Good evening. We begin with breaking news. A woman rushed to the hospital with lifethreatening injuries after being hit by a driverless car. It happened at 5th and market in San Francisco near the powell street bart station. This was one of the cruise cars that are in use across the city. Nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney arrived there within the last 30 minutes. Terry, what do you know at this point . Reporter well, im on 5th street just south of market, not even half a block south of market street, and that vehicle you see right there with the emergency flashers on, that is the driverless cruise car at the center of this story. San Francisco Fire Department tells me about 9 30 tonight they received a call of a person trapped underneath a vehicle. They come out here and they see this vehicle and underneath the rear tire was a woman. They had to use jaws of life to lift the vehicle to get her out of there. She is in very bad shape. Critical condition it would appear taken to San Francisco General Hospital. Now, listen to what the Fire Department told me about the very eerie scene they found when they got out here. Listen to this. Because of the nature of the autonomous vehicle, theres no driver to speak with. And in this case there were no passengers inside the vehicle when rescuers arrived. There were also no witnesses on the street. All we know is that the victim was found beneath the vehicle and rescued. Reporter let me say again she is in critical condition. And again, no driver, no passenger, and they werent able to get much in the way of anything from this woman. She was hurting very, very badly. I can tell you a couple other things. One is that this woman was nowhere near a crosswalk. How that plays into it i dont know. And the Fire Department is saying that they are not aware of any surveillance cameras around here that were pointed in that direction that might be able to provide a story should this woman not be able to provide a story in the future. But again, this woman was run over by a driverless cruise vehicle tonight about 9 30, taken to San Francisco General Hospital in very bad shape. And theres no physical witnesses out here. They were surprised. Its usually a lot of people out here. But tonight there were no witnesses to the crash, and theyre not aware of any. There may be but theyre not aware of any surveillance cameras in the immediate area. Back to you. Hey, terry, the stories weve done with cruise and waymo in San Francisco, usually when theres a problem like this the cruise officials come out and check in on the car. That car looks pretty barren behind you. Have any of the cruise employees come out yet . Reporter they absolutely did. In fact, a very good point. San francisco fire says that immediately the cruise officials were out here and they are cooperating fully with this investigation. Okay. Thats good to know because there will be a lot of questions and hopefully some answers as this all develops. Terry mcsweeney live in the city for us. Thank you, terry. Also this evening, dont let your guard down. Two fires in the east bay had a lot of people nervous. Flames racing through brush and closing in on homes. At least one home was damaged. And its certainly a reminder that were not in the clear when it comes to fire season. Nbc bay areas pete suratos shes us what happened. Reporter scary moments for residents along outlook avenue in oakland as a twoacre fire burned along the empty hillside behind several homes. When i got out there was smoke everywhere. I was coming up the street and i saw the smoke. And i knew, you know, this is my home here. Reporter oakland fire crews were able to extinguish this fire quickly, but flames did reach the attic of this home. Fred barcello is the homeowner and says his typical lunchtime routine took a drastic turn. I was just finishing lunch and i look out the window, expecting to see blue skies and all this, and all i saw was brown. Reporter neighbors have been concerned about this hillside for a while. Fred says the weeds are out of control and ironically the Property Owner finally cut them today. Oakland fire says the cause of the fire is under investigation but confirmed that crews were clearing out brush on the hill side prior to the fire. Thats why it was such a fire, because the weeds had grown so high. Reporter all of this taking place as flames burned along a hillside in martinez. It had both firefighters and neighbors scrambling as flames came close to the homes there. The fire burning three acres before crews could put it out. Tonight Contra Costa County fire Officials Say this fire is also under investigation. As for fred, hes relocated to a hotel. Due to water damage in his home. And Officials Say this is the time of year to stay prepared when it comes to fire conditions. September, october, and sometimes even into early november can be some of our most dangerous times as we know in our history. So its definitely not the time to let our guard down. Reporter in the east bay pete suratos, nbc bay area news. Thank you, pete. We heard the firefighter say it right now, jeff, that october, these months can be the most hazardous. Weve had a mild fire season so far, but we shouldnt underestimate the power of those potential fires. Thats certainly right. Were in the period here, the longest period without any kind of heavy widespread rain. So the brush is going to be at its driest point here, especially through october and november. So we really like to get some rainfall in here. But its not going to happen this week. We have this large area of High Pressure moving the storm track way off to the north. So again, it is going to be dry. Warm weather, also a little wind. Through the day tomorrow im not seeing any big wind but by late tomorrow night around 11 30 well start to get in on some gusts here in the mountains around napa. 10 to about 20 miles pr hour. Then well see a quick burst of wind, early wednesday morning around napa, calistoga, also healdsburg. The mountains around those areas 15 to about 35. Then it would calm down wednesday afternoon. So again a quick burst of wind wednesday morning. Temperatures also warming up, not quite 100s by a long shot here, but well be into some mid 80s tomorrow afternoon inland and some low humidity, 20 to 30 . Again, were on a good path so far on the fire season. 305,000 acres burned in california. Last year it was 288 to date. And our average is 1. 36 million. So way below the average. Crime scene tape at the concord bart station. Surveillance video is being reviewed this evening after reports of a stabbing right in front of the station. Happened right before 7 30. A bart spokesperson tells us the victim was taken to the hospital and that a possible suspect is in custody. Shortly after that happened trains were not stopping at the station, but service is back to normal. Tomorrow history will be made on capitol hill. Laphonza butler will be sworn in as our new senator, replacing dianne feinstein, who died last week. Butler will be the third black woman to serve in the u. S. Senate and the first lesbian. Tonight Governor Newsom is answering questions about his appointment as Memorial Services for senator feinstein are being finalized in San Francisco. Governor newsoms appointment of Laphonza Butler is not only historic but also controversial. Shes never held public office. But the governor says her work in Community Organizing and Public Policy makes her more than qualified for the u. S. Senate. Perhaps the most important quality ive personally seen with great leaders versus leaders, and that is the ability to create a dynamic on the outside that moves the needle on the inside. Few people as skilled as Laphonza Butler to understand that pushpull. The 44yearold butler has been a political consultant and was an adviser to Kamala Harris when she ran for president in 2020. For the last three years she served as president of emilys list. Thats a superpac in washington, d. C. Dedicated to electing women who advocate for abortion rights. Today the governor was asked about her residency in maryland. Critics note shes not even registered to vote here in california. Still has a house out here and reregistered. And we were transparent about that and put that forward. Reporter according to the california secretary of state, by maintaining her home in Southern California butler meets the qualification. Butler says she will reregister in california. The former u. C. Regent will be sworn into the senate tomorrow by Vice President harris. As thats happening in washington, d. C. , the public viewing of senator feinstein will be happening in San Francisco. Her remains were flown to the city over the weekend. Feinstein will lie in state at city hall wednesday from 9 00 a. M. To 7 00 p. M. The public is invited. The public is now also welcome to attend senator feinsteins funeral on thursday afternoon on the steps of city hall. Inside city hall today a set of books on the fourth floor for people to write notes of condolences. She was such a fantastic person and a great leader for us. She really was. She did a lot for our city. So its a lot happening on wednesday and thursday. We mentioned wednesday you can view her in state there at city hall. Then on thursday that public memorial begins at 1 00 p. M. You cannot make it in person, it will be streamed live online. Tragedy in the south bay. Tonight the investigation is under way after two children drowned at a Daycare Center in south san jose. A third child was hospitalized. The drownings occurred this morning at the happy happy daycare, which operates out of a home on fleetwood drive. This isnt far from almaden lake park. Many Unanswered Questions tonight, though, including how those children ended up in the pool. Was there a locked gate or a pool cover . Now, we did see officers carrying other children out of that home and handing them over to their parents. Oh, its really tragic. I mean, ive been shook up all day. I literally live right across the street, so i see them being dropped off every day and picked up. Its just it wrecks my heart. Its so sad. I just cant imagine. Those kids, weve seen them. You know. And the parents. Police have not released any information on the children or their identities. The d. A. s office is now trying to determine if this deadly accident is also a crime. One of those questions still unanswered is whether this facility actually even had a current license to operate as a child care center. A search by our Investigative Unit did not find any license issued for a daycare pertaining to this address. We have new details tonight about the san jose man accused of killing his mother with fentanyl. For a second time he has refused to enter the courtroom to hear the charges against him. Bradley dexter stood in the hallway today as he was charged with murder, poisoning and two counts of elder abuse. He was supposed to be arraigned last week but refused to leave his jail cell. Prosecutors say back in june dexter admitted to lacing a drink with fentanyl that he gave to his 72yearold mother. Hes also accused of attacking his father with a metal baton. Dexter is expected back in court next month. Another development now in that highprofile murder case in San Francisco. Bail was denied again for the man accused of killing San Francisco tech executive bob lee. Defense attorneys for nima momeni made that request today but a judge said no for the second time. Momeni will remain in custody. Hes charged with fatally stabbing bob lee. This morning the judge was expected to set a trial date but that has been rescheduled until october 25th. New at 11 00 tonight the sign says it all. That santa clara Safeway Store closing for good. After serving shoppers at that location in the Valley Fair Shopping Center for 67 years. A spokesperson for the chain says the chain isnt doing well financially, so it will close that store permanently over next month. The move comes after safeways new San Francisco Fishermans Wharf and north beach also closed back in may for similar reasons. Employees have the option to work at other safeways in the city or santa clara county. No word yet on what business if any will take over that property. Ayuda reporter the Surveillance Footage shows them scrambling after driving to what they thought was a hospital. Seconds later San Pablo Police officer Brandon Oswald arrives on scene. And immediately steps into action. Mom was frantic. She was screaming. She was crying. She was, you know, kind of holding baby in like a against her chest. Reporter body camera footage shows oswald giving the 1 weekold baby girl back blows. And suddenly there we go. In this situation it is the greatest sound that i could have heard in the moment. Because i know, like i said, when the babys crying babys breathing. Reporter a huge sense of relief for the family of baby saret varrera. And officer oswald a new father and a hero. Officer oswalds actions prevented a tragedy for the family involved 378 pp. Reporter on monday he was honored way lifesaving award during the San Pablo City Council Meeting where city leaders took the time to thank him. Well, san jose is running out of options to house the thousands of Homeless People living and dying on city streets. Some city leaders are now calling for an official shelter crisis. When the pandemic was declared over, covid funding went away along with many housing projects. Today mayor matt mahan and city leaders say they hope another Emergency Declaration from the city council will heft fasttrack more housing projects. Advocates say some house projects like converting old hotels into shelters have tripled in cost due to unrealistic requirements. Were spending well over 65,000 per person per year just managing these encampments. I believe were going to get more help and more is coming. Take advantage of it. Take advantage of it.
