid for israel, southern ukraine and the next possible government shut down. Mchenry said he doesnt want the job. Jordan is keeping his options open and possibly running for speaker in the future, but he lost more votes in the second round of voting than the first. The more his party thought about the idea the less they appeared to like. What else do we know about mchenry . Hes from north carolina. Yes. Hes been in the congress for about 20 years, a republican, but is not an election denier. He was previous the previous speakers choice to replace him. Interesting question, though, if they create this unusual new category with the full power of the speaker, but its going to end at some predetermined point, where does that put him in the president ial line of succession because the speaker of the house is behind the Vice President and in would be a speaker of the house with an asterisk. Right. Exactly. So we dont know. I dont think anybody knows. A lot of history to be made all of the time. Thank you, scott. Netflix users might be angry about this one. Prices increasing and when that happens if your plan is a part of the uptick, well tell you about whats happening next. Winter is coming even though it doesnt feel like it today, but the weather is changing and getting warmer later in the year, as well and there are other big changes. Coming up, we have Cinthia Pimentel telling us what we can expect in the months to come. Welcome back. New details about a shootout at San Franciscos embarcadero back in june. Less than an hour ago chief bill scott along with the District Attorney announcing the arrest of two men and a young person. That is because its all for a good cause. Today is spirit day and this is a day when we stand against bullying in the lgbtq community. All of us here in the nbc bay area wearing purple and you see the purple from the Transamerica Pyramid this morning and this is supporting lgbtq youth, bullying of any kind not tolerated and being, its lighting up the day and showing everybody how to go, but of course, all of us here standing against, not on our watch, as i like to say. Very much so. We had to dig for the short sleeve purple today. A spike in temperatures, but by the weekend well be putting the sweaters and the jackets back on. We will see a lot of changes here over the next couple of days and this will be the last day of the heat advisory and for tomorrow well have a drop in temperatures for some of us, maybe about 15 to almost 20 degrees lower than todays highs, and then by the end of the weekend, well start to see more clouds coming in and even some rain chances for parts of the bay area. Its also a spare the air alert day. So if you will be heading out and if you can bike or catch public transit, that will reduce the amount of pollutants in the air and looking at that particularate matter, some of the worst of it in the east bay and Santa Clara Valley and it is unhealthy for people with any kind of breathing problems or heart conditions and unhealthy for sensitive groups and you do want to make sure that youre limiting that time even as temperatures are really starting to heat up. I know when the weather gets warmer people want to head to the coast and enjoy a beach day, but keep in mind that even though the air temperatures in the 80s and 90s while the water temperature is still at 60 degrees and were seeing big breakers out there that could reach 17 to 22 feet. Thats going to be very dangerous and you dont want to turn your back to the water and watch children and pets and everyone around you to make sure everyone is staying safe. As far as our temperatures and where were headed for today were looking at low to mid90s that will tie or set records across the bay area and some of them set last year and well be seeing if we match or go above those numbers for this afternoon. San jose expected to head for 93 degrees and 99 today in gilroy. For some of our inland east bay, upper 90s. For antioch, reaching 95 and hayward headed to 92 degrees and hot temperatures for much of the peninsula, palo alto, 94 and upper 90s for San Francisco. The Mission District will be the warmest and reaching 95 in sonoma and 95 for santa rosa. More clouds and a couple of very weak storm systems coming in that could bring in some scattered rain and were looking for a slight chance of showers especially in the north bay and breezy winds and slightly cooler temperatures for next week as were seeing those highs that well reach into the 70s. So take a look at the 70s and were going in the upper 90s in the inland areas and even a chance of rain by sunday afternoon into early monday and for San Francisco, were watching those numbers closely. If we hit 90 degrees that will tie the record, but there will be a significant drop in temperatures by tomorrow and 60s for the weekend as you make those outdoor plans and for our climate in crisis, we turn it over to cynthia pimental. The National Atmospheric climate prediction certainty released their weather and before we get into it, i want to preface it by saying it is a longrage forecast and there is Science Behind the scenes that can shift it before winter season. Climate change is shifting what we think about winter. Thats according to noaa, its the fastest warming season by 3. 3 degrees since 1970 across the u. S. It could cause more extreme cold outbreaks and overall, the nation is seeing a decrease in snowfall becoming more of a mix of rain and ice. When a snowstorm does hit it can dump more snow in an area because of a warmer atmosphere that holds more moisture and more potential snow. With the warmer temperatures hanging on longer, it could also affect the time line for wildfire season. Another big one out west is that if temperatures remain warmer longer into the year and lets say we have precipitation not really kick in in the early winter, that means you could extend the wildfire season out west and that combined with temperatures warming up earlier and it means we might see less snow pack. The bottom line, Climate Change means we can no longer look to past winters to predict future winters.
