Now, hoping to avoid the biggest strike in more than a decade. Thousands of workers could stop working if a deal isnt made. Good morning to you. Thanks for joining us for our midday newscast. Im marcus washington. Im laura garcia. That strike was suspended by Union Leaders yesterday as negotiations continue. Nbc bay areas kris sanchez is outside of San Jose City hall as leaders are meeting. Whats the latest, kris . Reporter well, we saw San Jose City workers showing up for work today as scheduled instead of going onto the picket lines because of that agreement that appears to be close between what the city wants and what the union wants. The San Jose City council went into closed session just after 9 30 this morning to consider that agreement. No one signed up for public comment, so i think everyone is playing it pretty close to the vest. City negotiators and Union Leadership were close enough to put a 24hour pause on the threeday planned strike which was, as you said, supposed to begin at 6 00 this morning. At this point the details of the deal are not public, but we know in terms of salary increases in the next three years, the city and the unions were about 6 apart. In order for this deal to move forward, at least Six Council Members have to vote to accept it, then it goes back to the union for final approval. The last word was at the union was optimistic. Mayor matt mahan said he would not be in favor of any increases that would result in service cuts. For now, some 4,500 workers are back at work as scheduled at the permit office here at city hall, libraries, animal shelter, the Wastewater Treatment facility. Picketing outside the San Jose Police department is also on hold. We expect we may get more details about this deal during the open session of the city council meeting, which starts at 1 30. Up until now, we havent heard anything. Everybody has been pretty mum on the situation. Our colleague, marianne favro, will have an update in the afternoon and evening newscasts. Kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. Well continue to follow it. Also today, former President Trump indicted for fourth time, this time by the state of georgia. That charge that trump and his Team Coordinated attempts to unlawfully alter the georgia election. The sprawling 98page indictment names trump and 18 others. Scott mcgrew joins us now. Donald trump has an unexpected reaction to this latest indictment. Very unexpected. He says hes going to have a Big Press Conference this coming monday proving to america the election was rigged. That would be two years nine months 18 days after the election concluded. He posted that to his truth social this morning and says the blockbuster evidence hes bonn holding on to that the election was rigged will exonerate him. Now, the election was not rigged, and legally irrelevant. Prosecutors have pointed out several times, it is trumps First Amendment right to claim the election was rigged. Its his right to take it to court. What he couldnt do is commit crimes trying to prove it or to undo it. Heres the prosecutor in georgia. Specifically, the participants in association took various actions in georgia and elsewhere to block the counting of the votes of the president ial electors who were certified as the winners of georgias 2020 general election. The indictment names 18 others, including former trump attorneys rudy giuliani, sidney powell, and jenna ellis, seeing all three here during a november 2020 press conference. All of them face racketeering charges under georgias rico laws. Rico, racketeering, influence, corrupt organization laws, allow a prosecutor to use Little Details to paint a broad picture of a bigger crime that a group of people conspired to do something wrong and all the things they did to get to that goal were part of the conspiracy. Ironically, rudy giuliani, a former federal prosecutor, used rico quite a bit against organized crime when he was a prosecutor. President biden has consistently stayed out of this, which is proper. Keep in mind, in this case, the white house has absolutely no power over anything in this case. This is President Biden off to wisconsin on the campaign trail. The indictment of course comes from Fulton County in atlanta, georgia. Those are charging crimes under Georgia State law, and the feds have absolutely no power over that. Right. So you mentioned howry coe charges can contain small Little Details, pinpoint small details in this indictment. Yeah. And what were seeing im glad you mentioned that, because one of the things were seeing on social media, many of former president Donald Trumps supporters are looking at this indictment and looking at the small details and casting doubt over the entire indictment because there are things in there like making a tweet. Thats not illegal. Its part of a Bigger Picture in the indictment. Its like the prosecutor points out the defendant bought a ski mask and took a picture of a bank. Those arent illegal. It leads the crumbs create a path that leads to a crime is what the prosecutors are saying. So i think youll see a lot of this on social media. All the things people will say, thats not illegal. Yeah. This is so interesting. It is. Go to nbcbayarea. Com. Weve posted the document there. The man accused of killing bob lee was back in court today. Ginger Conejero Saab continues our coverage from the courthouse in San Francisco this morning. Trial itself isnt starting for a while. Reporter thats right, laura. No, it is not. And it wont for some time. Today was strictly procedural here at San Franciscos hall of justice, and cameras were not allowed outside courtroom 22. Outside the courtroom, it was quieter than past hearings when family members and supporters from both sides were represent. This time momenis lawyers arrived with his mother shortly before court opened at 9 00 a. M. Inside, mr. Momeni was present for his rearraignment, which is procedural after a pretrial. The defendant is read the charges against him and has an opportunity once again to enter a plea. One of his lawyers, tony brass, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. Momenis mother, who has been here for most court appearances, if not all of them, was standing in the gallery as this happened. Mr. Momeni then waived his right to a speedy trial, meaning both sides will meet once again on october 2nd for the next procedural hearing. The trial is not expected to start then. Mr. Momeni is accused of killing cash app founder bob lee back in april. Prosecutors say he stabbed lee using a kitchen knife, and video shows the two men together at the Millennium Tower just 30 minutes before lee was killed. Momenis defense team argues he did not have any ill will toward lee and says he acted in selfdefense. So, there was a short discussion about the vehicle that has been seen in surveillance footage. Both sides agree thats whats going on around the country white bmw can be released back to momenis family. There was a short discussion, a little bit of backandforth about the fees that are that will be that will be coordinated with that vehicle, but then again, thats strictly procedural. Well be back in court here for october 2nd for the next steps. Laura . Ginger, thanks for the latest. New at 11 00, charges have been filed after last weeks deadly shooting near an oakland b. A. R. This morning investigators still trying to piece together what happened to a woman whose body was found this weekend in golden gate park. A mother dealing with her daughters death and what may have happened to her. Roya koike received a call from the medical examiner yesterday informing her about her daughter, kelly brock. She died. She says that her daughter, who grew up in the east bay, lost her way with drugs, homelessness, in the city. She was beautiful. Was. I cant believe it. Was. These are pictures and memories and stories of better times she says. Her daughters body was found by a dog walker. She says that the medical examiner told her that there was no blood or immediate indication of what caused her daughters death, just that she was in a duffel bag and had no clothe beg low her waist. I dont think its a hate crime. I do know she would go to extreme for obviously. I think thats most likely what happened. She says that kelly was tormented by schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other form ls of Mental Illness. She says kelly resisted met case and treatment and for the past four years she lived on the streets in San Francisco. Take a look at this. This was from early this morning before the suns arrival. You know what hit . Some lightning strikes. You could see them from the distance there overlooking san jose. Traffic cameras in san jose caught this sight. It happened about 5 30 this morning when we were live on today in the bay. Kari was monitoring that. There were some cloudtoground lightning strikes, and if it hits vegetation, that can cause a fire. So were still monitoring for that potential. It was earlier this morning over the Central Valley, but we could see it from the south bay, and it was traveling up i5 before it did develop some rain. Now that activity is still traveling to the north with a chance of some spotty showers developing as we go through the next few hours. A closer look did show initially lightning strikes, and you see the rain develop as it moved through patterson toward the delta. Things have quieted down. Were seeing a lot of humidity and hot temperatures. Were headed for the 90s and even triple digits for today and the next several days. But with that elevated fire danger due to the lightning strikes, that will continue as we still see this moisture being pumped in from an area of low pressure, drawing in some monsoonal moisture across the region. If we get those storms developing over the sierra, we could see more of that moving in as we go into this afternoon into the evening. So still watching out for those rain chances. Meanwhile, it is just hot out there. Ill have more on how hot those temperatures will get and whats ahead coming up in the full microclimate forecast. Thank you. In maui, crews are out searching that rubble for victims. We know only 3 of the 99 people confirmed dead have been identified so far. Meanwhile, some People Living in lahaina are starting to find relief in openair community centers. A group of residents have set up a onestop relief area for people to get what they need to recover from this disaster. That may include water, food, hygiene, and medical products, as well as Mental Illness assistance. Many lahaina locals are concerned about leaving the west side of maui. They fear that the government restrictions will prevent them from returning. Locals are having such a hard time even getting in. There were roadblocks set up outside of lahaina preventing from coming in and out of lahaina or coming into lahaina, perhaps. So there were muchneeded things we were deprived of so people had to break the rules to get to this point. That fire in lahaina is the deadliest u. S. Wildfire in more than 100 years and has damaged more than 2,200 buildings. The estimated cost in damages, 6 billion. So sad. Every single time i see that. Now, nbc bay areas redd are has more on that meeting happening in just a few hours. The city of san jose believes pg e will be too slow to electrify new developments within the city limits. So this afternoon, the city council will vote on ordinance amending the municipal code to establish san jose power to provide electricity for future housing, industrial areas, and transportation in North San Jose and downtown. The city is concerned that pg e is unreliable, backlogged with too many other projects, and doesnt have the money to electrify future development in a timely manner. The city would build and operate power lines off two new highvoltage transmission lines scheduled to be complete in 2028. You can see the maps on your screen. One line runs from the met area to a substation in the soutrnart of downtown. The other would run through albiso. Ey estimate they can lower the cost of electci for customers by 15 to 25 because the city would be exempt from state and federal taxes, wouldnt have to worry about shareholder returns. Pg e is against this proposal. The utility sent me a copy of a letter it sent yesterday to the city of san jose. The utility questions whether the city would actually be able to provide lower rates given the costs of starting up a new utility. Wonders if the city can recruit qualified workforces to run the new grid. The utility acknowledges it has experienced challenges in delivering new service in part because of the historic winter storms but says by the end of june, all the collections from the rains were complete. The union which represents 27,000 electrical workers is also against this proposal. The union sent a letter to the city expressing concern that a san jose power would displace members working for pg e. Bob redell, nbc bay area news. Thank you, bob. A former Oakland Police chief is suing that city. According to the San Francisco chronicle, Leronne Armstrong said he made whistleblower claims against someone overseeing the police department. He accuses sheng thao and others of retaliaing by firing him. The mayor first put armstrong on administrative leave earlier this year after he was accused of mishandling two officer misconduct cases. The city fired armstrong back in february. No one involved in the investigation responded to the chronicles request for comment. And waves catching the eyes of beachgoers because the waves look a little red. Its called red tide. Its caused by a type of phytoplankton bloom in warm waters. Although it looks interesting, the bloom releases toxins that can harm plants and animals. Experts think these types of blooms will continue to be more common because of warming waters. The toxin levels arent harmful to humans, but experts suggest people should not swim in red tides. Very interesting. Back here at home, were dealing with some warmer temperatures. Yes. It is very warm in the inland valleys. Meanwhile, along the coast and in San Francisco, it still feels pretty nice out there as we take a live look outside. The fog has cleared for most areas except for right over the golden gate bridge. But it is a beautiful day, and weve had these high clouds overhead that make it look so interesting, even throughout the day, but definitely for those sunrises and sunsets as we get those colorful hues. We also continue to see more moisture coming in, and there is the chance that we could see some of that energy in the atmosphere and the warm weather interacting with that humidity spark off some showers and thunderstorms. What we saw earlier this morning was the lingering impacts of some of that moisture moving in from southern california, moving in to the sierra, and making its way across the Central Valley as it kind of fizzled out, moving into the bay area. But theres still that chance we could see more of those thunderstorms for late this evening, in fact, over the next couple of days. Take a look at our current temperatures. It ranges from 65 in San Francisco to 92 in vacaville. So its already heating up in those inland valleys, and it feels really muggy out there. So in dublin right now, were at 84 degrees. Were headed for mid90s here for the middle of the afternoon. You do want to limit your time outside during those hottest hours of the day, and were headed also for the mid90s in parts of the south bay. As we go through the next several days, livermore will go from highs over 100 degrees to some mid90s for thursday, so its still pretty hot. Then going into the weekend, upper 80s and low 90s. So its going to be warm but definitely not the high heat were experiencing now. And were going to have some milder temperatures for the weekend into early next week. But overall, were really closely watching the inland valleys while San Francisco continues with 70s in the forecast, and then well see temperatures in the 60s in time for the weekend. As we turn to our climate in crisis, were getting new details about a 30 billion funding project from the Biden Harris Administration from the inflation reduction abt. It will go towards 15 National Marine sanctuaries including two projects near the bay area for education, research, and Climate Change mitigation. Monterey facilities will be upgraded to withstand the effects of Climate Change, also while creating careers in sustainability. It will be a new building that will be a green building, that will be focused on reducing water use, reducing energy and carbon emissions, so just building that time of facility in itself will help us reduce impacts on Climate Change. Monterey bay National Marine sanctuary will also use some of the funding to continue to restore Ocean Habitats and kelp forests. In San Francisco, fafacilities will getet a facelifift and expansion to their Ocean Climate center as well as preserving the history of the coast guard station. This will provide a space in which we can help understand why the wildlife has stranded, has died, so we can be more responsive to the causes of death.
