It is devastating. At least 55 people have been killed by wildfires and a high number of people still missing. This death toll will likely continue to rise. The states governor saying late last night, quote, when you see the full extent of destruction, it will shock you, adding it appears like a bomb went off. While the fires are mostly contained, the rescue operations are far from over. Experts say theory the rebuilding process could take years. We have complete coverage, including a live interview with the mayor of maui county. Lets start with Miguel Almaguer who got a firsthand look at the devastation there. Reporter good morning. As the death toll continues to rise now at 55, authorities are concerned they will find even more bodies. By one estimate, upwards of a thousand people could still be missing. The crews here on the ground are winning some battles and losing others. On the island streets where residents made harrowing escapes through raging walls of fire. Lets go reporter so many others did not. This wildfire now the second deadliest in modern history. I do not know what the final number is going to be, and its going to be horrible and tragic. It is a community. So the amount of loss is incredible. Reporter in the skeletal and now desolate landscape, without power, internet or even radio coverage, Officials Say they have no way to determine how many are still missing. Authorities say hundreds of homes have been lost. A growing tally thats personal for families like patrick sullivans. How do you describe the emotions that you are feeling right now . Well, right here its pretty tough. But well be okay. Reporter from the air and on the ground, the National Guard is helping crews battle at least three wild fires still burning on maui. The hardest hit areas still impossible to access. Kirkman grieving the loss of his home and his fathers ashes. Found some of these old pictures, and i said, i should take a picture of it because it is all i have now. Reporter even boats in the harbor were consumed by the inferno. Victims say they were running as fast as the flames. Many jumped right into this harbor to save their lives. While the ocean provided an escape route for some. Is anybody still out here . Its time to go its time to go reporter not all who reached the shores survived. Residents say they found bodies floating in the water, caught with almost no warning. Others perished in their homes or were trapped in vehicles. An entire community surrounded by loss, with one sign of historic hope, the towns famous banyan tree is the only landmark left standing. After 80mileperhour winds fan the initial flames, initially the weather conditions have improved as of today, but now theyre focused on the missing. Savannah, back to you. Miguel, thank you. Were joined now by the mayor of maui county. Good morning to you, sir. Aloha, savannah. Aloha, and i know the aloha spirit is alive and well, but what a trauma you have been through. Can you just share with everybody what you have seen, what the situation is right now in maui . Certainly. We have seen devastation, destruction, immeasurable loss, loss of life, loss of historical places, properties, businesses. But im confident as a community and as a coming together we will rebuild. Indeed. Right now, though, you are still looking for the missing. The death toll stands at 55. Is that a number you expect to rise . Yeah. You know, i think that number could go up, according to those that have been doing the recovery. Our police department, the coast guard, the National Guard, the different groups that are helping us here on the island. That is the number of people they found that are outside of the buildings. So we have not yet searched in the interior of the buildings. Were waiting for fema to help with that search, as they are equipped to handle the hazmat conditions of the buildings that have been burned. Sir, can you paint the picture of the difficulty that you and First Responders are facing right now. There is no power. There is no communications. You are on an island, literally. How difficult is the situation right now . Well, that part of the island, what we call the west side in kaanapali, theyre impacted by no power and, therefore, no water. They have no communication. No internet, no cell phone. So thats the challenge. We have been sending people out. We have been sending crews out with supplies and water and tomorrow we will be stepping that up even more. An incredible amount of support has come from our federal partners, our state partners, as well as other counties and businesses. The entire community has come together. And people outside of our community have also reached out to us to offer assistance, donations. So we are going to take full advantage of the help we have been offered. And, again, right now, our focus is on finding any any missing persons. We want to reunite families. We want to give people information, whether their Family Member is at one of our shelters or whether they are among those that have perished. We need to get that information to our to our citizens. Finally, sir, some local residents are saying they never heard of any of those sirens, those warning sirens that would normally sound when a Natural Disaster is looming. Do you know anything about that . Do you think the siren system, the warning system, worked sufficiently . I think this was an impossible situation. The winds that hit us on that side of the island and, in fact, in other parts of the island in some areas got up to 80 miles an hour. Some sustained between 45 and 60, 65. So everything happened so quickly. I cant comment on whether or not the sirens sounded or not, but i know that the fires came up so quickly and they spread so fast. There were some initial initially when there was a smaller fire, homes were evacuated. And, again, many, many people evacuated from their homes. We have 2,100 people in shelters on tuesday night. So many people were sent to shelters. And thats not including the many visitors who sheltered in place at their hotels and hotel rooms in kaanapali was the fire had not gone to that area. But there was no power. Such an unprecedented incident. So many people love maui, have so much affection and care what you are going through. Thank you for your time. Thank you. Thank you. Well hear from more of the survivors and the heroes, some of the doctors there on the front lines coming up. Such a desperate situation there. The economy, for the first time in more than a year, inflation has picked up with Consumer Prices rising by 3. 2 in july. What does it mean for your wallet. Here to explain is brian cheung. 3. 2 . We know the feds target rate is 2 . Ticked over last month as well. What do you see in these numbers . Give us the good news and the bad news . Inflation tells us the rate in change in prices over the last year. And that number is dramatically better this time than it was in the summer of last year. Now, for what its worth, high inflation and positive figure you see on inflation means figures are still rising. Albeit as a slower pace. Food and housing, rent and mortgage payments remaining very expensive for americans. Thats the reason why for the federal reserve, that will l rel continue. Those are various housing and food that everybody feels. So the fed has been on this aggressive path of raising rates to try to bring down inflation obviously its worked. Its dramatically down from a year ago, as you mentioned what do you think the fed does now . Will there be a rate hike . 3 is still above that now, for the federal reserve, the effort has been raising Interest Rates to deliberately slow the economy and bring the rate down. 3 is a good improvement but for the fed, theyre looking at this and saying, its not yet Mission Accomplished so could they again raise Interest Rates when they get to the next meeting, which is in september. Its possible. The markets say maybe for right now, but there is a lot of data between now and then. And it is a lagging indicator, too exactly. Its tricky brian, thank you very much. The Supreme Court has temporary blocked a deal with the maker of oxycontin about objections raised by the Justice Department. Good morning, craig this deal would have limited how responsible the Sackler Family would be for the damage caused by opioids made by Purdue Pharma the government challenged that deal, and now the court will hear the argument out. A massive settlement for Purdue Pharma is on hold this morning after the Supreme Court temporarily blocked the deal that would protect members of the Sackler Family for more on opoidrelated lawsuits Purdue Pharma made oxycontin and a lot of money for the Sackler Family the drug bought in an estimated 35 billion for the company. Using aggressive marketing tactics, millions of americans became addicted to the open i didnt do. Sheryl lost her sons, hori and shawn. I lost my children. I lost two of my children. Thats a life sentence in itself. Reporter such deals led to an avalanche of lawsuits the crisis dramatized on hulus dope sick. Purdue pharma filed for bankruptcy in 2019 under the terms of the bankruptcy settlement, members of the Sackler Family would be shed ffuture lawsuits in exchange for 6 billion that could be used to settle opoidrelated claims but the Justice Department says they should not be able to use Legal Protections designed for debtors. It would leave in place a road map for wealthy corporations and individuals to misuse the bankruptcy system. What is the issue the Supreme Court wants to look at the Supreme Court wants to look at whether people who dont file nor bankruptcy but have some connection to a bankruptcy should get the benefit of a release. The Bankruptcy Court has done that here for the sacklers, and the Supreme Court is deciding whether that violate it is law. Reporter but for many families involved, there is a human toll to further delay. There are hundreds of families who have lost, hundreds and they just want it over Purdue Pharma says it is confident in the legality of the plan, and it is optimistic, it says, that the Supreme Court will uphold the court agreement. The court will hear oral arguments in the case in december, and it is expected to issue a ruling next year. So everything is on hold until then yes and those families are still in phenomenal pain. It will take a lot of work and a lot of years and a lot of manpower, but i have no doubt that it will bounce back. So, dana, first of all, so good to see the helpers have already shown up there. The folks at the shelters, what are they telling you about what they need Going Forward . Reporter craig, the biggest need right now is temporary housing. Many of these families, their homes have burned to the ground. Officials say there is nothing left. So the big challenge is going to be rebuilding and where are you going to put those homes. And if you are concerned about prices and passwords, you might not like it. Not good news good morning, guys looks like password sharing crackdowns are here to stay. Disney plus set to follow in the footsteps of netflix, who saw a boost in subscribers after launching its ban. And other streaming services appear ready to do the same. Want to spend the weekend bing watching your favorite shows if you are sharing a password, disney announcing its exploring ways to monitor password sharing. Just sort of borrow it from those that can afford it. This comes months after netflix successfully pressed pause on sharing accounts. Disney plus and hulu are two of the most popular. A lot of consumers like the content there. Netflix is tripping if they think im about to add a member. And despite some backlash this is horrible. Business is booming. Netflix added nearly six million subscribers after the crackdown. 60 of viewers have at least four streaming services. And an average household pays 54 for subscriptions monthly. Now disney plus and hulu are scheduled to hike up their prices starting october 12th the standalone ad free version of disney plus expected to go up 3 to 13. 99 a month and hulu will increase to 17. 99 a month. With password sharing and price hikes, experts say it is only a matter of time before more streaming services join in. Everyone is doing it. It is hard to ignore it. And eventually people will have to decide whether or not it is worth paying for the streaming service that theyre watching. All right so as we head into this next chapter of streaming wars, how can you make sure you are getting the best bang for your buck well, one of the things you do is download a subscription tracker. A lot of people dont know what it is theyre paying for also try this. Delete some of the apps and see which ones you actually use. And then the other option is to look at these subscriptions that have ads as well and if you are willing to watch a few ads, do that it starts to look like oldie worldy tv. I thinky should do les or somethi you know its called cable. Fair. Thats a good point if you start paying attention to the apps that you dont use, youd save a ton of money. For sure. Stephanie, at least when you give us bad news, you do it with a smile. Thank you, friend. You know whats always free roker. So far. Im going to be my own bundle enjoy. Anyway, that doesnt sound right, does it unfortunately, it is the same old song down for our friends in the south. 68 million people. Now, thats up about 60 million from yesterday because now the heat advisories are stretching up into the midplains today amarillo may set a record, new orleans, tampa, miami, brownsville, all within striking distance of the records. More of the same tomorrow from ashville, north carolina, orlando and miami as well into the northeast into the great lakes. We are looking at more temperate conditions so temperatures feel a lot better from the National Hurricane center, the forecast update, 60 above normal chance of above normal activity expected the may outlook, storms 17 to 18, they upped that in august, thats because of all the abnormally warm waters in the atlantic due to Climate Change 6 to 11 hurricanes possible. Major hurricanes 2 to 5 possible so we will be watching the atlantic very closely in the next several months. Good friday morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. Our temperatures will reach into the mid 80s today, special in the south bay and inland east bay. Were also back with one of the hottest trends in dining right now. Buffets are back. Thats right. They were hit hard by the pandemic now many buffets are trying to bounce back in a big way joe fryer looked into the reasons why. Good morning. Good morning. As we emerge from social distancing and constant hand sanitizing, seemed a little weird to stand in a buffet line, touching the tongs they just touched and then chowing down. But customers were craving value and variety, and they found it in the Mountain Range of food known as the buffet. Buffets are like selfservice gas pumps. But here the fuel is food. I love seafood. And filling up empty plates and stomachs. Im gifted with a bottomless pit. Fect for that. According to an Entry Market Research company, last year so buffets are perfect for that. According to an industry Market Research company, last year buffets were a 5. 5 billion industry, up 9 from the year before why are people returning to buffets . Itmily and itdget. Golden coral boasts all you caat buffets for under 20 a person the chains sales were up 14 last year. At home food prices rose more than 11 in that same period. You have a wonderful selection of items you are based on only one price you know it is going to cost yo serving up to get in and get out. Budgetfriendly buffets are serving up comfort food like mac and cheese and pizza so are highend options like the ones in las vegas, focused on luxury dining. That includes wicked spoon. The buffet business after the pandemic has been amazing for us it is a real Creative Outlet for us as chefs to push the envelope for us. Here it costs 74, and includes crab legs and more. Well, i think there is something really thrilling about seeing piles of food. Lily jane says social media is feeding our appetite for buffets and our desire for experiences. What we saw when restrictions started to be lifted was that people had a lot of pentup energy so they were really looking forward to going out and having fun and exploring. She says the pandemic was toughest on middle of the road buffets like sweet tomatoes, which closed 97 stores higher up the food chain, in queens, new york, at a place literally called the buffet, busi is fantastic. They even hav machine. We are trying to cater to a certain type of palate because the food speaks for itself, the customers keep coming back. Her strategy, go for the seafood first. Unlike me. I feel like i need to get fruit and salad. Fruit salad . What are you doing the options, like the opinions, are endless. So emerging from the pandemic, many buffets took extra precautions, masks, sneeze guards that did help ease fears and keep customers safe. One interesting note from robin. She says that buffets often serve comfort food when times are tough for families, especially with inflation over the last year, we could all use food for the soul. For me with the kids, go ahead. Especially if you are on vacation. If there is a free buffet, have 17 pancakes if you like. Joe, we have to say, congratulations to you im excited, too. Here is a look at whats happening now. Reporter im bob redell in san jose. The red cross of Northern California Coastal Region says 13 of its volunteers are already in hawaii or are en route to help the victims of the wildfires in maui. We know one of those volunteers should be leaving a few hours from now. We know there are search and rescue crews from the bay area headed to maui. We know of one firefighter from Contra Costa County who is expected to go there to not only help try to find some of the missing people, but no reestablish communications. Good to see them lending a hand. Back here at home, meteorologist kari hall is tracking a nice forecast for the weekend. We are going to have it clearing out, but were watching rain just to our south. A few spotty showers moved through the south bay a little while ago. We are seeing the return of moisture from the monsoon affecting parts of our morning. Were going to clear out today. Were headed for the upper 70s and low 80s inland and well continue to see low clouds and fog in San Francisco and highs in the mid60s. As we go through the weekend, its going to be warming up with spots in the trivalley hitting 90 degrees, and it will be even hotter on sunday. Were looking at low to mid90s for the inland valleys. Thank you, kari. We have more local news coming up in just a half hour. Hope your morning is off to a greastart. T it went from, you know, complete paradise to the complete opposite really quick. Weve got Kelsea Ballerini. She is ready to come out on that concert stage and show us how its done. But lets get started on a friday morning with your news at 8 00. Relief efforts ramping up in hawaii with a staggering increase in the death toll overnight. Tom llamas joins us from maui with the latest, including new images of this catastrophe as it unfolded. Tom, good morning. Reporter hey, savannah. Good morning to you. Just behind me, those Police Cruisers you see in the distance, thats a check point. They are only allowed utility crews and emergency vehicles in. Youre right. We do have new video of the chaotic moments when that wild fire took so many by surprise. This windy weather you are seeing this morning, along with this bone dry brush is another reason why that inferno ignited. This morning some of mauis breathtaking views now a hellscape of ash and debris. The devastating wild fire taking everything from the mountains to the sea. This new video showing the moments the inferno took over days ago. Residents racing to escape. Oh, my god reporter so many losing their homes and their lives. Im sitting up there watching lahaina burn, building after building after building after building, tree, school, church, gas stations exploding, boats exploding, propane tanks exploding. Reporter the once thriving and Historic Community of lahaina. She showed me videos of her neighborhood, gone. At night, shes haunted by the images of her neighbors running for their lives. People are running passed me with dogs and babies and bags, just crying, crying, skateboarding down the street, running, just charging. Reporter the destruction and rising death toll have so many in a state of shock and sadness. Amid the heart break, there are the helpers. The u. S. Coast guard launching these response boats. The War Memorial Gymnasium in maui a place of refuse. Oprah winfrey also there, seen chatting with volunteers and residents. Its a little overwhelming. I came through here just to see what people needed. And then went shopping. Reporter and at the maui airport, tourists are still living, eating and sleeping anywhere they can. These two couples from arkansas and maryland will spend 36 hours camped out at baggage claim. The wives sleeping in golf travel bags. Is it comfortable . Better than the floor. Reporter but they realize they are the lucky ones. It is very sad. We saw these people. They worked at the hotel we were at, and they all had stories. They were all wonderful people. Reporter and its still unclear what exactly caused this wild fire that has killed more than 50 people here in hawaii. When you speak to residents of lahaina, they will tell you that believe that death toll will be much higher. When you see all these images, everybody we have seen so far, it is incredible anyone survived. It is astonishing to see what was there a few days ago is now just totally lost. Tom, thank you very much. I want to turn to the man that runs the mobile care center. He raced into action this week to street survivors of those wild fires. You are a doctor that makes house calls. Thats how Everybody Knows you there. Tell me what you saw, what you encountered . Which there are you talking about . The first day when you first came upon it. Yeah. So the first day and, first of all, thank you for having me and covered the story here. This is like pretty intense moments for us, everyone in maui, and probably one of the biggest disasters to hit the whole islands of hawaii and the state. But the night before is when we started getting warnings that we had high wind advisories. And we got a lot of warnings in maui all the time, high surf advisory, flash flood warnings. Weve even had warnings from north korea sending a bomb here potentially. So we had this warning that there might be some fires. Were used to those. We see brush fires all the time. Most people i heard were starting to evacuate, which was kind of rare. I have never seen that happen. But i think overnight, we just didnt hear anything from lahaina. In the morning when i woke up, i had no idea what was happening behind that. I thought behind my heart and gut to go out there and take a look. I know the roads were closed. I asked for some advice, and the Mayors Office allowed us to go through with my mobile unit that i started a nonprofit called for the people. And i started getting Text Messages from the ems, paramedics and firefighters that there is bodies on the grounds, like lots. That was disturbing and surreal. They were like, doc, there is bodies in the er. They were like, no, were stable. They evacuated a few people. But within an hour and a half, two hours, i got my nurses and team and somewhat closed my clinic but made it just open to anybody that needed it and made it free for the whole week for anybody that needed anything. When we went out there, i had no idea what i was dealing with. When we first got there and got through, it was devastating. It felt like a war zone. It was still fresh. I could see trees burning. I could feel the smoke. I could feel the heat. And it was basically like another pandemic. To explain it, it was a ghost town. Very apocalyptic. As our mobile unit was driving through, we started seeing some people come out of the wood work, like survivors. They came up to us, and i was like, can i help you. Some needed medical attention and some were just like, i need water. I need food. They hadnt eaten for like a day. So that was providing some basic humanitarian stuff and providing food. And some people were in need of medical care, but it was shocking. Itnt sin until the next and then i went bout like what we were dealing hereisland. Well, i mean, dr, what the peoplere have been ugh is extraordi. What kind of care are you able to provide now . I know that the resources are so scarce. Yeah. So, i mean, initially our ems team and paramedic and fire department, everyone has just done an extensive job to evacuate the people and help the injured. As an er doctor, i was mentally ready for battle. I had stuff for wound care, burn care, iv fluids. But when i got there, i realized it was a lot of people that needed basic stuff. It was the people with chronic diseases that were going to become acute medical issues, people with seizure meds, hypertension. People just didnt have their medication. I just thought i would go there and be a good doctor and order their meds. I had no idea the pharmacies were gone. The other pharmacy that survived was closed. There was no electricity. I had no cell phone signal. I dont know. It was just kind of like a movie and it wasnt real and the patients i was dealing with just to make rapport and ask them, how are you doing, have some bedside manner, ask them how was it, what happened and the stories they had kind of really hit hem. I have seen a lot of trauma as an er doc. I trained at ucla in a big trauma center. But to be here and be home and hear peoples stories, it was devastating. And one or two i said can i share your story with people, and it kind of caught medias attention was just people telling me how they escaped. It reminded me of 9 11 where people were flying out of windows. They said the fire spread 30 seconds block to block to block. It is really tight. It is the smallest old, cutest community ever. And it was the capital of hawaii before it moved to honolulu. But that whole front street and that whole area just burnt down. And people ran to the water. They were jumping into the ocean. They were paddling out to sea. This one girl said she held on to like some metal rod or something in the middle, like maybe like 30 yards out for like seven hours until she was able to come back in. And her friend was hanging on with her and her friend didnt survive. Kind of like a titanic story of losing your friend next to you. Pets, animals, everything. It is heartbreaking. Very heartbreaking. You are doing incredible work out there by being a good doctor, but also being somebody sharing these stories and making sure they get heard so help can be on the way. I know it is the middle of the night there. Thank you for your efforts and time. It is very much appreciated. Thank you for having me. Of course. Our thoughts and our prayers with the folks helping there and all the folks who survived. But just hearing him describe the scene and what people have told him, it is hard for our folks to get their head around whats happening right now. He just painted a picture. Yes, he did. We need to wrap our arms around this community. It is devastated. So many people know it. Maui, if you have been to hawaii, lahaina, people have such affection and love for this community. This community has given so much love to all of us. And it is time for us to give to them. We are going to, at some point here in the near future, let you know how you can help those folks there in hawaii. When we come back, we will take a bit of a turn. Season 2 of welcome to wrexham. And then we have an inspiring story. A young girl and a doctor bonded forever by her lifesaving surgery when she was a little one. 16 years later, they are working side by side. [voice v vibrating]] coming up on 8 17 with an amazing fullcircle moment for a patient and the doctor who helped save her life as a baby. 16 years later, that patient now works with that same doctor who treated her lifethreatening heart condition. She is even considering a career in pediatric cardiology. Shes well on her way. But, first, their story. 17yearold ariana azeez was born with a hole in her heart. The condition called asd is usually not discovered until much later in life but only a few months after she was born, her heart was struggling at 11 months old, she needed surgery to keep her alive. Now more than a decade later, the Rising High School senior is now working alongside him. I think the relationship you have with your pediatric cardiologist is a pretty intense relationship. That intense bond inspired ariana to also consider a career in cardiology, all thanks to dr. Fethke. Hes my favorite. Its been really great to see not only from a Patient Perspective but as like learning under him. Good morning to both of you. Good morning. Thank you. I dont know where to start here but, dr. Fethke, real quickly, what is is it like when you have a little girl that you cared for since she was a baby, as we just saw in those pictures, now wanting to follow in your footsteps. It is incredibly uplifting. You do all these things in your career, but there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the future talk about where we are today and where we may be tomorrow and the best way is to go back and see where weve been now to see this legacy is very uplifting. What was it about your experience that inspired you to want to work alongside the doctor who helped save your life well, i just found it interest that visiting the doctor for checkups and everything throughout the years, i really like the way he interacts with patients, and i got to experience that not only from a Patient Experience but now through my internship with him. So overall, the love jgrew. Oh. So youre planning to go into a career in medicine, right . Yes. What do you want to do . Pediatric cardiology right now. That would be so remarkable because you know what its like to be a patient and then to become a doctor. Yeah. What do you do in the office . What are you learning from the doctor so i get to see different patients with him. I shadow him i have gotten to see the different tests like echocardiograms, ekgs. So i have seen those i have also gotten to actually listen to patients hearts as well, so i do some examining and i hear about the history of the patient and i watch how he explains what the condition is and explains like how to, like, treat it. Yeah. And go about treatment from there on so its a really great experience. Dr. Fethke, i mean, it sounds like shes learning a whole heck of a lot from you. And youre beaming with pride. Absolutely.
