Escape the nevada desert while others are prepared to stay for days. Good evening. More rain came down in blackrock city today. Thats where tens of thousands of people are quite literally stuck in the mud at burning ground. The mud making it impossible for people to drive out and now many are forced to shelter in place. Taking a live look at the festival. You can see a lot of people still there, wandering around. Its far less than you would normally see on a sunday night during this event. We continue to follow the situation unfolding in the nevada desert closely. Tonight the white house says President Biden was briefed on what is happening at burning man. Nearly 70,000 people are stuck in muddy campgrounds. The camp is located in the nevada desert, northeast of reno. Attendees have been told to shelter in place and conserve food and water since friday. Late last night we learned one person died at the event. Its not clear how or if its weatherrelated. So far no other major injuries are reported. Despite being told to shelter in place, many people spent the day packing. Those who have fourwheel drive vehicles are trying to drive out while others try to walk five miles in the deep mud to reach the road. I our photo journalist is there and spoke with one socalled burner who has been going to the festival for year. Who says his camp is trying to leave but has pleasant of resources if they cant get to the main road. Fortunately, were in a camp where we have plenty of resources and water and food and shelter. Were doing well. It makes me nervous to think about other people who dont have all those resources. And theyre probably struggling. I think theres a lot of them. Other festival goers are planning to stay put for the next few days, waiting for the ground to dry out. We had an emergency internet connection. People have changed flights and stuff. You know, speak to their loved ones. No real emergencies, so were plugging along. Organizers say theyre monitoring the situation and are asking people to stay calm. They also say they hope to burn the man later tonight if the weather holds up. Nbcs climate reporter chase kane is also at burning man. He was there with friends helping them convert their camp to solar power. He posted this update on social media about an hour ago. The mood remains relatively calm and pleasant here at burning man despite the circumstances. There are camps which have resources and folks are just trying to make the best of the situation. But then there are individuals in camps running short or out of things like food and water. So, they are getting desperate to leave and attempting to drive on these makeshift roads even though they remain closed. Because this dust is sort of like quicksand and that turns to a type of clay, a number of vehicles have gotten stuck. You may be able to see one off here in the distance. As of late sunday, the gates in and out do remain closed, so theyre asking people to just stay in place. Muddy, indeed. Lets give you some perspective on how big blackrock city is. The city is a series of semicircles. From the inner most street, this one right here, its called the esplanade, to the man is 2500 feet, just half a mile. Walking across the whole open area is almost a mile. Now, if your camp is on one of those outer streets, say, maybe down here, you may be caulking upwards of a mile to get to the outer edge. What about people who are choosing to walk out . Its 23 miles from blackrock city all the way to girlock. Thats where people are headed to, to take a bus to reno. Weve heard people getting a ride with someone they know or hitchhiking. That is what happened to dj diplo.
