Massed at its border. Nowhere to go, hundreds of thousands of civilians trying to escape the violence, well hear from one father whose daughter and grandchildren are stuck inside gaza right now. Matter of fact, misinformation of the war is spreading fast online. Hello, everyone. Im kate snow. And im zinhle essamuah. Thanks for trusting us with your news this week. Lets get to the latest on the israel hamas more. Gearing up for a Ground Invasion of gaza after the hamas terrorist attacks over the weekend, tanks and troops have been seen moving toward the gaza border and israel continues to pound the gaza strip from the air. A strike and explosion of a building in gaza city the United Nations is warning of water and food shojs in gaza. Israel has cut off all supplies to the area since monday. More than 2700 people on both sides have been killed. Nearly 10,000 other people have been hurt. We begin with Josh Lederman in el avooef for us, israels military has been hinted a Ground Invasion for days. We heard today from the top spokesperson for the military saying theyre laying the ground work for a potential ground incursion, theyre putting in all the necessary efforts that they would need to have that ready, but he says israels political leaders havent yet given the final order for a ground incursion. On the other hand, we have heard from Prime Minister netanyahu saying the goal of israels military right now is to wipe hamas off the face of the earth. Difficult to see how israel would do that without conducting a ground incursion, and in terms of the timing for it, we dont have a loft information, weve seen israel amass more and more troops and tanks near the gaza strip, today secretary of state blinken was on the ground. Tomorrow defense secretary austin will be here, it seems unlikely that israel would launch a ground war while the u. S. Defense secretary is in the country, its not impossible, it seems like that would be unlikely but something in the coming days but not necessarily the coming hours. An interesting note there, josh, thank you. Secretary of state blinken met with israeli Prime Minister netanyahu today to discuss theon going war. That have meeting, secretary blinken sat down with our lester holt, asked him about iran and the 6 billion if oil money that was supposed to be unfrozen as part of prisoner swap with the u. S. Theres been great controversy over the 6 billion of irani money that was unfrozen recently the u. S. Has apparently now moved to stop the distribution of that money by qatar which was responsible, was that an acknowledgment that iran might have been involved in the attack in. Well, two things here, first, when it comes to iran and possible involvement, irans had a long relationship with hamas, hamas without being hamas without the support from iran. We know that and we see that. This specific attack, in this moment, we dont have direct evidence that iran was involved in the attack either in planning or carrying it out. That could change. Much longer complicity between iran and hamas that the war knows and its one of the reasons we sanctioned iran, individuals, companies, more than 400 times including support to hamas. Now when it comes to the 6 billion, its important to be very clear because unfortunately some people are misinformed or misinforming, the irani money, not american taxpayers money, money that was allowed to acued in a bank account from sell of oil, it was established by the trump administration, now, the account that was established in, in south korea, for technical reasons iran was having trouble actually using the funds, which it has been allowed to use for humanitarian crisis, food, medical, we moved the money from one account in south korea to another account in qatar where the money could be used under the supervision of Treasury Department and not a dollar of that money has been spent. We have the right to freeze that account. As i said, there has been no distribution of the account. There hasnt been any. You can see much more of lesters interview with secretary blinken tonight on nightly news. Families of americans stuck in gaza are pleading with the u. S. Both of the to help bring them home. Pictures of emily with her husband and five children, emily grew up here in the united states, she and her children are u. S. Citizens and her husband is palestinian and a british citizen, they all live in england normally day were visiting the husbands family gaza when the war erupted. Joining us now is emilys father, thank you so much for making time for being with us. Im sure this is a difficult time for you. Understand youre in florida, your daughter is over there with family, youre in contact with her. Thank you very much. I appreciate it immensely. Heartfelt youre drawing attention to their dilemma and challenges. They were getting ready to leave when this war broke out. Theyve had to move three homes. Their original familys farm, my soninlaws family has a 200acre olive tree farm and thats basically been destroyed by bombing along the border, where their 200acre farm is. Theyve had to move three subsequent times. Our frustration is, is when i heard from my daughter, we communicate via face time wherever theyre at, but we finally got through to state department, how do we evacuate, when i called back, we were told there are no plans to evacuate americans from gaza, youre on your own. That was from the state department . Thats from a state Department Person who answered the phone in washington, d. C. , 27 hours ago. How is that feeling for you, youre saying youve been in touch with the state department. Yes, i again, via a phone call, directed me to the website, registered them for evacuation, called them back and got through when they said they were on the own, i started to looking at other options and then they cut off and rightfully, im an israeli supporter, i understand whats going on, what hamas has done, they need to eradicate them but there are americans and other foreign nationals stuck in gaza how do we get out, theyre in the southern part of the country which isnt very large, 28 miles long, 3 to 5 miles wide. Egypt has communicated theyll take the refugees or the foreign nationals but israel wont let them out. That was the straw that broke the camel back. I reached out to media. That crossing into e yipt is not open right now, so what in this last minute we have, what would you like to happen, what are you praying for, hoping for . I understand weve got to evacuate americans and other foreign nationals out of actual israel to the north, im asking for the u. S. Government the state department to work and put the appropriate pressure on israel to give us 24, 36 humanitarian opening of the Border Crossing into egypt. Thats what im asking for and were fighting with the federal government, you got to get your case out there. My congressman has stepped up to the plate. What im trying to accomplish is, open that 24 to 36 hours the Border Crossing and ask israel to stop bombing that area. For all people who need to flee. Foreign nationals and most importantly obviously my hearts with my daughter and her five kids and my soninlaw. Our heart is with you and you, too, john, thank you so much for being with us. My appreciation for bringing attention to this. We talked about the Global Impact of this war, you saw the personal impact right there, theres also potentially an Economic Impact which economists are watching closely now. Global crude oil prices jumped 5 a barrel after the surprise terrorist attack over the weekend and have since retreated. Gas prices domestically are expected to drop as we head into winter. Could that change. Brian, we do know that from other global conflicts, the market does tend to get a bit turbulent when that happens. As you mentioned, economists are watching the implications on oil prices. This week we saw it spike on monday its since come back down because of the concerns that whats happening in israel could bubble into a larger middle east conflict, specifically if iran gets more directly involved, could that lead to a supply constraint where they close the strait of hormuz. Thats not happening right now. The concerns that if this escalates that could result in perhaps a constraint on gas which could lead to higher prices. Thats speculation. I was going to ask about gas, its something that consumers and our viewers care about, is there indication that its going to stay where it is, we got some new inflations as well. The current inflation numbers, prices werent inflating as they did in the month of september as they did in august. The past few weeks would not have been reflected in this report the decline at the pump. The shift from summer to winter mix. Helpful to prices going down at the end of this month. The average could fall to 3. 25. Compared to 3. 65. Things could change as the war changes. Brian, thank you so much. Lets turn to todays money minute. If you received Social Security youre soon going to be getting a raise. Netflix is planning big staffing changes. The inflation has moderated a little bit when it looks to headline number for Social Security beneficiaries. Much more modest cost of living increase in 2024 following this years historic 8. 7 boost. The Social Security administration announced the more than 71 million americans who will receive benefits will see a 3. 2 increase in the new year which comes out to an average about 50 more a month. The netflix animation unit is cutting jobs and shutting down two films that are in preproduction, restructuring effort looking for dreaming giant. Final cuts in the coming weeks. Disney announced that its raising prices at disneyland and disney world. Prices will rise between 4 and 16 for every ticket option. Except the cheapest tickets on offpeak days. It plans to double its investment in the parks division. So, that much more expensive to take your family. Bertha, thank you so much. Right now on capitol hill, House Republicans just finished huddling behind closed doors as they talk about electing a new speaker. Majority leader scalise has been nominate bd i the conference in a razorthin vote. Julie, i understand a multihour closed door meeting with republicans just wrapped up, where do things stand right now. Reporter exactly right. We still have month speaker and no path forward to a new House Speaker and thats because despite this threehour closed door meeting Steve Scalise wasnt able to pick up enough of those no holdouts. This is House Republican conference thats already been burned by many rounds of mccarthy back in january, they dont want this cha raid to unfold publicly on the floor. Right now, they broke up, i just got done trailing jim jordan the other candidate for speaker, he told me once again that hes throwing all of his support behind scalise, he told me that he will not jump back into the speakers race and this really is something for scalise to win because scalise was the speaker designee. Take a listen to Kevin Mccarthy its not an easy task. You got to listen to people. Time is of the essence. You think its possible that he can get the votes . Its possible. Reporter mccarthy himself behind closed doors last january was able to get well more than scalise had secured yesterday, remember, how split they were jordan and scalise, 14 votes apart in conference. Given all of that, when could we see a vote for speaker . If it doesnt work do they just keep going . Reporter sounds that way, members were told to keep their phones on them, theyre presumably want to come back today and eventually have that vote on the house floor, but guys theyre so far apart, every single meeting they have they get further and further apart and theyre not able to reconcile some of these differences. One member its not smoke that you see thats no speaker being elected. These members cant get on same page. That means a lot of critical work legislative work cant be done on the floor, either. You can see one of the volunteers right now outside the safeway here where they have been for the past few days. We know they are at other locations. In oakland this morning, this is where s. A. F. E. Was. They have 160 days to get the just over 73,000 signatures required to put this on the ballot. Critics accuse her of being anticop and soft on crime, especially since she cut back on sentencing enhancements. Some accuse her of being like a public defender, not a District Attorney. Shes trying to change the Justice System that she believes unfairly targets people of color. Says shes being unfairly targeted by this recall. Incidentally, the d. A. You might recall last month, speaking of oakland, that city could have received potentially millions of dollars in grant money from the state to fight the organized retail theft. But that city missed a deadline to submit an application. The city administrator says opd and Community Partners did put together an application but the citys economic and Workforce Development department failed to follow through and actually submit it. The city is looking at hiring someone to specifically handle those kind of grant applications. Bob redell, nbc bay area news. Bob, thanks. Turn now to our coverage of the israel hamas. Were closely watching israels military as it prepares for a potential Ground Invasion of gaza that could happen at any moment, israel continues to hammer the gaza strip with air strikes, drone videos show people searching for the rubble of a refugee camp in gaza city, israel said the siege wont end until all hostages taken by hamas are released. Ali velshi is on the ground in ashkelon for us. I understand you spoke with man whose mother is missing and is presumed to be held hostage right now, tell us about that conversation. Reporter there are about 150 people who are missing and believed to be hostages, the Israeli Government has told the families of 97 of those people that they know those people were taken by hamas. Thats the language theyre using. Maybe through video and surveillance and testimony they can establish that 97 people have been taken away. This mans mother whos 74 years old from canada, she lived on a kibbutz here, shes not been confirmed as hostage, the home in the kibbutz yesterday, her body isnt there, so theyre hopeful. I asked the man about this. One thing thats notable about her she was a peace activist, she was working on peace and resill yags between israelis and palestinians. Shes an ally to the Palestinian People and she dedicated her whole life, her whole adult life to peace and justice, to end the occupation and find a solution to the Israeli Palestinian conflict. But it doesnt really matter in times of war. War is blind. Reporter hes hoping that its the darkest before the dawn and a dawn will come. He also hopes for a negotiated release to the hostages and hoping it doesnt have to be a ground incursion of israelis into gaza. Ali, what is it like there right now . Reporter ashkelon has been target of lot of attacks, when we got here there were definitely some interceptions by the iron dome, its been quiet on this side for a while, no launches from gaza but were hearing a lot of thuds on the gaza side. You can hear the difference between a rocket attack and an interception and a deep thud thats hit gaza. All right, ali velshi for us. Thank you. As this war rages on, people around the world are turning to social media for up to minute updates. A critical source for gathering and disseminating information. Also full of post and pictures that are simply not true or real. Today we want to dig into how you spot disinformation. Joining us is jake ward. If youre feeling at all overwhelmed the way i am by the amount of misinformation out there right now, right to sort it all through youre not alone, even 15 year experts in information are feeling entirely overwhelmed. Have a listen. Every time we have a new conflict, weve got new platforms but right now i think the challenge weve never had this many platforms in such a confusing situation to be totally honest, platforms who arent up to the job, theyre not able to do the necessary work. Reporter there has been so much difficulty on the part of platforms to get in front of this. The eu is now starting to step in in an enforcement role, they have been given platforms meta and tiktok get this misinformation solved. Theyve zeroed in on x, they turn to turn over information to the eu about how theyre patrolling and policing this information, violent content and demanding they turn that over within the next few days. So were just seeing its just an absolute mess across social media at the moment. Is there anything individuals like us can we do about it, able to discern whats real around whats not. Important to point out that social media is in fact an incredibly useful way with whats keeping up. Social media is going to be peoples only source of it. You have to ask yourself as you see this stuff is this source a reliable one, from a acredited news source . Do i know enough to pass it along, do i feel qualified and in control of, in command to pass this along. This is the subtle one, you guys, if it tickles your funny bones inflames a bit of rage in you, touches your emotions, in some way confirming your worst assumptions that perhaps suggests that youre getting sucked in by it instead of looking at it clearly. Do i know enough to share it . You dont have to share blindly. Theres a growing humanitarian crisis in gaza, as a result of the israel hamas war. Reports of food and water shortages. At least 340,000 People Living in gaza have been displaced according to the u. N. Hala, thank you so much for being with us. Can you describe what life was like for People Living if gaza even before this war began . For years, the gaza strip has been blockaded since 2007, the year after hamas took control of that tiny sliver of land and for many years there have been shortages in fuel, water, israel of course as the world has learned control the supplies of utilities to the gaza strip. 80 Poverty Level by some accounts. 45 unemployment, half of the 2 millionplus people who live in gaza strip are children or teenager, so people now having to endure yet another round of bombings, are suffering after years of misery, really, feeling blockaded and feeling like they cant, you know, move freely, certainly leaving the gaza strip if youre a palestinian, not a holder of another passport is virtually impossible. There have been conflicts in israel this past, this is the worst one to date. There have been bombardments and open conflicts between israel and hamas. Israel has been clear saying this war is not with the Palestinian People, it is with hamas, but i think we could use some context, help our viewers understand how hamas operates within gaza, my understanding is theres not a lot of separation between hamas fighters and civilians. No its so densely populated. Of course, israelis would argue that hamas hides its ammunitions, armaments within civilian populations, when they target hamas installations inevitably it could lead to the loss of civilian life. Hamas came into being out of the ashes of the first palestinian uprising. This group won an election in 2006,le confrontation with fatah, and thats when they took over. When israel and egypt by the way, also blockades the southern part of the gaza strip. Israels rational for the blockad the land, the air and sea blockade to prevent hamas from rearming but what we have seen with this attack that hasnt worked. A question in the future whether or not there are some reevaluation of how to approach that particular problem. Hala, i want to ask you, israels military is moving troops to the border with lebanon, thats are hezbollah is base zbld my inclination right now, its not likely for two reasons, i know were running out of time. First of all, i dont think hezbollah wants the opening of a second front. Indication that, were still here but were not joining the fight with hamas. Secondly, i think this has been underreported the crown prince of saudi arabia, and the iranian president had 45minute phone call yesterday the first since march, these are the two forces, iran funds and supports hamas and other groups. So if those two are getting together and talking about potential solutions for the deescalation, i think potentially iran wont push hezbollah into this conflict, therefore there wont be a second front opening. But it could always happen. Time will tell. Thank you so much for your time and reporting. Sraeli Ground Invasion could be coming. Coming up, our military expert explaining the challenges that theyll face and the my name is caron and im from brooklyn. I work for the city of new york as a police administrator. I oversee approximately 20 people and my memory just has to be sharp. I always hear people say, you know, when you get older, you know, people lose memory. I didnt want to be that person. I decided to give prevagen a try. My memory became much sharper. I remembered more ive been taking prevagen for four years now. Prevagen. At stores everywhere without a prescription. Volunteers in israel are working overtime to get help to those who need it as quickly as possible. Here in tel aviv theyre packing food and supplies to send to israeli soldiers. A family from southern california, safely back in the united states, they were in israel for a vacation when the hamas attacks began. All seven family members forced to seek shelter in jerusalem. Ted chen from our station in los angeles spoke to them about their frightening ordeal. Reporter hearing sirens in jerusalem was an unexpected part of the family vacation, the parents and their five children got back home safely at l. A. X. But theyll never forget the sound that woke them up saturday morning and sent them all to a shelter. We all had to run to the bunkers and it was a little scary. I ran upstairs to check on my family. Cowering in a bomb shelter is a pretty striking experience. Reporter the family sang songs in the shelter to keep the children from being too frightened. Israels iron dome Defense System was protecting jerusalem from rockets being fired. Rockets overhead, we could hear the boom and we could see the impact of the iron dome. I thought that, are we safe . Are regoing to be okay . My parents said were going to be okay. Reporter they made care packages for israeli troops. The family said they may be home but their thoughts are with israel. Pray for the hostages and the captives and the citizens, little girls, innocent women. Israeli troops with heavy weapons as we mention ready heading toward israels southern border ahead of a expected ground offensive in gaza. Joining us now is clinton watts. What would a ground attack look like in the heavily populate gaza strip. Israel clearing their own side of the border creating a secure border, where they can redeploy troops, over the last 24 hours, theyve made a militarized zone, moving people out of the way, so they can set up essentially any sort of offensive operations. When you look at the big picture in terms of gaza lays out, broken in the four sections, staging here, but notice that there are gates here and there, this gate right here known for the humanitarian corridor and moving people across. Weve mentioned a couple of times in this hour that fol rx sort of stuck, what are some of the humanitarian implications for civilians in gaza . The Current Situation is really not good in the sense there are four border walls that you see set up and breaks up these zones separately when you look in items of the hospitals theyre spread across these zones and theyre unevenly laid out, down here in humanitarian areas, these shipments back and forth to egypt, lot of refugees already moving this way that are displaced. The other part is looking at where those refugee camps are and spread out. We expect them to move toward this egyptian border area down here. When were looking at the larger scene, iran, saudi arabia, having to call, trying to maybe deescalate tension, diplomacy, who might be able to take on these refugees, get them out of this area before a large airport in that area you circled, is that active. Its not active, its just there for humanitarian aircraft that might come in at some point. They could land there potentially. But the big question is, if everyone moves south toward egypt will they join in to help . Clint watts, thank you. Theres much more news ahead. Youre watching nbc news daily.
